Welcome to the future High Performance Cartridges non lead-accurate-reliable IMPALA - HIGH PERFORMANCE CARTRIDGES IMPALA - more than one step ahead! Welcome to the future! Imagine a cartridge with which you can . . . Kill a trophy moose, bag a blue grouse for taxidermy, shoot a rabbit for table fare or that once in a lifetime monster hog, stop a charging buffalo at 15 paces and cleanly take an antelope at 300. With one and the same calibre! With one and the same bullet! Dream? Reality! IMPALA - the different way to hunt. IMPALA‘s IMPRESSIVE features Extremely flat trajectory Match- grade accuracy High penetration Shockwave inducing Minimum meat damage Zero lead contamination We developed the 21st century ammunition. YOU made the right decision by choosing IMPALA! Helmut Eller General Manager / Impala Europa HISTORY A short review on the development of hunting bullets over the last 100 years. Up to the late 19th century shooting was easy and simple. Black powder was the propellant and lead the bullet material. With the development of smokeless powders lead suddenly turned out being too soft. Hence a bullet jacket was introduced, firstly made of soft steel with copper and tombac to follow later. The full metal jacket bullet as a solution survived well into our time and due to the comparatively little wounding capability these bullets are even declared mandatory for military use by the Hague Convention. The search for better performance on game lead to a temporary solution, the soft point bullet. This bullet is, however, handicapped by its design inprinciple: To achieve proper and acceptable killing performance it has to shed its kinetic energy by either loosing mass (fragmentation) or enlarging its diameter (mushrooming). To do so, however, it has to rely on external assistance such as that impact velocity and target resistance have to be within certain limits. Going below these limits results in a FMJ effect and marginal wounding effect while on the other end of the scale excessive meat damage and insufficient penetration are imminent. Lately all bullet manufacturers are trying to adress the problem with a countless number of, sometimes quite complicated designs, or they just give their 100 year old soft points a fancy name. Improvements in general have been achieved but the lacking flexibility of these „special bullets” remains the same, let alone the aspects of meat hygiene and lead contamination. For over 20 years now we have lead free bullets on the market. They solved the problem of lead contamination but, having the wounding methodology of soft points, they have their disadvantages as well. 1909: 2009: slow inefficient lead pollution fast flexible non lead IMPALA - times have changed . . . our demands too! The hunting bullet of the 21st century! Mass- and shape consistent universal bullet. Kobus Du Plessis, genius South African ballistician, consequently took advantage of the ballistic and forensic experience he had collected over decades. In 2002 he surprised hunters and experts as well with his „shock wave inducing” Impala Solid. Tissue displacement-not tissue destruction is the principle! His approach was high frequency displacement rather than work done (J/s). This resulted in a bullet which’s sharp cutting edge and nose design develops strong radial shock waves in the animals organs. As no deformation is necessary the Impala bullets do not rely on a fine balance between impact velocity, bullet diameter, bullet mass and target resistance (skin, meat and bone). The bullets performance is machined into its profile using a CNC lathe other than conventional bullets that is dependant of the anatomical structure at point of entering the animal. The Impala Bullet is the only purposely manufactured shockwave inducing hunting bullet in the world. 1 Concept-3 Bullets / Common Features Monolithic bullets (solids), CNC turned from a special brass alloy and well balanced. 2-4 grooves to reduce barrel friction. That result in less pressure and less barrel fouling. Cutting edge for maximum shock effect. Equally suited for small and large game. High penetration, good stopping power and little meat damage. No lead contamination of game meat and environment. 1. Impala LWHV (LS): The Light Weight High Velocity is the All-around Bullet. Its incomparable flexibility permits its use at any distance, from fox and roe deer up to big dangerous game, including even buffalo and elephant. 2. Impala RNFP (RN): This construction combines maximum penetration with maximum stability (against obstacles in the line of flight as well as in the body). with excellent shockwave inducing capability. The bullet is heavier than the LS and trajectory not as flat. Target: all hunting situations where extremely long shots are not likely to be taken. In adequate calibres it is the optimum bullet for big and dangerous game. Driven hunts and tracking wounded game and hunting in thick cover are other tasks where the RN bullet shines. 3. Impala LWFP (KS): The lightweight, conical flat nose bullets designed for lever action rifles with tubular magazines, handguns and low recoil applications are extremely accurate and capable of very high velocity. This results in high energy, penetration and stopping power. These attributes make the KS bullet ideally suited for handgun hunting, self defence and law enforcement. KS bullets are also used in rifle calibres, the Impala DJ (battue) cartridges as well as in guns such as the .30-30 Win., .444 Marlin and .45-70 Govmt. LS RN KS WHY LEAD FREE? IMPALA - Others displace the problem . . . we have solved it! Calibre C lib .270 270 WSM - 6,5g 6 5 Impala I l LS Bag your game, don‘t destroy it! During the last two decades several lead free bullet constructions hit the market. They all have proofed that 1. their performance is equal or better than that of conventional lead core bullets, 2. their accuracy is equal or better than that of conventional lead core bullets, 3. they do not cause excessive barrel fouling or barrel wear. Beside these facts there are 2 important reasons for lead free bullets. 1. Environmental Protection After lead has been eliminated from water pipes, gasoline and numerous industrial processes, hunting remains as one of the major causes for lead pollution. Well, most of it is the result of lead shot but imagine that a yearly number of approx. 1,5 million heads of big game taken in Germany correspond to some 30 tons of lead brought out by rifle ammunition. The situation is especially critical where birds of prey regularly feed on cadavers of or guts from game animals contaminated with lead fragments from hunting ammunition. Research results of both the Leibnitz-Institute for Zoo-and Game Animal Research in Berlin (IZW) and the Research Centre for Environmental Policy (FFU) at the Free University of Berlin (www.seeadlerforschung.de) are showing that lead intoxication is the major cause of death to the sea eagles. For the same reason several counties in California have already put a total ban on lead core hunting ammunition to protect the condors. 2. Consumer Protection As far back as 1984 Dr. Hermann Hecht of the Federal Institute for Meat Research (BAF) in Kulmbach, Germany investigated the lead contamination of game animals. It turned out that lead fragments can be found as far as 30 cm (14”) from the wound channel (see x-rays from IZW). Further the study points out how lead, originally harmless to man because of its minimal absorption, is transformed into soluble and potentially hazardous derivates during the maturing process of the meat. As critical limits were exceeded regularly Hecht recommended the ammunition manufacturers to develop lead free alternatives. Expertly hunting demands for bringing game meat, a premium aliment, on the market in perfect quality. In the 21st Century there is no room for game meat that is contaminated with lead and shot to pieces ! Eckhard Posch, professional hunter of Reutte/Tyrol: My PH colleagues and I shoot some 130 heads of big game per year. Eighty percent is Red Deer, the rest Roe Deer and Chamois. I am using the LS bullet in my .243 Win. and 8X68 rifle for all species. No matter if shot at under 100 or over 250 m: The bullet always exits and the animals rarely make it more than 50 m away. The flat trajectory gives me a point blank range of almost 300 m. Three out of four animals die on the spot. My butcher is equally enthusiastic about the bullet. Haematoma, caused by excessive bleeding, are almost never found. I highly recommend Impala Ammunition to all my hunting clients. The German Hunting Magazine’s test compared .308 Win. Ammunition. Accuracy: „With tight groups of 21 and 25 mm the winner of the test was Impala“. Trajectory: „The trajectory is very flat. With a calculated GEE of 177 m is leading the test field in terms of exterior ballistics”. Meat damage: „The exit wounds were double calibre size, the destruction minimal. In spite of the high impact velocity there were almost no haematomas”. Conclusion: „The form stable principle surprised. On European game the .308 had a real knock out performance”. All groups shot 25 meters . Strong performance: The heavy hollow bone, cast in gelatine , did not the least impress the .45 calibre Impala bullet. Demands for Handgun Hunting Ammunition: Most hunting situations are asking for a bullet which is capable of penetrating into the vitals from any angle and has a good wounding capability. Only a form and mass stable bullet like the Impala conical flat nose meets these requirements properly. I have not only developed the factory loads but also tested them on hunts in Africa and North America. As a dog handler I always carry a handgun only and have to dispatch several wounded animals, mostly wild boar, every hunting season. Like many of my fellow dog handlers the performance of the truncated cone Impala bullet has convinced me. Even with the 9 mm Luger I was able to stop a charging 220 lbs wild boar and the .357 and .44 Magnum give me complete penetration on animals of this size. Why no Deforming Bullets? Deforming handgun bullets were developed for law enforcement and most of them are of hollow point design. They are supposed to quickly shed their energy and not to exit. The aggressor has to be stopped while bystanders should not be endangered. As a hunting bullet they are useful only in some special situations, e.g. when, after a road accident, a wounded animal laying on hard ground has to be dispatched. Having much less kinetic energy than rifle bullets the penetration of these bullets, even in large handgun calibres, is insufficient. , Impala, shot at 37 m with .357 Magnum calibre. Driven hunts are a very efficient way to hunt high populations of Hoofed Game. The success as well as the safety of these hunts rely on a high grade of organisation and discipline. Still, an element of risk remains. We have minimized it. Causes of Risk: Bullet fragments • Ricochets • Shots without backstop. Demands for a safe battue bullet: 1. It must not fragment. Bullet splinters are uncontrollable and cause high risk, especially close up (finishing shots). 2. It has to have a high rate of stability. This fast rotation makes the bullet less sensitive against obstacles in the line of flight and reduces the risk of ricochets . 3. It has to loose its kinetic energy fast to minimize the risk for what is beyond the animal. Since 2006 we have a special .308 Win. Impala battue round sporting the 5,8g (90 gr) conical flat nose bullet in our line. It perfectly meets all 3 safety criteria. High muzzle velocity of 1070 m/sec (3500 fps) = less lead on running shots = more hits. Recoil is reduced and the killing performance is outstanding. Even on large Red Deer or Wild Boar the bullet has enough power for complete penetration, also at ranges exceeding 150 m. Hunters like it on the small Roe Deer, too. The Impala KS Safety Bullet: No bullet fragments, like all Impala Solids. Highest Stability. (Rotation speed 5,8g Impala KS = 3500 rpm vs. 11,7g Soft Point = 2500 rpm), combined with the short bullet axis minimizes the risk of ricochets. Fast loss of energy. As the comparison with a conventional 11,7g (180 gr) hunting bullet shows, beyond the recommended distance of 200 meters the Impala KS looses velocity and energy very fast. Should, due to human error, a bullet fly over the horizon, the result is much less dramatic than with conventional ammunition. At 500 m the 5,8g KS goes subsonic already and a remaining energy of 258 Joule (equivalent to a .38 Spl. WC) compares to 1072 Joule for the 180-grainer, Finally, at 1000 m, the energy has dropped to 95 Joule (equivalent .22 short 18 80 gr gr Soft Sofft Point Po oin i t (458 (4 458 8 J). New wind for old cartridges! With Impala Solids: racy and deadly. Back in 2006 Impala Europe has resurrected the venerable „foresters cartridge” 9,3 X 72 R by introducing a fast big game load. The round has proven to be effective on all kinds of European game and enjoys a growing popularity among hunters. We developed our loads further and now there are 3 more historical Impala loads to choose from. All 4 calibres are made by hand according to the highest quality standards. The powder charges are metered by hand to achieve maximum consistancy. Only new, boxer primed cases are used. These are the Impala Loadings advantages: Power for Big Game! All 4 loads develop more than 2000 Joule of kinetic energy at 100 m and therefore are e.g. legal in Germany for all species of Hoofed Game. Accurate! Thanks to the modern bullet, as a general rule accuracy is better than with original soft point ammunition, even from old, worn out barrels. Flat trajectory! Ballistics of these cartridges outshine some „modern” calibers of other makers. Gentle on the barrel! The low-friction brass solid can even be used in old barrels with deep lead-bullet twist. Pressure does not exceed the low limits for these calibers. Because of their age some of the weapon are no longer in shootable condition. Therefore we recommend to have your firearm checked by a competent gunsmith before shooting our ammunition. An accordant warning label is found on every cartridge box.
