On January 19, 2016, the board of directors of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce commissioned the study through Western Washington University Center for Economic and Business Research to determine the local economic impact of refinery employment on Fidalgo Island. It is the Board’s desire to ensure that any decisions made, and opinions formed, related to our refinery partners’ business needs and role in the community are made with the knowledge of their full economic significance. This is the first in a series of reviews of economic impacts the chamber intends to commission in a variety of sectors. Findings of the study released on April 19 showed that of the 841 Shell and Tesoro refinery workers reported in 2014, 217 are estimated to live in the 98221 zip code area. It further reports that for every refining job, another job is created on Fidalgo Island (a multiplier of 2). This means that roughly 424 jobs on Fidalgo Island depend directly or indirectly on the refineries, a figure the study describes as “a significantly higher employment multiplier effect than other industries.” For comparison purposes, it should be noted that localized multipliers are generally below 1.2 for most sectors. This holds true for Fidalgo Island, with some other higher-multiplier industries coming in at 1.4, 1.35 and 1.25 (such as boat building and medical services). . This means that those industries create .25 to .4 jobs for every one job, or stated differently it takes five jobs in a sector with a multiplier of 1.2 to create one additional localized job, like the refineries do with their multiplier of 2.0. The 424 jobs represent 7% of all employment on Fidalgo Island, which is a substantial portion of jobs to be tied to a single industry. The refineries reported that at any time there can be another 370 contract employees, some of whom would be living on Fidalgo. Additionally, this report did not reference the unique economic impact to Anacortes when the refineries conduct their major turnaround work every few years. These events bring through thousands of short-term workers to our community, spending significant money on area businesses and providing a temporary boost to local tax revenue. The study further points out that 98% of workers in Skagit County have a lower average wage than those found at the two refineries with only .25% of workers in the county having a higher wage. The local personal expenditures of the refinery workers living in Anacortes are estimated to be in excess of $4.5 million dollars annually. The full report can be found online at http://anacortes.org/work/doing-business-inanacortes/ member profile Leslie Elvebak Powell Leslie is so excited to be a part of the Anacortes Chamber, and one of their newest Ambassadors. She is currently the Community Relations Director for Lighthouse Memory Care. Born to local families (Campbell Lake and Burlington) Leslie will tell you that she took the long way home. After Graduating from Washington State University (Go Cougs!) she set out to sea first with Norwegian Cruise Lines and then with the Navy working for the DOD as a civilian on board USS Ronald Reagan, CVN 76 as the “Fun Boss.” She’s lived in Colorado, California, Alaska, Saskatchewan, and stopped in more places than she is able to recall. She’ll tell you that on her travels, she met many folks who asked her where her favorite place to visit, and her answer was always home, Deception Pass and Campbell Lake were at the top of the list. Among her favorite things to do: fishing, hunting, crabbing, boating, and of course travelling. Taking a final detour before moving back to Anacortes, Leslie spent 4 years on Samish Island. She raised clams and oysters, became obsessed with nurturing, raising, harvesting and processing 60 percent of the food they ate. Smoking, pickling, canning, freezing, and finally sharing the delicious treats with family and friends. Her move to Anacortes at the beginning of this year has been a joyous one, and she looks forward to re-growing her roots here in Anacortes and Leslie says she already feels like part of the family. Marine Supply & Hardware Co. The Marine Supply & Hardware Company was opened in 1913 by Mike Demopoulos and is currently owned and operated by his grandson Steve Demopoulos. Located at the north end of Commercial Ave. in Anacortes, Marine Supply is the oldest continually operating marine store on the West Coast. The oiled wood floors, antique wood counters and overall feel make this a great place to browse and maybe find a treasure or two. Folks say it’s like being in a museum where all the exhibits are for sale. The friendly, knowledgeable staff are always ready to serve your needs or offer advice, even if it’s just where to have lunch. The surplus tool rooms hold a variety of World War II to present new and used wrenches, blocks and nuts and bolts, along with lots of great junk. Specialty tools, marine paints, books, charts, camping gear, and teak furniture fill the rest of the 5000 square foot main store. The basement and outbuildings are still filled with surplus to refill the store when needed Serving the commercial fishing, industry, and pleasure boaters, Marine Supply strives to be everything to everyone. Stop by for a sample of their Mariners roast coffee, or take home a pound custom roasted for you in house. As the locals say, “If they don’t have it, you don’t need it." Don’t forget to say hi and give a pet to their Maine Coon cat named Fauna. Open 8:30 to 5:00 Monday thru Saturday, you can’t miss this gem of the Pacific Northwest. 3 YOUR TIME IS VALUABLE.
