Some classes require a minimum number of participants registered to be held. These
such classes are canceled if the “minimums” are not met. Therefore if you sign-up for a
class please plan on participating. If you need to cancel your registration please notify
the parks and recreation staff as soon as possible before the first day of the class.
The Parks and Recreation Department will start taking online registrations for
most programs on Monday, September 8.
Please Note:
APRD does not have medical insurance coverage for program participants and is not
responsible for injuries that may occur as a result of participation in City sponsored
recreational activities.
Please be aware that in order to register for classes payment will be required “up front.” REGISTRATION WILL ALSO TAKE
PLACE BY GOING TO THE PARKS AND RECREATION PAGE AT WWW.CITYOFANACORTES.ORG. Participants
may still register over the phone. This can be done by giving a debit/credit card number. Or if participants would rather register
in person that can be done at the parks and recreation office (City Hall, 6th and Q) where cash, check, and debit/credit cards
will be accepted.
The City of Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department does not discriminate against
any person on the basis of gender in the operation, conduct, or administration of
community athletic programs or sports facilities. Any citizen who feels she or he has
been the victim of discriminatory treatment in violation of this policy should report
this concern to the Parks and Recreation Director, Gary Robinson, at 293-1918.

Basketball season is just around the corner. We
are now taking registrations for our recreational
girls basketball league. This noncompetitive and
instructional league is offered to girls who are in
grades 1st - 6th and who want to learn new and
improve existing skills. Good sportsmanship and
equal participation are emphasized in this program.
To maximize fun and skill development, rules
will be modified for 1st - 4th grade divisions.
Practices are typically held during the weekdays
and most games will be played on Saturdays
starting in November. Practices and games for the
5th/6th grade teams may be established based on
how many girls sign up in this age group. They
may play in the SWISH League if there is only
enough girls for one team. Teams are formed by
the Parks and Recreation staff. Volunteer coaches
are needed. Registrations are currently being
accepted on the Parks and Recreation page: www.
cityofanacortes.org. A team shirt is included

STOP FEEDING THE ‘WILD’
ANIMALS OF WASHINGTON
PARK
At a recent meeting of the Anacortes
Parks Commission, it was unanimously
reinforced to support and implement
the ‘No Feeding Animals’ policy at
Washington Park. As much fun as it is
to get up close and personal to deer,
squirrel, rabbits and others, it leads to
heartbreak and nuisance at the end of
the day. A compromised creature of the
wild does not understand why some will
feed it and others won’t. Its expectations
grow, along with its demands. Please do
your part to keep the Park safe and the
critters wild. Admire with cameras, oohs
and aahs, but not with handouts.

Arts on the Ave – a public art program of the Anacortes
Arts Commission – is winding down. Two sculptures in the last
installation of art works along Commercial Avenue were sold and
will remain on public view in Anacortes – “East Meets Northwest”
by Stephen Rock and “How Much Longer” by Peregrine O’Gormley.
The AAC thanks all the participating artists for engaging public
interest in sculptural art during the program that placed loaned
works in locations from The Store to the Majestic Hotel. Further
information about any of the artists who participated in the
program is available from the Anacortes Parks and Recreation
office. Those artists include: James Lapp, Roger Squirrell, John
Zylstra, Dan Freeman, Ken Turner, Leo Osborne, Stephen Rock,
Chuck Fitzgerald, Mark Twain Stevenson, Lin Rebolini McJunkin,
Francisco Salgado, Thor Myhre, Terri Malec,, Peregrine O’Gormley
and the late Arnie Garborg.
New ways to continue including sculpture in public locations are
currently being considered by the AAC.
Art at the Depot -- this successful program continues into the
fall of 2014 to provide local artists a venue for their work and
an opportunity to connect with the community. The exhibits are
scheduled to coincide with monthly, downtown Art Walks on the
first Friday evening of every month, plus 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the
first Saturday. Additional display space for local artists is provided
by Starbucks on Commerical Avenue. Karla Locke, Anacortes
Arts Commission member, coordinates the monthly shows for the
AAC.
September 5-6: “One of a Kind” photography show featuring
the works of Skagit Valley Camera Club. This exhibit will take
you beyond the usual landscapes, wildlife and cityscapes of the
Skagit Valley when camera club members are asked to show viewers
something unique, something only the photographers have the
opportunity to see. Come see what unusual moments, people and
places are captured for the show. (For more information about the
camera club that meets the 2nd Thursday evening of every month,
go to skagitvalleycameraclub.org.)
October 3-4: “Pretty in Pink” is planned for Cancer Awareness
Month. The Fidalgo Island Quilt Guild DIVAS and Ryan Chanel
Hair Salon will join other local artists in presenting fiber art,
clothing, scarves and jewelry – all made by local and area artists –
to be modeled by the DIVAS during the exhibit.
November 7-8: “Views from Fidalgo” will be presented by
the Salish Sea Plein Air painters. This group of local and area
artists has been out and about artistically documenting the views
from our island – in all directions. Come see if they found your
favorite spot for viewing the Salish Sea all around us.
Community will celebrate new public art in the
Commercial Avenue roundabout – At press time for the fall
edition of the MENU, it was impossible to know the completion
date for “Aerie” – the sculpture by Merrilee Moore. Planning the
logistics for the crew that will install the 18-foot work of art are
underway and a ceremony and celebration to mark the event will
be planned and publicized. Watch for details in local media and
the Art in Anacortes page on Facebook.

New Murals for Tommy Thompson Trail – The Anacortes
Parks and Recreation Department teamed up with the Anacortes
Arts Festival again in 2014 to stage the Art Dash along the Tommy
Thompson Trail. The run funds creation of a mural produced during
the festival by a local or area artist; this year’s artwork by Kathleen
Faulkner will be added to the mural gallery along the trail. The
2013 mural by Gustavo Vargas and the 2012 mural by Jack Gunter
will also be put into place this fall.
Art and Designs of SLOW LORIS -- The t-shirt shop in the
Port of Anacortes’ “Little Chicago” at 11th Street and Q Avenue has
an unusual name to go with the unique designs created by Jessica
Lynch and printed on all the tees sold there. Jessica has a personal
fascination with the small, lemur-like mammal called a slow loris that
is native to Thailand and Southeast Asia. An endangered specie, the
slow loris benefits from conservation groups who fund preservation
– so, Jessica donates some of her profits to those organizations.
Jessica and her business partner Arlo Rumpff base their business
on Guemes Island, but the Shirt Shack is a handy outlet for tourists
and the local trade, open Thursdays through Sundays 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. A graduate of the California College of Arts and Crafts in
Oakland, Jessica does freelance, custom illustrations and never uses
computers for her designs – many with nautical or environmental
themes. Her tees appeal to all age groups and are worn by several
touring bands, including local band The Lonely Planet.. And yes,
some of her tees do feature the slow loris.
Ethnic music and Christmas music will be featured
during the final two concerts of 2014 sponsored by the Anacortes
Arts Foundation. Mark your calendars for these two diverse,
musical events:
Sunday, September 14 at 3 p.m. at the Croatian Music Center,
805 Fifth Street -- A lively concert of classical music inspired
by ethic folk music will feature the works of Mozart, Scarlatti,
Beethoven and Haydn. A pre-concert lecture will be given by
George Bozarth from the University of Washington to introduce
the music written for violin and fortepiano. Musical artists Tamara
Friedman on the fortepiano and Cecilia Archuleta on classical
violin will delight the audience with keyboard caprices, toe-tapping
contredanses and gypsy improvisations. General admission is $20
at the door, children under 12 accompanied by an adult are free.
Sunday, December 14 at 3 p.m. at
the United Methodist Church, 2201
H Avenue -- Families are welcome
to enjoy an elegant afternoon of
Christmas music played on solo
handbells by Nancy Kirkner and
piano by Janet Anderson of Seattle.
The concert will include beloved
carols as well as lesser known works
by John Ireland, Percy Grainger
and Ralph Vaughan Williams along
with classical pieces based on folk
tunes and plainsong. The concert is
appropriate for school-age children
and older.
