GARDEN INSPIRATION | 3 Welcome Outdoor inspiration is only pages away Publisher Lee Ann Knudsen, CLP [email protected] Editorial Director Sarah Willis Garden Inspiration, brought to you by the horticultural experts at Landscape Ontario Horticultural Trades Association, is designed as a tool to help you make more of your outdoor living space. Members of LOHTA operate in a wide range of horticultural specialties, and are united and serious about their commitment to spread the joys and benefits of horticulture. No matter your level of gardening expertise, the new plant listings in this issue offer valuable and exclusive information. If you are an experienced gardener, you may be pleased and surprised that breeders have overcome a weakness of your favourite perennial. If you are newer to gardening, this magazine opens up a whole world of plants and possibilities. If something catches your eye, finding that specific new cultivar at your garden centre can be less important than planting a tried and true plant in the same family. This information was compiled by horticulturist Sarah Willis, who studied at the University of Guelph and the Niagara Parks | GARDEN INSPIRATION Commission School of Horticulture, with assistance from horticultural consultant Trevor Cole, author of The Ontario Gardener. The focus is narrow when looking at plant cultivars. Step back, and your perspective changes to a garden bed, a patio or an entire property. The dream landscapes pictured in this issue are professional work from LOHTA members, and can inspire you on many levels. All the landscapes pictured won Landscape Ontario Awards of Excellence for 2006, juried by teams of horticultural experts. The judges define a specific standard of excellence, and do not grant awards in specific categories if their standard is not met. Whether they inspire you to emulate a detail on your own property, embark on a large do-ityourself project or engage a member of the trade to design or construct your own landscape, the Awards’ objective has been met. Enjoy using this information to improve the environment around your home in 2007. Begonia semperflorens F1 hybrid ‘Nightlife’ series ‘Nightlife’ series fibrous begonias Early flowering and floriferous, the bronzeleaved ‘Nightlife’ series offers gardeners a dazzling colour assortment. Dark bronze foliage and large vibrant flowers create a pulsating colour mix in the pack and the garden. Available in ‘Nightlife Deep Rose’, ‘Nightlife Red’, ‘Nightlife Rose’, ‘Nightlife White’. annuals 36 | GARDEN INSPIRATION annuals Begonia ‘Cathedral’ (sometimes called ‘Cathedral Windows’) ‘Cathedral’ begonia Ruffled foliage with windows of red and green are featured on this unusual, but tough, plant for the garden or mixed summer containers. The undersides of these fascinating leaves have erupted veins, allowing cathedral windows of light to shine through. Ivory-pink flowers adorn 30 cm (12 in.) spikes. Begonia tuberhybrida F1 hybrid Mocca series Nonstop® Cabaret™ ‘Hot Pink’ calibrachoa Cabaret™ ‘Hot Pink’ is very free-flowering, displaying large blooms in a nonfading, hot strawberrypink colour. ‘Hot Pink’ flowers early so the plants fill in fast and full. Dark green foliage sets off the pink blooms nicely making this an excellent choice for hanging baskets or mixed summer containers. plant profiles Nonstop® series Mocca tuberous begonia This popular tuberous begonia series now includes a chocolate coloured foliage companion. Like the original green-leaved Nonstop® begonias, the Nonstop® Mocca series has an upright mounding habit with 10 cm (4 in.) fully double flowers in five vibrant colours and a formula mix; deep orange, scarlet, orange, yellow and white. This vibrant series is ideal for hanging baskets and specialty containers. Annual vinca Height: 15-60 cm (6-24 in.) Spread: 15-60 cm (6-24 in.) Exposure: full sun to part shade Also known as Madagascar periwinkle, this summerflowering annual gives great results with minimal effort — no pinching or deadheading required. The glossy green leaves set off the single phlox-like blooms beautifully. Annual vinca will tolerate pollution and dust from street traffic, so it is an ideal choice for front gardens. Vinca is drought tolerant, but prefers regular watering. These tropical plants prefer warm weather, so don’t put them out in the garden too early in spring. Begonia tuberosa Go-go™ ‘Light Yellow’ and ‘Orange’ Go-go™ ‘Light Yellow’ and ‘Orange’ tuberous begonias Rich and vivid, extralarge flowers contrast beautifully with the deep green foliage of the Go-Go™ tuberous begonias. Go-Go™ offers long-lasting flower power and gardeners will enjoy these beauties all season long. Grows 20-25 cm (8-10 in.) tall and wide in partial shade. Combine with Xtreme™ impatiens for even more impact. Calibrachoa Cabaret™ ‘Hot Pink’ Sweet potato vine Height: 20-30 cm (8-12 in.) Spread: 1.5 m. (5 ft.) Exposure: sun to partial shade The ornamental sweet potato vine is enjoying a boost in popularity thanks to continued interest in container gardening. As a foliage accent, these vines are unparalleled in their versatility. They are most commonly used as the “spiller” in window boxes and patio pots, but the rapid growth rate of ornamental sweet potatoes makes them a useful annual groundcover as well. Available with light-green, red, butterscotch/bronze, tricolour or deep-purple leaves, the foliage can also be heart-shaped, or deeply serrated for a finer texture. The foliage is easily trimmed back if it gets too unruly. annuals GARDEN INSPIRATION | 3 annuals Canna indica ‘Lon01’ Tropicanna Black Canna ® A unique new canna named for its large, almost black, chocolate coloured foliage. Its flower spikes emerge bright red and in a few days mellow to orange. While most cannas require full sun, this variety needs some dappled shade. It will reach 1.5 – 1.8 m (5-6 ft.) in height. Excellent for specimen plantings or container use. This looks stunning in a shade garden, its dark foliage contrasting with other shade-loving plants.
