DEALING WITH
We’re the one-stop shop for
all your quality of life needs.
HOLIDAY
DEPLOYMENT
Military families typically don’t include
deployment anywhere on their holiday
wish list. Simply put, it’s not something
to look forward to around the “most
wonderful time of the year.”
However, with a little preparation and
creativity, families can survive and even
thrive during holidays away from their
loved one.
Specifically:
TAKE PHOTOS, MAKE VIDEOS.
Commit to sending pictures and recordings once
you realize that your Service Member will be away.
Sometimes a Service Member may not be able to talk to
loved ones on holidays, so having previously recorded
messages on hand can make them feel attached to the
festivities.
SEND CARE PACKAGES.
Let each family member decide what goes into
preparing a holiday care package. Try to include family
traditions that remind your Service Member of home.
For example, if your family has a special holiday dessert,
send a non-perishable version!
CREATE HOLIDAY CARDS.
Have each family member decorate their own holiday
card to send. It lets your loved one know that everyone
took the time to participate and personalize something
just for them.
For additional tips
visit the Fleet & Family
Support Center to speak
with our Deployment
Readiness team.

if they’re not home until April, we’re sure of something:

THERESA MISENKO
Work & Family Life Consultant
QHow long have you worked
at FFSC?
A I have worked here for
seventeen years. I started on
the first Monday of the
millennium, 3 January 2000.
I came on board as a deploy ment specialist and remained
in the same department for
my career. The department
did merge with Relocation in
2014, so I had the privilege of
working in that area as well.
If you would like to visit
the Family Readiness
Express (FRE), take a look
at the FFSC San Diego
Facebook page at www.
facebook.com/FFSCSD
or visit a military housing
area as scheduled below.
QWhat is the biggest
difference between when
you first started at FFSC in
2000 and today?
A FFSC is a much larger
organization than when I
first started. In San Diego
alone, we have doubled in size.
When I first came on board,
a Service Member had to go
to one of the major installations
to utilize our services. Now,
we have multiple locations
and the Service Members’ access has grown exponentially.
Also, all communication used to be done in person. Now
technology plays a big part in what we do.
QAfter nearly 17 years, what do you like most about
working with FFSC?
A The core of my job is so interesting. I love talking about this
rewarding, but challenging (military) lifestyle with groups
and individuals alike. We get to discuss how to handle
various issues. I know that at the end of the day, I have truly
made a difference for someone.
QYou’re very familiar with the military lifestyle. How did
you become affiliated with the Navy?
A I was an active duty spouse for more than twenty years.
During that time, I lived through multiple relocations
(both overseas and in the continental United States) and
many deployments. In addition to living the military lifestyle,
my position at FFSC has afforded me the wonderful
opportunity to get underway on many different ships to
conduct return and reunion classes for Sailors on the way
home from long deployments.
QNow that you are closing this chapter of your life, what
do you see yourself doing in retirement?
A I plan to maintain an active relationship with the military
community by volunteering with the Navy-Marine Corps
Relief Society and the American Red Cross.

STAYING CONNECTED:
FLEET & FAMILY BRANCH LOCATIONS
Fleet & Family Support Center (FFSC) has four off-base FFSC
branches located at several of the largest military housing areas
in San Diego County: Bayview Hills, Gateway Village, Murphy
Canyon and Village at Serra Mesa. Families living in these
communities have easy access to FFSC programs and services, as
they can attend workshops or have a counseling session within a
short drive or walk.
“This monthly club gives families the chance to engage with
each other socially, while sharing coupons and information that
benefits the family budget,” says Bridget Ferrer, work and family
life consultant at the Gateway Village branch. She adds, “This
club features an FFSC personal financial manager who highlights
a program each month that can help military families financially
plan for their future.”
“The off-base branches are located in actual units at the housing
sites, so it truly does have a more home-like, comfortable
atmosphere,” notes Denise Zuniga, work and family life
consultant at the Village at Serra Mesa branch.
In addition to workshops, individual appointments with a work
and family life consultant are available. Many clients utilize these
appointments for employment assistance. They can work on
their resumé, develop a job search plan and discuss interviewing
techniques, while guided by the expertise of a consultant. Clients
can also visit at any time to receive help with specific issues
facing military families such as relocation, deployment support,
and finding child care, among others.
A variety of workshops such as “Resumé Writing,” “Winning
Interview Techniques,” “Navy Spouse 101” and “Navigating
Childcare Options” are offered in these branches. One of the
newest and notable ones, “Cutting Costs with Coupons: Coupon
Exchange Club,” gives attendees an opportunity to exchange
coupons and receive budgeting advice from a personal financial
manager. Gateway Village’s Coupon Exchange Club has become
extremely popular.
The Family Readiness Express (FRE) also serves clients off base
by visiting Lincoln Military Housing communities that do not
have an on-site FFSC branch. The FRE is a recreational vehicle

The holidays can be a difficult time for Navy
Gold Star Families grieving the loss of their
loved one. For some, long-standing family
traditions either cease or feel incomplete.
The Holiday Memorial Tree Campaign and
associated events, offer the opportunity to
create new traditions, while honoring the
memory of the Fallen.
Three memorial trees will be erected at
San Diego locations: Naval Base Coronado,
Naval Base Point Loma and the Admiral
Baker Golf Clubhouse. Subsequently, the
trees will be decorated with ornaments
bearing the names of our Fallen Service
Members, lovingly handwritten by their
friends and family. The memorial trees will
be on display from November 21 through
January 2.
In 2015, a special ornament placement event
was held at the Admiral Baker location. Gold
Star Families were welcome to create an
ornament in honor of their loved one and
hand place it on the tree — all the while
sharing stories and finding support through
each other.
This year’s decorating event happens on
Sunday, December 4 from 11 am-3 pm at
the Admiral Baker Golf Clubhouse. Other
opportunities to create an ornament include
the Naval Base Coronado Holiday Concert
(Sunday, December 11, 4 pm), where Gold
Star Families are honored, as well as various
NEX tree lighting ceremonies at metro
installations.

BOB KLEIN
Clinical Counselor
Q How did you come to work at the Fleet & Family Support Center?
A I knew that I wanted to be in the counseling field. One of my mentors told
me that FFSC offered internships, so I started as a volunteer intern. After a
year, I applied for a job and have worked as a counselor for the past twenty eight years.
Q What are you most proud of about your job?
A I like when a client truly experiences personal growth and emotional healing.
I work with all types of clients and with different types of counseling:
marital, relationships, occupational work issues, stress management, sexual
assault survivors, and those just having a difficult time adjusting to life
changes. Seeing these different types of individuals has made me appreciate
and respect, in a new way, the Service Members and their families who have
chosen an active duty vocation.
Q What do you like about working with Service Members?
A Diversity. I have learned a lot about the world and various cultures. I also
like having the support of the commands throughout the counseling process.
We both want to make sure that the Service Member is succeeding in all that
they do.
Q What do you want people to know about your job?
A When individuals first come in to see a counselor, they are total strangers.
The fact that they trust me in total confidence to accept them is a humbling
experience. Additionally, I have a background in Judeo-Christian theology
and have a strong faith. This influences how I conduct myself and my
interactions with others.
Q What do you like to do for fun?
A I enjoy gardening with my wife. We have a raised garden bed at home where
we grow fruits and vegetables.

College Application & Admission Process
The college application process is in full
swing and keeping track of applications, test
scores, passwords and college accounts can
be confusing. It is a good idea to record all
information on a spreadsheet. Most colleges set
up online access for applicants to check on their
application status and to request any additional
information from applicants and send account
notifications via email. Check college accounts
frequently for notices of admittance, final
transcript requests and registration information.
Most colleges post all information to online
accounts.
Start Keeping Records
College may seem a long way off but it is time
to start recording your accomplishments. Many
university and scholarship applications ask for
details on co-curricular and extra-curricular
activities, awards, volunteer work or work
experience. Start recording all information on
everything you do. Include dates, events, award
names and contact information for coaches,
employers or volunteer coordinators.

You have only just started your first high school
classes and yet it is time to think about getting
involved in your school and community. In
addition to academic excellence, universities and
scholarships look for students who participate
outside their regular school classes. A sport,
club, scouts, academic team or non-profit is a
great way to get involved. Find something you
enjoy but do not overdo it, grades are still your
top priority.
