"It would be no exaggeration to say that, from both
theological and pastoral perspectives, the 20th century
was the age of eucharistic ecclesiology. Building upon
developments in biblical and patristic theology that began
already in the 19th century, 20th-century theologians
rediscovered the centrality of the eucharist in the life
of the Church. Basing themselves on key scriptural
passages, as well as the writings of Ignatius of Antioch,
Maximus the Confessor, Nicholas Cabasilas, and others,
leading modern Orthodox theologians – Nicholas
Afanassiev, Alexander Schmemann, John Meyendorff,
John Zizioulas, and their followers – focused on the
eucharist as the visible expression and manifestation of
the Church. Few today would deny the positive aspects
of this eucharistic revival, which has now entered into
the mainstream of Orthodox theological reflection. [...]
I suggest, however, that there is something lacking in this
vision, both theologically and pastorally."
