Dick Loonan
The Loonan family moved to their farm north of Corning in Adams County in 1972.
For the past 39 yrs., Dick and his daughter Judy have been known throughout the
Midwest for their beef seed stock operation featuring Red Angus, Red Simmental, and
Sim-Angus cattle. Dick was a fourth generation Loonan cattleman and had
continuously owned cattle since 9 yrs. of age. Judy stated that Dick, her dad, had a
great love for the cattle business and there were a lot of late nights when he would set
in his office figuring where the industry was going. Many a meeting was gone to and
explanations needed but he got us to where we are today. Red Angus was a great
addition and has put a fast forward to today and it is hard to believe that it was 24
years ago that we became members. One of dad’s favorite sayings was “If you ain't
the lead dog the view never changes."
Although Dick thrived on his success as a business man, his true joy in life was
making memories with his family. As a proud grandpa, he shared his love of nature
and horses with his grandkids from a very young age. He also enjoyed taking them on
vacations to Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, along with many other adventures.
When he became a great grandpa, he took much delight in spending time with the
great grandkids. His family will always remember his love for Iowa State Cyclone
sports and his passion for collecting inspirational quotes.
Dick was a true trailblazer for the Red Angus breed in Iowa. Utilizing the maternal
and strong performance traits in an industry leading cross breeding system. Leaving a
legacy deep in tradition.
Dan Johnson
Dan worked for Vet Provisions at the time of his death. He also was managing partner
of Solution Genetics. Dan was very grateful for the commitment and support of his
partners, Cheryl and Cassie, in growing Solution Genetics with international
recognition showing national champion Red Angus in Denver, Colo., Louisville, Ky.,
Ft. Worth, Texas, and Billings, Mont. He was a visionary, recognizing the maternal
fault free traits of the Red Angus breed while yet possessing show ring eye-appeal.
Dan and Solution Genetics have introduced these traits to many youth who will carry
on Dan’s vision.
North American Junior Red Angus Event was near and dear to Dan. As one of the
founders, he took great pride in watching the youth of the beef industry grow into
future leaders in the cattle business. He was an advisor for the Iowa Jr. Limousin
Association, Iowa Jr. Red Angus Association, Red Angus National Show and Sale
Committee. Dan’s passion for youth extended to the youth of St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church. In 1993, he and Cheryl raised enough funds to take 19 youth from the parish
to the World Youth Day in Denver to see Pope John Paul II.
The vision that Dan had for the Red Angus breed will not soon be forgotten, after all,
the juniors that he mentored will soon lead the breed. Hopefully, these future leaders
will bring with them the friendly attitude, the determination to succeed, and
camaraderie that Mr. Johnson helped instill in them.

The Red Angus breed is literally on fire, being the fastest growing beef breed in North America
the past four years. What is more amazing is the fact that this growth in registration numbers
has been during a decline in national beef cow numbers to their lowest point since the 1950s!
The reason Red Angus are hot is simple – Red Angus cattle are highly efficient converters of
grass, hay and grain by-products into beef. Red Angus also offers a docile temperament,
strong maternal traits, rapid growth and high marbling into their finished carcass. It has truly
been a great ride watching the Red Angus breed grow and thrive since the first Iowa Beef Expo
in 1976.
2014 offers to be one of the greatest years to be in the cattle business in the history of
civilization. Regrowth in an industry that is at its lowest production point is always exciting… but
when you add to that the need to repopulate the southern part of the United States with RED
hided, heat tolerant and highly efficient cattle…RED ANGUS females will reign supreme!
We have added a segment to this year’s Red Angus Classic. Following the cattle videoing
preview on Monday afternoon, we will be holding a special presentation from my good friend
Clint Berry. Clint was the past RAAA Commercial Marketing Director and is currently one of the
top representatives for Superior Livestock Marketing. Clint will be giving a presentation in the
North Annex (sale ring) on Monday afternoon at approximately 5:00 pm. CR Cattle Co. and
Rocking R Ranch both of Douds, Iowa will be sponsoring snacks and beverages. Following the
informative meeting and “pep rally” of Red Angus cattle, there will be a question and answer
session with Clint. If you haven’t attended the Expo for awhile and want to come see the new
direction and enthusiasm for Red Angus cattle, please plan to attend this special event.
Finally, it is truly a pleasure to be the sale manager and auctioneer for the 2014 Iowa Red
Angus Classic. The breeders and consignors have worked hard to bring you a top quality cattle

Auction Items
Another year has flown by and it has been a great year for the Iowa Junior Red Angus
youth. This past year, we held a Field Day show in June in conjunction with the Iowa
Simmental Juniors. The show was held in Indianola and was a great time!
The Iowa State Fair Junior show had approximately 70 entries and was super competitive
as always. We awarded a new award this year called “The Spirit of the Reds” award. The
recipient is selected by an anonymous committee that observed the juniors before and
during the show. The award is given to a youth that demonstrates superior character, has a
strong work ethic, has a cheerful attitude and is an all around great youth. The recipient for
2013 was Jess Schlitter.
As the Junior Advisor, I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who supports
our Red Angus youth. These youth are a great example of how raising and caring for
livestock helps develop our youth into good stockman and even better people. Without your
generous donations and purchases, our program would not exist, as we get no assistance
from the National Association. So THANK YOU, your kindness and generosity is greatly
appreciated. I would also encourage everyone to keep these sponsors/donors in mind when
you are making purchases throughout the year.

This March born heifer is a very deep bodied, thick heifer that could be a herd builder. She
is sired by the Opportunity 53Y bull, the same sire as the Champion Junior Bull calf from the
2013 Iowa State Fair. She is one of very few Opportunity 53Y heifers that are being sold, so
be one of the first to have one!

Power, performance and muscle is how you will describe this RMJ Redman 1T son. He was
born Feb. 1 in Iowa, which if you remember last year, was one of the coldest weeks we had
all year. Ace had his ears frost bit, but don’t let that stop you on this one, everyone told me
they don’t judge ears. If you are looking to bring power and performance to your herd, ACE

Read this fella’s pedigree carefully. Not only is he out of a first calf heifer, but he is a double
bred Dina, and double bred Indeed, you are definitely not going to go wrong here! His
EPD’s have a super spread and with just a 67 pound birth weight, he is sure to be a heifer
bull. I cannot say enough good things about this bull, he is just like his sire Bullett, a
popular bull I sold last year at the Expo. He is very dark red, super thick, stands on a huge
hoof, and has a disposition second to none. If you want to purchase a bull that has genetic
predictability, has the ability to allow you to sleep at night during calving, and puts pounds
on the trailer at weaning, then check out Double D. You will not be disappointed. We are

sake; moderate framed, very easy keeping and a terrific attitude! This bull has a great EPD

A pedigree that reads like the great sire history of the Red Angus breed, Ole’s Oscar, Glacier
Logan, Six Mile Sakic, and LCC Cheyenne. Then you go to the maternal side and see
Abigrace, Siera, and Julia, this heifer has it all. Out of a first calf heifer, her EPD’s have a
spread of 102, and a total maternal EPD of 50! If carcass production is your goal, check out
her marbling EPD. I treat my replacement heifers as heifers and not fat feedlot heifers, so
she isn’t going to fat and fluffy, but she is as solid as they come. Do not overlook this heifer.

Powerful and soft and soggy describe this heifer perfectly. She has a pedigree that is full of
power and she lives up to her genetics. She has a big belly, a big square hip, and stands
on near perfect legs. She has all the right EPD’s and has performance numbers to make
anyone a believer. She is very dark red in color and out of a first calf heifer. This heifer will

When we flushed Dina, our plan was to get a few embryos as “insurance” to the unthinkable,
but ol’Dina had other plans, and we got 21 embryos! We flushed her to two bulls at the same
time, Makin Hay and Fat Tony. So far, all of the calves have been Makin’ Hay’s but keep in
mind you might end up with a Fat Tony, so you will have to DNA the calves. I cannot say
enough about how much we love the Dina cow. Dina 754 was our very first Red Angus
purchase, and after trying to buy her at Denver, we finally got it done after she went to the
Black Hills Stock show and was named Reserve Grand Champion Red Angus in 2009. We
have never regretted purchasing her and she has proven to be priceless! She produces the
right kind every time. Do not hesitate on these embryos. Selling 1 package of 3 embryos
each with a guarantee of 1 pregnancy if implanted by a certified ET technician.

This past summer three very influencial Red Angus breeders were here visiting
our cow herd and each of them said “I wish you guys would let go of one of these
Phyllis daughters” – well here you go! RRA Robin 349 exemplifies everything
good about her dam… style, soundness, power, disposition just to name a few.
We believe that Robin could be one of her top daughters in the show ring but
more importantly, a future herd matron and potential donor. We will be retaining a
flush interest in this young lady. The sire, Red SSS Oly 554T is a top herd sire out
of the famed SSS program in Canada that is being used heavily throughout North
America. We are extremely happy with his progeny! RRA Robin 349 also has
three flush mate brothers on test in our bull pen. We are moving our bull and
female sale to our farm on March 15th and felt like we should be at the Beef Expo
to let folks know that we would love to have them come to the farm and see for

MNS Dixie 3123 is as stylish of a heifer as they come. It is tough to find a female with that
attractive of a front end, but still has the dimension and rib shape to compete with the best of
them, while still going on to be a front pasture cow. She is a female that excels on the profile
and will turn many heads because of that. Dixie is sired by Red Northline Trueblood who was a
National Champion a few years back out in Denver, and her dam is an extremely functional

The talk of Agribition in the bull calves was the “Curve!” I saw him going into the
2-year-old cow class alongside his beautiful dam and watched the pair win the
class. I approached Brett & Traci Wildman before the Grand Champion Female
drive and made a deal for half of him. They were named Grand Champion
Female…cool! In fact, Curve’s pedigree has three other females in it that were
named Grand Champion at Agribition… 82K and 6M were in 2002 and Detour’s
dam in 2008. Curve’s dam sold for $25,000 for half interest! Flush in dam recently
sold to Pam Hanson in South Dakota for $8,000.

Sale Terms and Conditions
TERMS: Terms of the sale are cash, check, or other terms agreed to in writing between
seller, buyer, and sale manager payable immediately upon conclusion of the sale
before animals will be moved. Sale Manager reserves the right to require a certified
check as settlement before releasing any cattle.
PURCHASER’S RISK: All animals are the owner’s risk prior to their sale and become
property of the purchaser as soon as declared sold by the auctioneer.
BIDDING: Any disputes or challenges regarding bids or tie bids will be settled by the
auctioneer and his decision will be final.
CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A certificate of registry for each animal will be
transferred to the buyer at the seller’s expense.
ANNOUNCMENTS: Any errors or changes in information contained in the catalog will
be announced from the block and such announcements shall take precedence over the
information contained herein.
HEALTH: All animals are eligible for interstate shipment. Interstate health papers
prepared by an accredited veterinarian will be furnished on each animal sold.
Arrangements for International Shipment should be made with the sale manager prior
to the auction. All efforts for the exportaton of cattle can be arranged through the sale
manager.
BREEDING GUARANTEE: All animals are guaranteed by the seller as outlined in the
Red Angus Association of America Code of Ethical Sale Practices.
LIABILITIES: All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The seller,
auction facility, and sale manager assume no liability for any accidents that may occur.
Neither does the seller, auction facility, or sale manager assume liability for the loss or
injury to livestock due to theft, mysterious disappearance, sickness, improper handling
or Act of God. It is to be clearly understood that the sale manager and its
represenatives act only as a medium between the buyer and the seller. They are not
