Once again the committee have worked hard to bring the directory to print, providing a list of complementary, natural and alternative health practitioners who work in towns and villages throughout the Scottish Borders and beyond. It is a well known directory and is used by many people in health, social and support professions, as well as by individual members of the public, in the selection and referral for treatment. As part of the membership process all practitioners listed have provided proof of qualifications, professional membership, insurance and regulation for their chosen discipline (where possible and appropriate). Initials used to describe qualifications, regulations and professional associations have been listed in the directory for your convenience. Choosing and CONTACTING A PRACTITIONER Contact the practitioner using the details provided in the directory. Many practitioners provide further details about the therapy they offer on the Borders Therapies website, or on the practitioner’s own personal website where they may also list their treatment prices. It is important to feel comfortable with your practitioner in order to have a supportive, therapeutic experience with them. Feel free to have an initial chat before booking a session. We particularly encourage you to ask the practitioner the following questions once you have found someone you wish to work with: • Would this therapy be appropriate for, and has the practitioner experience of your particular condition or issue? • What is the cost of a session and how frequently do you need to get treatment in order to see changes? • How does the therapy work, what are the contra-indications? All the therapies listed may be used in conjunction with conventional medicine and many practitioners prefer if a diagnosis has already been established by your doctor. We do not recommend that any current medical treatment you are receiving be stopped without the prior knowledge and advice of your doctor. AIMS & OBJECTIVES « 5 OUR AIMS AND OBJECTIVES We aim to provide a forum for complementary healthcare practitioners to work together. In short we exist to: • Integrate and collaborate with the goal of optimal health for all • Promote quality, safety and efficacy in all our listed practitioners and therapies A full list of our Aims and Objectives can be found on our website www.borderstherapies.co.uk CONTACTING BORDERS INTEGRATED HEALTH GROUP You can keep in touch with our news and views via Facebook, Twitter (@borderstherapy) and via our Health Blog by signing up here: www.borderstherapies.co.uk/health-blog/ We always welcome feedback which can be sent via email to: [email protected] Borders Therapies is a service provided by the Borders Integrated Healthcare Group, which was established in 2001 to produce a directory of qualified therapists made available as a resource for the Medical and Caring Professions and the General Public as well as Employers wanting to play an active role in encouraging health and wellbeing in their workforce. Working towards a truly integrated healthcare model There is growing recognition among medical professionals that complementary therapies can play an important part in healthcare. Increasingly, patients, too, are looking for an integrated approach to healthcare, combining conventional medicine with holistic approaches and addressing the person as a whole, not just the symptoms or underlying health issue. Complementary healthcare can be used to enhance the standard healthcare you are already receiving. For example, therapies such as acupuncture, reflexology or reiki are often used in an attempt to ease the unpleasant side effects of cancer 6 » About complementary therapies treatments such as nausea, vomiting and pain. Counselling or massage therapy may be offered as a way to help patients manage their stress and create an overall sense of well-being. ‘Mindfulness’ is emerging as a secular approach to meditation that helps patients reduce stress and achieve a more peaceful state of mind, thus creating ideal psychological conditions for recovery from illness and maintaining health and wellbeing. When conventional treatment methods haven’t worked Often people find that after trying various conventional methods to no avail, they would like to try something different, either alongside their standard medical care, or as an alternative. For example, smokers who have tried recommended methods of quitting such as nicotine replacement with little success will often look to complementary therapies such as hypnotherapy for help. Complementary therapists also frequently support people who have not found relief from their symptoms through conventional healthcare approaches, including people suffering from chronic problems such as pain, stress, anxiety, depression, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), multiple sclerosis (MS), emotional discomfort or distress etc. Who can benefit from complementary therapies? Our therapists offer tailored treatment programmes for men and women including healthcare during pregnancy, children, schools and educational establishments, the elderly, people on low incomes (please check out members’ profile pages for discount options on offer), visitors to the Scottish Borders, health professionals and carers, employees in the workplace and in some cases, animals. Our therapists support your health needs in a variety of settings including consulting rooms in the practitioner’s home, visiting clients’ homes, workplacebased locations, private sector complementary healthcare centres and NHS surgeries. None of our responsible and professional complementary healthcare practitioners will suggest that you cease standard medical treatment. Instead, what we are striving for, is the development of a good working relationship with medical professionals, with the patients’ health and well-being as our shared primary goal. How do you know that you can trust our practitioners’ professionalism? As most complementary therapies are currently unregulated within the UK (with the exception of chiropractic, osteopathy and physiotherapy), we ensure high professional standards among our members by, wherever possible, encouraging membership of a relevant professional body, who will ensure that its members have achieved a high level of training and experience and are working to certain standards of good practice. We only list practitioners who have provided us with proof of their qualifications and are fully insured. PRACTITIONERS DIRECTORY « 7 ACUPUNCTURE, Traditional ACUPUNCTURE, Western Medical Acupuncture is part of the traditional medicine of China which has been practised for thousands of years. It looks to help underlying causes as well as symptoms. This is done by the insertion of fine needles into the patient’s skin at special points called acupuncture points. Other techniques used are moxibustion (the application of heat to acupuncture points), massage, and dietary advice to help with physical and emotional problems. Western medical acupuncture is a therapeutic modality involving the insertion of fine needles; it is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence-based medicine. Western medical acupuncture is principally used by conventional healthcare practitioners and diagnosis is made by conventional medical methods. It acts mainly by stimulating the nervous system and is mainly used to treat musculoskeletal pain, including myofascial trigger point pain. It may also be effective for postoperative pain, nausea and some other conditions. It involves learning more about how you are designed to move and how to free yourself up mentally and physically so that you can move with more ease and effectiveness, have more control over your reactions and think more clearly. Above all, it helps you bring more mindfulness and practical intelligence into everyday activities in a way that is immensely empowering. Lessons are usually designed around activities that interest you, your aspirations and concerns. Aromatherapy is the systemic use of essential oils in holistic therapies to improve physical and emotional wellbeing. Essential oils, extracted from plants, possess distinctive therapeutic properties that can be used to help improve health and thereby possibly prevent disease. The oils can be used in massage, baths, inhalations, compresses, gels and lotions. Both their physiological and psychological effects combine well to promote positive health. Aromatherapy is a very effective therapy for stress-related problems. PRACTITIONERS DIRECTORY « 9 AYURVEDA BOWEN THERAPY Ayurveda is the oldest known system of holistic health care originating in India several thousand years ago. Ayurveda literally means the science (veda) of life (ayur), addressing all levels of our being – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual – through an understanding of our intimate connection with Nature. It recognizes that each one of us is unique and shows us how to live a healthier and more balanced lifestyle according to our individual constitution and needs. An ayurvedic approach focuses on diet, lifestyle, yoga, massage and herbal remedies. Bowen Therapy is gentle, non-invasive and can be carried out through light clothing. It consists of cross fibre moves over muscles, tendons, and ligaments that enable the spinal reflexes to assess and reset tension levels. Bowen can be used to help people with back, neck and shoulder problems, but can also be helpful with asthma, migraines, M.E., and similar problems. ‘The body is a genius and Bowen speaks its language’. COMBINED DECONGESTIVE THERAPY This is a specialist therapy designed to address lymphoedema, the swelling of part of the body – usually an arm or a leg – due to the build up of fluid in the body tissues. The therapy generally combines manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), layered bandages or compression garments, exercises and skin care. MLD is a very specialised massage aiming to stimulate the fluid away from the affected area. It’s very gentle and completely different from other forms of massage, so should only be carried out by a registered therapist. A set of exercises is also advised by the therapist to try and maximise drainage. PRACTITIONERS DIRECTORY « 11 COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY All psychological therapies have a broad aim to help the person increase their selfreflection and awareness, so that changes in perceptions, attitudes and behaviours, towards a more fulfilling and meaningful life, can be embraced more easily. Note: We have brought together all the various forms of counselling and psychotherapy into one section. We recognise that it can be quite confusing for the lay person trying to understand the difference between them, and which method or approach might be best for them, as there are wide variations in approach, training requirements, and expected length and frequency of work. We therefore suggest that you ask any questions that you might have when contacting an individual therapist, so that you can find the best ‘fit’ for yourself. The therapist’s ‘listening’ hands focus on patterns of congestion and trauma, primarily arising in the skull and spine, yet connecting with the body as a whole. Subtle contact with the craniosacral system, (one of the body’s lesser known physiological systems), encourages a person’s inherent healing process, rather than imposing change. It should feel comfortable and energising and is suitable for all ages, from babies to the elderly, and for almost any condition. It works by tapping on the relevant meridian points of the body, releasing blockages within the energy system, thereby freeing the negative emotions that prevent us from experiencing happiness and moving towards our goals in life. It fuses the ancient knowledge of Feng Shui with insights from modern science. It is now believed that electro-magnetic pollution from household appliances and wiring and/or microwaves from DECT phones and masts can have a deleterious effect on health. In addition, harmful earth energy lines can have a weakening effect on the body’s immune system, especially when our beds are exposed to such energies and the body’s ability to self repair during sleep is impaired. These ‘harmful energies’ can be identified and either rectified, or advice given on shielding, avoidance or removal techniques. Energy healing is a relaxing experience that helps to bring balance to the body, mind and soul. This type of energy therapy has been recognised by many cultures as a means of restoring health and enhancing well-being. It is a very pleasing way to be, the physical body completely relaxed, and the mind, whilst very alert, aware and in total control, is much calmer and still. During the relaxation, confidence building and positive thinking suggestions are given, with techniques taught to reinforce this, and specific negative issues alleviated. Following a session of deep relaxation, a feeling of emotional serenity is usually experienced, with energy levels renewed and a resolve to achieve positive aims strengthened and reinforced. Kinesiology combines manual muscletesting with principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, energy balancing and other therapies. Muscle-testing reveals the location and nature of the imbalance, evaluating how glands, organs, the lymphatic & nervous system, circulation, along with muscle and bone structures, etc. and combines a range of gentle but powerful corrections, which can help to bring about change and balance. The muscles are not tested for physical strength, but for the quality of their response. Diet, nutrition, massage & emotional support can be used along with the physical and energetic corrections. MEDITATION Meditative practices can lead to deeper sense of calm and empathy for others and we may touch our own inner strength. Regular meditation can help create a more robust personality and enable us to gain a sense of compassion for ourselves and for others. Many sufferers from stress, depression or anxiety find that regular meditation sessions help them to cope better with the symptoms of their condition. Recent research into the benefits of meditation suggests that regular practitioners show more positive emotions, better mental health and even physical wellbeing than non-practitioners. MYOFASCIAL RELEASE THERAPY MFR is a non-invasive, gentle, full-body, hands-on technique that releases the fascial system, a 3-dimensional web that connects and surrounds every system and cell in the body, more commonly called Connective Tissue. As fascial restrictions do not show up on CAT scans, MRIs or X rays, many patients are suffering unresolved physical and emotional pain due to undiagnosed fascial trauma, which can occur from accident, infection, injury, surgery, repetitive movement or poor posture. Myofascial Release provides a sustained, gentle pressure or stretch allowing the fascia to return to its normal resting length - restoring health, relieving pain and measurably increasing range of movement.
