VI’S CORNER: “NORM”
BEVERLY HILLS—My name is “Norm”,
and I’m a six month old little kitty, with
a lot of personality. Or, so I’ve been told.
My mom was a feral cat who had five of us
little ones. We were all rescued and
brought to the Friends of Animals Foundation, where we are being very well
cared for and ready for our purrfect
homes.
I’m well behaved, playful, and very
sweet and loving. And, how about my
beautiful coat? I hope that I don’t sound
too egotistical by telling you all of my
good points. So, you’ll just have to come
to see for yourself if everything that I’ve
told you is the truth.
To show you how smart I am, too, I’ll
tell you some interesting facts about us
felines. However, I must confess that I
got them from DailyRandomFacts.com
See, I’m honest, too.
B y V i L o ga n
A cat can jump up to five times its own
height in a single bound; a cat can hear
high frequency sounds up to two octaves
higher than a human; a cat can travel at
a top speed of approximately thirty one
miles per hour over a short distance; a female cat is called a Queen (well, naturally!) or Molly; and, when cats are happy
or pleased, they squeeze their eyes shut.
I hope that I’ve told you some things that
you didn’t know before.
Now, I hope that you will come to see
me. If you would like to see all of my kitty
and doggy friends that are here, you can
see them all by checking the website,
which is: foafla.petfinder.com. Then all
that you have to do is call for an appointment to see us. We’re all waiting to meet
you!

SANTA MONICA—A 26-year-old woman
was charged with vehicular man slaughter and driving under the influence after
hitting an Australian tourist with her car
on August 21 in Downtown Santa Monica.
The crash was reported at 8:20 p.m. in
the 300 block of Colorado Avenue. Gary
Roberts Mara, 50, was crossing Colorado
Avenue against a solid red "don't walk"
sign with his 8-year-old daughter and wife.
Cara Cameron was reportedly driving
her 2005 Ford Focus eastbound on Colorado from Second Street on a green light
as the family entered the crosswalk.
Cameron was not able to avoid the pedestrians and hit Mara and his daughter.
Mara's 43-year-old wife, Julianne, reported that he picked up his daughter
when he noticed the oncoming car and
threw her out of the way.
The Australian family was vacationing
in the United States to celebrate Mara's
fiftieth birthday as well as his wife and his
tenth wedding anniversary. They were
planning on continuing their trip to
Hawaii before the collision occurred.
Cameron remained at the scene until
the Santa Monica Police arrived at the
scene. Mara was seriously injured and was
taken to a local trauma center where he
was pronounced dead in the early morning hours of August 21. Mara's daughter,
Olivia, sustained minor injuries and his
wife did not have any injuries.
At the time of the investigation, it became evident that Cameron was under the
influence and was arrested for the felonies
driving while intoxicated and vehicular
manslaughter. Cameron was released

suring he cannot continue to do this to
other young women,” said Cameron in a
statement. “I refuse to be raped again by
a corrupt Peruvian legal system.”
Cameron's personal blog detailed some
of her experiences with alcohol and drugs.
In a post made in 2010 titled "Giant dark
shades to hide the truth," Cameron wrote
of about drinking in her car before meeting some friends in a restaurant. “I swig
the bottle again, my mouth puckering and
throat burning as I force my throat to contract and take it with no chaser to cool the
fire… I suddenly feel like being drunk. Really, really drunk." Additionally, the model claimed on her blog to have used marijuana, cocaine, Xanax and DMT, a psychedelic.
Anyone with information regarding the
collision is urged to contact investigator
Chris Dawson at (310) 458-8954 or the
watch commander at (310) 458-8495.

BEVERLY HILLS—September was looking hopeful for Southern California drivers as summer was ending and residents
were eagerly anticipating that dropping
gas prices would accompany it. And
while gas prices were on the decline in
September, at the most $4.15/gal; ufortunately, October is bringing a brand new
wave of soaring gas prices.
According to californiagasprices.com,
as of October 1st gas prices have continued to rise drastically shooting up from
$4.16/gal to nearly $4.50/gal. Perhaps it’s
time that the feud with gas prices ends,
with alternative fuel vehicles looking
more desirable than ever.
Hybrid cars run on electric batteries and
little gasoline, making commuting eas-
ier on the consumers’ wallet. Hybrids are
available in all different car types such as
Sedans, SUVs, Lexus, Prius, pickups, and
coupes.
As of October 4th, gas prices in Beverly Hills were looking steep as it was
recorded at the 76 on 427 N. Crescent
Drive and S. Santa Monica Boulevard that
the price of gasoline was $5.19/gal.
Prices are lower by ten cents at the Mobil on Wilshire Blvd and N. Stanley
Drive. Gas by the gallon is $4.75 at the 76
on Wilshire Blvd and Merv Griffin Way.
The cheapest recorded price was at the
shell located on 391 S. Robertson Blvd
and W. Olympic Blvd at $4.39/gal.
Be smart; look for cheaper gas prices to
help economize.

WOODLAND HILLS—On Friday,
September 28, a new business
sprouted up in the city when investment management firm Edelman Financial Services LLC officially opened offices in the area.
Located at 21550 Oxnard St., Suite
950, the firm is headed by financial
advisor, author and talk show host
Ric Edelman. His company provides financial planning and investment management services for individuals and families as well as
401(k) plans and institutional investment management for busi-
nesses.
The decision was made to open an
office due to high demand, according
to a news release.
“We receive hundreds of phone
calls and emails every week from people seeking financial advice and information, so we are opening more
local offices to help them,” Edelman
said in a statement.
Edelman, a 25-year veteran of the
financial industry, has offices in 13
states while managing $7.9 billion
for more than 17,000 clients across
the country as of June 30, 2012.
While most investment firms only
serve the wealthy, Edelman reportedly offers assistance to those who
are not yet millionaires.
“Although many of our clients
have a high net worth, the vast majority of our clients are not in that
exclusive realm. Our clients typically
are middle class folks trying to pay
for college for their kids while trying
to secure their own retirement. It’s
an honor to serve them,” Edelman
said.
While most investment companies are corporate owned, Edelman
Financial is one of the few that remains independent. In fact, Edelman
himself has been named #1 Independent Financial Advisor three
times according to Barron’s ranking
of the Top 100 Independent Financial
Advisors in 2009, 2010 and 2012.
The ranking was based on assets
under management, revenue generated for the firm and the overall quality of the practice.

LOS ANGELES—A salmonella outbreak from a Trader Joe's brand of
peanut butter has caused the maker of
the product to recall 101 products that
contain nuts.
Sunland Inc., a New Mexico-based
company, has expanded the recall to include almond butter, cashew butters,
tahini and blanched and roasted products.
Some of the newer products that
have been added to the recall are a variety of cookies sold at Whole Foods
that contain peanut butter, peanut butter cracker snacks sold at Stop &
Shop supermarkets and various ice
cream and chocolate snack products.
Overall, Sunland Inc. has recalled
101 products and several retailers
have issued additional recalls for items
that were made with Sunland ingredients.
The company sells its nuts and nut
butters to large groceries as well as
other distributors around the nation.
The recall began when Trader Joe's
Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter
made with sea salt was linked to salmonella illnesses.
"Public health investigators are using DNA 'fingerprints' of Salmonella
bacteria obtained through diagnostic
testing with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, or PFGE, to identify cases of illness that may be part of this
outbreak," stated the Center for Dis-
ease Control and Prevention (CDC).
"They are using data from PulseNet,
the national subtyping network made
up of state and local public health laboratories and federal food regulatory
laboratories that performs molecular
surveillance of foodborne infections."
The CDC reported 30 illnesses in 19
states that are traced back to the
Trader Joe's peanut butter from June
11 to September 11. No other food has
been linked to the illnesses, however,
Sunland recalled products that were
manufactured on the same equipment as the Trader Joe's product.
Of the 30 that became ill, almost
two-thirds were children under the age
of ten. No deaths have been reported.
Salmonella is found most dangerous
for children and the elderly due to
weak immune systems. Salmonella
can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 hours to 72 hours after infection, known as salmonellis.
According to the U.S. Department of
Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, Salmonella is a microscopic bacteria that passes from feces
of people or animals to other people.
The bacteria causes an estimated 1.4
million cases of foodbourne illnesses
and over 400 deaths a year in the United States.
To view the full list of products that
have been recalled, go to the Food and
Drug Administration's website.

MALIBU—On Monday, October 1,
the City of Malibu Planning Commission opted to delay voting on the
Malibu Middle and High School Campus Improvement Project until December 3.
The decision was made to delay the
vote due to controversy over the
parking lot component of the project
which calls for no light fixtures. The
Planning Commission had requested
this amendment to the project at an
August 7 meeting in addition to another one requiring Santa MonicaMalibu Unified School District to
minimize existing lighting on campus
to prevent pollution and not harm existing views.
Even though the Planning Commission’s wishes were granted by the
city planning department, officials
from the SMMUSD asked that the resolution be delayed. Their reasoning
was due to the district officials waiting on verification from the California Division of the State Architect on
whether state permits would allow an
unlit parking lot to be built.
Commissioner David Brotman said
he was skeptical of SMMUSD’s in-
tentions. He said he did not want the
community’s wishes to be overlooked
in the school district’s communications with state officials.
In response, Malibu City Planning
Director Joyce Parker-Bozylinski told
the commission that Malibu’s planning department has also been in
communication with the State Architect’s office.
Meanwhile, Assistant City Attorney Gregg Kovacevich advised commissioners to reissue a notice for public hearing on the campus project if
they had obtained new, previously
undisclosed information that was going to affect their vote on the resolution.
Chair John Mazza lobbied for a
vote on all aspects of the project except the parking lot but Kovacevich
said that could not be done and the
vote must wait until December.
In addition to a parking lot, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s large-scale project calls for
construction of a new academic building, renovation of several existing
classrooms and the creation of new
student drop-off and pick-up lanes.

TOLL A CC ESS F OR Z ERO EMISSION VEHIC LES
By Damian Kelly
WOODLAND HILLS—Local Assemblyman Bob Blumenfield's bill that
would allow new clean-energy vehicles
free access to toll lanes was signed into
law by California Governor Jerry Brown
on Friday, September 28.
Several reports indicate AB2405
would be in effect should California
cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego choose
to convert existing carpool lanes to
high-occupancy toll lanes to help reduce congestion in the state.
The bill seeks to encourage drivers to
buy plug-in hybrids and certified zeroemission vehicles. These include vehicles that run on electricity, hydrogen
fuel cells or compressed natural gas.
California has a few HOT lanes including a 14-mile stretch of southbound Interstate 680 in Alameda and
Santa Clara counties, and a 20-mile
stretch of Interstate 15 in San Diego
County.
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is testing
a pilot project of HOT lanes on interstates 10 and 110. In addition, the San
Francisco Bay area's Metropolitan
Transportation Commission is developing a regional HOT network.
Blumenfield's bill comes as a program that permitted solo drivers of hybrid vehicles to access carpool lanes
ended on July 1, 2011. Hybrid vehicles
run on gasoline and batteries.
The Department of Motor Vehicles
will be issuing stickers to qualified
clean air vehicles that will allow solo
drivers access to existing carpool lanes.

GOV. BROWN BANS GAY C ONV ERSION T HERAP Y
By Ivetta Babadjanian
SACRAMENTO—Governor Jerry
Brown announced on Sunday, September 30 that a bill has been signed
into law which bans a form of therapy set to change a minor's sexual
orientation from gay to straight.
"This bill bans non-scientific 'therapies' that have driven young people
to depression and suicide,'' Brown released in a statement. "These practices have no basis in science or
medicine and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery."
The bill will disallow mental health
practitioners from reparative therapy on minors under the age of 18,
which has been deemed dangerous
and abusive by the gay rights community.
It was introduced to the state senate by Democratic Senator Ted Lieu
of Torrance last February in an attempt to raise awareness of the now
discredited methods done by mental
health practitioners. Lieu stated the
ban was a result of the psychiatric organization, the world's largest of its
kind with over 36,000 members,
conclusion that reparative therapy increases the likelihood of self-destructive behavior and depression.
"No one should stand idly by while
children are being psychologically
abused, and anyone who forces a
child to try to change their sexual orientation must understand this is
unacceptable," Lieu said.
The bill, SB 1172, was initially opposed by Republican lawmakers as
they believe the state has no right to
interfere with a parent's decision on
how to raise their child. The conservative Pacific Justice Institute stated
it will file a lawsuit claiming the bill
goes against constitutional protections, including the rights of patients to have access to information
and free speech rights of therapists.
The Institute claims that many
people have been treated successful-
ly and it is unjust that due to this new
law, many children will go untreated
and will never realize their heterosexual potential.
"LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender) youth will now be protected from a practice that has not
only been debunked as junk science,
but has been proven to have drastically negative effects on their well-being," Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin said in a statement.
Psychiatrist Robert L. Spitzer apologized earlier this year for his 2003
study of reparative therapy and his
claim that it can help gays and lesbians become straight.
"I believe I owe the gay community an apology for my study making
unproven claims of the efficacy of
reparative therapy," Spitzer said in a
letter to the editor of the Archives of
Sexual Behavior. "I also apologize to
any gay person who wasted time and
energy undergoing some form of

reparative therapy because they believed that I had proven that reparative therapy works with some 'highly motivated' individuals."
Overall, Brown signed 65 bills on
Saturday, September 29 and vetoed
23. The bill goes into effect on January 1.

“ JERSEY SHORE” RET URNS FOR FINAL FIST P UMP
HOLLYWOOD—It’s hard to believe that
the gang of “ Jersey Shore” will bid farewell
after its sixth season which premiered on
Thursday, October 4. When the reality hit
invaded MTV back in 2009 it was a firestorm
with critics arguing the series depicted

criticism just propelled the series to new
heights as it still remains the network’s highest rated series of all-time.

their independence.
The first season was unlike any other as the
roommates clashed, but ultimately bonded
as a family. The second season took the cast
to Miami and is perhaps to this day my favorite of all the seasons; there was just so
much drama happening. Season 3 they returned to Seaside Heights, with new roommate Deena Cortese who feuded with Sammi early on. The network chose to height-

their original stomping ground.
I will be honest things started to take a dip
at the start of season four and the hype has
slowly dwindled down. It could be the fact
that they’ve spent so much time in Seaside

the summer. While audiences were still
watching, the ratings were beginning to slip.
To be honest this last season will be quite interesting to see how things unfold.

UNITED STATES—Even before winter begins, it is time to plan for it to end. Bulbs
(including corms, tubers, rhizomes and
tuberous roots) of many of the earliest
spring flowers that bloom while the weather is still cool late in winter should begin to
get planted about now. They are still dormant and not all that impressive yet, but
have already stored everything they need to
be ready to bloom as soon as they think it
is time. Since the weather will be getting
cooler through autumn before it gets
warmer at the end of winter, even the earliest blooming of spring bulbs will stay dormant for a while, and have quite a bit of time
to slowly disperse roots before their foliage
eventually peeks through the soil.
Bulbs planted later will likely bloom later,
which is actually an advantage for 'phasing'
bulbs. Like vegetables, bulbs can be planted in phases every two or three weeks, depending on the duration of the bloom cycle of the particular bulbs involved. As one
group finishes blooming, the next group
starts blooming. Bulbs become available
when it is time for them to be planted, and
generally remain available long enough for
a few phases to get added later when convenient, although there is always the threat
of particular varieties getting sold out later in the season.
Phasing is only effective in the first sea-

son, since bulbs get established after their
first bloom cycle, and will subsequently be
on the same schedule as all their friends of
the same variety. Bearded iris, calla,
anemone and rananculus are not conducive to phasing, but instead bloom at a
particular time, regardless of when they
were planted.
Narcissus, daffodil, grape hyacinth, bearded iris and classic white callas are the
most reliable of spring bulbs, and the most
likely to naturalize, although bearded iris
and callas will probably bloom quite late in
their first year. Crocus, freesia and harlequin

rananculus, hyacinth, lily, tulip and the

not as reliable after their first year because

worried about the fact of missing something so important, in all reality its never

We are a culture so disconnected from
one another we do not even realize it. I
recently encountered a person so lazy
they chose to use their cell phone to communicate with someone who was just a
mere distance from them instead of taking a flight of stairs to get the answer they
needed. The odd reality is we use technology as a way of not having to communicate with people. The next time you find
yourself in a huge crowd of people take a
look around, see how many people are
using cell phones, tablets or music devices; more than likely it’ll be 99% of the
people.
Now close your eyes for a moment and
imagine all of those gadgets gone; we
would be forced as a nation to interact
with the people around us. We could have
meaningful conversations about something important without being distracted.
The funny thing is we use technology as a

Truth be told, it would make me happy
to have no Internet access for 1 day; that
means no stress or worries about missing
something when nothing is happening to
begin with. The Internet consumes so
much time of the everyday person’s life
it’s unbearable. Some spend hours on end
just surfing the net; with no end in sight.
Others spend entire days on Twitter and
Facebook communicating back and forth
with people instead of just picking up the
phone and calling them. Who cares that

HOLLYWOOD—It was two years ago this
month that Instagram was launched. The free
photo-sharing social network is phenomenal,
especially if you love to take photos, then Instagram is for you. Instagram has an estimated 100 million users. On April 12,2012,
Facebook acquired Instagram for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock. Instagram is similar to Twitter, however Twitter
still remains more popular. Twitter is somewhat difficult to comprehend for some, yet
simple to master. People still fell reluctant
to sign up for an account in the Twitter universe due to stalkers, especially if you're apart
of the entertainment industry. We all know
how uncomfortable it feels when people begin acting creepy; you should be extremely
careful. Then of course, you have the Twitter-fearing friends that just don't get it at all.
It's all about communicating with family,
friends and co-workers by sending quick messages in 140 characters or less. You'll see messages from celebrities to mere mortals venting out their frustrations. You might even be
lucky enough to have followers. One thing

“TAKEN 2” IS A THRILLING ADRENALINE RUSH
HOLLYWOOD—Back in 2008, the action
thriller “Taken” starring Liam Neeson took
audiences by surprise. It was clever, tense and
brought to light for some audiences the big
business of sex trafficking. Four years later, we now have the sequel to that picture
“Taken 2.”
Neeson reprises his role as retired CIA operative Bryan Mills who is on a trip to Istanbul when he receives a surprise visit from
his daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) and ex-wife
Lenore (Famke Jansen). Things are going
well in the beginning until Bryan realizes that
he has a bounty out on him from Murad Hoxha (Rade Serbedzija); the head of the Albanian
By LaDale Anderson
Mafia whose son was killed by Mills.
The picture does indeed follow the same
formula as its predecessor, as it becomes a cat
and mouse game for Mills to rescue his exwife who has been kidnapped. His daughter
Kim is also on the run from ruthless suitors
who are looking to make Mills pay for his actions. Neeson was born to play this role and
it works so well because he does not come
across as super human; he’s the guy next
door, he just has extraordinary skills that
might surprise most people.
The film works because it presents a simple idea. How far would you go to protect the
people that you love? In Mills’ case, he’s will-

ing to be sacrificed, tortured and travel
miles to ensure the safe return of his loved
ones. I also found it fascinating to watch
Grace immerse herself in a more physical performance this time around. In the first film,
she was the helpless woman waiting to be rescued. This time around, she’s fighting bad
guys and assisting her father in locating her
mother.
Another important aspect of the picture is
the relationship between Kim, Lenore and
Bryan. At one point they were a happy family, but that happiness was shattered by Mills’
job. Even though he and Lenore are no
longer married, the audience has the sense
that they long to be back together; to have
that family unit. “Taken 2” is an action picture from start to finish. There are loads of
gunfire, explosions, chase scenes (involving
cars and people) and unbelievable fight se-
quences that I have yet to see in any other
picture besides this franchise. The beatings
that Bryan Mills enacts on his captors are vicious; the scary part is most of the time he’s
not even using a gun.
At moments, some of the dialogue in the
picture is not as authentic as one would expect it to be. It could have been a bit sharper or more polished in the script, but the storytelling aspect makes up for it. Does the picture present something new to the audience?
Not really, but it’s entertaining to watch
which is key. “Taken 2” without a doubt is
one the most exciting action flicks that I’ve
seen this year and further reiterates that Liam
Neeson is the new action hero. You don’t always have to be super athletic to be a hero;
Neeson proves that the mind is just as powerful.

“REVENGE” RETU RNS F OR MORE DEC EPTI ON
HOLLYWOOD—“Revenge” was absolutely
one of the best new dramas on television
last season. With its jaw-dropping pilot, to
its unbelievable finale, audiences could not
get enough of the series. When we last left
off, Amanda Clarke had returned to town
pregnant with Jack’s (Nick Wechsler) baby,
Emily (Emily VanCamp) and Nolan
(Gabriel Mann) faced off with the White
Haired Man, Daniel (Josh Bowman)
hooked up with Ashley (Ashley Madekwe),
Charlotte (Christa B. Allen) overdosed on
pills, and the queen of all evil, Victoria
Grayson (Madeleine Stowe), was presumed
dead in a plane explosion. That’s not even
the best part; season one wrapped with
Emily discovering that her presumed dead
mother is still alive.
Episode 1 of season two, cleverly titled
“Destiny,” picks up one year after last season. With so much being jammed pack in
the episode, I found it important to decipher only the clues the audience will need
to know. The audience sees several images
of divers searching for survivors from what
appears to be a boat explosion. A gold time
clock chain and a male’s body is also seen,
though who that person is remains the
mystery. This appears to set-up where season 2 will be heading. An important clue
for the audience to be aware of is that all of
this takes place over the Labor Day weekend.
We then rewind to three months back,
where Emily Throne is seen tied to a
wooden post as waves of water pummel
her body. It’s later revealed she is in training to attempt to drum up memories

about her mother. With a touch of magic,
it's Memorial Day weekend in the Hamptons. Jack and Declan (Connor Paolo) are
at odds over pregnant Amanda. Jack appears to be in a depressed state of mind,
which makes me think he has Emily on
the brain. Charlotte has been in rehab for
her pill addiction, and is thrilled about her
mother’s memorial taking place. She invites Emily to the event, who has been
checking in on her little sister during her
stint in rehab.
Emily has business to take care of, so she

“ BREAK ING A MI SH ” MY NEW OBSESSION
By LaDale Anderson
HOLLYWOOD—TLC has a new reality
series that has instantly hooked me with
its premise. “Breaking Amish” is both
riveting, but also controversial as it tackles the lives of five Amish people that
choose to leave home to journey to New
York City. The series follows Abe, Jeremiah, Kate, Rebecca and Sabrina as they
navigate their newfound independence
in a culture and environment that is foreign to them.
What immediately captured my attention about the show was the idea of
being able to get a piece of the Amish
lifestyle; how they interact with people,
what their society is like and addressing
many rumors that the public have about
the Amish community. It’s important to
note that Abe, Jeremiah, Kate and Rebecca are all Amish, whereas Sabrina is
a Mennonite. She is apart of the Amish
community, yet it’s a different sub-culture. It’s quite interesting to see her interaction amongst the group with the
people in New York; in a strange sense
she’s a bit more open some would say.
Based on what has been depicted on
the show up to this point, I would argue
that Abe and Rebecca do appear as
Amish exploring a foreign environment,
while Jeremiah, Sabrina and Rebecca at
some point have ventured from their
staple grounds. The audience is well
aware that Kate has spent time in
Florida and was arrested for a DUI. The
fact that her parents have no idea about
that I find hard to believe. She also
comes across a bit kooky on the series;
as if she has alternate personalities. Jeremiah takes his newfound freedom without any regrets; getting tattoos, visiting
strip clubs and using bad language.
The audience is well aware of the obvious sparks between Abe and Rebecca
from the first episode of the series. Its
like these two are destined to be together, but it was troubling to watch the
recent episode where Rebecca revealed a
dark secret about her past and the fact
that she has no teeth. To see her smile
with so much confidence was a remarkable moment on the TV screen.
What attracts audiences is the fact that
there is nothing like this on television
right now. People have always had their
thoughts about the Amish community,
whether they use electricity, the children being able to stop going to school
at the 8th grade and other stereotypes.
There lies an intrigue in the show that
makes the viewer want to know more. To
be honest to see cameras just navigate
around an Amish community would
draw in viewers, but to see people taken
from that environment and placed
somewhere else is just as interesting.
I do still have my skepticisms about
the series because for cameras to be able
to invade the Amish community without
being seen I find difficult to grasp, yet
some of the images presented to the
camera acknowledge the idea that the
Amish community is not happy with
what is being depicted. You also have
the fact that some of the cast members
come across as very good actors, some
appear to have had multiple encounters
with the “outside world” from their
communities. This is not to say the
Amish do not travel because they do indeed.
Recently reports have surfaced that
the show is a fake with claims that Jeremiah has children, Abe and Rebecca are
already married and have a child and
many others which TLC has acknowledged will be addressed in future
episodes. With all that controversy I just
believe it makes the viewer want to
watch more to see how things will unfold. When something appears on TV
that is not commonly seen, it’s so alluring. Its like MTV’s “ Jersey Shore;” It
came out of nowhere in 2009 and became a phenomenon over night, the
same thing is happening with “Breaking
Amish.”
For those who have not checked out
the series “Breaking Amish” airs Sundays at 10pm on TLC.

CELEBRATION THEATER PERFORM THEATRICAL MAGIC
By Michael St. John
HELLO AMERICA! Because I will always have a passion for the theatre, it
is very special when I hear that a new
playwright and his or her play is actually being produced. The Celebration Theater is doing just that as a
workshop production. The curtains
will go up on Steve Harper’s play, October 30, November 6, 13,20 at 8 p.m.
Being featured in the cast are: Ira
Gold, Christina Marie Moses, Jason
Turner, Charls Hall, Sabina Zuniga
Varela, Laura Parker
The play features Grayson, an unemployed attorney, who struggles
against an overwhelming depression
due to the death of her father, and the
fact that her brother is in a coma.
Even her girlfriend Angie and therapy don’t seem to be providing the
cure. She sees her father everywhere
and talks to her comatose brother
(and he talks back) constructing a history of her family that has elements
of myth and reality in an unsuccessful effort to break out of her mood. After running into Sheri –her ex from
Law School - now married and
straight, Grayson decides to pursue
Sheri in the hopes of getting a kiss she
knows will magically make things
right. In this comedy/drama about
family, power, slavery and freedom,
Grayson negotiates love, mysticism,
and history in pursuit of her own
mental health.
Playwright Steve Harper’s work
has been seen at The Falcon Theatre,
Tribeca Theatre Festival, Chicago’s
American Theatre Company, and The
American Airlines Theatre. He’s a
graduate of the Juilliard playwriting
program and writes for the TV show
Covert Affairs.
L.A. Weekly and Broadway World
