MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The More Things Change…
This past year has seen quite a number of changes to the Victoria Epilepsy and
Parkinson’s Centre. We have witnessed staff changes, board changes, and a
very large change in how we identify ourselves as an organization.
To begin, I would like to give my sincerest thanks to Catriona Johnson for her
years of dedication to the VEPC as Executive Director. Catriona has guided the VEPC with a steady hand
through some very difficult times, and we truly appreciate all of her efforts. On behalf of the board, the
staff, and the membership, I wish her all the best in her future endeavours. At the same time, I am
pleased to welcome Barbara Gilmore to the role of Executive Director. Barb comes to us most recently
from the land “Down Under”, and has had many years of experience in the non-profit sector, including
previous involvement with the London Health Sciences Centre - Epilepsy Clinic. In the short time that
Barb has been with us, she has proved to be an enthusiastic leader.
This year marks the departure of Dr. Alex Moll from the Board of Directors. Dr. Moll has been a
member of the Board — including a Past-President — from almost the inception of the VEPC, and his
contributions, institutional knowledge, and steady guiding hand will be sorely missed. Thankfully, he
has offered to be there as an ear for the Board if we ever need a little insight. We are also giving a fond
farewell to Harvey Lazar who is off to Vancouver. Harvey has been on our Board for a number of years,
and has served on the executive committee, first filling in as interim treasurer, and then as Board
Secretary. Harvey brought a unique perspective to the board, and we wish him well. With departures, also
come new welcomes! We are losing one Alex and gaining a new Alex — Dr. Alex Henri-Bhargava is a
neurologist who has recently moved to Victoria, and we welcome having his expertise on the Board. We
also welcome Suzanne Dwillies, a local pharmacist, to the Board.
Despite all these changes, the VEPC has had another successful year, and we continue to grow. We held
a successful “Walk in the Park for Parkinson’s” last September, and had another great Purple Day Plane
Pull in March. Of course, we also have our annual Golf Tournament sponsored by Peninsula Co-op
coming up in just a couple of weeks.
I would be remiss in not mentioning our most exciting change. Following on the success of our various
fund raising efforts over the past couple of years and our increased media exposure, it was decided to
embark on a rebranding of the VEPC to reach further into the community and breath new life into our
organization. After nearly a year’s worth of work, we are pleased to announce that the Victoria Epilepsy
and Parkinson’s Centre will now be known as HeadWay. We feel that this rebranding sends a positive
message, and captures the essence of the organization — we exist to assist individuals in making headway
in the management of their condition.
With Best Regards,
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S
MESSAGE
As I look at what was happening at the Victoria
Epilepsy & Parkinson’s Centre last year until I joined
as executive director in January 2013, I am impressed
with the action and outcomes at both the Board of
Directors level and the program and service delivery
level. Thanks to Catriona Johnson for efforts that
continue to guide and make a positive impact.
The Board initiative of rebranding and confirming
‘HeadWay’ as a new identity for the agency is
refreshing and promotes a new enthusiasm for the
Centre’s role in the community. After 27 years of one
organization successfully managing, growing and
delivering services of two neurological programs,
there really has been headway made toward
understanding the conditions of epilepsy and
Parkinson’s’ and building supportive , caring and
knowledgeable relationships with clients, our
community, our clinicians and professionals, and our
members and supporters.
‘HeadWay’ is both an action and
an outcome as we provide
support
care
knowledge
through program and service
delivery, relationships and
information sharing at the Victoria
Epilepsy and Parkinson’s Centre .
We work together achieving
‘HeadWay’ to live a life of wellness
with conditions such as epilepsy and
Parkinson’s.
The continuous outreach programs for seniors; support
groups; workshops for caregivers; tutoring classes for
children; advocacy consultations and letters for adults
with epilepsy or Parkinson’s; and planning public
awareness and learning activities, are just a part of
each week for the staff at the Centre. It is amazing
what gets fit into part-time hours. Thanks to Della,
Maureen, Lindsay, Jennifer, Lissa, and now Sandra.
There are volunteers and members that make such a
difference ; the essence of non-profit Societies.
Thank you.
In addition to donors, United Way, the
Vandekerkhove Family Foundation , VIHA and BC
Gaming, awareness and fundraising events have also
supported the Centre. The Peninsula Co-op Charity
Golf Classic is in the 21st year; the plane pull is ‘just
getting off the ground’, and there has been the fun
Walks for Parkinson’s. I am looking forward to a
year of growth and recognition as a place to connect to
and make headway toward a rewarding life.
Barb Gilmore
Facts about Epilepsy The word ‘epilepsy is a general term for more than 20 different types of seizure
disorders. Seizures occur as a result of brief changes in the normal activity of brain cells. The extent of
these changes, and their effect on the individual, can vary greatly. Epilepsy affects approximately 1 in
every 100 Canadians, and begins most often in childhood or the senior years.
Facts about Parkinson’s Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disorder resulting from the loss of
dopamine production in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra. Dopamine acts as a chemical
messenger, allowing nerve impulses to travel smoothly from one nerve cell to another. This enables the
transmission of messages to muscles of the body to begin voluntary movement. As dopamine production
decreases, muscle movements become slower and more rigid, tremors can develop and reflexes become
more impaired, contributing to a loss of balance. Although most commonly diagnosed in seniors,
Parkinson’s can occur in early to mid- adulthood as well and is known as early onset Parkinson’s.

Epilepsy Support Care Knowledge
During 2012, the Epilepsy program and services were delivered by both Jennifer Morgan and Lindsay
Beal, while Jennifer was on maternity leave. Individual and family consultations/ visits and liaising with
clinicians and other professionals make up a large part of the direct services provided. There were 76
new epilepsy client consultations and 96 new professional epilepsy contacts. Email, mail and phone
consultations almost doubled from the year before to170 consultations.
Encounters Under 30 brought together 6 young adults with epilepsy. Though they have friends and
family who understand and support them, none had met others of a similar age who also had epilepsy.
The Epilepsy Advisory committee embarked on an awareness campaign for Purple Day 2012. Over 75
business packages were distributed; a delegation of 12 people met and attended BC Legislature to hear the
Minister of Health declare awareness and support for epilepsy and Purple Day.
For children the Tools for Success tutoring program continued with 33 classes and 10 students thanks to a
TELUS grant and the partnership with CORE, University of Victoria. A grant from Times Colonist Raise
a Reader assisted the Tools for Success program with funds sufficient to purchase an iPad mini and
applications. Jennifer is discussing the Tools for Success program by poster presentation at the
International Epilepsy Congress in Montreal June 2013. The Music Therapy program, in partnership with
the Victoria Conservatory of Music with funding from CFAX, continued into October, totally 25 classes.
A new Music for YouthWorks program started development thanks to a Sara Spencer Foundation. 50
school children received epilepsy awareness activities through our education program.
Purple Day Plane Pull 2013 was once again a huge epilepsy awareness event. Thanks to the many
participants, efforts and enthusiasm to raise funds and awareness. BIG thanks to Stelly’s Secondary
school for their Stelly’s Palooza support of Purple Day and epilepsy.

Parkinson’s
Support Care Knowledge
During 2012 the Parkinson’s program coordinator, Maureen Matthew provided over 600 individual
consultation sessions with individuals and family members in person, over the phone and by e‐mail.
This valued service continues to draw a lot of interest and we are grateful to both learn together and serve
over 500 local families living with Parkinson’s. There were 32 monthly support group meetings in
Victoria, Sidney and the West Shore for individuals with Parkinson’s and their family members.
19 workshops were held for people affected by Parkinson including Caregiver workshops which
connected more than 375 people. Mental health information and support has been the focus and we are
able to successfully link clients in need of mental health services with Vancouver Island Health Authority
(VIHA) mental health services.
The outreach program coordinator, Lindsay Beal was able to reach over twice as many people in the
second year of program; 665 consultations. The volunteer team is a strong core of Parkinson’s Outreach
and assists to serve others through group facilitation, exercise support and professional rehabilitation
skills. Partnerships flourished between Victoria Epilepsy and Parkinson’s Centre and VIHA with the
Seniors Outpatient Clinic – Falls Prevention Clinic. 173 exercise classes were co-ordinated by the
Parkinson’s outreach coordinator with 66 participants.
The Parkinson’s conference in April 2012 brought professionals, members and community together for an
outstanding information and connection conference. Thank you to Teva Canada for support and
assistance.
The advisory committee is currently being re-structured toward increasing the ways this special group can
advise the program about Parkinson’s service needs and agency growth. It continues to meet to discuss
the overall awareness of Parkinson’s, including the Parkinson’s Walk in September and the Parkinson’s
program in general.
Chronic Disease Self Management workshops were new to both epilepsy and Parkinson’s programs and
delivered by volunteers and staff specifically trained in the 6 week program.. This program is part of
University of Victoria’s Department of Aging and will be delivered again in 2013-14.
