Last year we improved the Ride Guide with a fresh design and additional editorial content. This year we have improved the paper stock and added color printing through out. As demand for advertising increases, next year we hope be able to add even more stories, ride suggestions, and even maps and queue sheets. By now, most everyone knows that Wisconsin is the center of the bicycle industry in the US. More bicycles are made in Wisconsin than all the other states combined. While Trek is the most well known of our industry leaders, we can be proud in the many other Wisconsin companies, large and small, that employ thousands of workers and produce great cycling products. From saddles to polo mallets, our feature stories in this issue highlight some lesser-known members of our state’s bicycle industry. Look for them the next time you are making a purchase at your local bike shop. Period. That is a pretty bold statement from a small leather manufacturer in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, but there was a time when you could make a similarly bold pronouncement about virtually any product you could think of. Wisconsin was a worldwide leader in manufacturing everything from accordions to automobiles, blenders to bubblers, tractors to tools, and more. Many of those companies and Wisconsin-made products have disappeared, but we can still proudly lay claim to the title: The national capital for the bicycle industry. 10 2013 Ride Guide Selle Anatomica Titanico leather saddles are hand-made by skilled craftspeople at Monarch-McLaren, Ltd., a company in Elkhorn, WI. Unlike plastic, leather is a natural product with myriad inherent variations, and with more than 70 years in the leather manufacturing industry, Monarch is the only company left in North America with the institutional knowledge needed to make leather bicycle saddles. They now produce more than 8,000 of their uniquely comfortable Watershed and Trueleather Titanico saddles every year. The folks at Selle Anatomica are so confident you will love their saddles, that they guarantee it. If you’re not happy with your saddle, you’re welcome to return it within 30 days of your purchase and the company will refund your purchase price (minus shipping fees). Wheelsmith pumps out 2.5 million spokes from their factory on Milwaukee’s northwest side. For 28 years, Wheelsmith has been producing the best spokes, nipples and other wheel products in the world, right here in the USA. They even bought out a spoke company in Asia and moved their equipment and production to the 414! The Planet Bike Superflash Turbo ups the ante on their benchmark blinkie with twice the power. The 1 Watt LED and 2 additional red LEDs with a new attention grabbing pattern are visible at up to one mile, even in daylight!
