The roman side
of Germany
History’s bites
Trier, which stands on the Moselle
river, was a Roman colony
from the 1st century A.D. and then
a great trading centre in the
following century.
It became one of the capitals
of the Tetrarchy at the end
of the 3rd century, when it was
known as the 'second Rome'.
The number and quality
of the surviving monuments are
an outstanding testimony
to Roman civilization.
Porta Nigra
Porta Nigra, an ancient defensive
structure.
It is today the largest Roman city gate
north of the Alps.
It has been designated a World Heritage
Site.
The name Porta Nigra originated in the
Middle Ages due to the darkened colour
of its stone.
Aula Palatina
It was not a free standing building
originally but had other smaller
buildings attached to it, such as a
forehall, an entrance vestibule
and some service buildings.
The Aula Palatina was equipped
with a floor and wall heating system.
Saint Peter
Dom
Imperial baths:
The Imperial Baths consist of two parts:
the real baths (thermae) and a field on
which people could
perform athletic exercises (palaestra).
The latter measures 160 x 130 metres.
Saint Peter Dom houses an impressive
collection of artworks,
architecture and holy relics.
It is also the oldest church
in Germany.
Today, it is an important Catholic shrine
that still receives pilgrims. Construction
began in 326 AD, to
celebrate the 20th.
anniversary of his
reign.
