Under GDKE’s management are fortresses, castles, antiques and the three outstanding national museums in Koblenz, Mainz and Trier, as well as the national monument protection and archaeology departments. Nestled in a scenic and partly legendary landscape that forms a unique part of European history, Rhineland-Palatinate is a destination for the whole family. No less than four UNESCO world heritage sites can be found here, among them the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Roman Monuments, Cathedral and Liebfrauenkirche in Trier, the Upper German-Raetian Limes and the Cathedral of Speyer. GDKE’s many exhibitions, events and educational offers bring history to life. The main focus of these efforts is always on making all interested people including the many visitors from all over the world experience the state’s great cultural heritage, directly and first hand. With this objective in mind we constantly advance our visitor concepts – for example by using digital presentation techniques or audio-visual guides. We also place special attention on barrier-free access. On the following pages we gathered lots of useful information and many tips. Enjoy the discovery tour through RhinelandPalatinate’s cultural treasures! In the Middle Ages the region was one of the most important areas of the Empire. Today you can experience how kings, counts and knights used to live and fought for power and wealth on Trifels Castle, the Dahner Castles or the Hardenburg Castle and Fortress ruins. 40 PALATINATE – THE CASTLE REGION ALTENBAUMBURG CASTLE RUINS FROM STRATEGIC SPOT TO QUARRY Strategically, the situation at the exit of the Alsenztal was extremely favourable. However, from the time the Raugrafen line had died out in the 14th century, Altenbaumburg served merely as quarry. The impressive remains of the wall still allow to identify the castle’s former structure. Only the Palas was rebuilt. Built in the 12th Century by Frederick I (Barbarossa), one of Germany’s most famous Emperors, it grew into one of the Staufer dynasty’s largest fortified castles. The “last knight” Franz von Sickingen, once Lord of Nanstein, died in his castle after a violent siege. At the latest in the main showroom of the “archaeological window” you are right at the heart of history. Here you discover finds from Roman graves and prehistoric garbage, e. g. from settlements of the stone, bronze and iron ages. In the “Gläsernen Werkstatt” you can watch restorers at work. With great enthusiasm experts outline different approaches, show you the equipment of modern restoration and tell you exciting stories on how the objects were found or what they were used for. STATE ARCHAEOLOGY SPEYER Current archaeological results or special items, such as burial finds from the Roman era in Speyer and exciting topics like “aerial archaeology” are presented in the context of changing exhibitions, providing access to the Palatinate’s rich past to visitors. In the course of our investigations we therefore always encounter important cultural-historical finds, from prehistoric times, all the way to the recent past. We, the state archaeologists, document and secure these historic treasures. Particularly interesting insight into our work – usually scheduled at short notice – can be gained on occasion of our current excavation tours. Red container boxes on the area of the future archaeological centre in Mainz and in front of the State Parliament building will inform visitors about the planned excavations in 2015. Together with the Römisches Mainz initiative we will present the latest results in the showroom of the Isis and Mater Magna sanctuary. STATE ARCHAEOLOGY MAINZ The Roman inscriptions of the altars and architectural ashlars from the town wall excavation are among the focal points there.
