Message from Her Excellency, Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO
The Embroiderers’ Guild NSW Inc.
The initiative taken by The Embroiderers’ Guild NSW Inc. to re-develop their
building offers an exceptional opportunity to be part of establishing a centre of
excellence which will be the largest purpose-designed textile centre in Australia.
Indeed, The Embroiderers’ Guild have provided leadership and valuable
encouragement for continuing creativity for which Australian embroiderers have
been long renowned.
The proposed development will ensure that this creativity will continue to grow.
As Patron of the Embroiderers’ Guild NSW Inc. I am pleased to endorse this
forward thinking project and I invite you to support this capital campaign by
becoming a donor.
Professor Marie R Bashir AC CVO
Governor of New South Wales
“Our chief aim is the establishment of
EMBROIDERY AS A CREATIVE ART. We are
not a charitable society, but a strongly
cultural one; any good we do must arise
out of our willingness to share what we
know with all our fellow members, and
our ability to draw out the power of
producing beautiful, rich and
competent work.”
Margaret Oppen
Founding Chair 1962 B.E.M.1973

“The Guild is not only a resource and
learning centre for all interested in
embroidery, it is also a very important
social part of the life of many
members.”

Operated by volunteers, The Guild is an
important part of the ongoing future
and education of art, craft and design in
the embroidery and textile area within
NSW and Australia.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
The Guild is undertaking a major Capital Campaign
to expand our educational spaces and to remedy
the many problems we have in our more than one
hundred year old building. It will greatly improve
access and egress to all the facilities and overcome
concrete cancer and rising damp problems.
Wendy Schmid
BACKGROUND
The Guild was formed in 1957, to bring
together artists and embroiderers to share
and exhibit their work. It became the
Embroiderers’ Guild NSW in 1971, the first
Embroiderers’ Guild in Australia, and
through the passion of member volunteers
has developed into an organisation
providing comprehensive education
programs to adults and young people.
Educational programs are supported by an
extensive library, museum collection,
exhibition opportunities, tutor training and
administrative support. The support
received by members is of major
importance. The sharing of our cultural
heritage with tutors and friends is
invaluable. The high standard of tuition to
beginners and advanced stitchers is one of
the strengths of the organisation and
appreciated by all.
Since 1989, when members purchased a
permanent home, we have continued to
fulfil our aims and welcomed many new
members as beginners and more advanced
embroiderers. Tutors bring their unique
enthusiasm and skill to the education
program. We embrace the multicultural
aspects of embroidery and absorb
international influences as they grow in
Australia.
Our vision is to be a world class Centre of
Excellence for Embroidery.
Unfortunately, our premises do not meet
current and future needs of the
organisation or its members.
We are perfectly located for access from all areas
of NSW. As part of the welcoming village of Concord
West we have access to accommodation, public
transport and all necessary facilities.
The redeveloped building will enable us to continue
the cultural legacy we have benefited from and to
introduce the next generation to their heritage.
YOUR CONTRIBUTION
All contributions will be directed to re-developing
our building. To this end, purpose designed plans
have been drawn up by award winning architects,
Neeson Murcutt Architects.
The PUBLIC LEVEL with GALLERY, and SHOP at
street level will enable us to hold public
exhibitions of contemporary and historic
embroidery, weaving, textile art, sculpture,
photography and mixed media to inspire and
educate the members and the community.
The RESEARCH LEVEL will enable members and
scholars to further their studies in the techniques
and history of textile decoration. The extensive
COLLECTION contains examples of historic
embroidered textiles dating from the C17th as
well as contemporary work by nationally and
internationally recognised textile artists, with an
emphasis on Australian designs. The specialist
LIBRARY with over 5,000 books, magazines, study
folios, videos and DVD’s supports all members
with study facilities and a postal service.
The EDUCATION LEVEL will contain a flexible
arrangement of lecture and meeting rooms,
workshops with display spaces, wet and dry areas
and lunch room.
This level will provide facilities for learning the
skills and techniques of embroidery and design to
a very high standard.

CALL to ACTION

OUR BUILDING
The building was purchased in 1989,
modified to suit the education, storage
and administrative needs of our
organisation and has undergone
numerous repairs. After a number of
renovations, maintenance issues and
accessibility problems, it has become
clear the building no longer fulfils our
needs.
Our building will become the largest
purpose designed centre for study and
research of embroidery and textiles in
Australia. It will provide facilities for
exhibitions, education, research and the
all important socialising and sharing of
skills and cultural heritage.
It will provide a much needed Arts
facility in the community and be an
important part of the village of Concord
West with its lively cafes, bars and
restaurants and is centrally located near
the heart of Sydney.
This project became possible by the
extraordinarily generous donation of $500,000 by
the Leverton Family in memory of Laura Leverton
and her mother Christina Barton. As long time
members and Laura’s time as an accredited Guild
tutor, they understood the need for a purpose
designed Gallery to exhibit pieces from the
Collection, the work of members and work by
community textile and embroidery artists.
Guild Groups and individual members have
donated funds and are working on other activities
to reach our goal.
Our target is $1.5 million.
Through your donation, we invite you to support
this purpose designed permanent home for future
generations to share our cultural heritage.

WHY EMBROIDERY?
Australian Embroidery has its own history,
interwoven with the traditions and cultures
of migrants, and plays a key role in bringing
our rich multicultural society together.
OUR MEMBERS
The Embroiderers’ Guild NSW Inc is
member based and operated. Currently a
1,400 strong membership is spread across
63 regional and city groups within NSW,
with ages ranging from 5 to over 90 years.
Our groups service country and city
locations convenient to members.
“Embroiderers’ Guilds are among the few
institutions in Australia that actively collect and
preserve embroideries. Our collection is an
historical resource and it provides a wealth of
inspiration for those who take advantage of its
riches. It is also a legacy for the embroiderers of
the future.”
Dr Sue Wood
School of Communication and Creative Industries
Charles Sturt University
Special interest groups meet at the Guild in
Concord West and in other locations for
specific design and technique studies which
provide members with the opportunity to
explore the many facets of embroidery.
Members access workshops, courses,
exhibitions, the Collection and the library
seven days a week at Concord West and
there is an annual two-week education
Summer School Program.
The Young Textile and Fibre Group caters
for and encourages our younger members
aged 5 to 18 years who meet for workshops
at Concord West and other locations
throughout NSW. The Distance Course
provides young members with a lesson,
fabric and threads pack sent through the
mail and a mentor.
