It set out to offer different types of educational experience, based on varying degrees of individual student abilities Schuldorf Bergstraße Schuldorf Bergstraße today with more than 2100 students in classes 1–13, is a comprehensive school with an all-day programme. It fosters close contacts with different institutions, universities and clubs. The school has a distinct, officially accepted role as · European School · International School · Ecological School · Family- Friendly School · Sports Centre School Schuldorf Bergstraße is situated on the town boundary of Seeheim-Jugenheim. The spacious, park-like campus with its open-air theatre is surrounded by pine trees. Because of its unique architecture, parts of the buildings are classified as historical monuments. 3 International Education Schuldorf Bergstraße does not only offer the first State International School Branch in Germany but also hosts the private International Preschool and Kindergarten which is administered by the Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg. Together these institutions have provided a new landscape for international education! Thanks to this, in 2007 the Schuldorf was presented with an award as ’One of 365 Sites in Germany – the Land of Ideas’, in which the ingenuity, innovative capacity and relevance for the future of the country are recognized. We are reaching for the stars and striving for excellence The International Kindergarten/Preschool We provide an international bilingual early years setting that celebrates the multitude of cultures and languages represented in our learning community. The Preschool’s Mission Our mission is to help all children reach their full potential in a happy, safe and caring school. We seek to provide a holistic early years education in which children can develop the skills and attitudes to become enthusiastic and inquisitive learners in both English and German. The Whole child 4 • Preschool children are friendly and curious about their environment; • They have lived all over the world; • They come from various national and cultural back grounds; • They range in age from 3 to 6. The Curriculum We have created a unique bilingual program based on the Early Years aspect of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stages. This encompasses plenty of time to play and explore. We have adapted the areas of learning to the diverse and bilingual needs of our children. 1. Independence and Interdependence – this includes personal, social and emotional development of a child. 2. Communication, Language and Literacy – this includes language (English and German) competency as well as all aspects of creative expression and music. 3. Exploring and Number work – this includes learning about numbers and understanding the world all around. 4. Healthy Living – this includes physical development, sports as well as caring for oneself and others. 5 The Whole Community It takes a whole village to raise a child! Our Preschool has many cooperative working partnerships: • We are part of the Schuldorf Bergstrasse Community and work closely with the State International School Branch • We have an active Förderverein. • We work with the Elisabethenstift, the Alice Eleanore Schule in Darmstadt and The Helen Keller Berufsschule in Weinheim. • We are regular members of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS). • We are regular members of the Council of International Schools (CIS). • We are an open school and we have assemblies and international family celebrations. • We have an active Parent Representative Board. Admission and Fee • Children must be at least 3 years old and toilet trained. • We admit once a year in Aug/September. • The monthly fee is 700 1. This fee covers the full 10 hours of daily care. An additional fee of approximately 65 1 is charged for hot lunch. • Places in the Preschool are limited and the following admission criteria apply: – Bilingual children with one language being English; – International families who are here in Germany for a limited time; – German children who have previously attended an international facility; – German Children whose families are planning a stay abroad in the near future. Attendance at the International Preschool does not automatically guarantee admission to SISS. 6 Contact details see page 17 The State International School Branch Passport to the Future The State International School Branch (SISS) is part of Schuldorf Bergstraße, and therefore closely linked with the German branches of the school. SISS started in September 2005 with two Year One/Two classes. Up to Year Twelve a new grade is being added each consecutive year. Classes or year groups are staffed with a Classroom Teacher, Teaching Assistants and Specialist Teachers for different subjects. Our Mission Statement We regard ourselves as a community of people with different cultural and social backgrounds and opinions, with a broad variety of abilities and fields of interests. Mutual respect, tolerance, fairness and solidarity are the foundation of a humane and democratic society. These are the guidelines of communal life at our school. We want to create an atmosphere that encourages and supports academic progress and promotes social and personal skills to make our students self-confident, independent and responsible members of our society. We offer a broad and complex choice of educational opportunities and qualifications according to the individual achievement of our students. We expect our students to participate in decision-making within a community that specifically values ecological and multicultural ventures. 7 W CURRICULUM PRIMARY We follow the British National guidelines in conjunction with the Hesse Kerncurriculum for German. For Humanities subjects we offer the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) which is an integrated modular program that upholds the principles of global and ecological education. In Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Geography, Information Technology, and History the language of teaching is English. Furthermore, German mother tongue classes or German as additional language classes are taught in German from Flexible Lower Primary Year one. Music, Art, PE and RE are held either in English or in German, depending on the teacher’s nationality. In the Flexible Lower Primary the children are grouped for Maths, English, and German lessons according to their age/ learning year. In Year 3 and Year 4 the children remain in their home class for all lessons. Exceptions are German Additional Language classes for pupils with no or only little German knowledge. All Children are encouraged to participate in projects that support areas of the curriculum such as “Hut building” or “Tap into nature”. These extracurricular activities are offered after school from the Supervision team. 8 T CURRICULUM SECONDARY The theme- oriented approach in our curriculum is the key aspect in years 5-8. Many learning objectives are connected to a central theme, taught in an interdisciplinary setting. In Year 6 SISS students choose their second foreign language which is either Spanish, taught by teachers of the SISS, or French taught by German Grammar School teachers. But collaboration with the Schuldorf Grammar school branch and the Haupt- und Realschul Branch are not only to be seen here, but also within optional curricular modules across campus such as “Drama Club”, “Jugend forscht”, “Astronomy”, and other academic, creative and sports activities. Even joining the Schuldorf Big Band is possible as an extracurricular activity. In the early secondary years we are already developing IGCSE and IB learning processes that provide a basis for wider personal and academic development as risk takers, inquirers, principled and lifelong learners. In Year 9 and 10 the curriculum is structured according to IGCSE guidelines and our official accreditation as an IB (International Baccalauretate) diploma school ensures that we also offer Theory of Knowledge and Creative, action, Service (CAS) in Years 11 and 12. 9 Qualifications • After Year 10: The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), recognized by all federal states of Germany as a Mittlerer Abschluss. • After Year 12: The International Baccalaureate (IB), recognized by the Kultusministerkonferenz der Länder (KMK). School Life It needs more to educate a child than just academics! We are proud of our vivacious and dynamic international school community, with staff, students and parents from more than 30 nations. Apart from regular lessons and projects, assemblies, class trips and excursions are an essential, firmly anchored within our commitment to primary and secondary education. Our Year 3s traditionally spend three days in Erbach learning about the medieval age. In Year 6 a residential experience to explore the environment and ancient tribal lifestyle takes place, usually in the north of Hessen. The island of Sylt provides field work experience for further geographical and biological enquiry together with Hauptund Realschulzweig in Year 7. Year 8 traditionally visits Berlin where we have a historical and political focus and Year 10 celebrates their completion of IGCSEs on an excursion mostly outside Germany. Our school life is enriched by a variety of events and celebrations throughout the year in Primary and Secondary: Students, staff and parents contribute many hours of service to the school life, well beyond its borders, whether it is the “Halloween Spooctacular”, the traditional Lanternwalk, Diwali celebrations or the Christmas Play or Xmas -market. We also appreciate our International Festival , the annual Walkathon, book sales, cake sales, car boot sales, the “End of Primary Y4 play”, the tea time concert, or Sportsday and “Schulfest” ( together with other school branches of the Schuldorf). Be it a fundraiser for the school or for charities – our school is fortunate to have the benefits of a strong Parents Association, where it is proven that volunteering is an invaluable part of the school‘s community. Staff At SISS our staff is international. The teachers are paid by the State of Hesse, similar to all other state schools. As a special feature, each primary class has a Teaching Assistant (TA). TAs are employed by the Förderverein. Their salary is part of the monthly fee (mentioned above). Teaching Assistants in Secondary are attached to the different Subject areas and support students in Maths // Science // EAL // Humanities // GSL and Spanish. 10 Admission and Contact details see pages 16–17 SISS Supervision – a space for living and learning Supervision is an essential part of an all-day-school, discovering the potential of children and teenagers and supporting the development of their strengths and competences. The concept is to compliment the family, providing structure for the day, helping to reconcile family and career. It also offers diverse opportunities for contact and experience with other children within the school community. A specialist pedagogical team works with colleagues to provide daily care for students of the Primary and Secondary branches. Some of the responsibilities of Supervision as whole-day -care include: providing space and time for relaxation, social interaction, building of friendships, self- determined play and action. Reflection and preparation outside teaching sessions serves the general purpose of easing the pressure from our children and youth. There is regular exchange of views between the supervision team and teaching staff. One of the far reaching goals is to establish a connection between specific lesson objectives and projects in Supervision (e.g. encouraging the “Green Classroom” concept). Besides free play and open groups (e.g. break time activities in the Secondary branch), Supervision offers a multitude of clubs and activities. The students can choose from activities in the areas of sport, relaxation, art, music, crafts and environment. The priorities are play, joy of creativity and free choice. Homework Clubs are also provided. Playgarden The Playgarden is an organic environment which offers the opportunity to design and develop an adventure playground whilst caring for nature. It is an area of land adjoining the school premises in which experiential and negotiated, hands-on projects occur. Through the building of huts and furniture, gardening, metal -work, cooking and exploration of nature, an appreciation of environmentally sustainable practice is encouraged. Education is our passport to the future and learning is our greatest opportunity for the future! In today’s era of globalization, the provision of educational institutions on an international level is an essential location consideration within a competitive Europe, aimed at attracting companies and employers. This applies particularly to the south of the federal state of Hesse, which forms the geographical centre of the metropolitan regions and commercial powerhouses of Rhein-Main and Rhein-Neckar: A formidable pool in terms of internationally significant scientific and technological competence is concentrated here. A multitude of enterprises and organisations operating worldwide and also close cooperation between industry, universities and research institutions in and around the “Wissenschaftsstadt Darmstadt” (“Science City Darmstadt”) shape this region. The automation, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, IT and telecommunications, logistics as well as the aviation and space industry form a strong backbone of economic performance. The increasing international orientation of the region called for an international education programme! In 2001 the persuasive efforts of the initiator of the International Kindergarten and Preschool and the State International School project, the former Minister for Economic Affairs of the state of Hesse, Mr Klaus-Jürgen Hoffie, led to a resolution in the county council of the administrative area of Darmstadt- Dieburg: to establish an association, which in the initial stages, worked intensively on the clarification of the financial, local, organizational and personal requirements of the ambitious project of an international school, and was supposed to pave the way for its realization. 12 Shortly after the state-registered Förderverein of the State International School Branch and Preschool e.V. was founded and registered. In 2003 the local county of Darmstadt-Dieburg could open the doors of the International Preschool. In 2005 the Primary School and in 2008 the Secondary School followed – all three in brand-new buildings, integrated within the Schuldorf Bergstrasse. A new sports hall for all branches of the Schuldorf is the completion of these efforts. Today the Förderverein is eager to help where the financial resources of the Land Hessen are limited. This includes, for example, relocation support for new teachers, training activities for teachers, membership fees of international organization such as CIS or ECIS, library facilities, learning material for IGCSE and IB, sports equipment or musical instruments. The association also administers the after-school supervision and maintains close contact with decision-makers in the school as well as in the political domain.
