A FEW GOOD REASONS TO VISIT
COOK FOREST STATE PARK (PART 2 OF 2)
When you have family or friends visit from out-of-town,
what are your favorite places to take them, so they can
truly experience Western PA? For our guests who prefer to remain close-by, Lawrence County offers the scenic countryside of our Amish neighbors and the natural
beauty of McConnells Mill State Park. Pittsburgh is an
easy drive and our standard stops include one of the city’s
famous inclines and the eclectic Strip District. For our
visitors who are outdoor-minded, we typically end up either at Pymatuning to see the carp at the spillway, out
on Presque Isle, or making our way up to Cook Forest
State Park, so they can see PA’s old growth forest. If you
are not familiar with Cook Forest and why this National
Natural Landmark is such a special place to visit at least
once in your lifetime, please allow me this opportunity to
share its unique allure.
BIG – Cook Forest State Park encompasses 8,500 acres
along the scenic Clarion River. Approximately 2,000 acres
are old growth forest that has never been harvested by
man. This is by far the largest virgin timberland in PA and
surprisingly, it is the largest in the United States east of
the Rocky Mountains. Growing unscathed, the enormous
eastern hemlocks, white pines, American beeches, oaks,
maples, black cherries, and cucumber magnolias grow
to staggering heights with many exceeding 150 feet. The
record white pine, named the “Longfellow Pine”, towers
at 183.6 feet tall and is a massive 11.1 feet in circumference at breast height (CBH).
OLD – John Cook first settled along the Clarion River at
the mouth of Tom’s Run in 1828 with his wife and 10 children. There, he and his descendants operated a sawmill
and other business ventures. Maybe, they were too busy
sawing lumber for other landowners. It could have been
the rugged topography was a disincentive to harvesting
their own timber; or possibly, they had the foresight to
realize all the old growth forest was rapidly disappearing just about everywhere else in PA. For one or more
reasons, Cook Forest with its 300+ year-old trees escaped
the lumberman’s saw and ax, and remains a bastion of
the original towering “Forest Cathedral”. Through the
cooperative efforts of several determined conservationminded individuals and organizations, and the PA state
government, the land was purchased from the Cook
Family in 1927 for a PA State Park to preserve this natural treasure for future generations. From Oct. 1933 to
Sep. 1935, a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp
operated at Cook Forest and these hard-working young
men built many of the structure and most of the trails we
enjoy today.
GOOD – Cook Forest State Park has 29 miles of wellmarked and well-maintained trails to take you amongst
its forest giants. There in the presence of the towering
white pines and eastern hemlocks (the official PA state
tree), you have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of flora and fauna. Besides hiking the “Forest Cathedral”, Cook Forest offers ample opportunities to canoe,
kayak, raft, tube, and swim in the Clarion River. Ample
camp sites, picnic tables, and rustic cabins are there for
you to enjoy. The park office offers information sheets
and maps, along with scheduled park ranger-led informative sessions and nature hikes. Cook Forest offers a good
time to individuals with a broad spectrum of outdoor interests and abilities.
NEEDED – Some folks refer to Cook Forest as the
“Black Forest” of PA, due to its dense evergreen canopy
restricting the sunlight reaching the ground. Cook Forest serves as a reminder of the very different forest the
European settlers encountered when they first inhabited
“Penn’s Woods”. In stark contrast, the millions of acres
of second growth forest across PA remind us how resilient the forest can be, if given the opportunity and time.
We need wild places like Cook Forest State Park to help
us remember our past and to experience the humbling
majesty of God’s creation first-hand for ourselves! God

So I did it, I went and got
myself a Smash Book. I got
one that is food themed. I am
a huge foodie so this was a
prefect start for me into the
world of Smash Book. It will
be great to include pictures
of food I make, recipes, receipts from any
awesome restaurants I eat at and more. So
below is a picture of what my kit came with.
I got a book, two sided pen (writing pen on
one side, glue stick on the other), 2 rolls of
Washi Tape, some little post-it notes, very
cute little envelopes, and a note pad. Now I
ordered mine online for $12 and there were
many different styles/themes to choose
from. This book is very cool because the
first page is a pocket. I can slide items in
there if I don’t have time to glue them in or I
can put bigger pages folded into the pocket.
The little envelopes are nice because I can
put smaller items in them like smashed pennies, confetti, or just about anything for safe
keeping. Once I get a page filled up or even
started for that matter I will show it off. My
first entry will probably be one of my cupcake recipes along with pictures for one of
the showers I’m throwing. I can’t wait to see
where this book goes.

Recipe by:
1/4 C. heavy whipping cream
Muffin Boots
1 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
salt and ground black pepper to taste
•Preheat oven to 3750. Grease a 9” square casserole
dish. Place steamer insert into saucepan and fill with
water just below the bottom of steamer. Bring water
to a boil. Add broccoli, cover, and steam until tender, 2 to 4 minutes. In large bowl, mix steamed broccoli, bread cubes, diced tomatoes, ham, and pepper
jack cheese together. In a separate bowl, beat eggs,
cream, garlic powder, salt, and pepper together; stir
into broccoli mixture. Pour mixture into prepared
casserole dish. Bake in preheated oven until eggs
are set in the middle, about 35 minutes. Allow to cool
3 to 5 minutes before cutting.
Dad’s Favorite Peanut Butter Fudge
Recipe by: his sister, Lois A.
2 C. granulated sugar
1/2 C. peanut butter
1/2 C. margarine or butter
2/3 C. canned or whole milk
•Melt margarine in 2 qt. saucepan. Remove from
heat and mix in sugar, then add milk. Bring to a boil
over medium heat, stirring constantly.
Boil to 2360 on a candy thermometer or for 4
minutes. Remove from heat and add peanut butter,
then beat for 1-2 minutes until thickened. Pour into
buttered 8”x8” pan and let cool. Cut into squares
and enjoy.

Columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. grew up with a father
he describes as physically present but emotionally
absent. In his first book on parenting, Pitts openly
chronicles his struggle to come to terms with his alcoholic father and the climate of fear he had created
in their home. Pitts challenges all men to resolve the
resentment toward their absent or abusive fathers
instead of passing it on to the next generation.
There’s a passage in Hebrews 12 that applies to all
Christians, but it has special relevance to dads. It
reads: “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness,
without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest
any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble,
and by this many become defiled” (vv.14-15).
Think of what could happen in our families if we
emptied our hearts of bitterness and made peaceful
relationships our goal! If we have been blessed with
a wise and loving father, we should be grateful and
follow his example. But if our father has failed us, we
must rely on God’s grace, resolve our anger toward
him, and strive to be the kind of dad we never had.
It won’t be easy, but with our heavenly Father as a
perfect example, we can learn to be good dads.
A faithful father leads by love
With tender firmness from above,
For he himself has learned from God
