President & CEO
Dear Friends,
Trust is a foundation of the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s work. It’s a
fundamental part of the commitment we make to our clients, our partners
and our supporters.
Food donors trust us to handle food safely and quickly to make sure
it gets to the people who need it most. Partner agencies trust us to
continually seek new ways to provide them with a variety of healthy food.
The community trusts us with their investment—that we will leverage their
donations and service to feed more people. And we, in turn, trust our
partners to meet the needs of clients with care and dignity.
We trust in the power of community partnerships to foster innovation and
change as we strive to find creative, strategic and fresh responses to the
changing face of hunger.
We work every day to maintain and strengthen this trust. People are
counting on us, and we are counting on them.
This foundation of trust gives us the ability to learn together. To try new
ideas, pilot new programs and think in new ways about how to feed
more people with healthy food when they are in crisis. I am pleased to
share this report that highlights the power of our trusting relationships,
innovative programs—and the transformation that occurs not only in our
work, but in the impact we have on the community.
We are continuing our legacy of transforming ideas to improve our
community and serve families, children and seniors who struggle to keep
food on the table, and we are so grateful for your support. Thank you for
your partnership and your trust.
In Appreciation,
Kyle Waide
President & CEO

Dreams Fulfilled A Story of Transformation
“It’s that little creek that eventually turns into a river that shapes
mountains.” That’s how Lanarion, a senior at Best Academy in Atlanta,
describes Create Your Dreams. The youth development program is an
Atlanta Community Food Bank partner agency that serves kids K-12 in
northwest Atlanta.
Lanarion, a senior at Best
Academy in Atlanta, has
attended Food Bank partner
agency Create Your Dreams
since 3rd grade. He’s pictured
with his mom, Estella, at the
program’s studio.
Students who attend Create Your Dreams are so inspired that 100%
who complete the program graduate from high school, and nearly
100% pursue post-secondary degrees. “Many of these kids are
coming from homes where they’re living with extreme challenges,” said
Executive Director Kim Dennis. “We’re here to give them the resources,
opportunities and relationships they need to reach their potential and
break the cycles of poverty.” One of those resources is food. “We provide
a healthy snack and dinner, and we get almost everything we serve from
the Food Bank,” said Kim.
Lanarion, 17, has attended Create Your Dreams since he was in the
3rd grade. His mom, Estella, says he became very articulate and more
aware of his surroundings after starting the program. Lanarion says it has
shaped his personality and sharpened his character. “I love it,” he said.
“It’s like a second family. It’s my life, my safe haven.”
After he graduates, Lanarion plans to attend Morehouse or Howard
University to pursue a double major in Criminal Justice and Psychology.
His mom couldn’t be more thrilled with the exposure and opportunities
her son has received through his connection to the program. She looks
forward to the day her two-year-old daughter, Sari, can begin creating her
own dreams.
Lanarion and his family are just one success story. There are thousands
more thanks to a variety of youth programs partnering with the Food Bank
to provide nourishment for the body, mind and soul.

Empowering Hunger’s
First Responders
A Story of Trust
Staff and volunteers
at Southeast Gwinnett
Cooperative Ministry are
delighted with their new
walk-in freezer and cooler
purchased with a Capacity
Grant from the Food Bank.
To better reach more people in need, the Atlanta Community Food Bank
realizes we must invest in the strength of our partners on the front lines.
Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry is one of 64 partner agencies
selected to participate in the Food Bank’s Capacity Grant Program last
year. The grants enabled each agency to increase their capacity to serve
higher quality foods to more people in need. The Southeast Gwinnett
Co-op used the money to purchase a 293 square foot, walk-in freezer and
cooler to store perishable items like produce, dairy, eggs and meats.
Laura Drake is the executive director of the Co-op. “Our walk-in is stuffed
right now with hens, turkeys – everything our families are going to need
for the holidays,” said Laura, as her team was preparing for their 2015
Thanksgiving distribution. “We got 1,620 fresh eggs and 96 pounds of
butter yesterday. Without that walk-in, we wouldn’t have been able to get
these items because we wouldn’t have had a place to store them.”
The Co-op has a goal to provide healthier items for their clients, and the
new freezer and cooler space is making that goal a reality. “It’s such a
beautiful feeling to be able to show people ‘You’re important enough for
me to go the extra mile.’ Just because people can’t afford to buy healthier
items, it doesn’t mean they don’t want to provide them for their kids,” said
Laura. “The more dairy, meats and vegetables we can incorporate into
what we’re offering, the more we can open an avenue for our folks to have
a better outcome. We all want that for our families, don’t we?”

Celebrating A Legacy
A Story of Trust
As a champion for hunger and
poverty relief, Atlanta Community
Food Bank Founder Bill Bolling has
made an indelible mark, not only
on Atlanta, but the world.
Through the years, Bill used his
gifts of vision and collaboration
to work for positive change here
and abroad. Under his leadership,
the Food Bank became one of the
largest hunger relief charities in the
Southeast. As one of the founding
fathers of food banking, Bill was
instrumental in helping start
Feeding America food banks in the
U.S. and other food banks across
the globe.
Bill’s work for hunger relief and
sustainable food systems will
continue through the Georgia Food
Bank Association, the Food Well
Alliance, and other avenues here
and abroad.

trust and support I have received to

When Bill stepped down from his
role as the Food Bank’s executive
director this summer, the transition
was as seamless as any nonprofit
could hope for. As he passed
the torch to Kyle Waide, our new
president and CEO, we celebrated
Bill’s life and work.
friends along the way who have
made me a better person and a
better leader,” said Bill. “I’m deeply
grateful for the donors, volunteers,
foundations, businesses, schools,
advocates, families and friends
who help to make it all possible.
There is simply no way we can
accomplish what we do without
you.”
Kyle envisions a promising future
for the organization. “The Food
Bank has an incredible legacy of
service and impact, built over 36
years by our founder Bill Bolling,
in partnership with all of you,” said
Kyle. “Bill has worked tirelessly
and passionately to shape the
Food Bank into what it is today –
a beloved and trusted nonprofit
that exists to serve and lift up
those who face hunger in our
community.”

A Story of Transformation
Kids in Need Program

County School District.
When kids aren’t getting enough
healthy food to eat, it affects their
ability to succeed in school. The
Atlanta Community Food Bank
identified an opportunity to make
an impact through its Kids In Need
program.
As a major provider of school
supplies for teachers serving kids
in low-income communities, Kids
In Need has established strong
ties with many of the educators
it serves. In the 2013-14 school
year, Kids In Need worked with two
schools to pilot a school mobile
pantry initiative; Dunbar Elementary and Norton Park Elementary. In
the 2014-2015 academic year, the
program expanded to four schools,
adding M. Agnes Jones Elementary
and KIPP Atlanta Collegiate. Many
helping hands contribute to the
distributions; parent and community volunteers, school staff and
Food Bank staff.
Shirley, a parent volunteer at M.
Agnes Jones Elementary, has been
a regular volunteer at the mobile
pantry distributions at her grandchild’s school. “The food pantries
at our school not only helped my
family, but many families in the
community,” said Shirley.
Last year, a total of 2,385 food
boxes were distributed to families
participating in the school pantries,
providing enough food for 45,297
meals.The school mobile food
pantry program is a prime example
of a bold initiative that is not only
providing more food, but also transforming lives.
“The kindness that members of the
school community are able to shower upon one another in the form of
these boxes is as transformative
as the food that the children and
families are receiving,” said Kids In
Need Manager Barbara Overton.
“These children not only get the
food, but witness another example
of people in their communities supporting one another. We have yet
to fully realize the positive, lasting
effects this will have on them.”

With your support, the Atlanta Community Food
Bank served 657 nonprofit hunger-relief programs in
29 greater Atlanta and north Georgia communities.
Additionally, we work with seven other food banks in
Georgia through the Georgia Food Bank Association
and Feeding America. (Nine counties in northwest
Georgia receive food from both our Food Bank and the
Chattanooga Area Food Bank. All territory served by our
Food Bank is highlighted in blue and gray. An additional
five counties are served by the Georgia Mountain Food
Bank Association, indicated by a black outline.)
