On April 14, the Zoo celebrated its 62nd birthday at the Annual Birthday Bash with a record crowd in attendance. With mini celebrations and animal encounters scheduled throughout the day, as well as a headline birthday celebration, guests experienced the wonder and adventure found only at the Hattiesburg Zoo. Guests of the Birthday Bash were the first to experience the new Touch Africa Petting Zoo located in the Zoo’s African exhibit. Inside the Petting Zoo, guests are able to touch and feed some of the domesticated animals found on the African continent, such as Nigerian dwarf goats and African sheep. Also unveiled that day was a Mining Sluice sponsored (1) by Parris Jewelers, located in the recently reopened section of the Zoo allowing guests to make a full circle throughout the Zoo. With events for the entire family, the Saenger Theater will continue the tradition of providing the “Not Your Ordinary Night Out” with unforgettable onstage productions. Mississippi’s only multi-week, multi-genre arts festival, FestivalSouth, returned to Hattiesburg this summer for its third season. Offering both free and ticketed events to local residents and cultural tourists, FestivalSouth presented events that span the spectrum of the arts during its two-week festival. Music, dance, art and theatre productions hit the stages of Hattiesburg during June 9-23 with several events taking place at the Hattiesburg Saenger Theater in Downtown Hattiesburg. Missoula Children’s Theatre offers students a unique opportunity to gain theater experience through workshops and rehearsals, culminating with two public performances of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Hattiesburg Saenger Theater. An audition will be held for the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Historic Saenger Theater in Downtown Hattiesburg on July 9 at 10am. Approximately 50 roles are available for local students entering grades first through twelfth. The final production of Jack and the Beanstalk will be presented to the public on Saturday, July 14 at 11am and 1:30pm at the Historic Saenger Theater. Tickets for the production are $5 for adults and $3 for children and may be purchased at the door. Wrapping up the Summer Season at the Saenger will be the 63rd Mississippi Miss Hospitality Pageant July 2228. This year’s theme, “Hospitality Around the World,” guarantees authentic and unforgettable cultural entertainment. For a full week, 35 contestants from across the state will be in Hattiesburg for rehearsals, special events, interviews and competitions leading up to the crowning of Mississippi’s 2012 Miss Hospitality on July 28 at 8pm at the Saenger Theater. The young lady selected will represent Mississippi as the state’s goodwill ambassador, sharing hospitality with everyone she meets while promoting tourism, industry and economic development across the state.
