FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
‘70 Years of Crafting Community’—our theme for BAM ARTSfair 2016—sums up
the history of Bellevue Arts Museum pretty succinctly.
In 1947, a dedicated group of volunteers and local leaders implemented
an idea that brought together members of the community to celebrate the
creativity and originality of local artists. The original BAM ARTSfair, then the Pacific
Northwest Arts and Crafts Fair, eventually grew into Bellevue Arts Museum. Much
like the first Fair, the Museum has continued to celebrate the creativity and
originality of local artists, as well as makers from all around the world.
Our community has changed considerably in the past 70 years. From strawberry

fields to a world-class city; from a small town of closely knit neighbors, to the most
diverse and fast-growing area in the state—a lot has changed. But what remains
the same is the vision of those original ARTSfair volunteers to provide a unique and exceptional opportunity to have
of
a direct conversation with artists and makers.
BAM seeks to provide many opportunities to engage the community in conversation. This summer we are
honored to bring Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair to the Pacific Northwest. This exhibition
showcases not only stunning fashions that were created by some of the most well-known designers of the times,
but focuses on the innovation, creativity, and empowerment shared with individuals of all ages who attended
the Fashion Fairs between 1956 and 2009.
We look forward to generating similar excitement around our new music program, BAM SOUND & VISION. This new
program features an extremely talented line up of performers paired with our exhibitions, resulting in a feast for all
the senses and inviting new audiences to experience the best of BAM.

INSPIRING BEAUTY
50 Years of Ebony
Fashion Fair
MAY 20 – AUGUST 14, 2016
Inspiring Beauty, the first ever exhibition on the Ebony Fashion
Fair, explores the 50-year history of the fashion spectacle that
redefined concepts of beauty, style, and empowerment for
African Americans. The exhibition also profiles the Fair’s visionary
director and producer, Eunice W. Johnson, co-founder of
Johnson Publishing Company and publisher of Ebony and Jet
magazines. The garments, accessories, photographs, videos,
and ephemera that make up the exhibition convey the story
of Johnson’s ability to defeat racist attitudes while gaining
access to many of Europe’s premier fashion houses,
revolutionizing the relationship between African Americans
and the fashion establishment.
Among the approximately 40 statement designs on view are
stunning gowns, feathered coats, and sensational hats by icons
of fashion including Stephen Burrows, Christian Dior, Givenchy,
Christian Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent, Missoni, Nina Ricci, Sarli,

Ahearn's work in fiber has drawn from a variety
of cultural references. From old samplers, to Hello

symbols to question expectations about manhood
and its assumed qualities of courage, vigor, and
determination. In the artist’s hands, needlework—

MAY 20 – AUGUST 14, 2016
In 2014, Seth Rolland won the John and Joyce Price Award of

This award granted Rolland the opportunity to hold a solo

Rolland is a craftsman in the truest sense—someone who thinks
and communicates with his hands. His singular mastery of the
kerfing technique is possibly the most distinctive element of his
work. Traditionally used by luthiers to bend the lining of stringed
instruments, kerfing is, in simple terms, the act of making a

A perceptive observer of shape and structure, Rolland finds
inspiration for his remarkable furniture in the architecture of the
natural world. He distills nature's complexity, reducing it to its
defining elements, which are then suggested in his furniture—

EMANCIPATING THE PAST: Kara Walker’s Tales of Slavery and Power
Kara Walker is one of the most high-profile and controversial
power. Challenging conventional understandings of American
artists working in America today. Walker is best known for her
