TEL AVIV MUSEUM OF ART EXHIBITION CATALOGUES (2010) – NEO-EXPRESSIONIST PAINTING FROM BERLIN The exhibition includes important works by some of the prominent Neo-Expressionist artists active in Berlin during the 1970s and 1980s: Karl Horst Hödicke, Rainer Fetting, Salomé, Helmut Middendorf and Peter Chevalier. Their works represent interesting aspects of the "back to painting" trend that had swept over the centers of the western world, in Europe and the USA, as a backlash to the minimal and conceptual art of the 1960s and 1970s. The Neo-Expressionist artists reacted to their complex reality in West Berlin in the shadow of the Cold War, through sensuous, tactile painting that assimilated the colorful intensity and formal elements of German Expressionism of early 20th century and of American Abstract Expressionism. Hebrew-English 84 p.-- Paperback --27x23 cm Tel-Aviv, November 2010-February 2011 ISBN: 978-965-539-020-9 Price 50 NIS (2010) - SAM HAVADTOY: BEAUTY IS MYSTERY The exhibition presents portraits the artist made inspired by paintings by Alexej von Jawlensky in the collection of the museum. In some of the paintings, the figure's outlines are very clear, whereas in others, Jawlensky's paintings take on a new interpretation by Havadtoy, almost devoid of figurative aspect. The process of work, combining painting, erasing and concealing the image, at times by gluing onto it a layer of lace, leads Havadtoy's work towards minimalist, almost abstract painting that seeks to reach a sublime spiritual experience through its intensity. Hebrew-English 108 p.-- Paperback--23.5x23.5 cm Tel-Aviv, November 2010-January 2011 ISBN: 978-965-539-005-6 Price 50 NIS (2010) – AVIGDOR ARIKHA: SELF PORTRAITS This exhibition is presented as homage to Avigdor Arikha, who died this year at the age of 81. The exhibition includes 19 self-portraits painted by Arikha between 1948 and 2001. Compared with earlier portraits, which depict the artist as a soldier or a pianist, the later ones deal with his artistic oeuvre as a painter and as an observer of his work. More than anything else, Arikha focused in his last years on his own posture and facial expression, seeking to capture the animate and the inanimate, with an almost defeatist awareness of the inability of art to seize the transient. Hebrew-English 83 p.--Hardcover—28x22.5 cm Tel-Aviv, September-December 2010 ISBN: 978-965-539-021-6 Price 70 NIS (2010) - LARRY ABRAMSON: PAINTINGS 1975–2010 comprehensive exhibition of paintings by leading Israeli artist Larry Abramson. Abramson's work comprises mostly of series centered on one leading motif, e.g., The Black Square, The Yellow Square, Columns, Beams. Over the years, the series have accumulated more and more images and contexts that serve Abramson as linguistic units, recurring in his work to create each time new painterly sentences. Abramson began painting in the mid-1970s, concurrently with the appearance of new artistic forms in Europe and the USA, especially "New Painting," which challenged the conventions of conceptual and minimalistic neoavant-garde. Against this background, as an artist challenged by art history and theory, Abramson constructed his painting as a form of inter-era hybrid-painting; painting which, on the one hand, refers to values from the past, yet on the other hand offers an alternative system of ideas and concepts centered on the desire to rehabilitate painting as a relevant medium for the expression of the complicated reality of this place, where he lives. Hebrew-English 415 p.-- Paperback—28x24.5 cm Tel-Aviv, July-October 2010 ISBN: 978-965-539-018-6 Price 180 NIS (2010) – Si 51: TZURI GUETA The combination of sophisticated polymeric knowledge, textile traditions and the human element is the subject of the exhibition by textile designer Tzuri Gueta. Gueta (b.1968), a graduate of the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, has developed over the years surprisingly unsophisticated techniques for synthesizing natural fibers and synthetic polymers. He crosses between the technological and the traditional and seeks to expand the surface of fabric and thread using silicone, the polymer Si51, beyond its physical and functional boundaries. Hebrew-English 109 p.-- Paperback –22x16.5 cm Tel-Aviv, May-august 2010 ISBN: 978-965-539-012-4 Price 75 NIS (2010) - THE SCULPTURE OF EDGAR DEGAS The exhibition presents Edgar Degas’ (1834–1917) 74 sculptures in bronze. The bronzes were cast from previously unknown lifetime plasters made directly from Degas’ original waxes, with the artist’s knowledge and consent. The plaster of Degas’ most important. The plaster of Degas’ most important sculpture, “The Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen,” was discovered in 2001, leading to the 2004 discovery of the other 73 plasters. It is well documented that every Degas bronze was cast after the artist’s death. His sculptures focus on five main themes, presented here as five chapters: dancers, dancers backstage, bathing women, heads and horses. Hebrew-English 191p.-- Hardcover –29x23 cm Tel-Aviv, March-June 2010 ISBN:978-965-539-007-0 Price 120 NIS (2010) – TAMAR GETTER GO 2: WORKS 1974-2010 Tamar Getter is one of the prominent artists of the Israeli avant-garde that developed and peaked in the 1970s. In addition to being a student of Raffi Lavie, one of the most important figures in the domestic contemporary art scene, whose influence is evident mostly in her composition, Getter’s studies at the Tel Aviv University Department of Poetics and Comparative Literature during the 1970s have probably been even more constitutive and significant. Getter’s work expands the understanding of the modernist project and refers to the artistic object as one of constant research. Tamar Getter’s comprehensive exhibition, “GO 2”, emphasizes her work’s combined, multi-voiced, exaggerated and grotesque utterance. Hebrew-English 508 p.-- Hardcover –22x27 cm Tel-Aviv, March-July 2010 ISBN: 978-965-539-010 Price 250 NIS (2010) – TAL MAZLIACH : THE CONCEPT HAS GONE FOR A WALK Tal Mazliach’s paintings are constructed like a riddle which the viewer must decipher. Beyond the colorful, tempting, almost blinding cover, there hides a plethora of images, of figures and of symbols, imbued with sentences and words that consolidate into a full, complex pictorial and emotional world. A deep, prolonged observation exposes an intricate layering and reveals yet more details, which eventually become a flickering puzzle, demanding repeated scrutiny from the viewer.
