Serving to the nation since 1875 Other Facilities and Services Available 1. High Performance Computing System for running Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models used for Short Range Forecast of 24 & 48 hrs. Model products showing Wind Speed, MSLP, GP Height and Rainfall analysis of the day concerned and 48 hrs. Regional Meteorological Centre, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur - 440005 Ph: 0712-2283394, 2282397, 2282398, 2282157 Fax : 2284266 HISTORY The old observatory was established in Nagpur since 1869 at Mayo hospital premises. Meteorological office at Airport Nagpur was established in the year 1947 as a class–I observatory. It was further enhanced to Regional Meteorological Centre from 1st April 1954 and was shifted to new RMC Building opposite to Airport Terminal building. Earlier RMC Nagpur had only one State Meteorological Centre at Bhopal, but after creation of Chhattisgarh state, a new Meteorological Centre at Raipur was established in April, 2001. It covers overall maintenance of observatories in Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. NWP Product Rainfall & Wind forecast 2. Digital Met Data Dissemination System. The meteorological data are transmitted to different Met. Centres through satellite based Digital Met Data Dissemination (DMDD) equipments. The process remains unaffected by adverse weather condition. 4. High Speed Data Terminal (HSDT) is used to transmit and receive met data. The system is connected through VPN to the AMSS in Mumbai and RTH New Delhi. All met data can be accessed at HSDT using the Met Connect software interface. 5. www.imdnagpur.gov.in is RMC Nagpur website for online weather information. DMDD Equipment 3. Synergie Software for advanced weather forecasting. The system has been acquired from Meteo France International (MFI). Digital data & images are fed into central server as input & are disintegrated and processed to run numerous weather models. 6. IVRS system for weather on phone (Nagpur tel.nos.0712- 2294291, 2294292, 2294293, 2294296. Raipur tel. nos.0771- 2419248, 2419249. Bhopal tel.no.0755-2551523, 2551524) has been started in 2008 in the region. WEATHER FORECASTING Daily inference is issued at 12 hours noon, based on 03 UTC (0830 hours IST) data which contains synoptic features, forecast for the region for next 2 days, Heavy Rainfall warnings, position of the weather system if any, local forecast for city of Head Quarters and Outlook for subsequent 2 days along with the summary of weather phenomena occurred (Daily weather report). These bulletins are issued from Nagpur for entire central parts of the country comprising Vidarbha, MP & Chattisgarh; from Bhopal for MP and from Raipur for Chattisgarh state. Apart from this, weekly bulletin (Weekly Weather Report) is also issued on every Thursday which contains weather summary of previous week (Thursday to Wednesday). AVIATION Analysed Surface Level Chart & Cyclone Jal Satellite image from Synergie. The model outputs in the form of visual Charts, Maps, Graphs and Images are made available at user ends. This system facilitates improved real-time and short range forecasts. Aviation services of meteorology were made available at forecasting unit of RMC Nagpur since 1954. Weather information are provided to Air Trafic Control (ATC) and all Airlines at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur catering to the need of numerous flights daily. The aviation services include upper air winds, temperatures, significant weather (SIG Wx) charts, Aerodrome Warnings, TAFs, METARs and SIGMETs. Met. Support is also provided at Bhopal, Raipur (Mana), Indore, Gwalior, Khajuraho and Jabalpur Airports. HEAVY RAINFALL & SEVERE WEATHER WARNINGS Warnings for Heavy Rainfall and other severe weather like heat-wave, cold–wave, approaching low pressure system are disseminated well in advance to all concerned. REGIONAL DATA SUPPLY Daily, monthly and yearly meteorological data of observatories in Vidarbha, MP and Chattisgarh are supplied from Climatological unit of RMC Nagpur to different users. DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR (DWR) State of the art S-band Doppler Weather Radar of M/s Metstar Ltd. (China) make is capable of weather surveillance up to 250km (maximum up to 500km) around Nagpur. It provides imageries derived from volume scan depicting location and intensities of clouds, expected rainfall from these clouds, horizontal winds, wind shear etc. The imageries are a very good tool for weather analysis, forecasting and nowcasting. The Radar products are automatically updated to IMD’s website regularly. DWR PPI Imagery: 500km Around Nagpur DWR Building Nagpur DWR Rainfall imagery: 250Km around Nagpur AGRICULTURAL ADVISORY BULLETINS In 1932, a special division of Agricultural Meteorology was created with headquarters at Pune. The Farmer’s Weather Bulletin (FWB) system was started for farmers in 1945 in the department and Agro Meteorological Advisory Unit was established in 1987 to extend meteorological services to the farming community in the region. Agro Meteorological Advisory Units at RMC Nagpur for Vidarbha, at Bhopal for Madhya Pradesh and at Raipur for Chhattigarh are regularly issuing Bi-weekly Agromet Advisory Bulletins on every Tuesday and Friday in co-ordination with the State Agricultural Universities and State Agricultural Dept., Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh for the benefit of the farming community in the region. These units issue Bi-weekly District weather forecast valid for succeeding five days for the 3 Agro-Climatic Zones in Vidarbha, 9 Agro-Climatic Zones in M.P. and 3 AgroClimatic Zones in Chhattisgarh covering all the 11 districts in Vidarbha, 50 districts in M.P. and 18 districts in Chhattisgarh in co-ordination with Panjabrao Krishi Vidyapeeth, Nagpur and different Agricultural Universities in M.P. and Chhattisgarh. This Unit also issues Biweekly Bi-Lingual Agro-meteorological and Agriculture Bulletins on Tuesday and Friday in collaboration with the State Agriculture Departments. The bulletin reflects the Significant past weather phenomena prevailed and the relative forecast. The state Agriculture departments provide the inputs regarding Crop condition along with the Pests & Diseases and remedies to be followed to prevent them. The AgroMet Field Units of Universities provide the weather based Agro-advisories. Proposed 55 DW Radars’ network in India These bulletins are transmitted to electronic and print media viz. AIR, Doordarshan and newspapers for the benefit of farmers and other user agencies in the region.
