A Letter to the
Community
he mission of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Windemere Nursing & Rehabilitation Center – safeguarding the
health and welfare of all Vineyard
residents with high-quality, accessible medical services – is something
we pursue here every day, with every
individual who receives our care. But
behind the myriad of personal interactions is a larger vision. Our vision
is to be a strong and vibrant hospital, always seeking new opportunities to meet community needs, looking ahead to be sure that the
institution itself will remain healthy
so it can serve future generations.
We are delighted to be able to report that in 2006, the Hospital saw
real progress toward the fulfillment
of its vision.

Building for the
Next Generation
This year has seen the success of
the most ambitious fund-raising
campaign in Island history – the
quest to raise $42 million for a new
Martha’s Vineyard Hospital facility.
Thanks to the unwavering determination of both the Campaign’s
Steering and Islander Committees,
and the generous support of seasonal
and year-round Vineyarders, the
campaign not only reached, but exceeded our goal. We promised the
community at the outset of this campaign that the new Hospital would
be a first-class medical facility and
that we would not begin construction until all the needed funds were
raised. With those funds now secured, our promise to begin anew
will now start in earnest with the official ground breaking scheduled for
this summer. The entire campaign to
build a new Martha’s Vineyard Hospital has been an unprecedented
community effort and success. We
humbly thank you one and all.
A New Partnership
Another accomplishment to be
celebrated this year is the Hospital’s
formal affiliation with Massachusetts General Hospital and Partners
HealthCare. This affiliation builds
upon the collaborations that have
long existed between us and Mass
General. For the Island community,
this affiliation means enhanced and
expanded services for patients because it creates a context for better
delivery of care and services. We are
now part of one of the most respected health care institutions in, not
only the country, but the world.

Enhancing Services
As a nonprofit institution, Martha’s
Vineyard Hospital looks to its own
fiscal health – not so it can return a
profit to shareholders, but so it can
better care for the community it
serves. In that spirit, we have committed ourselves to reopening the
dental clinic in the hospital that has
been closed for several years. Although the clinic will most likely not
be a profit center, it will address an
urgent community need. We’re also
continuing our recruiting efforts to
bolster the ranks of primary care
physicians associated with the Hospital to increase access to care for our
growing community. This past May,
we opened a new suite of offices in
the Doctor’s Wing to accommodate
the physicians who have already
joined us, as well as to provide space
for those still to come.

This will be remembered as the
year when the new Martha’s Vineyard Hospital began the transition

is simply a facility that matches, at
last, the quality of the medical care

Commitment to Windemere
Meanwhile the caring work at
Windemere goes on. The economics
of the nursing home industry today
are profoundly challenging everywhere – and even more so on
Martha’s Vineyard. During this past

Report from Chief of the Medical Staff
t is a pleasure to write my first report as Chief of Staff on behalf
of the entire Medical Staff at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. The
last year has been one of tremendous excitement for us all.
Among our initiatives, we have been working closely with the administration of the hospital towards recruiting a full complement of
primary care physicians to meet our community’s needs with the
goal of decreasing wait times for patients to see physicians.
Procedure volume in our operating rooms and endoscopy suite
continues to increase and we have been upgrading our equipment to
keep pace with the rate at which technology is evolving. We thank
the contributors who make it possible for us to invest in the valuable
equipment that keeps us at the forefront of technology. In the past
year we have replaced our laparoscopic equipment with state of the
art digital equipment and flat panel displays that are equal to those
of larger hospitals.
The radiology department has implemented protocols that let us
perform studies of blood vessels in non-invasive ways. Previously
such studies could only be done at tertiary care centers. We can now
use technology to let the information travel to experts, so that our
patients don’t have to.
This past year our hospital also received designation as a stroke
center. Again we can use technology to allow 24/7 access via a video
data link to neurologists in Boston. This ensures outcomes similar to
those at larger health care facilities.
Quality of care remains our top priority and we continue as always
to monitor the care delivered to our patients in part by participating
in several nationwide protocols regarding the management of conditions such as heart failure and pneumonia. We have implemented

software algorithms that help us to identify, modify and improve system issues that relate to quality. We survey all patients and use their
feedback to continually improve the way we deliver care. Such surveys place us in the top tier of small hospitals in terms of patient satisfaction for overall care received here.
Of course, medicine is more than just technology. It also requires
caring and empathy. Our hospital is an affiliate of Planetree, a group
of hospitals dedicated to providing a healing environment where patients and their families are invited to be a part of the continuum of
care and to feel welcome at all times. We are excited that groundbreaking on our new hospital will take place this year and that the
new facility will not only be high tech, but will also be “high touch.”
Finally, from my standpoint as a member of the medical staff, the
most exciting event of the past year has been our affiliation with the
Massachusetts General Hospital. We are extremely proud to have
partnered with one of the best hospitals in the country and are only
beginning to explore ways in which this will enhance the care that
we provide to our residents and visitors. I look forward to reporting
to you next year on some of the changes that will take place in the
coming year as a result of this affiliation.
In closing, on behalf of the medical staff, my heartfelt thanks for
your support and patronage. We look forward to continuing to serve
the Vineyard community.
