Makes Case for New Hospital
Dear Friends,
A little over three years ago when I assumed the chairmanship of the
board of trustees of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital I made a pledge to the
Island that we would commit ourselves to becoming one of the best
small community hospitals to be found anywhere. Each year since, I’ve
been pleased to report in this space about all the enormous strides that
have been made in that quest.
Thanks to the dedication and hard work of everyone providing
superior health care and those supporting them, the hospital is enjoying
a resurgence in Island confidence and utilization. As the community has
witnessed all the real and substantive changes, there is a renewed sense
of confidence, not just within the hospital, but among all Islanders that
the hospital is truly committed to becoming the very best small
community hospital that it can be. Equally important, chief executive
officer Tim Walsh and his management team have continued to
emphasize the importance of fiscal discipline in maintaining a positive
bottom line and have worked tirelessly to end an era of perpetual losses.
In fact, this year I am pleased to report that we reached yet another
milestone. Not only has the hospital turned a profit for the third year in
a row; for the very first time in its history, Windemere also finished the
year in the black.
As proud as we are of our growing financial stability, our greatest
sense of satisfaction is about far more than a strengthened bottom line.
It is that we have built the foundation for our broader vision — a brand
new hospital. We have always known that we could not realistically ask
for support for the construction of a new facility until we proved that we
were also good fiscal managers.
I believe there is no endeavor more critical to the health and welfare
of all of us who have chosen the Vineyard to live or visit, than rebuilding

Recounts the Numbers for 2004
Dear Friends,
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I am pleased to report
that 2004 was again, another banner year for Martha’s Vineyard
Hospital — and also Windemere. For the third year in a row the
hospital showed a gain for the year. And for the very first time in its
history, Windemere also posted a modest profit for 2004. Ken Chisholm,
our nursing home administrator, and the entire Windemere staff deserve
enormous credit for doing what many thought was impossible. Just
three years ago, Windemere was sustaining such large losses that there
was serious debate about possibly having to close the Island’s only
nursing home. Although we are not totally out of the woods, we are now
cautiously optimistic that if we remain vigilant and disciplined (and the
government doesn’t change the rules) we will always have a high quality
skilled nursing facility to serve the Island’s elderly. Speaking of quality,
in addition to the financial turnaround, this year Windemere also
received its highest quality ranking ever by the Massachusetts
Department of Public Health and is now rated one of the best nursing
homes among its peers.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, we have been able to
continue our long-term plan for repairs and refurbishments of the
existing facility. After so many years of neglect, we have a very long
laundry list of maintenance issues that must be addressed. Everything
from the failing HVAC system, to the leaking roof, to cracked
windows and worn out doors is being attended to on a priority basis.
In addition, we have continued to invest in new technology in all
patient areas of the hospital, with the majority of the expenditures
going for new medical equipment and software that can enhance the
delivery of care today — and can also be easily transported to a new
facility tomorrow. In total, during this last year, we have invested close
to one million dollars in capital equipment and improvements and,
with the continued philanthropy of our community, we will be able to
continue the same needed level of reinvestment in our health care
facility for years to come.
This coming year we hope to complete our announced plan to create
a hospital based primary care physician group practice on the Island.

asking for everyone’s support of
our dream of a new hospital for
the next generation.
Our passion aside, the simple
truth is the dream can only
become reality if everyone
believes it must. If this new
hospital is to be, it will only
happen because of the support
and openhandedness of our
Island community. In every
sense, this new hospital will
reflect our community’s
commitment to quality health
care at home. With that in mind,
I am very proud to announce
another important planned change for our new hospital — a new name:
Martha’s Vineyard Community Hospital. It only seems right.
This is an incredibly important moment for the hospital and the
Island. Working together, I know we can create a health care institution
that can set the standard for rural health care. What seemed impossible
just a short time ago now seems totally within our grasp. I hope
everyone will join us in our campaign to begin anew.

In establishing a hospital
sponsored group practice we
believe we can greatly improve
the availability and accessibility
of primary care physicians by
taking over much of the
onerous administrative work
and allow doctors to spend
more time attending to patients
rather than paperwork. Equally
important, we believe a hospital
based group practice will help
us better recruit new doctors to
the Island to help meet a
growing community need. The
hospital has come to see that it
must take the lead in ensuring
that we have enough primary
care physicians on the Vineyard
and we are hard at work both
recruiting and creating an environment to attract high quality
physicians to the Island.
On the subject of new physicians, I am pleased to announce that we
have recruited two new primary care physicians, Dr. Gail O’Brien
and Dr. Julia Stunkel, to join our hospital staff over the next few
months. Both physicians will be great additions to our already
outstanding medical staff and we look forward to welcoming them to
the Island.
Finally, on behalf of everyone at the hospital, I would like to take this
opportunity to express our sincere thanks to everyone on our ever
growing list of contributors. Your generosity has allowed our hospital to
begin to blossom again. It is indeed an honor to live in such a caring and
generous community. We remain in your debt — and at your service.

Reports on a Successful Year
This past year has been one of significant change for the medical
staff.
We have successfully reorganized ourselves and we now have the
following departments:
Primary Care: Dr. Ilene Klein, Chief
Surgical Services: Dr. Denise Fraser, Chief
Anesthesia: Dr. Stephen London, Chief
Diagnostic Imaging: Dr. Stephen Miller, Chief
Emergency Medicine: Dr. Timothy Tsai, Chief
With this new departmental structure, the medical staff is able to
more efficiently manage the growing administrative responsibilities
required of medical staffs and be better able to provide the highest
level of care at the same time.
We continue to support medical education by hosting medical
students from Harvard Medical School and the University of
Massachusetts Medical School.
We are slowly moving into the computer information age. All of the
physicians’ offices are now connected to the Internet via the hospital
network. It is now possible for physicians to view radiology reports
and X-rays on their office computers. It is anticipated that in the near
future, we will also be able to receive laboratory reports in the same
fashion.
The relationship among the medical staff, the hospital administration
and the board of trustees has never been better. We are all working
together to build a new hospital and to make Martha’s Vineyard
Hospital the best critical access hospital in the country.

HOSPITAL ADDITION with center courtyard was completed in 1974.
SCHEMATIC FOR THE 1974 ADDITION. The $6.7 million, 80-bed addition was the largest single project ever undertaken on the Island.

a completely new hospital for
Martha’s Vineyard. The facility will
feature two floors of efficient, centralized, stateof-the-art services and technology. But it’s not
just about a building. With a new focus on patient-centered care, it’s about creating
a healing environment that will include expanded services, increased capabilities and our
longstanding commitment to care for all who live and visit here. It’s about addressing
the growing and changing needs of the Vineyard community. In every
sense, this new hospital will reflect our community’s commitment to quality health care at
home. Hence the new name: Martha’s Vineyard Community Hospital.
