ASSISTANT CAOCHES
Dick Vining, the dean of New York Metropolitan collegiate baseball
c
coaches,
recently completed his 33rd season with the Pioneers. The longttime head coach of the Pioneers continued his coaching career as an fifthyyear assistant with the Pioneers. The 2011 season marked his 58th at the
ccollegiate level (52 years as Head Coach and six years as an assistant). He was
iinducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Jame in
JJanuary, 2012. Fittingly, 2012 will also be the legendary coach’s last season, as
he recently announced his retirement.
h
He was head coach of the Pioneers program for 28 seasons, and
compiled a 574-503-13 record in 28 years at the helm (815-686-17 record in 51 seasons overall). C.W.
Post enjoyed a total of 15 winning seasons under Vining’s tutelage while reaching the NCAA Division
II Tournament four times before moving up to Division I in 1986. After moving to Division I, Vining’s
teams showed no signs of slowing down, capturing the Diamond Conference Championship in five of
their last seven seasons in the conference, including a run of four consecutive conference championships in the early 1990’s. Vining earned five Coach of the Year awards in recognition of his teams successes.
His lifetime record of 825-657-14 is testament to his long association with the sport, cementing his legacy as the first collegiate baseball coach in New York State to reach the 700-win plateau. In
2004, he reached a milestone by coaching his 1,500th college game.
A former associate professor of health science and physical education at C.W. Post for 17 seasons,
Vining served as president of the Metropolitan Collegiate Baseball Conference from 1983-84. He was
a member of the NCAA Division II selection and all-star committees, and made enormous contributions to the international game, as helped spread the game of baseball overseas by becoming the first
U.S. coach to take a collegiate team to the People’s Republic of China in 1985. One year later, he took
his team to compete in Holland, followed by a 1987 tour of what was then Czechoslovakia.
Vining holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Connecticut and a
master’s in education from Springfield College. He and his wife, Virginia, reside in Douglaston, N.Y.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW
2012 Baseball
After a rebuilding 2011, first year interim head coach
Bill Gaffney believes that the experience the young Pioneers gained last season carries over into 2012. Focused
on improving last year’s record, the C.W. Post baseball
team will focus on making it to the East Coast Conference Championships, then capturing the automatic bid
for the NCAA East Regional.
“We need to improve our offensive production,” said
Gaffney. “We started four freshmen last year in most
games and sometimes it is a lot to ask of a freshman to
step in and be productive right from the start. Those
players are more experienced
this year and we have some
junior college transfers who will
bring additional experience.”
Pitching and defense will be
the strengths of the Pioneer
lineup. Offensively, the team
will look to take advantage of a
speed-laden lineup to push runs
across the plate. “I feel confident
that our pitching and defense
will keep us in most games and
that will allow our more experienced offense an opportunity to
do their job,” said Gaffney.

Anthony Zapulla (Staten Island, N.Y.) has a good running fastball and will serve as the team’s closer.
Senior Steve Plochochi (Sayville, N.Y.) will joint juniors Ryan O’Kelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), Brian Tardif (Cutchogue, N.Y.) and John Swertfager (Katonah,
N.Y.), sophomores Frank Catalano (Brooklyn, N.Y.)

Tom Kastelan (Deer Park, N.Y.) in adding depth to the
pitching staff and looking for time out of the bullpen.

Outfield
The outfield will be manned by Rich Maccarone
(Glen Cove, N.Y.) who will take over in center field after
a solid rookie year where he played both infield and
outfield. Maccarone has adjusted well to his new position and his superlative speed helps him cover a lot of
ground and track down balls in the gap.
In left field will be sophomore Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.), who joins the baseball team full-time after a year as a member of both the baseball and football
teams. Iacono is a solid outfielder with good speed and
surprising pop in his bat that will help increase the Pioneers’ run production. Simone will be the starting right
fielder and in games where he goes behind the plate,
junior transfer Gabriel Santos (Jamaica, N.Y.) will play
right. Santos is a tall, strong player with good power at
the plate and solid defensive skills.
Senior Steve Smith (West Islip, N.Y.), junior David Saldana (Deer Park, N.Y.), and sophomore Ryan
Sloane (Westbury, N.Y.) will add depth in the outfield.
Smith is a veteran player and a solid outfielder, while
Saldana has excellent speed and could see later innings
in the field as a defensive replacement. Sloane is another
option for the Pioneers as he saw some starts in his
rookie season and showed potential at the plate.
Outlook
The Pioneers will start the season with a five-game
trip to South Carolina, before hosting a handful of
games at home, including traditionally strong Stonehill
College in a doubleheader on March 4. The team will
travel to Winter Park, Fla., for a seven-game swing,
highlighted by nationally-ranked Rollins College on
March 16, before returning home to begin ECC play
against University of Bridgeport on March 21.
“We have stressed the need to play hard and hustle,”
said Gaffney. “The team has worked hard on the fundamentals; both defensively and offensively. In baseball

Babylon, N.Y.), also the team’s starting right fielder, will
serve as Corona’s backup. He has a quick release behind
the plate that will keep runners in check and good speed
that will put him at the top of the lineup.
Seniors Paul DelGiacco (Levittown, N.Y.) and Dan
Burnett (Farmingdale, N.Y.) will be the bullpen catchers
and will also push for at-bats in pinch hitting roles.
Senior Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.) will serve as a
backup infielder while also getting time in the lineup as
the designated hitter. Sophomore Anthony Brunetti
(Bayville, N.Y.) makes his baseball debut after two seasons as a standout running back for the Pioneer football
team. Brunetti has a powerful bat from the left side of
the plate and could play one of the corner infield positions as well as time at designated hitter. Tolan is another option at DH, while sophomore Connor Coman
(Bay Shore, N.Y.) will be a solid backup middle infielder
and an option as a pinch hitter or pinch runner.

EAST COAST CONFERENCE
2012 Baseball
In July of 2006 the conference formerly known as the New
York Collegiate Athletic Conference adopted a new name, the
East Coast Conference (ECC), and branding, reflective of the
growth the league experienced since debuting in 1988. The
conference was formed to enhance intercollegiate athletic
competition among member institutions and to assist them
in integrating their athletics into their academic program
in a fiscally sound way. The ECC is committed to the highest standards of scholarship, sportsmanship, teamwork, and
citizenship. Its mission is to promote the total person concept
in its student-athletes, which stresses the abilities to excel in
academic achievement, athletic competition, and positive
character traits.
ECC members for 2011-2012 include: University of
Bridgeport (Conn.); C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University (Brookville, N.Y.); University of the District of Columbia; Dowling College (Oakdale, N.Y.); Mercy College (Dobbs
Ferry, N.Y.); Molloy College (Rockville Centre, N.Y.); New York
Institute of Technology (Old Westbury, N.Y.); Queens College
(Flushing, N.Y.); and St. Thomas Aquinas College (Sparkill,
N.Y.).
The ECC sponsors the following championship sports:
baseball; men’s and women’s basketball; men’s and women’s
cross country; men’s and women’s lacrosse; softball; men’s and
women’s tennis; men’s and women’s soccer; and women’s volleyball.
The East Coast Conference is a proud member of the
NCAA and Division II. Division II is a dynamic and engaging
group of colleges, institutions and conferences of varying sizes
and educational missions. Division II members encourage and
support diversity; value sportsmanship, fairness and equity;
and place the highest priority on the overall educational excellence of the student-athlete.

David Steinberg - President, Long Island University
Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution
since 1985. The son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he
was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in
England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on
a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian
studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary
degrees.
The author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine
history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His first
book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “The Philippines: A Singular and a
Plural Place,” now in its third edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best singlevolume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of
Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the
world to co-author “The Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,”
which was published in 2005.
Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when
Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies,
the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others.
He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. The couple
has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accomplishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow.
Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post
Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal
scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008.
A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacific Whale Foundation
in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University,
and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post.
As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private
university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduate and 2,300
continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development,
admissions and recruitment, retention, financial aid, athletics, student affairs, public safety, and
buildings and grounds.
His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In
2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in
achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and field research opportunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior.
Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philosophy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the
University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of
Hawai’i: The Long Journey Back.”

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS - BRYAN COLLINS
Bryan Collins enters his sixth year as the Director of Athletics at C.W. Post. Under Collins’
leadership, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and
national levels of athletic performance and academics.
During Collins’ tenure, the Pioneers have achieved both athletic and academic success.
Notable achievements include 26 conference titles as well as NCAA championship titles from the
2007 women’s lacrosse and 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams.
This past season, the men’s and women’s cross country, women’s swimming, men’s lacrosse,
and softball teams all participated in NCAA tournaments.
C.W. Post boasts some of top-ranked programs in the country that are frequently ranked in
national polls. The Pioneers finished first in the East Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup
standings for 2009-10 - the second Cup win (2006-07) during Collins’ tenure. Prior to the 2007-08
academic year, the football and field hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Off the field, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. Among the efforts since his
arrival have been visitations to the St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Bayside, N.Y., while also volunteering with other charitable
organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the 2008-09 academic year, C.W. Post
student-athletes completed over 3,200 hours of service.
Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as
well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and academic
achievements in the classroom. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the
Adopt-A-Faculty program.
During 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete
Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual
student-athlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic
and academic success. The department also established an
Academic Honor Roll to honor student-athletes’ who receive a
minimum 3.0 grade point average.
Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a brand new state-of-the art sound system
for the stadium. In addition, all of the outdoor athletic fields
have undergone improvements to their playing surface. The
Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball
and volleyball teams, received a new sound system as well as a
working press row table for media and game operations staff.
A former student-athlete at St. John’s University, Collins
played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was
the recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St.
John’s student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage,
perseverance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifice in seeking
to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received
his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1987.
Collins and his wife, Patti, reside in Sayville, N.Y. with
their son, Tyler (16) and daughter, Megan (11).
