NATIONAL FALLEN FIREFIGHTER MEMORIAL SERVICE MOVED:
October 5 - 6, 2013—32nd National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend

Ann Seton Daughters of Charity located next to the National
Emergency Training Center campus.
The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service
planned for this weekend will not be held at the National
Fire Academy in Emmitsburg due to the Federal Government shutdown. The candlelight vigil for the 81 Fallen
Firefighters will be held Saturday evening at the Basilica of
the Daughters of Charity campus at 4 p.m. (next to the
NFA; and web live-stream only due to lack of space at the
Basilica). On Sunday, the 2013 memorial service will be
held at the Knott Arena at Mount St. Mary’s University at
10 a.m. (This is the building at the parking lot from which
the busses have picked up in the past.) If you have never
attended a service due to a hardship in walking, this may
be a good time to attend. (There is still some walking involved.) You will want to arrive early for the Sea of Blue
procession. A beautiful tribute to our heroes!
Do you know what to do if your cooking oil catches on fire?
A grease fire starts when your cooking oil becomes too hot. When heating,
oil starts to boil, then it starts smoking, and then it will catch on fire. Most
vegetable oils have a smoking point of around 450 degrees. Animal fats will
start smoking around 375 degrees.
The best safety is prevention. Stay in the kitchen when cooking or frying.
The oil wont catch fire as soon as it starts smoking, but it is an indication that
its well on its way to getting there.
If the worst happens and your oil does catch on fire, do the
following;




 Turn the Heat Off—don't move the pot. You may accidentally splash
yourself with hot grease.
Cover the Pot with a Metal Lid—Fire can’t exist without oxygen. With the lid on (and the heat off), the fire will
consume all of the oxygen and put itself out. Do not use a glass lid as it will shatter.
Pour on Baking Soda—Baking soda will extinguish a fire only if it is small. It takes a lot of baking soda to do
the job.
Spray the Pot with a Class B Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher—Use this as a last resort, as the fire extinguisher will contaminate your kitchen. Still, its better than the alternative if the fire is getting out of control.
Get Out and Call 911—Don’t try to be a hero! If the fire gets out of control, get out and find a phone to call
911.
Whatever you do, DO NOT do the following:



Do Not Use Water—Water will cause the oil to splash and will spread the fire.
Vaporizing water carries oil particles, also spreading the fire.
Do Not Move the Pot or Carry It Outside—Throwing the pot outside may
seem logical at the moment, but trying to move the pot might splash burning oil on
you, your home, or anything outside.
Do Not Throw Any Other Baking Product on the Fire—Flour might look like baking soda, but it will
not react the same. Only baking soda can help put out a grease fire.
Hopefully, you will never be in a situation where you actually have to use this advice!

The new Fire Safety House has been very busy since it hit the road! Thank you to Evelyn
Graf and John Spiker for transport and setup at the events. Please make arrangements to take
training on the trailer if you have not already done so. You may know the classroom, but the setup
and smoke may be a little more complicated. Evelyn and John may not always be available to
transport and setup the trailer for you when you need it! Thank you!

Do you know the signs or symptoms of a stroke?
Think FAST.
F is for Face: facial droop or asymmetry when smiling
A is for Arms: Does one arm drift when holding out in
front? Is one weaker than the other?
S is for Speech: Is the speech slurred? Does the person have difficulty speaking or understanding?
