HAMLOW HAPPENINGS
EVELYN HAMLOW ELEMENTARY - NOVEMBER 2010
The first of November always
brings anticipation of the holiday
season, colder weather, wind and
snow. As the temperatures begin
to drop, please remember to send
your child to school with warm
clothes. We do go out for recess
if the temperature or wind chill is
0 or above. Students will not go
outside before school begins if it
is raining or snowing. Should
inclement weather or other
conditions cause the closing of
school, the announcement will be
made by radio and television as
soon as possible. You can also be
notified by District 145 alert
system that will allow you to
receive text messages and/or
email alerts. To sign up for this
alert system, log on to

the Front Page tab and then

2009-2010 THANKSGIVING FEAST
1st & 2nd Grade
Thanksgiving feast
will be Tuesday,
November 23rd
at 2:25
in the Hamlow Gym.
We will finish our family unit during the
weeks of November 1st- 5th. We have
learned about similarities and differences
in families as well as how we each have
responsibilities in a family. The family
surveys have been a great way to learn
about each Kindergartner and his or her
family.

Fall is here! In Kindergarten we have
been noticing all the changes that are
taking place during this beautiful season.
The kids have enjoyed reading stories
and participating in several fall activities.
We had a fantastic time on our trip to
Vala’s Pumpkin Patch and we would like
to thank everyone who volunteered
during our field trip. With everyone’s
teamwork, we made the field trip a
success and a great experience for all
the kids. Thank you!

The first graders spent some time learning
about fire safety in their health unit. They
know how fire can be helpful and harmful
and ways to stay safe around fire. Many of
the children made a plan with their family so
that they know what to do in case of a fire
at home. EDITH is a name to help us to
remember to have Exit Drills In The Home.
Some children even drew out a plan to show
their escape route. Just a reminder to install
smoke detectors in your homes and check
the batteries in the alarms you already have.

We ended our unit with a trip to Fire Station
#1 in Lincoln. The firefighters showed us the
bay area where the engines, trucks and
ambulances are kept. They talked to us
about what paramedics and firefighters do
and the tools they use.
Our trip was cut short when the firefighters
had to leave on a real call. It was amazing
to see how fast they put their gear on and
left! Maybe some of our first graders will
decide to be a firefighter or paramedic when
they grow up.

A Word About
Reading
HEALTH NOTES:
by Julie Lutjeharms
•••
The best way to help your child become a
good reader is to read to and with them
at home. The more children read, or are
read to, the better. Encourage your child
to read books, cereal boxes, street signs
and magazines.
Teaching a child to write also helps them
to read. Keep plenty of pencils, markers,
paint, chalk, crayons, and paper on hand.
Younger children can learn to form letters
and then write words. Older children can
write letters than can be mailed to
relatives.
After listening to, or reading aloud a story,
it is beneficial to talk about the book with
your child.
Some questions you might ask are:
What was the title and who was the
author?
Who were the characters in the story?
Where did the story take place?
When did the story take place?
What was your favorite part of the
book?
The reading patterns you establish
at home directly influence your child’s
ability to do well in school. The more
we can work together with reading,
the more successful your child will be.
Happy Reading!
