We will finish our family unit during the weeks of November 1st- 5th. We have learned about similarities and differences in families as well as how we each have responsibilities in a family. The family surveys have been a great way to learn about each Kindergartner and his or her family. Kindergarten News by Kim Webster & Jenny Wyatt ••• Fall is here! In Kindergarten we have been noticing all the changes that are taking place during this beautiful season. The kids have enjoyed reading stories and participating in several fall activities. We had a fantastic time on our trip to Vala’s Pumpkin Patch and we would like to thank everyone who volunteered during our field trip. With everyone’s teamwork, we made the field trip a success and a great experience for all the kids. Thank you! 1st Grade News by Terese Brown ••• The first graders spent some time learning about fire safety in their health unit. They know how fire can be helpful and harmful and ways to stay safe around fire. Many of the children made a plan with their family so that they know what to do in case of a fire at home. EDITH is a name to help us to remember to have Exit Drills In The Home. Some children even drew out a plan to show their escape route. Just a reminder to install smoke detectors in your homes and check the batteries in the alarms you already have. 2nd Grade News Visit the District website to see additional Kindergarten information and the Kindergarten Calendar (downloadable in PDF) www.dist145schools.org We ended our unit with a trip to Fire Station #1 in Lincoln. The firefighters showed us the bay area where the engines, trucks and ambulances are kept. They talked to us about what paramedics and firefighters do and the tools they use. Our trip was cut short when the firefighters had to leave on a real call. It was amazing to see how fast they put their gear on and left! Maybe some of our first graders will decide to be a firefighter or paramedic when they grow up. A Word About Reading HEALTH NOTES: by Julie Lutjeharms ••• The best way to help your child become a good reader is to read to and with them at home. The more children read, or are read to, the better. Encourage your child to read books, cereal boxes, street signs and magazines. Teaching a child to write also helps them to read. Keep plenty of pencils, markers, paint, chalk, crayons, and paper on hand. Younger children can learn to form letters and then write words. Older children can write letters than can be mailed to relatives. After listening to, or reading aloud a story, it is beneficial to talk about the book with your child. Some questions you might ask are: What was the title and who was the author? Who were the characters in the story? Where did the story take place? When did the story take place? What was your favorite part of the book? The reading patterns you establish at home directly influence your child’s ability to do well in school. The more we can work together with reading, the more successful your child will be. Happy Reading! We are at the beginnin g of flu season. Flu shots an d mists are available at the healt h department. some pharmacies an d most doctors offices. Please remember to evaluate your children before sendin g them to school if they are no t feeling well. Students with a tem perature of 100 or more will be sent home and must be fever free for 24 ho urs before returning. Please call the health office if you have concerns.
