Birthingways
A Birthingway tradition, the second year
midwifery students are tasked with raising
money to pay for the special Birthingway
necklaces for their fellow students who will be
completing cohort this spring. Our 2nd year
Midwifery cohort decided to put on a yard
sale October 10th at Rhonda Ray's home.
They met their fundraising goal!
Thank you to everyone who donated and
stopped by to support the fundraiser!

Birth Announcements
I woke up having contractions 7 weeks before my due date.
I timed my contractions for a full 12 hours, with them
getting longer, stronger, and closer together before heading
to the hospital. When I got there, they gave me medicine to
stop my contractions, and let my baby stay in longer to be
more well-equipped for life on the outside. I was in the
hospital for 4 days, receiving treatment for preeclampsia,
and my contractions had stopped after my first night there. I
was going to be discharged to go home and be on bedrest
on the day that my water broke at 4:30am. After a
whirlwind 4 hour unmedicated labor, Homer Pine Brown
was born on 8/6 at 4lb10oz, and was perfect and doing great
despite being so small. Although we had planned a peaceful
September home birth, our crazy August hospital birth was
beautiful, and the most wonderful thing I've ever done. I am
so glad to introduce this sweet little soul into the world!

Staff News
Dawn, Birthingway's Registrar, has relocated
to Salem. A note from Dawn:
"I've felt so blessed to be a part of
Birthingway - our mission, our community,
the strength and humanity and learning and
all the things we struggle with and strive for
together. This is a special path for each of us,
and I'm thankful for the opportunity to have
shared it with you all a little while."
Birthingway's new Registrar, Sadie, has
volunteered as a doula and briefly trained as a
midwife, and is passionate about the respect for
human rights inherent in midwifery practice.
She's still not sure what she wants to be when
she grows up, but loves clerical work and being
an efficient cog in the machine. A native of
Northern California, she's now very happy to
call Portland home. While not working, she likes
to spend her time knitting, learning new things,
and hanging out with her partner, two adorable
dogs, and one very spunky parrot.
Birthingways
Lauren, Birthingway's new Learning Resources
Coordinator, recently earned her Bachelor of
Arts degree in Community Health Education
from Portland State University. Before joining
Birthingway, she interned with the Breastfeeding
Coalition of Oregon, and Girls Incorporated of
the Pacific Northwest, causing her to realize
that she is pretty much only interested in
participating in organizations that are in line
with her feminist and social justice values.
When she is not at Birthingway, she is slinging
fresh organic drinks at her juice cart job. When
she isn’t busy working for awesome people, she
enjoys camping with her husband and corgi,
sewing her own clothes, and checking out too
many books at a time from the library.
After two years at Birthingway, Mel, our
Outreach Coordinator, will be stepping
down to pursue her developing birth
photography career at
Sommessa: The Art of Birth
“My photography business has been growing
and I'm looking forward to devoting more
time to it! My time at Birthingway has been
extremely rewarding and I value all of the
amazing relationships I've made over the
years. I hope to stay connected to this great
group of people!”
