Sun shines again
for Bristol show
Classics show bounces back after
bad weather marred 2014 edition
Thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts
flocked to the Bristol Classic
Motorcycle Show at Shepton Mallet’s
Royal Bath and West last over the
weekend of 7-8th February. The show
– hampered by the Somerset floods in
2014 – was back to full strength, and
its new auction racked up £250,000
in sales. A Vincent Black Shadow
motorcycle sold for £55,000, while
several ‘barn-find’ restoration projects
were snapped up, including a 1932
Norton.
The Bristol event included trade and
autojumble stands, together with all
manner of bikes, parts, spares, riding
kit and accessories ahead of a new
season of riding and restoring.
Exhibition manager Nick Mowbray
said: “Last year’s Bristol show was
excellent, but there’s no denying it was
severely affected by the awful weather
conditions encountered by the region in
the early part of 2014. It was wonderful
to see the crowds come back in huge
numbers for what is many people’s
favourite two-wheel event of the year.”
Classic Bike Shows’ next event
is the Classic Motorcycle Show at
Staffordshire County Showground on
25-26th April. For more details, visit
www.classicbikeshows.com.
Budding racer Danny Webb is asking
racing fans to chip in £20 to help
him mount a World Supersport
Championship challenge in 2015. For
£20, sponsors will have their name
featured on the team garage boards
and website, and a signed poster; £40
gets all of the above plus a T-shirt.
For £200, sponsors also get two
paddock passes to the British WSB
round at Donington Park. For more
information,contact Webb by email:

Revised dates
for Motorcycle
Live 2015
Motorcycle Live 2015 will take
place one week later than originally
planned, opening at its usual venue,
the NEC, Birmingham on Saturday 28th
November and closing on Sunday 6th
December.
The decision comes following
confirmation that the EICMA exhibition
in Milan has moved from its usual
early-November slot to later in the
month. EICMA is traditionally where
the leading manufacturers unveil
their new models, many of which are
then shipped to Birmingham to make
their UK debut.
“If we had maintained our
traditional slot of the last two
weeks of November, it would have
been logistically impossible for
manufacturers to ship their new
models to The NEC in time for the
opening day of the show,” explains
Motorcycle Live organiser Finlay
McAllan. “This would ultimately mean
that UK motorcycle fans would miss
out on the opportunity to see the new
models so soon after launch. For that
reason, we have decided to move
Motorcycle Live 2015 back one week.”
Motorcycle Live 2015 will take
place at the NEC, Birmingham from
28th November to 6th December 2015.
Tickets will go on sale in August 2015.
Britain’s most
extreme speeders
IAM freedom of information request reveals
fastest recorded illegal speeds
The Institute of Advanced Motorists
(IAM) has released examples of extreme
excessive speeding caught on safety
cameras across England and Wales in
2014. The highest speed recorded was
146mph, on two occasions, both on the
M25, one by a motorist travelling anticlockwise near Clacket Lane Services,
the other going clockwise at Swanley.
There were three other instances
of speeds over 140mph recorded:
145mph on the M6 toll road (70mph
Five drivers were clocked
at 140mph-plus in 2014
limit), 141mph on the A1 Great Ponton
Northbound road (70mph limit) and
140mph on the A5 Crick road (60mph
limit). But perhaps the most astounding
figure was 128mph recorded on London
Road, East Grinstead, a 30mph road –
exceeding the limit by 98mph.
The statistics were released following
a freedom of information request made
by IAM to police forces in England and
Wales. Of the 41 police force areas from
which the IAM requested information,
36 responded. London’s worst speeder
was recorded at 123mph on a 30mph
road. The highest figure recorded in a
50mph zone was 120mph, on the A631
Beckingham road in Nottinghamshire.
Sarah Sillars, IAM chief executive,
said: “It is disheartening to say the least
that some road users are showing such
disregard for the safety of all other
road users. At speeds of 140mph, an
individual is travelling at nearly two-anda-half miles a minute. At that speed, it is
simply impossible to react to anything
that might happen in front of you.”
BMW’s recordbreaking January
German manufacturer off to a flying start in 2015
Following a record-breaking 2014,
BMW Motorrad has outdone its
previous best January in terms of
sales. The brand sold 6,263 units
(compared to 5,438 for January
2014) – growth of 15.2 per cent.
BMW could be further boosted
by the arrival of the new S1000RR,
due to hit dealerships soon. There are
two new boxer models lined up for
the start next season: the new BMW
R1200R and the R1200RS.
Heiner Faust, BMW Motorrad’s
head of sales and marketing: “2015 is
off to a very successful start for BMW
Motorrad… it is the best January
in company’s history. Our current
New S1000RR: Due to land soon
model range is meeting a strong
demand worldwide. Numerous
innovative and emotional vehicles
will be supplementing our product
portfolio this coming season.”

‘Think Bikes’
campaign goes
global
Wing-mirror stickers help keep
drivers on the lookout
Great choice
for suspension
A campaign developed last year by the AA to encourage
drivers to look out for those on two wheels is being rolled out
globally by the FIA, the world motoring organisation.
‘Think Bikes’, which features a naked cyclist, was
launched by the AA Charitable Trust in March 2014. To date
the campaign film has had almost 270,000 YouTube views,
but now has the potential to reach millions more drivers
across 111 FIA motoring clubs in in Europe, the Middle East
and Africa.
As part of the campaign, around two million wing-mirror
stickers have been distributed as a reminder to drivers to
do a double-take for cyclists and bikers. The stickers are
available free of charge to organisations and individuals.

NMDA: ‘100,000
reasons to be
cheerful!’
Dealer association celebrates
strong signs of market recovery
The National Motorcycle
Dealers Association
(NMDA) is encouraging the
industry to reflect on the
positive growth achieved
during the past year. New
registrations in 2014 were
higher than in any year
since 2009; December
sales overall were up 10.6
per cent, with 4,554 bikes
registered in the month,
pushing the sales figure
for the year over the magic
100k mark to a magnificent
101,277 new machines.
The biggest growth
was in the 51-125cc
sector, though demand
also increased by 18.3
per cent and 13.7 per
cent respectively in
the 651-1,000cc and
over-1,000cc sectors.
In the style sectors, the
naked category showed
the greatest growth with
an uplift of 32.1 per cent
(much of it in the 125cc
capacity band).
The NMDA believes
manufactures have
successfully adapted and
modified their product
offerings to reflect the
current demands, and are
benefiting from generally
increased confidence in
the economy. For more
information, contact
Stephen Latham at the
National Motorcycle
Dealers Association on

Bike Tyrestore’s
2015 Tyrecyclopedia
Leading trade distributor gives
tyre price-bible an overhaul
Bike Tyrestore, UK trade supplier of the
leading brands of motorcycle, scooter,
moped and bicycle tyres has given its
Tyrecyclopedia catalogue a complete
overhaul for the 2015 sales season.
After listening to customer feedback
following the concept launch last year,
the listings are now categorised by sizesector, rather than manufacturer. The
comprehensive, 132-page A4 manual
is a user-friendly and easy to navigate,
data-filled collection of essential
tyre information and advice on tyres
stocked by Bike Tyrestore. It offers a
suggested selling price so that traders
can comfortably show and share the
information with their customers, rather
than trying to hide any trade-sensitive
material.
Commenting on the new version of
the bumper-edition, Bike Tyrestore’s UK
sales manager Adam Rous said: “Our
trade account customers told us that
including a fair and reasonable suggested
selling price really worked as they could
confidently show the price guide book
to their end-user customers, safe in
the knowledge that they wouldn’t be
compromised by any sensitive trade-only
pricing slipping out.
The Bike Tyrestore 2014
Tyrecyclopedia is distributed free
of charge with this March issue of
Motorcycle Trader.
For additional copies and trade
account information, contact Adam Rous

Dirt Bike Show
comeback for
Trade & Press Trial
Traders’ chance to show their skills...
The International Dirt Bike Show is set to host a
returning Trade and Press Trial organised by the event’s
owner, Mortons Media group.
A popular feature of many of the company’s
previous shows, Mortons will reintroduce the initiative
at its annual off-road spectacular at Stoneleigh Park.
Although planning is still in the early stages, it has been
confirmed that all proceeds will go to a worthy charity.
Along with operating some of the world’s largest
classic motoring and off-road events, Mortons is a
market leader in motorcycle magazine publishing and
has many industry links.
The trial will be open to all members of the
motorcycle press, trade and sport and virtually any
machine will be eligible.
Mortons’ event director, Brian Hill, said: “What
better way to inject some fun into the industry than
to hold a rule-free-trial in the grounds of Stoneleigh
Park. Final plans will be unveiled in due course, but
Photographer Nick Nicolls on the other side
of the camera lens in the Press Trial of 1960
we wanted to announce now that the event is on so
potential participants can note it in their diaries and
on their calendars. It will be a sort of run-what-youbring meets off-road trials, and anyone found taking it
seriously will be disqualified, or maybe even fined!”
The 2015 International Dirt Bike Show will run
from Thursday 29th October through to Sunday 1st
November at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. Visit
dirtbikeshow.co.uk for further information.
Trader learned that photographer Brian ‘Nick’ Nicholls sadly passed away in February
after a long battle with cancer. As a mark of respect, a pictorial display of Nick’s
photography adorned the entrance to the recently held Classic Dirt Bike Show.

accidental
damage cover
Bikesure, Motorcycle Trader’s
Insurance Provider of the Year,
has launched a scheme to provide
combined accidental damage and

Traditionally, only comprehensiv

enough to be refused theft cover, also
unable to secure any protection for
their own bike following an accident.
Bikesure’s new scheme will remove
that particular insurance obstacle.

Marrow-thon

Charity ride in support of cancer care
all set for April edition
The Bone-shaker Marrow-thon charity
ride, which raises money for blood
cancer charities, is set to make a return
in April. Last year’s inaugural edition
of the event raised more than £2,000,
which was donated to Cure Leukaemia,
the Anthony Nolan Trust and the Queen
Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Organiser Katherine Sinfield, herself
a cancer survivor, explains: “We knew
straight away that the Bone-shaker
Marrow-thon would have to make a
return in 2015. We’re holding the ride
this year on Sunday 19th April, and it
promises to be bigger and better. We
have 150 bikes signed up already. We’ll
set off from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital
in Birmingham at 11am and make the 35mile ride back to Burton-on-Trent.”
The ride is open to all motorcycles,
trikes, scooters, mopeds and vintage
machines. Riders are asked to make a £5
donation to ride and a fund-raising raffle
will be drawn on the day.

Employers
urged to enforce
random drug and
alcohol testing
Each year, drugs and alcohol
cost British businesses around
17 million working days and
more than £6 billion in lost
productivity.
AlcoDigital supplies policeapproved drug and alcohol
testing equipment and is
urging employers to enforce
random workplace drug and
alcohol testing. The company
believes this will help reduce
both fatal and non-fatal injury
at work.
With around a third of
employees admitting to being
hung-over at work and 15 per
cent confessing to having
been drunk in the workplace,
it’s no surprise that resulting
problems, for example lack
of concentration, reduced
productivity and errors, are
more common than ever in the
workplace.
Says Suzannah Robin,
AlcoDigital sales and training
director: “In the UK there
is no legal requirement for
employing organisations to
implement alcohol policies,
but we would like to encourage
employers to adopt a contract
clause for random testing.
With this in place it forms basic
consent agreement for the
employee and may make staff
more wary of consuming large
amounts of alcohol before
entering the workplace.”

regarding drug and alcohol
testing in the workplace or for
more information on enforcing
a clause in an employee
handbook or contract visit

Inflation set to
remain low in
2015
Annual CPI inflation in
December 2014 was 0.5 per
cent, a historically low level,
down from 1.0 per cent in
November 2014.
The main contribution to
the fall was the December
2013 increases in gas and
electricity rises, which fell
out of the annual calculation,
and from the continuing fall in
motor fuel prices. Goods price
inflation in December 2014
was minus 1.0 per cent while
services inflation was 2.3 per
cent.
Commenting on the CPI
inflation figures for December
2014 published by the ONS,
David Kern, Chief Economist
at the British Chambers
of Commerce said; “The
historically low inflation
figure in December 2014
confirms that inflationary
pressures in the UK are very
low. Although the fall between
November and December was
exaggerated by the increase
in gas and electricity prices
a year ago, it is likely that CPI
inflation will remain below 1 per
cent in 2015.”

HMRC’s national minimum
wage enforcement budget
will be increased by a further
£3m in the financial year 2015

As well as being publicly

employers that fail to pay their
workers the national minimum

of up to £20,000. This is being
legislated for through the
Small Business, Enterprise

this penalty can be applied to
each underpaid worker rather

Affordable flood
insurance
People in the highest flood
risk areas are to be better
protected against spiralling
insurance costs as Flood Re is
closer to implementation.
After ongoing negotiations
with the Association of
British Insurers (ABI) and
Flood Re, an agreement has
been reached on a number
of matters regarding how
Flood Re will operate. This will
enable legislation to be laid
in parliament next year and once approved by the financial
regulators - enable Flood Re to
operate as a reinsurer.
As part of the package of
measures, the criteria has
been widened to include
further properties that will
be eligible for Flood Re. This
received wide support in
the public consultation and
from the insurance industry,
which has agreed to fund
this without passing costs on

debit card
payments
HMRC has introduced a new
online payment service and
as of 15th December 2014,
will allow taxpayers to pay
their self-assessment or VAT
bill by debit card. This is a
trial and HMRC is working in
partnership with Worldpay.
Taxpayers can continue
to pay HMRC by debit and

Brand spotlight: Electric Motion
Quiet please!
Armitt Leisure Supplies, the UK distributor for the Portuguese brand
of off-road motorcycles, AJP, has been appointed as the importer for
the new Electric Motion EM 5.7 electric trials bike
illed as the first ‘fullsize’ offering in the
ever expanding electric
market, the EM 5.7 is designed
and built by French company
Electric Motion, headed by exScorpa boss Philippe Aresten
and head technician Didier
Richaud. The bike has been
developed with the clubman in
mind, for economy as well as
performance.
The machine is virtually
silent in operation, which
overcomes many of the
objections to motorcycle use
out in the countryside, and it
is equipped with four maps:
novice, standard, trials wet
and trials dry. When in wet
mode, the bike has a soft
power delivery for maximum
traction in slippery and muddy
B
conditions. Dry mode is a full
power setting for climbing
rock steps and similar hard
obstacles and riders can switch
between modes at the flick of a
switch.
Hushed torque
Operated via a single-speed
box, it’s effectively a twist-andgo proposition, and is claimed to
be simplicity itself to ride. With
no clutch to master – relying
instead on subtle throttle use
– it’ll never stall. Full power is
available at any point. Brakes,
suspension and chain final
drive are all conventional items
from the trials world, as are the
wheels and tyres.
The battery gives up to
160 minutes of constant use
and it can be recharged to 80
per cent capacity within 40
minutes – easily enough to
complete a whole event, as it
only uses electricity when the
throttle is open. The battery
is guaranteed for over 800
full charging cycles, so even if
recharged and used every day
for a year, it would take almost
three years for it to get to a point
where it would no longer hold a
full charge – after which point,
according to Electric Motion, it
would retain a 70-80 per cent
charge capacity.
“The EM 5.7 is virtually silent
in operation, which should
help silence the complaints
of those who object to the
noise of trials events”

Feature: History of tyres
Adhering
to
tradition
The motorcycle tyre industry has changed drastically over
the last century, making huge leaps forward in technology
and performance. Bruce Wilson gets a grip on the history
and prospects of the major brands
rom the
earliest days of
motorcycling,
rubber tyres have
been an essential
element in two-wheeled
transportation. Some
larger brands such as
Michelin are able to trace a
heritage that extends back
over a century. Michelin’s
history, like that of so many
successful companies,
is littered with tales of
innovation, commitment
and excitement. It all started
in 1889 when brothers
Andre and Edouard Michelin
had a chance encounter
with a cyclist whose tyre
needed repairing. The rest,
as they say, is history – and
tremendous history at that.
The British subsidiary
of Michelin, the Michelin
Tyre Company Ltd, was
incorporated in the UK
on 11th May 1905. Since
then, the rubber ring giant
has firmly established
itself worldwide, with
72 manufacturing sites
globally, boasting in excess
of 100,000 employees,
F
24 March 2015
and operating in over
170 different countries.
Naturally, Michelin supplies
much more than bike tyres,
but it all began on two
wheels.
Many other tyre brands
have similarly fantastical
origins. Dunlop is one
such example. John Boyd
Dunlop is the man credited
with having created the
first pneumatic tyre, back
in 1888. He pioneered the
idea of gluing rubber sheets
together and inflating the
resulting tube with a football
pump. Seeing the benefits
first-hand on his son’s
specced-up tricycle, JB
Dunlop decided to further
evolve his new creation,
which won deserved praise
when it helped a competitor
win a Belfast bike race.
Fast-forward to present
day: Goodyear Dunlop
Tyres’ Mark Sears explained
to Trader that, aside from
the physical concept,
every other element of
the product has moved
on massively since those
early times. “The goal of
holding and maintaining
air pressure is still the
same, but all other aspects
of tyre production from
manufacturing to moulding,
materials to machines, have
advanced massively,” said
Sears.
Breath of fresh air
The introduction of
pneumatic tyres soon
killed off solid-rubber
tyres, which had been the
norm up until this point. In
a world that was quickly
becoming mechanised
with rapidly growing
numbers of motorcycles
and automobiles, tyre
manufacturing was swiftly
becoming big business on
“John Boyd Dunlop is credited
with having made the first
pneumatic tyre, in 1888”
March 2015 25
Feature: History of tyres
Endurance racing provides the
ultimate testing ground for tyres
“By using synthetic compounds,
Metzeler forged ahead, and in 1937
its tyres helped push up the motorcycle speed record to 174mph”
a global scale.
The primitive
technology
behind the first
pneumatic
tyres was also
advancing.
Cross-ply carcasses
proved a favoured design for
motorcycle tyres for many
decades. The focus of most
tyre manufacturers back
then, as now, was on durability
and performance of the
rubber tread. Whereas most
manufacturers produced tyres
using natural rubber, Metzeler
was the first to make a product
using the synthetic alternative
‘buna’, in 1933. This era was
particularly exciting for the
Bavarian-based company,
which wowed the world again
a few years later, in 1937, by
achieving the motorcycle world
speed record. A Metzeler-shod
machine recorded 279.5kph
(174mph).
Post-World War Two, in
1948, Michelin was back
in the limelight for having
designed, produced and
patented radial-type car tyres.
26 March 2015
This alternative construction
provided better stability, less
friction and improved fuel
economy. But despite the
blatant advantages, the world
of motorcycling would have to
wait over three decades longer
for radials, while making do
with cross-ply and the slightly
better rated bias-belted
products of the time.
Michelin began radial
motorcycle tests in 1981. A
racing programme working
with GP ace Freddie Spencer
fuelled the developments,
achieving its goal in 1984 when
Randy Mamola won a Grand
Prix with Michelin’s new radial
tyres fitted. In 1987, Michelin
unveiled a small range of
road-focused radial tyres for
universal fitment. Even so,
it is Pirelli that is credited as
being the first motorcycle tyre
manufacturer to have crafted
road-going radials, which
came fitted as standard to the
1983 Honda VF1000R. This
period laid the foundations for
motorcycle tyres as we know
them today.
Outside influence
As recent as the Seventies,
European and American
brands dominated the
motorcycle tyre industry. But,
as in motorcycle production,
Japanese tyre manufacturers
soon rose to the fore. Bike
Tyrestore’s (BTS) Peter Smith,
working on the motorcycle
side of his family’s business,
became ever more conscious
of the presence of Bridgestone
Dunlop’s latest
SportSmart 2
in the UK. He noted the rise in
sales of Japanese motorcycles,
most of them supplied with
OE Bridgestone rubber.
Though some customers were
dismissive of the unfamiliarly
branded hoops, others
were more welcoming of the
products.
BTS was not yet a
Bridgestone supplier, but
one particular customer
called Smith and insisted
on purchasing the exact
replacement for the
Bridgestone tyres he was
removing. A few phone
calls later and Smith had
found the tyres he needed,
simultaneously securing BTS’s
position as the new official
UK importer for the tyre
manufacturer.
Though Bridgestone had
had little trouble in securing
a footing in America, in the
UK riders were harder to
convince. Differences in
weather, road conditions and
riding styles necessitated
products specifically crafted
for the European market.
“I spent months driving up
and down the country with
Japanese gentlemen, talking
to bike manufacturers,”
Smith recalls. Eventually the
message got through and
Bridgestone made up a tyre to
suit the European market. The
Battlax hit the UK in the early
Nineties, giving Bridgestone
the opportunity it needed to
seriously make its mark on the
British market.
Brighter future
As regards the present day,
there are seven major players
in the UK motorcycle tyre
industry: Pirelli, Dunlop,
Bridgestone, Michelin,
Continental, Metzeler and
Avon. Recent times have been
tough, owing to the recession
and downturn in new bike
sales, as Sears explained: “Our
market research intelligence
(MRI) data reveals that
consumption has decreased
by 17 per cent over the last
eight years. Going forward,
The latest sportsbike tyres provide
grip that riders of the Nineties
could only dream about
we envisage the market will
increase by around one per
cent over the next four years.”
It might only be a small
glimmer of hope, but this is
no doubt music to the ears
of those in the tyre industry,
having been through so much
turmoil over the past decade.
One man who’s markedly
optimistic is Pirelli/Metzeler’s
Jim Worland. Asked about
the state of his two brand’s
production output, Worland
confirmed that both
companies are producing
more tyres than ever before,
adding: “On a global scale
we are growing massively in
emerging markets, and later in
2015 we will open a state-ofthe-art factory in Indonesia to
support growth in the Asian
markets”.
Worland also provided
insight into the reasons for
Pirelli/Metzeler’s continuing
success on UK soil: “Our
success has come as the result
of the quality and performance
of the products, and by
maintaining a competitive
price. Our route to market and
dealers are also vital to ensure
consumers are well informed
and product is available when
March 2015 27
Feature: History of tyres
they need it.
“Ultimately the product
has to stand out from a very
tough crowd of rivals. We
achieve this by understanding
the consumer’s needs and
investing heavily in research
and development.”
Reflecting on the
technological advancements
of tyres over the past decade,
Worland emphasised the
importance of developments
in performance. “A sporttouring tyre such as the
Angel GT has quick warm-up,
great handling, plus it offers
fantastic dry and wet grip.
We could have only dreamt of
such performance 10 years
ago.
“This product has been
driven by consumer demand,
but also by the UK market
seeing a significant rise in
naked bikes. A true sportsbike
tyre like a Diablo Rosso Corsa
will complement a BMW
S1000RR, but an Angel GT will
be great on a wide variety of
bikes with sports capabilities.”
Good times ahead?
It seems British riders these
Pirelli’s latest sport-touring
tyre is the Angel GT
28 March 2015
days expect more for our
money. And we’re getting it
too. Tyres are lasting longer,
performance is getting better
and, surprisingly, the cost of
such great products hasn’t
significantly increased over
the past 20 years, as Sears
illustrates with an example: “I
On the limit: Michael
Dunlop on the Isle of Man

more than two decades ago:

of Bridgestones in 120/7017 and 180/55-17 profiles
was £219.19. If anything,
contemporary tyres are
performing much better with a
slightly reduced price.”
Singing from the same
hymn-sheet, Worland has a
thoroughly positive take on
contemporary motorcycle
tyres, untainted by nostalgia.
“The value for money
consumers get, certainly
from our tyres, is better than
ever: more grip in cold, dry
and wet conditions; more
mileage; performance lasts
until the final millimetre of
tread; better handling; less
tendency to stand up under
braking mid-corner; faster lap
times with more durability. As
a motorcyclist myself, I can
confidently say we have never
had it so good.” ■
“In 1992, a pair of sportsbike tyres was
about £220. These days, you’re getting
much better performance at a lower price”

Motorcycle Trader brand
retrospective
Ever since John Boyd Dunlop
invented the pneumatic tyre
in 1888, his name has been
synonymous with industryleading technical development
in tyres. A string of milestone
innovations powered the growth
of a global brand that rapidly
became a household name.
It took one more year before
his world-changing invention
achieved its first race win –
actually four wins in a day, by
1889 cycle racer Willie Hume.
Dunlop tyres were on the
bike that won the first 500cc
championship for motorcycles in
1949 and dominated the series
through the following decades.
In 1991 a bike on Dunlop tyres
won the first of three consecutive
World Superbike titles and in
2008 Marco Simoncelli took
Dunlop’s 200th consecutive
250cc GP win, a series in
which Dunlop claimed 17 World
Championships.
The pioneering founder set
the credentials that immediately
established Dunlop as a leading
tyre manufacturer. A continuous
stream of new products
and technologies have been
proved and perfected through
competition, then adopted for
road use. Dunlop’s ever-growing
collection of trophies and awards
is one proud testament to the
success of the policy.
Today, Dunlop is technical
partner of Honda Racing,
Kawasaki and Honda, sole tyre
supplier to Moto2 and Moto3 as
well as Official Tyre Partner of the
Isle of Man TT and Classic TT.
On the road, the latest Dunlop
tyres are fitted on motorcycles
from leading manufacturers such
as Honda, Kawasaki, KTM and
Suzuki.
Motorcycle Trader brand

Michelin has been at the
forefront of tyre innovation since
André and Édouard Michelin
developed the detachable bike
tyre in 1891.
Game-changing
innovations, such as the first
radial tyre for motorcycles, have
been part of the Michelin DNA
ever since.
In 1893, Michelin hired its
first chemical engineer. Today,
the firm employs more than
6,000 scientists and invests
about £500 million a year in
research and development
– more than any other tyre
company in the world.
Every 12 minutes, Michelin
carries out enough test miles to
circumnavigate the globe, and
every new motorbike tyre goes
through hundreds of prototype
stages before it is approved.
The Michelin Total
Performance ethos – that
commitment to constantly push
the boundaries of performance
and rider pleasure – is at the
heart of the manufacturer’s
motorcycle tyre range.
From the benchmark
Michelin Pilot Road 4, available
in sports, touring and trail
versions, and the blisteringly
fast Pilot Power Cup, to
rugged and sure-footed trail
and off-road tyres, Michelin
covers all types of riding,
claiming: “Our commitment to
innovation means our ranges
are compelling to dealer and
rider alike”.
Michelin’s breakthroughs on
track benefit its road tyres, and
its return to Moto GP in 2016
should be the catalyst for many
more developments in the years
to come.

Event review: MCIA data centre launch
Digging through the data
The Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) held a series of talks
and meetings for its members in February, at the Silverstone Circuit.
Headlining the event was the launch of a new statistical service
he new Two Wheel Data
Centre is a benefit that
will provide insight into
the motorcycle market to a
degree never before possible.
It’s being made available
through a partnership between
the MCIA and Vast Visibility,
a software developer that
powers around 80 per cent
of quotes for the motorcycle
insurance market.
Members will get free
access to a ‘look-up tool’
as well as the option to buy
quarterly reports and bespoke
reports on market intelligence
going back four or five years.
The data is based on
800,000 unique quotes, which
are cleansed by postcode. This
means the data associated with
someone who receives nine
or 10 quotes across a number
of comparison sites is only
counted as one person. Data is
live, so constantly updated; it
records whether the customer
already owns the bike or is just
window-shopping, i.e., working
out how much it would cost,
should they be in a position to
buy a particular model. This
allows real-time trends to be
observed; for example, the
Milan debut of Kawasaki’s Ninja
H2 caused a spike in quotes
by shoppers working out how
much it would cost them to
insure this model.
Such online activity allows
manufacturers to identify if
and when they’ve captured the
imagination of the riding public
around a new model launch
timeframe.
Age, occupation, marital
status, previous convictions,
length of riding career, licence
status and information about
the make, model and age of
bike is all available through
the look-up tool, and the
T
information can be broken
down into geographical areas.
All data is anonymous, but the
MCIA expects it will prove to be
“incredibly valuable” for profilebuilding.
“The data is based on
800,000 insurance
quotes, revealing details
on consumers’ interest in
particular models, their
age and circumstances”
“This may challenge what
members have previously
known about their customers
and will certainly help pinpoint
new ones,” explained MCIA
CEO Steve Kenward. “For
example, only 16 per cent
of the insured market is
[aged] over 50. How many
conversations have you heard
which claim that the number
of motorcyclists is dwindling?
While what we perceive as our
core market is largely middleaged, there is a much larger
potential customer base out
there, which has been invisible
up to now, and which we’ve
known little about.”
Interpreting the data
Head of sales for Vast
Visibility, Andy Stevens gave
the example of what could be
gleaned from the free look-up
tool regarding 125cc riders.
He explained: “It would be
possible to separate them
into ‘shoppers’ and those who
already owned a bike. Whether
the bike was used or new,
whether they held a licence
or not, how old they were and
what they did for a living.”
“It is easy to see how
quickly you can start to
identify new markets and work
out how to target them,” added
Kenward.
After the free tool, the next
level of data is a ‘quarterly
report’ which summarises
data for the previous quarter
and compares it to data a
year earlier. The cost for this
is £750 for members, with
bespoke queries available for
an additional fee. Members
can also make the look up tool
available to their own dealers
for free, should they want to.
Non-members
Non-member rates are yet
to be announced, but Steve
Kenward CEO advised that
those who weren’t currently
members might like to think
about joining now and take
advantage of the full gambit of
MCIA benefits.

The service goes live in
April. For non-member rates

Data Centre contact Heather

Company profile: Goodridge
Leading lines
The name Goodridge is synonymous with high-performance steel hoses.
How has the company established itself so resolutely and successfully
in this niche market? Trader finds out
oodridge was founded in 1969
by aviator, racing driver and
engineering entrepreneur Stuart
Goodridge, who sadly died in 2011. He
grew up in Lancashire, and after finishing
school moved to Canada and became a
Formula Ford racer, eventually setting
up his own racing team. Goodridge
began making his own high-performance
braking lines in a bid to achieve greater
racing success. When he moved back to
the UK, aged 23, he continued making
brake lines, in a cottage industry fashion
at first. Interest gradually grew and
the business developed a reputation
throughout Europe. By 1990, the
company also had bases in Japan and
the USA.
The Goodridge brand remains a
towering presence in the braided hose
marked, supplying OE manufacturers,
race teams and of course the aftermarket. The list of applications and fitting
options is enormous and always growing
as the brand continues to forge ahead
in firming up brakes after an incredible
46 years. Here, Trader catches up with
Goodridge marketing coordinator Janis
Effer.
G
Motorcycle Trader: Tell us a little about
the history of Goodridge.
Janis Effer: Formed in 1969, to supply
aircraft braided steel hose and fittings to
the UK F1 motorsport market, Goodridge
has expanded and developed into a
company that provides fluid transfer and
hydraulic solutions around the world.
Rapid response and innovative product
development have placed Goodridge at
the forefront of the industry.
MCT: What is the current size of the
company?
JE: The company manufactures in 10
facilities globally and supplies customers
around the world. Goodridge has a
turnover of over £35m and operates
globally with manufacturing and
distribution operations in the UK, USA,
Mexico and Europe, employing more than
300 people worldwide.
MCT: Which sectors of the market do you
target?
JE: OEM, automotive, motorcycle,
motorsport, defence and specialist
industrial sectors.
MCT: What are the brand’s and the
company’s unique selling points?
JE: A unique combination of design,
innovation, reliability and outstanding
service.
MCT: Do you have any new-for-2015
products?
JE: We are constantly working on new,
exciting products to bring into the
existing Goodridge range
MCT: Is there a programme of
development for new products?
JE: Yes, we have a team dedicated to
the development of Goodridge products
internationally.
MCT: Why might a dealer favour
Goodridge and its products over your
competitors?
JE: As the market-leader for over 45
years, Goodridge has the best brand
in the industry and unrivalled product
quality. This gives our dealers the
confidence to sell Goodridge products
worldwide without the fear of customer
complaints and issues.
MCT: Are dealer margins attractive?
JE: Absolutely. We realise that our
dealers need to achieve a good margin
to make Goodridge a viable product for
them to sell.
MCT: Is there a minimum stocking
requirement?
JE: Yes, we do have stocking
requirements but this is worked out with
the individual dealer. We always work with
our dealers to ensure that we meet their
business needs as well as our own.
MCT: What are the delivery terms?
JE: Very good, and we can adapt these
depending on our dealers’ individual
requirements.
MCT: Does supply always meet demand?
JE: Yes, always. Keeping our customers
happy is vital to our business.
MCT: How does the end-user learn of
your products? Do you advertise to endusers to drive traffic to trade customers?
JE: Last year Goodridge exhibited at
more than 30 trade events worldwide and
spent a substantial amount on targeted
advertising to drive traffic to our dealer
network. Also, Goodridge does not sell
direct to the public, as we do not want to
undermine or take business away from
our dealers.
MCT: How do you use electronic
marketing and social media?
JE: We’re on Twitter as @GoodridgeLTD,
have a Facebook page (www.facebook.
com/GoodridgeLTD), as well as using
YouTube (www.youtube.com/user/
goodridgeltd) and LinkedIn (www.
linkedin.com/company/goodridge).

We have been trading
for over 10 years and now
include the Mad Doctor brand,
hangers with folding LED

many items, especially those
we batch-manufacture. Many

specialist ranges for Triumph
retro-classics assembled
under Jenks Bolts, and we
run the UK importership for
Barracuda as a separate
entity.
MCT: What is current size of

IHJ: The business is based in
Chelmsford, Essex, and is run
by five staff.
MCT: Which brands do you
currently import or distribute?
IHJ: Ermax, LSL, PPTuning,
MadDoctor, Italiana,
Barracuda, and Jenks Bolts,
incorporating MotoTwin.
MCT: Which sectors of the
market are most important
for you?
IHJ: We aim to supply
high-quality, niche market
merchandise to bikers
who wish to upgrade from
manufacturer standard
equipment and personalise
their machine and riding
experience. We supply to
Race Teams, including Virgin,
Doodson and Crescent, and to
custom-builders everywhere.
We also sell spare parts for
many ranges and particularly
for race kit, and we ship
globally.
MCT: Why did you choose
these particular brands?
IHJ: We wished to concentrate
on quality. All our German
products are TUV-approved,
and Ermax plastics are all
wind-tunnel tested, unlike
most home-grown kit, with a
focus on design and improved
functionality rather than highvolume merchandise.
We also prefer ranges
designed well enough that
we can obtain spares, even if
they are not normally listed
and sold. If a customer needs
a bolt, foot-peg end or lever
protector arm only, without
having to buy the whole unit,
we can supply accordingly.

MCT: Are dealer margins
attractive?
IHJ: Dealer margins start low
and increase on volume over
the year.
Custom bikes are
well catered for

IHJ: Much of what we sell is
imported on a sole agency
basis, so we are the key
contact in the UK. A good
percentage of our Jenks
Bolts range is designed and
manufactured in the UK by us.
We aim to supply good service,
and most of our kit can be
supplied with spare parts,
should the rider get overexcited and unintentionally
modify the original, which

rearsets and levers.
MCT: Is there a minimum
stocking requirement?
IHJ: No, but we would suggest
keeping a few spares or, if
displaying kit on a bike, at least
having a set to sell.
MCT: What are the delivery

IHJ: Bespoke plastics are
usually delivered within about
14-20 days; items on the

know their requirements.
MCT: Does supply always
meet demand?

components in our ranges
and there are always new
items coming to market on a
monthly basis.
MCT: How does the end-user

Event review: Putoline Classic Dirt Bike Show
A classic movement
Classic Bike Shows, the event-organising arm of publishing group Mortons Media,
recently acquired the Putoline Classic Dirt Bike Show – and held its first edition of
the show on the weekend of 21-22nd February
elford International
Centre in Shropshire,
the venue for this show,
is impressive, spacious and
easy to find, close to the M54.
It has clean facilities, plenty
of refreshment points, and
ample parking for visitors. For
any visitors not parking within
the venue grounds itself, a
multi-storey carpark opposite
the halls charged a mere £3

The show was busy right
from the off at 9am on Saturday

Its increasing popularity is
perhaps thanks to its relaxed
nature and informality, and this
is an aspect of the show that
the Mortons team says it is
committed to keeping up.
‘Wrighty’ was always going

it off, with traders happy that
the show had retained its

Opinion: Sean Kerr
China’s growing pains
After several years of astronomical growth, China’s bike
industry hit problems in 2008. But why are the brakes
apparently stuck on?
t is universally known that
the Chinese motorcycle
industry has experienced
rapid progress since China’s
‘reform and opening up’
in the Eighties and that
development slowed down
after the global recession hit
in 2008. The decline became
ever more obvious after the
implementation of National III
emission standards in China
in 2011.
Other problems have
restricted the
progress of
the industry,
for example,
the banning/
limiting of
the use of
motorcycles
in Chinese cities. China’s
motorcycle products are (still)
too homogeneous, and there is
competition from the growing
Indian motorcycles industry.
Old-fashioned marketing
methods and slow reform
added to the stagnation.
The availability of cheaper
cars combined with higher
spending power is not helping.
'uring the ¿rst 11 months
of 2014, the accumulated
exports of motorcycles reached
7,791,700 units, down seven
per cent from the previous
year with the export of twowheelers reaching 7,524,400
units, down 8.3 per cent year

I
government expanded the

In many cities, motorcycle
retail is becoming rare.
This decrease of motorcycle

motorcycle manufacturers
to meet projected market
demands. The current annual
motor-tricycle output capacity
is around four million units.
Along with the fast
development of the motortricycle industry, its status has

and Lifan,
Zongshen,
Dayun,
Dayang,
Yinxiang and
others have
increased
their ¿nancial
investments into motor-tricycle

Well-known Chinese
motorcycle enterprises are
also beginning to struggle to
turn a pro¿t. CAAM predicts
that, of the top 20 motorcycle
manufacturers, only seven
companies will enjoy a sales
increase. The remaining 13
companies will sŭer various
drops, some as much as 45 per
cent year on year with top-tier
motorcycle manufacturing
giants sŭering the most.
Increasing raw material
prices and rising labour and
operation costs further ăect
the pro¿ts of motorcycle
manufacturing projects. The
stagnant economic climate has
also greatly ăected import/
export market purchasing

motorcycle sales decline.
All of these factors are
delaying the further expansion
of the Chinese motorcycle
industry and need to be
addressed in 2015. Watch this

Urban bans
The prohibiting and limiting
of the use of motorcycles in
Chinese metropolises is an
old topic but a key factor that
impedes the development
of the Chinese motorcycle
industry. There was no sign
of a lift of the ban in 2014;
conversely, the Chinese
areas is generally weaker,
manufacturers have paid less
attention to quality and more
to reducing prices in an ĕort

hindering progressive research

a negative knock-on ĕect for
the export industry.
Cars and electrics
Multi-industry competition
(car, EV and motorcycle
competition) as well as
improved public transport
services continued to ăect the
Chinese motorcycle industry
in 2014. In the urban centres,
many have chosen to buy
electric bikes and scooters
which the consumers consider

Some suggested positive
remedies. Despite a moderately
encouraging uplift in sales last

by eight per cent since 2009,
something clearly needs to be

Frost, clearly disenchanted

"What was the primary
objection that I faced when

Letting data do
the hard work
The MCIA has access to huge amounts of data that can be
used to promote motorcycling in the media and beyond.
Are you making the most of it?
t’s been a busy few weeks
at the MCIA, with the
introduction of a new
member bene¿t, an ‘insight
data tool’, announced at
Silverstone last month. This
new tool gives members access
to previously unavailable
motorcycle market information
(explained in more detail on
page 29).
At the same event, we also
ran a session for marketing and
PR people. That’s my domain.
The Association has developed
a number of messages to help
promote motorcycling, in
support of its public ăairs
work; these were shared with
members.
Some messages are
obvious but require continual
reinforcement, e.g. commuting
by bike saves time and money.
Others were less well known;
for example, the fact that
motorcycling is
not in decline.
There are now
twice as many
motorcycles,
scooters
and mopeds
licensed for the
road (including those that are
licence-exempt) as there were
20 years ago, with 720,000
licensed in 1994 and 1,354,400
in the last recorded quarter.
Members also heard that
motorcycle fatalities have
fallen by a third in the same
time period, in spite of the
number of riders on the road
having doubled. This would
seem to support the concept
that having more motorcyclists
on the road will result in fewer
casualties, which is explored
in the new policy document,

also reminded of the support
available through membership
of the MCIA.
Facts and ¿gures are often
key to selling in a story, and
the MCIA can help with these.
Typically we are contacted
by agency stă working on
behalf of members who are
looking for something ‘extra’.
They want to see if a PR idea
or ¿gures of their own are
replicated or substantiated
elsewhere independently.
Crunching the numbers
I ran through the procedure
involved in servicing such
requests. Working with
our stats manager Heather
Brown, we search through
MCIA data or government
data we have access to or have
We can also help with
providing quotes. A few
months ago we were contacted
by Radio 1’s Newsbeat to
substantiate a story about
an increase in the number of
younger people riding, as had
been suggested by some of our
manufacturer members. We
were able to use data supplied
by Vast Visibility which showed
the number of insurance
quotes for those aged under
30 had tripled in a ¿ve-year
period.
Issuing a press release
that contains a quote from
the Motorcycle Industry
Association usually allows the
insertion of positive messages
which support the idea that
motorcycling should be
treated as a legitimate mode
of mainstream transport.
Members were told about
the MCIA YouTube Channel,
updated
regularly, and
reminded
to include
the MCIA in
distribution
lists for their
press releases,
so that we can help spread the
news.
Finally, we’re pleased to
announce that the work of
Karen Cole, the MCIA’s safety
and training director, has been
recognised with awards from
the Motorcycle Industry and
the Association of Industrial
Road Safety Ȯcers (AIRSO).
Both awards were billed in
recognition for ‘outstanding’
service to rider safety. Karen
is quite rightly thrilled, and we
are all incredibly proud of her
work.■
“:hen Radio s 1ewsbeat got in
touch, we were able to show them
that the number of under-30s
taking out insurance had tripled”
obtained through a Freedom
of Information request. By
incorporating additional stats
provided by us, a number of
members have secured highvalue coverage.
The MCIA contact centre
helps with compiling surveys
and reports and members
were reminded that they are
entitled to preferential rates,
that all stă working in the
contact centre are experienced
riders and that any revenue
generated goes straight back
into promoting motorcycling.

Kawasaki is playing a waitand-see game to gauge demand
before committing. Which
makes sense commercially…
At £6,099 for the stock
Vulcan S – which includes
ABS, incidentally – Kawasaki
is clearly expecting the
aftermarket items to enhance
its and dealers’ pro¿ts.
This raises another rather
interesting question: why aren’t
other manufacturers following
suit? Time was when the likes
of Rickman and Dunstall
ŏered factory-approved
fairings, luggage, seating and
the rest, often sold through
ȯcial Japanese dealerships. I
can’t think of any good reason
why something similar couldn’t

pro¿ts clearly lie. ■

Clever touches like

its appeal to what Kawasaki
believes is an important
emerging market: A2 licenceholders (there’s a low-powered
version available) and those in
the market for their ¿rst ‘big’

Kawasaki’s really cunning
ploy is to ŏer an extensive
range of aftermarket
accessories with which
punters can customise their
pride and joy. There are three
dĭerent seats, lockable but

Harley-Davidson and BMW

A helping hand
from the taxman?
Death and taxes are certainties, but a new likelihood to throw into
the mix is that HMRC has an online app, scheme or service with
the potency to really help your business. Jason Piper explains
ax has to be paid – that’s
a given. But while most
have only feelings of
dread towards the tax ȯce,
HMRC now ŏers small
businesses a helping hand
with administration and with
tax-reducing programmes,
speci¿cally with record-keeping
and expenses, and a VAT Flat
Rate Scheme. For many small
businesses, the admin burden
of VAT can be a major concern,
but you may be able to reduce
it by operating the Àat-rate
scheme. Instead of having to
match up every receipt and
invoice for VAT, you simply pay
a (reduced) rate of VAT on your
income, which for “retailing
vehicles or fuel” is 6.5 per cent.
You can’t then reclaim any VAT
on your costs (apart from some
major capital investments) but
the reduced rate should take
that into account. Visit bit.

Simplified expenses
If your business turnover is
below the VAT threshold, you
might want to consider the cash
basis for your tax accounting.
Instead of having to prepare
full-scale accruals based
accounts, you simply pay tax
based on what you’ve actually
spent or received. There are a
number of conditions attached,
but if you are the sort of small,
simple business that would
bene¿t from the reduced admin,
you’ll probably qualify.
Alternatively, there is a
‘halfway house’: simpli¿ed
expenses for vehicle and
premises costs which can cut
the burden of maintaining

claim a Àat amount for business

that if you invest in plant or

Can’t pay your tax bill?
Things don’t always go as
planned, and you might ¿nd
that you can’t settle a tax bill
that’s due or expected. HMRC
acknowledges that putting
an otherwise viable business
under just for the sake of a
single tax bill makes no sense.
So if you see trouble ahead, call
the Business Payment Support
Service as soon as possible. This
department may not always
be able to arrange instalments
or deferral – but one thing
you can be sure of is that if
you just ignore HMRC, you
will be treated as though you
deliberately avoided paying tax.

Disagreeing with HMRC
One of the biggest issues
accountants ¿nd with HMRC
disputes is that taxpayers can
end up simply being worn
down. HMRC can seem to have
limitless time and resources
to dig its heels in and wait for
the other side to give in in a
dispute. Traditionally, the only
way out of an impasse is appeal
to the Tribunal, but that can be
a daunting and expensive (or
totally uneconomic) prospect.
However, if you think HMRC
is being unreasonable, you
can in some cases apply for
alternative dispute resolution.

New laws for
online retail
The legal framework regulating online retailing was changed
signi¿cantly last summer. Are you aware of the updates? If not, it’s
high time you got clued-up, as Nigel Miller explains
aving a legally compliant
website is fundamental
to running a successful
e-business. Making errors
not only reduces or destroys
consumer con¿dence in the
business, it can also land a ¿rm
in hot water. Many businesses
are aware that the law in this
area changed recently with the
introduction, on 13th June 2014,
of the Consumer Contracts
(Information, Cancellation and
Additional Charges) Regulations
2013 (CCRs). However, many
businesses have overlooked
H
or ignored the rule-changes,
placing them in a precarious
position.
New rules
The Distance Selling Regulations
2000 were replaced by the CCRs
which apply to contracts made
on or after 13th June 2014.
Traders need to be aware of
the signi¿cant changes in the
law that relate to online sales
(often referred to as “distance
contracts”). The CCRs apply to
contracts for the supply of goods,
services and digital content
between traders and consumers.
For the purposes of the CCRs, a
consumer means “an individual
acting for purposes which are
wholly or mainly outside that
individual’s trade, business, craft
or profession.”
Firstly, the CCRs have
extended the list of pre-contract
information that a trader must
give to a consumer. In essence,
before the consumer commits
to the contract, the trader must
provide information in a clear
and comprehensible manner
detailing who the trader is, what
March 2015 41
Business Journal
the goods are, the price being
charged any other applicable
charges, the terms of the
contract, and the cancellation
right.
Importantly, the trader must
also con¿rm this information
in a “durable medium”, unless
it was already provided as such
before the contract was made.
This con¿rmation must be
provided within a reasonable
time but no later than delivery of
the goods, or commencement of
provision of services. The CCRs
make it clear that a “durable
medium” can include email and
text messages as well as paper.
However, a website link is not a
durable medium, as the content
can change.
It might seem obvious,
but traders must now seek a
consumer’s express agreement
before taking any additional
monies for supplementary
goods and services such as
gift wrap, warranty support,
insurance, express delivery,
etc. This agreement can be
given by ticking an un-ticked
box – pre-ticked boxes are
no longer permitted. Online
traders must also make it very
clear that clicking to proceed
with a transaction will trigger
a payment. This could be done
with a button that says “pay now”
or “order with obligation to pay”
or similar unambiguous method
that indicates that placing an
order entails an obligation to pay.
Consumers will also be
pleased to know that traders
must not make a consumer use
a premium rate telephone line
to contact the trader about an
existing contract. This means
traders may need to have a
separate number for post-sales
enquiries where the pre-sales
enquiry line is a premium
number. Also, traders must
not impose excessive payment
surcharges when consumers pay,
for example, by credit or debit
cards.
“If you don’t specify a
cancellation period, it’s
automatically one year”
otherwise. At the other end
of a transaction, the statutory
cancellation period (also known
as the cooling-ŏ period) has
been extended from seven
working days to 14 calendar
days, so the consumer now has
more time to change their mind.
For supply of goods, the period
starts after the day on which
the goods are delivered. For
supply of services, the period
starts after the day on which the
consumer enters the contract.
Firms can ŏer more favourable
cancellation terms if they wish,
but not less favourable.
The cancellation period is
a good example of why traders
need to comply with the CCRs.
If the trader fails to provide
the required pre-contract
information, the period is
extended to one year. However,
this reverts to 14 days once the
error is recti¿ed and information
provided. Practically speaking,
where a consumer has a right to
cancel, the CCRs require a trader
to provide the consumer (say, by
giving a weblink) with a model
cancellation form in a prescribed
form. Although the trader must
provide the form, the consumer
does not have to use it and can
cancel the contract in another
way (which doesn’t even have to
be in writing). From this point
on, the consumer must return
the goods within 14 calendar
days of cancelling the contract.
The trader must make it clear
in the pre-contract information
that the consumer must pay
for the cost of returning goods
if they cancel. However, the
cancellation right does not apply
to some types of contracts,
such as for supply of bespoke or
customised goods, goods sealed
for health or hygiene reasons
once unsealed, and sealed audio,
video or software once unsealed.
Delivery and cooling-off
The law puts a ¿nite time – 30
days – to deliver goods ordered,
unless a consumer agrees
42 March 2015
paid, including the outbound
delivery charge. One saving grace
for a trader is that they do not
have to reimburse the additional
cost of any premium delivery
option beyond the standard
delivery service ŏered by the
trader. That said, refunds must
be processed within 14 days
of cancellation of the service
contract or receipt of the goods
(or of evidence of the consumer
returning them). The trader can
withhold the refund until the
goods are returned (or evidence
of their return is provided). One
positive change to the law as far
as traders are concerned is that
they can now reduce the amount
refunded where goods show
signs of unreasonable use which
then devalues the goods.
Digital content
The CCRs have introduced
new rules on the cancellation
of contracts for the supply of
digital content not in a tangible
medium, such as CD or DVD.
“Digital content” is broadly
de¿ned and covers software
downloads as well as downloads
and streaming of online games,
music, ¿lms, apps and in-app
purchases across all platforms.
This is the ¿rst time consumer
legislation has dealt speci¿cally
with digital content.
If the trader or a third party
with whom the trader has
an arrangement sells extras,
such as product insurance
or a maintenance contract,
these will be automatically
terminated on cancellation of
the main contract. Where this
ancillary contract is with a third
party, it is for the trader, not the
consumer, to inform the third
party of the cancellation.
To conclude, the CCRs
have introduced a number
of important changes which
impact online retailers. Failure
to comply could lead to breach
of contract claims, complaints,
regulatory scrutiny, wasted
time and costs and negative
publicity.
Refunds
If goods are returned, the trader
must reimburse the total price

The Continental brand is continuing
to go from strength to strength
in the UK, with brand awareness
increasing significantly both on
the road and in the race paddock.
Continental strive to offer a range of
innovative technologies completely
unique to the brand, which not
only meet but actually exceed both
the demands and expectations of
modern riders.
This year will see the
introduction of the new dual
purpose TKC 70 in all key sizes,
further strengthening our class
leading range of adventure sport
tyres. The new TKC 70 is the
ideal tyre for the expanding UK
adventure motorcycle market, and
offers exemplary on road handling,
and genuine off-road performance
for those wanting to go off the
beaten track.
The revolutionary
ContiMove365 all-season scooter
tyre range, which is already
gaining a reputation for all-weather
performance in the scooter scene,
is being expanded to cover a
wider range of machines. The ever
popular ContiMotion range is also
being expanded, providing even
more riders with access to this
premium quality, entry level sport
touring tyre. The ideal choice for
commuters! This year we have also
continued to see a growth in the
bobber and Café Racer segment,
with tyres like the ContiGo! and
TKC 80 proving very popular.
For racers, we will also see
the introduction of the brand new
ContiTrack racing slick, available
in six sizes, and a wide range
of compounds. This will further
complement our range of classic
and road legal race tyres. With
impressive performances in the
Lightweight TT, Manx GP and
across the various UK clubs
including countless wins and
podium finishes across the UK
and Europe in 2014, Continental in
2015 will be a serious force to be
reckoned with.
Cambrian Tyres offer a wide
range of point of sale material,
and provide unrivalled support for
our customers. With a new UK
website due to launch in 2015, we
are continuing to grow the brand
both online and offline, ensuring
maximum exposure to riders across
the UK.
With premium quality products,
competitive prices and a brand
name that people trust, what are
you waiting for? Get in touch with
Cambrian Tyres on 01970 624004

The International Dirt Bike Show
show returns to Stoneleigh Park in
Warwickshire this autumn and will
run from Thursday 29th October
until Sunday 1st November 2015.
There are a number of reasons
why the International Dirt Bike
Show returns to the same facility in
the heart of the UK. These include;
ease of access, plentiful and free
parking for exhibitors and visitors,
and a team of exhibition specialists,
happy to work with the show
organisers and stand holders.
Stand space will go on general
sale in spring 2015 and prime sites
tend to sell out quickly. Interested
exhibitors are encouraged to book
early to avoid disappointment.

A comparatively new name in the
UK, launching last year with a range
of quality scooters and motorcycles
sourced from the Far East. Its sister
company, Quadzilla, has been a
leading light in the quad market for
more than ten years, easily topping
the road legal quad market and,
more recently, moving successfully
into the utility and work quad
markets.
On the scooter front, the range
now boasts three 50cc, three
125cc and a 249cc maxi model,
with trade prices starting from
£749.17 plus VAT. These have
recently been joined by the SM50, a
50cc supermoto styled two-stroke
with a manual six-speed gearbox,
and a trio of 125s; the WK Spirit,
Trail and Sport.
Healthy dealer margins are
available in the region of 30 per
cent. Machines and parts are
available on next-day delivery and
all machines carry an unlimited
mileage, 12-month parts and labour
warranty.

Quality replacement parts for the
motorcycle trade. WMD stocks an
extensive selection of parts and
accessories and, in many cases
one part will fit a multitude of
different marques.
WMD was recently appointed
as the official UK distributor for Devil
Exhausts. The premium quality
French high-performance exhaust
manufacturer has been dominant
in its home market for many years
and is now aiming to repeat that
success in the UK through the
Sussex-based operator.
