Despite the there has been limited study on how effective the various aspects of an employee that are considered when promoting him/her. This research will try to establish if these aspects are effective while applying promotion procedures and systems. The main purpose of this study was to find out the used in the Kenyan parastatals, effectiveness of promotion criteria a case study of K.P.L.C Nairobi. The specific objectives were: to find out whether effectiveness in personal performance is a criterion used when promoting the employees, to determine the indicators of leadership potential during promotion, to establish if length of service is a major consideration promotion in the organization and to find out if continuous in an employee when carrying out growth in terms of training and development in an employee during promotion consideration. The study was conducted using descriptive survey design. The target population was 120 respondents. This consisted of employees as follows: 30 from the marketing department, from the administration, 30 from the planning department 30 and 30 from the human resource department. A sample size of96 was derived from this population. The sample procedure was conducted through simple random sampling and stratified random sampling. Questionnaires were administered for data collection from the respondents and a pilot study was conducted to validate them. The data from this study was analyzed by the use of scientific packages for social scientists (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel. Data was presented by using tables,bar graphs and pie charts. The findings of this study will contribute to the improvement organizations.
