Member Spotlight
13 and Preslee 7. Preston is a senior
at Clarksville High School. Taylor is
going into the eighth grade at Richview
Middle School and our youngest Preslee
is starting second grade at Moore
Magnet School. All of which are active
in sports and school clubs.
What is your full name?
James Lawrence Albertia Jr. (Jay)
What is your profession?
Executive Director of Progressive
Directions Inc. – A Regional Intellectual
Disabilities Agency
Where did you go to school and what did you
study?
Graduated from Clarksville High School
and Austin Peay State University,
Masters and Bachelor’s Degrees in
Communication and Business
Why did you choose your current profession?
There are a lot of good reasons I chose
this field. First and for most I was
always been taught you gave back to the
community that gives to you. Secondly,
my cousin Joedee Parker, who was the
same age as me, she was born with an
intellectual disability. Because of her
limitations I always believed I was going
to work twice as hard and experience
life twice as much for both of us.
Where are you from originally?
I was born in Norfolk, Virginia.
How long have you been in Clarksville and
what brought you here?
My family moved to Clarksville when
I was 4 years old. My family has now
been in Montgomery County for six
generations. We moved home.
Tell us about your family.
My wife Gena graduated from
Clarksville High and APSU is a school
psychologist at Moore Magnet School
and Cumberland Heights Elementary. I
have three children; Preston 17, Taylor
What do you like most about Clarksville?
So many things … I love the history
of Clarksville and watching how it has
developed over the years. The diversity
and comradery of the community
that makes Clarksville a major city
with a small town feel. Austin Peay
State University and school system
are amazing. Fort Campbell and our
military continues to bring pride to
our city and the nation. The expansion
of new industries such as Google and
Hankook, along with the proximity to
other major cities makes Clarksville the
ideal city to live and work.
If you could have any other profession what
would it be?
I would be a teacher. I have had the
opportunity to adjunct teach at Austin
Peay and love the interaction with
students and see them light up when
they understand a new concept and the
education experience becomes exciting
for them.
What is your favorite meal?
Having Italian roots, I’m definitely
fond of traditional meals like spaghetti,
lasagna, and especially my wife’s
homemade manicotti!
What is the easiest and most difficult part of
your job every day?
Working with those we serve is the
easiest part of my day. Being able to
work with them and seeing how they
overcome so much and knowing I am
a part of that, is life changing. The
hardest part is knowing there are so
many individuals who do not receive
services because of lack of funding.
What’s your favorite movie or TV show?
Gone with the Wind. I have deep roots in
the south and love history. But, it also
shows that even through tragedy of life
and with different ideas our country can
July • August 2016/6
Jay Albertia
overcome and better itself. It is about
growth both personal and that of the
country.
Who is your role model?
I have always been a big fan of Thomas
Jefferson. But, Jesus and my faith play a
big part of my life. He always loved and
served others, this is what we should all
strive to do.
What has been the toughest challenge you’ve
had to overcome in your life?
The realization that you can’t fix
everything that you would like to fix.
Working in the not-for-profit field you
see so many people hurting and in need.
You would like to help everyone and
help them solve their problems.
When and to where was your last vacation?
Last year I was honored to serve as the
International President of Civitan. With
that, last summer our family was blessed
to travel to Japan, Korea, Canada,
Norway, Sweden, and Estonia on behalf
of the organization.
What is your favorite pastime or hobby?
I am a true history buff, when my family
and I go on vacations we love to travel to
different historical sights. We are in the
process of trying to visit all the National
Parks.
What advice can you give others juggling a
family and career?
I think the best advice is to remember
time is a balancing act. Your priorities
speak a great deal about yourself so you
have to stay focused on what you are
doing and make the most of each and
every day.
What is something most Clarksvillians
wouldn’t know about you?
I am shy by nature, but my passion for
life and issues mask it.
If you could leave one message to the
Clarksville community what would it be?
Love one another, be kind to those
you see in the store or around the
community, embrace our diversity,
celebrate our community successes, and
show appreciation for our military at all
times!

The Industrial Development Board (IDB) hosted its sixth annual “Red

The event, scheduled around the Nashville-based CMT Awards

“The annual Red Carpet event has proven to be one of the most effective
ways our team at the IDB can engage consultants who may not be familiar
with the available resources in our community,” said IDB Executive Director
Mike Evans. “It also serves as a unique way to say ‘thank you’ by including
