Message from KMES
Principal
Dear Kings Mountain School
families,
January 19th marked the 90th
day of school, the halfway
mark of the school year. Our
fall focus was on reading, a
foundational skill for academic
success. Whether an
emergent reader, independent,
or fluent reader, students
learned to think deeply about
text, exploring characters,
themes, and authors’ craft.
The important work of reading
is ongoing. As teachers fully
implement Common Core
Standards, we will be shifting
our attention to the deeper
thinking children are using to
engage in math.
Common Core State
Standards can be thought of
as the ‘what’ students should
be learning. The changes in
the CCS math standards
reflect a greater understanding
of developmentally where
students are at each grade.
The CCS math standards still
expect students to use
operations to solve problems,
add, subtract, etc. Students
are now also expected to
represent their understanding
with models.
The biggest and most
exciting change in math, is
the Standards for
Mathematical Practice. They
are ‘how’ children should be
learning. There are Eight
Mathematical Practices that
apply to all grades, K-12.
These practices help our
students develop a
mathematical mindset,
becoming problem solvers
who see math in the world
around them. This is the Ican puzzle-it-out perspective
that is essential in all
investigative work, whether
diagnosing a car, computer
or medical problem.
Over the next eight weeks,
we will be exploring and
explaining a Math Practice in
the weekly newsletters. At
our morning Math
Celebration on March 2nd, I
invite you to join me before
visiting your children’s
classrooms for a math talk
about standards and practice.

brainstormed gravity, made
tornadoes, studied vortex
and discovered water doesn’t
easily change bottles without
it spinning like a tornado.

KMCC Dates to Note
KMCC follows the District
calendar and will be
closed for the upcoming
President’s Week, as well
as Friday, March 25.
Upcoming Minimum Days
are February 23 and
March 15, where we will
be open at the 12:45pm
dismissal time until closing
at 6:00pm.
KMCC holds Homework Club
for forty minutes, Mondays
through Thursdays. We are
moving our start and stop
times slightly to better
accommodate our students.
Homework Club will begin at
2:30pm and end at 3:10pm.
Homework Club is free is
those attending KMCC and
offers first through fifth graders
a chance to complete
homework. While it is not a
tutoring session, we will help
students when they have
questions and we strive to
keep kids on track and to use
their study time wisely.

bikes and skateboards, much
to the kids’ delight. Last week
was spent painting our own
hot cocoa mugs for our Art
Tree, complete with cotton
balls as marshmallows. Of
course, we had to have a real
cup of hot cocoa topped with
marshmallows after all that
painting! Soon, we will begin
working on self-portraits,
using charcoal pencils and
mirrors. Should be interesting
to see how the students see
themselves.
T’was a Season of Merriment!
Though a short school month,
December was a lot of fun at
KMCC! Our Art Tree glistened
with snowflake creations and
KMCC kids loved making foam
tree ornaments to take home.
We weren’t afraid to get
outside in the cold and it’s safe
to say Broom Ball is still a
favorite sport at KMCC!
Coloring Contest prizes were
awarded at our Holiday Party,
where we enjoyed word
searches, decorating wreath
cookies, and watching The
Polar Express.
The New Year brings new
activities to KMCC—we are

February Is International
Discovery Month!
After creating self-portraits at
the end of January, KMCC
kids will spend February
finding out a bit more about
themselves. We will celebrate
International Discovery
Month and feature art
projects and food from
around the world. Kids will
get to study countries where
their ancestors are from and
see what makes them who
they are today. Special
cooking from the Middle East,
the Philippines, and France
will be featured during our
Tuesday cooking sessions.

School Site Council
All are welcome to attend

Council meeting on
Wednesday, February 3,
2016 2:15 pm – 3:45 pm.
During this meeting we will
review the LCAP (Local
Control and Accountability
Plan) and get an update of
our SPSA
(Single Plan for Student
Achievement Plan). We
will discuss the new math
benchmark
assessments: MARS/MAC
tasks and our upcoming
Math Celebration. Staff will
provide an update of the
approved $14K purchases
made with the $50K Art
Fair grant and we
will determine how we will
spend an additional $8 -
11K this year for our kids.
Parents' input and participation
are always appreciated.

Tell us a little bit about
yourself and what did you
do before you came to KM?
Before I came to Kings
Mountain, I was a teacher,
which I've known I've wanted
to do since second grade.
Most of my career was in
Redwood City, but I've also
taught locally at Wilkinson, El
Granada, and Sea Crest.
What do you enjoy about
KM?
I love the small, family
atmosphere at Kings
Mountain, and the remote
location up in the forest... it
feels like another world.
What is your hidden talent?
I'm a writer and an artist and
love yoga.
What is your favorite sport
and why?
I love to ski, bike ride, and hike
the best, probably because I
only have to compete with
myself. I also love to roller
skate and jump rope.

Akshaya: Once I did a snowball
fight and the only way to get to the
top of the mountain was to ride in a
thing that slides across a wire but
don’t look back, ‘cause when you
are up so high, it can be scary and
there is a restaurant at the top of
the mountain. It is really relaxing
and warm and outside it is really
chilly and cold and some people
were even skiing. I thought it
looked like fun and I asked my
mom, “When can I go skiing? She
said, “Maybe another day,” but I
really wanted to go skiing but I can
wait.
Lucas H.: An excited moment was
when I got the Police Lego set. We
drove home. I played with it.
Madeline: A long time ago me and
my sister, my mom and one of our
neighbors, we all went to go watch
real alive ballet. It was not a
movie. The ballet players were on
stage. It took a long time, but we
all sat through it and then it was
break time so we went out. Me and
my sister got a giant chocolate chip
cookie. Me and my sister didn’t
need to split it even though the
cookie was so big. I don’t know
where it really was.
Sola: I went to Tahoe to ski. We
had the fanciest hotel in the world
for one night. I went down Sugar
and Spice.
Tessa: My brother punched me.
Ozzie: I watched the good
Dinosaur. It scared me.
Sophie: When my sister and
my mom and me were at a
sleepover, we watched a movie
and ate cookies.
Naomi: Once I was at my
house and my sister was
making faces at me. Ants,
aghh.
Lucas A: When I went to the
forest, I saw a black bear in real
life. It took place in Tahoe. I
was taking pictures and then a
bear appeared. I accidentally
took a picture and I thought my
dad would get mad but he was
happy for me. I was happy for
myself. I got scared of the bear
but after I felt better. I told my
mom and grandma that I saw a
wild bear in the forest today at
morning to noon. I had fun –
today was the best day ever in
my life.
Nicholas: One day my sister
watched Winnie the Pooh and I
wanted to watch Winnie the
Pooh.
Ava: Me and my sister watched
a movie. It was called
Madagascar. I am having fun!
Leon: Once I was riding my
bike. Went up a big, big, big
hill. I went down the big, big,
big hill. I crashed and I fell! I
was crying! This is fun.
Waaaa.
Caitlyn: My sister wanted the
jungle train. I said, “I had it
first.” She said, “Mine.” Every
time she throws a fit.
Conor: One Christmas I played
with Emma. My grandma and
grandpa slept over. It was fun.
My sister had a fun Christmas.
Luke: I was running and I falled
and I called Mom and Dad.
Kaylani: One sunset, my big
brother had an idea. I was
running on the treadmill. My big
brother told us, he said, “We
were going to go on a
motorcycle ride and we’re going on a
picnic.” I was excited. I was the first
to go. I had fun and we went on the
picnic. I had so much fun. I liked it.
I was going to go again tomorrow.
Anya: I have two little cousins,
Carson and Tessa. They are twins
and they were turning one. My sister
was taking a nap in the car. When
she woke up, my mom got her up
and brang her out and said, “We’re
at the party now.” When we saw
them eat their cupcakes, it was
soooo messy. After we ate cookies
and we drank juice. And then we did
limbo. I could do it at the lowest
levels even. Then we went in the
pool. It was a pool party.
Fiona: One time when it was in the
morning, my brother took three bites
of each banana bread piece and
said, “I did not do it.” But, I said, “He
did do it,” and I started to cry. He ran
away up into car and left for school
and we were almost late.
Devin: I was playing tag and I ran
soo fast that I fell on my back and
now my back is wet with tanbark. It
feels like I am sweating. I even fell
on my face and I got up and kept on
playing and then boys were ‘it’.
Then, Madeline tagged me and I
tagged her back and she couldn’t tag
me back. I was on base and I got off
base and a girl tagged me and I fell
on my back and all the girls tagged
me and I got up and played again. I
was tired of playing tag and I was on
the base talking with Naomi and the
bell rang and I wrote about it all and I
had fun playing. It was girls – what a
fun game!

My new Year's Resolutions are
to learn Spanish
to learn Portuguese
to learn Chinese
to learn Latin
to learn Greek
to learn Russian
to learn French
to learn Japanese
I plan on taking online language
classes. I am going to juggle two or

three at a time. It is like reading.
You always should have an extra
one on hand if you finish the first
one.
I want to get my mom to make me
better lunches. I will ask her to put
in what I want.
I want to improve my archery skills
by going into the big parking lot
near my house and shooting my
bow.
2016 New year Resolutions

My Three Resolutions for this year
are to grow my hair, clean my room
more often, and to get better in
soccer.
To grow my hair, I will only get
haircuts for my bangs for a month
or so.
To clean my room, I will clean
every night before bed if it is dirty.
To get better in soccer, I will play in
the Spring and Autumn and
practice with my sister.
My New Year's Resolutions

#1. I want to be better at reading by
having a better level on Raz-Kids. I
will do one book a day. I will also
read everyday for thirty minutes.
#2. I would like to have better
writing and to write in cursive by
having help by my Mom or Dad.
#3. I want to be good to my pets.
My pets are my cat and three dogs,
Snickers, Aspen, Mongo, and
Beans. I will not chase my
Chihuahua Beans or my cat
Snickers.
My New Year’s Resolutions for
2016

My resolutions are going to be both
a little hard and a little easy. Here
are my resolutions:
To do a little bit of yoga
everyday before school with
Jean because she does yoga
and knows a lot about it. A lot! I
will try to take yoga classes and
complete the class by the end of
third grade.
To take gymnastic lessons and
in the gym learn to do a perfect
cartwheel and handstand. I am
really terrible at handstands and
cartwheels.
To learn the Hindi language
(which is Indian). That is my
mother’s language so she will
teach it to me.

2nd Step Story Peer Pressure

One day, Anna was talking
about a big math test with her
friend, Jessica.
“I can’t believe our teacher
is making us take this test! No
other class has to. It’s not fair,”
Anna said. Their friend Annika was
nearby, and she heard them
complain.
“I don’t get it either,” she said.
“But I have an idea that will blow
your minds.” She smiled.
“What is it?” Jessica and Anna
said in unison.
“The idea is,” Annika replied,
“We sneak into the teacher’s office
after school. We’ll hack into his
computer. Then we get the
answers to the test. Then we leave.
I already have the key.” She held
the stolen key in her hand. Anna
looked at Jessica.
“This sounds fun, and
easy.” Jessica grinned.
Anna looked at them both. “I
don’t know guys, this sounds
risky and not right…” She said.
“Why not? It’s the only
way we can get the answers
without actually doing the work.”
Annika said. Jessica nodded,
agreeing with Annika. Anna
looked at them both. She didn’t
know what to say, or do to stop
them, and not be laughed at.
“It’s ok, Anna,” Annika
laughed. “I’ve done it before a
lot. How do you think I get such
good grades?”
Anna thought for a moment to
get out of this. “How about we
just do the work? We could work
in a group so it would go by
faster.” Anna said.
“Anna, why do you want
to do the work? It will be faster
to just hack into the teacher’s
computer then do the work!”
Annika said. Anna looked at
Jessica for help, but she
shrugged.
“Sounds like a good
idea to me.” Jessica told her.
That day after school, Annika,
Jessica, and Anna walked to the
teacher’s office when all the
teachers were talking in the
other room.
“This isn’t right, I’m going to just
go home and study for
tomorrow.” Anna said, and
started to walk back to the
street.
Annika grabbed her. “Please?”
She begged.
Anna stared at her, then took a
deep breath and calmed down.
“Guys, this isn’t right.”
Annika looked at Jessica.
“We should do the work
instead.” Anna said.
“I guess you’re right, we’ll get in
trouble… and we would get
caught, and not learn anything.”
Jessica said.
“Yeah…” Annika said, ashamed
she thought of this.
“Hey, how about we work on it
at my house?” Anna said.
“Sure!” Jessica and Annika said
together. They all walked to
Anna’s house and studied for the
test.
The next day, they looked at their
scores. Anna read hers, and saw an
A+, followed along by Jessica and
Annika, also A+’s.

At Queen’s Valley middle
school there was a guy called Bobby
who was good at math but nobody
really liked him since let's just say he
sometimes bragged, but he didn't try
to fix his problems since he thought
he was perfect because he got an
A+ on every single test and everyone
was really mad. But one day when
Bobby went to Big Joe's Pizza to get
a snack he was cornered by some
Bullies during lunch and they tried to
persuade him to let them copy him
on the next test.
“Listen Bobby the brain, I will
give you a lollipop if you let us “work”
with you.” said Melvin the meanie.
“No thank you… and by the
way, just call me Bobby,” Bobby
answered simply.
“Well that did not work Melvin
whispered his group of bullies.
“All right then if you don’t help us I
will tell everyone in the school you
have a crush on sassy Soozy.”
Melvin said
“Ok, you do that. Bobby said looking
at the pizza. He was starting to feel
pressure.
Bozo the bully then stepped up and
shook his fist at bobby,
“I’m going to knock you into next
wednesday if you don’t let us “work”
with you.
“Guys,” bobby said looking up from
his pizza
“I think that the test won’t be as hard
as you think.”
“Oh is that so bobby? IS THAT SO?
Bozo yelled punching table in rage.

Then Sam came around
into the ally saying “ Hey dude how
ya doing? Can you pass the
cigarettes dude.”
“ Sure man it’s not like it’s
illegal to smoke when your 12.”

“ Heeey gu gu gu guys I read in
a book that if if you want to to
smoke a cigarette that you're
supposed to be 18 teen.”

“ Dude why is your head
always in books you just smoke a
cigarette.” said Kevin
“ Ya dude, just smoke at
least one.” Agreed Sam
“ What should I dooo!!! He
said he would hurt me in any way!!
Ok I need too calm down.”

“ Heeeey guuuys I don’t think
you should be doing this because,
you can get cancer, go to jail, get a
hole in your neck, die buy lung
cancer, being high and kill yourself
or your teeth falling out.” said
George
“ Yaaa your right I don’t
what to die by being high .” said

Once upon a time there was a
5th grader named James. He was
walking home with his Sister Mia.
While they were walking home they
saw a guy from school. The kid was
named Sky. Sky was James’s
friend. Sky was holding something
behind his back. James asked Sky,
“ Hey bro. What is behind your
back?”
“The best thing in the world,” Sky
replied. “A kitten!”
“Cool bro!” James said, “Can me
and my sister Mia have one?”
“Sure dude!” Sky said with an
excited look as he handed them
both a kitten, “Here you go.”
“No!” Mia said, “This is so bad
and kittens are not good for you
and I am only a fourth grader!”
“You are right,” James said.
“We should not get addicted.”
“Ya your right dude,” Sky said
as he threw his kitten in the
garbage.
“Let’s go,” Mia said.

Hi. My name is bob, and
right now I’m in a bad situation.
My friends found out that my
high school brother has
cigarettes, and they want to
steal some, so here's what
happened.
“Come on dude!” said Jim
“It will be cool! We will be super
popular!” said Bob's other
friend.
“We’re just going to get a
couple!” said Jim
“No. I do not want to smoke!”
said Bob
“Oh it’s okay! Your brother is
smoking so we can do it too!”
said Bob’s other friend.

Okay, I need to calm down. I’m
frustrated. The problem is that
my friends are trying to steal
cigarettes. Maybe I can try to
convince them that smoking is
nasty and bad for you. But if I
do, then they might not hang out
with me. Okay I know what to
do…
“Guys, smoking is really bad for
you and nasty. It’s a really
expensive habit. It’s not even
worth it.” said Bob
“Okay, if it’s bad then, we
won’t.” said Jim

answer Mia?,” my friend
Martha demanded. She
was pressuring me on
HER homework! I did
not want to do her
homework! But she said
that she would make up
rumors about me if I didn’t do
her homework.
“So do you want me
to start the rumor that you
pick your nose and eat
them!,” Martha said getting
impatient for Mia’s answer.
“ Stop Mia. Calm
down. Use deep breaths.
Count.,”Mia said in her head
and started to calm down
from being too nervous. Mia
responded.
“I don’t know
why are you doing this but
this is wrong Martha. I don’t
care if you start rumors
about me at least I know I’m
doing the right thing !That is
not true and people might
not believe you!,” Mia said
with courage and walked
away with smile
Peer Pressure

My name is Lucy. There was a
new kid at school named Bob and
my friend, Annie, made me bet. She
said that if I didn’t make the new
kid’s first day’s hard and lonely, she
wouldn’t be my friend anymore. I
didn’t want to do it but I also didn’t
want to lose my best friend. At first, I
didn’t know what to do, and I was
worried that I could lose my best
friend, and confused because I had
no idea how i was going to make the
new kid’s first few days hard, and
also mad that Annie even wanted to
do this, I had to calm down. At first I
wanted to just run away and hide in
the bushes. But I started to take
deep breaths and calmed down. then
I said assertively “No. We can’t do it.”
Annie stared at me like I was
insane! Well, I personally don’t
blame her because I always agree
with her, but I knew this wasn't right.
“Think of how you’d feel if it was your
first day at school and someone tried
to be mean to you” I said.
Annie thought about this for
a moment then said, “I guess you're
right. Let’s go talk to him a make him
feel welcome a comfortable.”
We agreed on it and went to
talk with Bob. “Hi! Your Bob, right?”
said Annie, “My name is Annie and
this is Lucy. Let me and Lucy show
you around the school.” She said.

Peer Pressure

My name is Jack, let me
tell you a story of how I dealt with
peer pressure.
“Look at his paper, write
down the answer,” my friend,
Jimmy, said.
“Come on it’s not that big of
a deal,” I said.
“I don’t care what you think
just do it,” Jimmy said. I felt
nervous at first because I didn’t
know what to do. I knew cheating
wasn’t right, but I was nervous that
I would lose my friendship.
“I think you should care,
cheating’s not right” I said.
“Well I don’t ca…,” I
stopped him and said,
“Stop I don’t want to do it,” I
said. After I said that Jimmy rolled
his eyes at me and groaned. I went
to the bathroom to calm myself
down and felt proud of myself for
saying no about cheating.

“C’mon, c’mon,” said Colin, “This
site is really boring, it’s laggy and is
telling me to do 2nd grade
problems like, 1×15.”
“Well, you have to do it. It’s said
to work up to our-level math
problems, and it’s our computer
usage is monitored by the
principal,” I said.
“Fine.”
We kept playing. After about an
hour, he was still on ‘2nd grade
problems like, 1×15’ and I was still
reading books for the 1st grade
books.
“Man, I wish we could play Tetris
‘d,” said Colin.
He googled it, but little words fell
all over the screen and a little G
was at the bottom of the page.
“Fine! I’m using Bing,” said Colin.
He boinged (or is it binged?)
Tetris ‘d and clicked on the first link.
“IT’S BLOCKED?” said
Colin, outraged.
“What do you think? It’s
blocked because it’s a game
that apparently doesn't improve
your education at all.”
“Hey,” said Colin, hitting
(shift+command+c) on his Mac,
“Can you help me reprogram
this webpage? I’m a novice,
you’re the nerd.”
I don’t know what to
say. I know hacking a school
computer is bad, but I’m afraid
that if I say No, he’ll make fun of
me. But if someone finds out,
they’re going to get angry at me
because I didn’t stop him. And
th--STOP. I’m getting overfreaked out. Let’s do this and
stop Colin from hacking the
district computers.
Giving him a piercing
look, I say, “Stop Colin, what if
you get caught? I’ve heard of a
kid who got cornered by
congress for hacking a
computer into top secret
government secrets.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re
right,” said Colin.

INTRADISTRICT OPEN
ENROLLMENT
The Cabrillo Unified School
District has a policy that allows
parents to request that their
child attend a school outside of
their school of residence.
Enrollment is contingent within
procedures of Board Policy and
Regulations 5116.1.
Children including siblings
interested in attending a school
other than their home school,
must register at their home
school and fill out an Intradistrict
Open Enrollment Application at
the time of registration. There is
no need to complete a form if
your child is already on Open
Enrollment.
The following dates note intradistrict
timelines: Sibling Open Enrollment
Deadline, January 28, 2016, Sibling
Lottery, January 29, 2016, Open
Enrollment Deadline, April 28, 2016
and Open Enrollment Lottery, April
29, 2016.
SCHOOL OF CHOICE – HATCH
IMMERSION PROGRAM
Children including siblings interested
in the Spanish Immersion Program
must register at their home school
and fill out a School of Choice
Application. The Immersion
Registration Deadline is on March
31, 2016. The Immersion Lottery will
be held on April 1, 2016 (if
necessary.)
