On April 16th, the Arizona Educational Foundation announced their
list of A+ Schools of Excellence for the 2009-2010 school year.
Mountain Pointe High School is proud to be on the list and becomes
the first Tempe Union High School District school to earn
the honor. Since 1983, there are only 24 high schools in the state to
receive the A+ rating. The A+ Program celebrates education and brings
to light the positive stories and successes happening in public schools
every day.
How Does It Work?
Schools throughout Arizona submit applications that provide demographic information, a description of current
programs and practices, documentation of parent and community involvement, a profile of the school principal
and his/her vision of the commitment to excellence, equity, service, and sustained high achievement or significant
improvement in assessment. Based on the applications, finalists are announced and receive school visits in March
and April. A select panel of 5 judges conducted Mountain Pointe’s site visit over 2 days visiting every classroom
on our campus. The winning schools are recognized for their superior ability to meet the needs of their student
populations.
What Are The Rewards?
Recognition itself is a powerful energizer for increasing public confidence in recognized schools, generating higher
local funding and creating greater parent and community involvement. The A+ process allows schools to identify
and solve problems, generate new support from the community and business partners, increase student and parent
pride, validate school programs and accomplishments, and
re-energize the staff, students, and parents.
Schools designated as A+ retain their status for a 3-year
period.
Each school receives $500 and a banner designating it as
an A+ School. All staff and faculty at 2010 A+ Schools will
be eligible for partial scholarships from Argosy University/
Phoenix: 20% for a Master’s degree and 15% for both
Undergraduate and Doctoral degrees.

We are well into the 4th quarter of the school year and rapidly moving towards graduation
for the class of 2010. This is always an exciting time of the year. Nothing could be more
exciting to our community then the selection of Mountain Pointe High School as an
Arizona A+ School of Excellence. This award reflects the strength of the whole Pride
community: our students, staff, parents and community stakeholders. The A+ award brings
our school statewide recognition for our achievements in academics, arts, athletics, and
activities. We are proud to call ourselves an A+ School of Excellence and we are also committed to continue our emphasis on school improvement and sustaining high achievement
for all Pride students.
As we prepare to celebrate the accomplishments of the class of 2010 we also are working on welcoming the class of 2014 to the Pride
family. As one group of students and parents transition to the next phase of life, a new group of students and families are anxiously awaiting the arrival of high school. We know and understand what a difficult transition students and families undergo as they move from middle
school to high school. Because of that I am excited about a new program we are starting at Mountain Pointe.
On August 5th and 6th, the Thursday and Friday before official classes start, we will be having our first Freshmen Boot Camp. From
8:00 am-1:00 pm on both days all freshmen students are expected to attend to begin their high school experience. We have 25 teachers
that have volunteered to participate along with several dozen upper class students to serve as mentors. The design of this program is to
help all incoming freshmen students get acclimated to Mountain Pointe High School in a much quicker and effective way so each and every
student can experience success from the start.
This has been another great year for Mountain Pointe High School students and staff. To date, we are aware of $1,000,000 in merit
based scholarship money being earned by our students to the three in-state universities.This does not include other scholarship monies
that will be offered for various other reasons and to our-of-state universities and colleges. (The latest overall scholarship total is just over
$8,500,000.) Holly Phillips is a semi-finalist for the Scholar Athlete of the Year, sponsored by the “Milk Mustache” dairy program.
Justin Gonzales was awarded the National Hispanic Scholarship to Arizona State University. Kevin Beck received the Arizona
Band & Orchestra Directors Association state music scholarship. Mountain Pointe High School is also proud to announce that
two students are National Merit Finalists, Jesse Ai and Kenneth Do. Congratulations to Chloe Cole, who was awarded a $22,000
scholarship to Boston University.
Athletically, we have had a ground-breaking year. While many schools lamented the realignment Mountain Pointe took advantage of the
opportunity and has exceeded beyond everyone’s expectations, except ours! This year the following teams have won region titles; football,
girls volleyball, boys golf, girls golf, boys basketball, girls basketball, boys swimming, girls swimming, boys soccer, girls soccer. All of these
teams advanced to state competition and placed very well. Spring sports are still in regular season competition so more could be added.
With this success have come many opportunities for our athletes to continue their education and sports careers in college. To date I am
aware of the following students who have received scholarships; Josh Alexander (University of Utah)-Baseball, Gabby Johnson (ChandlerGilbert)-Basketball, Shanice Henderson (Chandler-Gilbert)-Basketball, Arielle Cano (Phoenix College)-Softball, Ben Demarr (Air Force
Academy)-Football, Alex Lewis (University of Colorado)-Football, Davon Jones (Glendale CC)-Football, John Mora (Eastern Arizona)-Football,
Joey Leal (Adams State)-Football, DeAndre Currie (Adams State)-Football, Jeremy Espindola (Glendale CC)-Football, Tyler Sherman
(Eastern Arizona)-Football, Ben Shook (Eastern Arizona)-Football, OJ Quinones (Scottsdale CC)-Football.
In addition to the student accolades this year, Mr. KR Scott was recognized by the Arizona Education Foundation as one of the top 10
teachers in Arizona. Our talented music, theater, dance and visual arts teachers were honored by the Mayor and Arizona Alliance for Arts
Education with two awards for Outstanding Achievement in Arts Education.
In closing, this is an exciting time of year. For seniors and their parents, this is an
exciting time filled with thoughts of the future. The staff at Mountain Pointe
High School would like to congratulate and thank our seniors for leading
the way, and making this year one of the best in Mountain Pointe history.
For all of our parents, thank you for the support you provide Mountain Pointe
High School. We look forward to a great ending of a tremendous school
year. I am looking forward to the new class of freshmen that will enter in the fall
and the leadership the class of 2011 will provide next year as seniors.

During their senior year, many students choose to plan trips with
private travel agencies. While these trips usually occur after the
end of the school year, we feel that parents should be informed
that Mountain Pointe High School and the Tempe Union School
District DOES NOT coordinate, sponsor, or endorse these
privately organized trips. Traditionally, our Mountain Pointe Grad
Night sponsors a special Senior Grad Night event for all seniors.
Graduation Practice (mandatory)

 Do not arrive to practice or graduation with alcohol or
drugs in your possession. Being on campus in possession of
or under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a violation of
school discipline policy.
•Influence is identified by obvious odor or irrational behavior, or physical impairment relating to the use of alcohol
or drugs.
•Any student under the influence of drugs or alcohol will
be removed from the campus. The student’s diploma will
be held until completion of community service hours to be determined at the MPHS campus.
 Do not arrive with any devices, air horns, fireworks or apparel to be used to disrupt the graduation ceremony.
 Be patient – An event of the magnitude of a high school
graduation is composed of many organizational challenges
which require ample time and absolute cooperation. Please work in a positive manner with administrators and
supervising teachers.

“Keys to Success” Workshops
Incoming Freshman Parents Invited to
MPHS “Keys to Success” Workshops
Mountain Pointe is seeking to address the successful transition of
8th graders to the freshman year of high school. Research tells us
that this is a documented “pivotal time” for students. It is during
their freshman year that:

4 the highest dropout rates are recorded.
4 Students are asked to make academic choices that launch them
on a four year plan to college, some other form of post- secondary
education or successful entrance into the workforce or military.
4 Students make important lifestyle choices that can lead them
toward self sufficiency.
4 Students are starting to make important transitions: middle school
to high school; adolescence to young adulthood; dependency to self
sufficiency.
In order to help every student reach their potential in this crucial
freshman year, Mountain Pointe has created a parent handbook,
PowerPoint presentation and communication workshops for
the parents of our incoming 8th graders. Principal Bruce Kipper
worked with outstanding faculty leaders to create this innovative
program that started in 2007. Over 500 parents attended last year
and learned about the “keys to success” at Mountain Pointe. The
PowerPoint contains slides from our Guidance department, Gifted
Program and keys to success in our core subject areas.
Each workshop is led by Assistant Principal, Mary Keller with a
panel made of administrators, teachers and counselors who answer
questions from the 8th grade parents. There are four remaining
workshops scheduled for incoming freshman parents.

New Programs Make Their Mark
At Mountain Pointe
Are you receiving the Pride News updates? One of the
communication tools that Mountain Pointe offers its families is
our Pride News Parent E-mail List. This database allows us
to keep our students’ families informed and up-to-date concerning current issues and important events at Mountain Pointe High
School and in the Tempe Union High School District.
Several new programs have made their mark this year at Mountain
Pointe to increase student academic success and help those students
who need extra opportunities to focus on their school work. The
programs are being piloted this year in an effort to further support
student success.
Privacy of your e-mail is always a concern. This database will not
be shared with anyone outside of the Mountain Pointe administration. You may choose to be removed at any time by sending us an
unsubscribe e-mail.
In addition to our comprehensive TOTEM tutoring program, teachers have joined the TOTEM program after school for all levels of
support. Peer tutors are still available everyday before school
and after school Monday through Thursday. Teacher tutoring is
available Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday in Math, Science, Foreign
Languages, English and Social Studies.

Teacher Tutoring
Late Maricopa Bus
The late bus to Maricopa has been highly successful this semester
giving students the opportunity to stay for tutoring and to participate
in extracurricular activities. Students pick up their late bus pass in
Activities on Tuesdays & Thursdays. The late bus leaves Mountain
Pointe at 4:10 p.m.
Academic Interventions
Teachers and administrators are in contact with identified students
about their unsatisfactory progress in their classes. Students are
guided to tutoring, study skills or required 3-7 school to work on
bringing up their grades. Parents are contacted, to work as a team
with the student, teachers and the administrator, to ensure success
for the student. Parents are encouraged to monitor grades online,
check progress reports, and stay in contact with the teacher.
Students are encouraged to complete weekly progress reports,
after school tutoring and any extra credit opportunities.
3-7 School
3-7 school is up and running for students who are assigned by an
administrator. Homework is collected in Guidance and by consulting the course web pages. Students have access to computers and
are assisted by the evening instructor.
Parents can get further information about any of the new programs
by speaking with their child’s guidance counselor, assigned administrator, or the At Risk Coordinator.

It takes a 4-year commitment!
All freshmen, sophomores and juniors are reminded to keep your
focus on the criteria for Senior Walk. Senior Walk is a tradition unique to MPHS that was designed to salute all Pride seniors
who have made outstanding contributions to our Mountain Pointe
community. Those selected are honored during Homecoming
Week, their names will appear in a special program and on the
Senior Walk banner that is flown in the G-Wing. Honorees will
participate in the Homecoming assembly and in the Homecoming
football half-time show.
Senior Walk candidates must:
• have a 3.25 cumulative GPA (Academic Scholarship)
• have NO history of chronic discipline or attendance
problems. (This means candidates can have no serious offenses like academic dishonesty or fighting or multiple small
offenses like dress codes or sweeps. Good Citizenship is the
key here.)
• have participated in a variety of school clubs, activities,
organizations or athletics at MPHS. (This means at least
2 per year. School Involvement is the key here.)
• have participated in various documented community
service each of the past three school years. (This means
at least 30 hours of documented community service for your
freshman year, 30 hours documented for your sophomore
year and 30 more documented hours for your junior year.)
Remember, community service is giving of yourself to help others
without benefit, reward, or intent of recognition. You do not volunteer to gain something, but because it is the “right” thing to do.
You are helping the community and trying to make our community
a better place in which to live. Your project must be productive
and benefit people who are in need of help. Community service
examples include volunteering at the Red Cross or the Library,
helping the Scouts, babysitting for a family in need with no pay, or
working with a club like Best Buddies, Student Council, Key Club
or the Environmental Club where community service opportunities
are offered on a regular basis.
For the Class of 2011 Senior Walk applications will be available
Monday, May 17, 2010 to start filling out for the fall. Homecoming is
early next year and the applications are due August 26, 2010.
Senior Walk takes a four year commitment – so make sure you
keep your grades up, demonstrate good citizenship, get involved
and GIVE to our community.

Everyday at Mountain Pointe there are teachers to assist, copying to do, parents to call, student activity forms to process, coaches to help,
and filing galore. Some volunteers work in the office and some work for specific departments or teachers. No matter where they help
out, our volunteers help Mountain Pointe meet the needs of our students and staff. All parent and community volunteers are invited to the
Volunteer Appreciation Reception hosted by the Administration on Thursday, May 13th at 10:00 a.m. in the Faculty Café.

Provides Inspiration For Students
With their slogan, “We have the power to change the world,”
Mountain Pointe’s Women Mentors Day Club planned an amazing
day for over 125 young women. The day started with breakfast
provided by the Language Honor Society and gift bags in the auditorium lobby and continued with up close and inspiring visits with
our Mentors.Twelve highly successful women shared their stories
of hard work and success in the fields of law, education, publication,
business, medicine, environment and the arts. This year’s mentor

Dance, Music, Theater, and Visual Arts Teachers
Mountain Pointe High School has won the Mayor of Phoenix’s 4th annual Mayor’s School of Excellence Award for
Outstanding Achievement in Arts Education. The annual
award, created by the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture,
is presented to an individual school that teaches all the arts
(music, visual arts, dance and theater) as specific disciplines
in school or after school environments. The Arts program
also received a cash prize of $1,000. In addition, the Arizona
Alliance for Arts Education presented our staff with the
Arizona Creative Ticket Award for Arts Schools of
Distinction.
The Arizona Alliance for Arts Education will also submit
Mountain Pointe High School to be considered for the John F.
Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts National Schools
of Distinction in Arts Education Award for 2010-2011.
Congratulations to our Fine Arts teachers for their hard
work and passion in delivering the arts to our students.

Immunizations
Medications at School
If you are a current student at MTP, and have a shot coming due
before the end of December, 2010, you will receive a reminder letter in May. Please make sure to check and see what shot is needed
and make sure that the Nurse’s Office receives the paperwork
right away after getting the shot. You may mail it, fax it or drop
it off at the school.
Per district policy, the Nurse will be able to give a student Tylenol,
Advil, Tums, etc, if the following conditions are met:
Incoming freshmen: If you receive a letter stating that shots
are needed, PLEASE make sure you take the letter to your doctor
appointment and get the required shots before the start of the
school year.
~ Unopened, sealed, not expired, container of the appropriate
medication with the student’s name on the container. Please
make sure the medication will not expire before the end of
the school year.

State of Arizona to attend school at Mountain Pointe, feel free to

• We do not give over- the- counter medications before 9:00 am
or after 1:00 pm.
Care Plans
The district is now requiring standard care plans for any student
who has a health/medical issue that needs to be addressed here at
school. This includes diabetes, seizures, asthma, and cardiac issues.
Current students with known conditions will receive paperwork
during the month of April. Please complete and return the paperwork to methe Nurse’s Office before, or at the start of, the new
school year. At that time we can schedule training for myself and
any other involved staff members. Incoming freshmen should have
already received paperwork in the mail.
If there are other conditions, other than the ones mentioned here,
please contact the nurse so we can work on getting a care plan
together for your student.
Also, if your child will require taking daily medications at
school, please let the nurse know.
If your child has a condition, but will not require any involvement from the school, please make the nurse aware of that
as well.
Snacks
Please encourage your student to eat breakfast before coming to
school. Many students, on a daily basis, go to the Nurse’s Office
who just need something to eat. They claim that they don’t have
time to eat in the morning. Encourage them to get up 5 minutes
earlier so they can grab a piece of fruit, glass of milk, toast, cereal,
etc. It helps them to focus and get through the morning. It may
even improve their classroom performance!
• Parent brings two things to the nurse:
~ Medication form that has been completed and signed by a
parent or guardian with specific instructions.
• If a student requests Tylenol more than 3 times per month, we
will contact the parents or guardians.
• Daily Meds: Parents need to complete and sign a medication form
from the health office and bring in the prescribed medication
in the original container which has doctor name, prescription
number, dosage, expiration date, etc.
PE Excuses
If your student must be excused from PE (including Dance), due
to an injury, etc., the parent MUST send a note with the student
and the student must see the nurse BEFORE class. If the situation
is one in which your child will need to be excused for more than
one or two days, please send a doctor’s note as well.
Donations
The Health Office is always very appreciative, of donations. The
following items are currently in need:
• Lysol or Clorox wipes
• Latex-free bandaids
• Juice boxes or pouches
• Contact lens solution
• Saltine crackers
Thank you and please feel free to contact me with any questions
or concerns.
Also, please talk to your students to make sure they are eating
lunch every day. You can add money to their lunch account online
at the district website. You can also check to see WHAT they are
eating for lunch!
We have a free and reduced lunch program available for families
who qualify. The application is available on the district website at
www.tuhsd.k12.az.us.

Prom Comes Early for the Best Buddies
Mountain Pointe’s Best Buddies club sponsored “Masquerade” on March 6, 2010. This second
annual Best Buddies Prom was put together by students in the club and sponsors Jamaica
Drowne and Christine Vanderpool, in addition to several other teachers and staff members
who volunteered their time. Students arrived to the small gym dressed in formal attire for
an evening of food, dancing and fun. The DJ, decorations and food were purchased by Best
Buddies tax credit donations. Duke photography was on hand to capture the memories of
the night.
Best Buddies pairs students with intellectual disabilities in one-to-one friendships with
non-disabled peers. Best Buddies boasts more than 900 high school chapters worldwide.
Mountain Pointe’s chapter of Best Buddies was recognized this year as being an outstanding
state chapter.

The MPHS Lionheart Band program is gearing up for all incoming
freshman and new non-freshman members with Spring Clinics to get
you off “on the right foot”. Students should wear socks and sneakers, comfortable clothing, hat, sunglasses and bring lots of WATER.
Bring your instruments: tubist should bring your mouthpieces and
percussionist should bring sticks and mallets. Those interested in
colorguard (flags/dance) are welcome!
Percussion ONLY: Additional clinic rehearsals will be held with
Mr. Mitchell for all marching percussionists. These will involve
audition and placement for battery (marching drums) and front
ensemble (pit). Bring your sticks and mallets on May 3rd, 10th and
17th from 6pm-8pm.
Band Physical Day
Saturday, May 15th • 12:00 pm
May 15th is the Annual Spring Fling starting at 11am for all Band
families. At noon we will offer physicals in the school health office,
which are required for all marching band participants. Physical
packets will be given out in clinics, on Spring Fling Day or you can
pick one up in the Activities Office.
Marching Band Camp
Monday - Friday,July 26th-30th andAugust 2nd-7th • 7:00 am
Bring a lunch and lots of water!
Band Camp is a great time for all and a chance to learn the basics,
rehearse, socialize and team build. Camp dates are July 26th - 30th
and August 2nd - 7th from 7am - 4pm EVERYDAY plus 5-8pm on
Tuesdays & Thursdays. Bring a lunch each day as well as plenty of
water and outdoor gear. The schedule will be modified so that
the 9th graders may attend Freshman Boot Camp on August 5th
& 6th. The last evening features a Season Preview performance
and social starting at 5pm.

by MP’s Black Student Union, assisted by Theater Tech students and helped by NHS students - the talent show provided great entertainment, beautiful voices, thought-provoking poetry, and a myriad of jokes, juggling and jamming. “This was the best show to date,” according

Great things have been happening left and right at Mountain Pointe this Spring!
Congratulations to the Wind Ensemble, who earned a rating of
“Superior” at ABODA State Concert Festival. This rating, which
includes a “Superior” score for Sight Reading, is an impressive
accomplishment for our young musicians, and a gratifying reward for
the hard work and dedication required to pursue artistic growth.
Congratulations to senior Kevin Beck who was selected to receive
the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association Scholarship.
This prestigious award is presented to an outstanding senior who plans
to become a music major in college.
Mountain Pointe’s Salsa Dance Club recently was invited to perform
at the Maricopa Salsa Festival. The dance group entertained crowds
with 5 dance numbers including an audience participation finale. The
Salsa Club members also participated in the Ahwatukee Relay for Life
raising money for the American Cancer Society.
AZTeen Magazine recently conducted a Model Search for their
magazine covers. Be sure to look for Leland Fakir who will be
featured in the 2010-2011 year.
The Mountain Pointe Academic Decathlon team participated in the
state competition March 12th-13th . They did extremely well, finishing
11th out of 40 qualifying teams.This is a great accomplishment for our
co-curricular team which competes against teams who have AcDec
as a class each day. Our team scored 36,495 points, earning 18 top
10 finishes in individual events and beating our sister schools Desert
Vista and Marcos de Niza. Team members are:

Physical Day for Pride athletes will be held at Mountain Pointe on
Saturday, May 15th from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm in the auxilary
gym. This special event is sponsored by the following:

Quick but thorough physicals will be conducted for a nominal
fee of $30. A large portion of proceeds goes back to the MPHS
Sports Medicine Program. Cash and check payments only will be
accepted. Checks must include the following: current address and
phone number, student name, and student ID#.
Student’s must bring an original state certified birth certificate
or passport document(s). Parents, please bring your photo ID for
notarization of required documents. The required $50 activity fee
for fall sports will only be accepted during Pride Book Distribution
Days (see page 3 for dates and times) or after school begins.
Physical packets can be obtained from the Athletics Office prior
to Physical Day and will be available May 15th as well. Forms will
not be mailed out.

Grad Night 2010
What is Grad Night?

Fundraisers and Plannings:
Your help is needed! Currently we are gearing up to
Each year the parents of the graduating class sponsor
an alcohol and drug free party after the commencement ceremonies. The event is completely supervised
to ensure the safety and security of those participating.
Planning has been going on since July, but we are always interested in new ideas. A lot of preparation and
organization is necessary to make this night a success.

donations from local businesses for raffle prizes, checkin snacks, and the senior breakfast. We need volunteers
to help sell tickets during the school lunches and to
work on the final details of the event itself. Soon we will
be asking for volunteers to chaperone that night. Please
attend the next meeting and get involved.

Planning Meetings:
Planning meetings are held the first or second Monday
of the month at Mountain Pointe in room E204
(upstairs from the PE Lecture Hall) at 7:00 PM. Please
mark your calendars for the last planning meeting on
May 10th.
Changes to this schedule will be sent out by email and
posted on the web site: www.mpgradnight.com
Meeting minutes will also be posted on the web site
along with current fundraisers. You can also obtain the
Participation Consent and the Medical Consent Contracts, which are required to purchase a Grad Night

· eScrip program — Register your Safeway card (and
other cards) at www.escrip.com. Simply designate
Mountain Pointe Grad Night as your recipient
· Fry’s Cool Cash — Scan bar code from the website at
Fry’s one time. Grad Night will earn a donation from
your shopping through April.
· Senior Bricks — A fun and permanent way to honor
your MPHS 2010 graduate! Senior bricks from
previous years are located in the Knox Road parking
lot. See order form below.

Schwan’s, Tropical Smoothies. Check the website
