THE BULLET N Published for faculty & staff of North Shore Community College – Danvers, Lynn, & Beverly, MA Volume 44, No. 36, June 22, 2015 Trees Tagged on Lynn Campus - Environmental Technology Professor Barbara Heath and her HRT 230 Horticulture students, have placed tree tags on 10 Lynn campus trees. The trees are representative of an urban canopy and were chosen for traits which allow the trees to thrive in a city setting. Each tree tag gives the common name and botanical name of the tree and has a QR code embedded on the tag. When scanned by a smart phone, the QR codes link to mobile web pages which give more information about each tree including its carbon sequestration. The tagged trees enable a person to take a "self-guided" walking tour of our campus and to learn about the importance of urban trees in mitigating atmospheric pollution. Professor Heath intends to make the "tree tour" part of her curriculum. Funding for the tree tags came from a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Climate Stewards Education Project grant awarded to the college through NOAA Climate Steward Mentor Barbara Ikalainen's participation in the NOAA Climate Stewards Education Program. This year, I will be riding in my 16th Pan Mass Challenge on August 1st and 2nd. I have committed to raise $4500 for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute by riding 170 miles from Wellesley to Provincetown. The PMC now donates 100% of rider-raised funds directly to the cause. To date the PMC has raised $455,000,000! Even though the ride is in August, October 1 st is the fundraising deadline and this is why I was able to move the date this year. The “Bowl-A-Rama” is an inexpensive way for you to help support cancer research and also take home a handmade bowl, or other piece of pottery, as our way of thanking you for your support. The cost of $20 will include soup, salad, dessert, one hand-made piece of pottery of your choice and the satisfaction that you are helping fight cancer. Additional pieces may be purchased. We will be raffling off many other handcrafted items as well as having a 50/50 raffle. Winning raffle prize tickets will be pulled at 2:00 p.m. You do not have to be present to win. Thank you for your kindness. Sincerely, --Anne O’Shea, Professor, Math Department, [email protected] THE BULLETIN Page 7 of 8 By the time you read this I will be retiring in a few days. While I'm excited about finally having the time to do all those things I've dreamed about for years, (like having the summer off, traveling and hanging with my grandchildren) I find I’m a little nostalgic for the good old days here at NSCC. Way back when we were housed in multiple buildings in Beverly, before there was a Danvers Campus or Lynn Campus. My, my … we have seen many changes over the years! We have moved and grown, from buildings to BANNER (we kicked and screamed … remember?), social media to online classes, and we are still growing! I have enjoyed being a part of the NSCC community. I’ve met many students, staff and faculty over the years and have forged some great friendships. I want to express my thanks to each of you who have been such a great support to me during my tenure at North Shore Community College. I shall remember all of you well and the good times we shared. I am looking forward to my retirement … with bells on!! Thank you! --Julie Howland THE BULLETIN Page 8 of 8
