MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
“Learn from yesterday,
live for today,
hope for tomorrow.”
These are the words of scientist, physicist and thinker Albert
Einstein. His quote continues with a second line:
“The important thing is
not to stop questioning.”
At the Center for Disability Services, these two sentences could be
considered guiding principles for 2014, and for the years ahead.
Our world has transformed and experts tell us significant change
in attitudes and behaviors now occurs more rapidly than
in the past.
People with disabilities today live lives which may
prove that theory correct. Just a few short decades ago,
many individuals with disabilities lived separately in
large, institutional settings, with no program services
and little planning for how to spend the hours. It was
the way things were, the way it was done. There was
no push for special education, no job skills training or
accommodations in the workplace, little if any inclusion
in the community. All of that has changed, and I am proud to
say we at the Center for Disability Services have demonstrated
leadership and been in the forefront of this progress.
The Center’s 12,000 program participants are encouraged to
advocate for themselves and work with our professional advisors to
chart a course and set goals. And they do.
Young Rory Chamberlain, who charms everyone she meets with
her big smile, lives at St. Margaret’s Center, a pediatric and young
adult skilled nursing facility which is part of the Center. She is
now able to attend Clover Patch Preschool at our main site, just
down the street.
Matthew Graham lives in a residence the Center operates and is an
active volunteer, a self advocate and a Recreation Assistant at St.
Margaret’s Center, a job he thoroughly enjoys.
The successes, positive changes and acceptance keep on coming for
our students, adults and families.
Siena Saints head basketball coach Jimmy Patsos asked Bill Fowler,
an avid fan of local sports and a participant in the Center’s adult
program services, to inspire his team before a game. Parent Irene
Stallmer publicly advocated for a pay raise for direct care workers,
because she spoke for her family and many others who recognize
the importance of the work they perform.
The Center’s new medical director, Maria Kansas Devine,
M.D., believes in serving the whole person with an integrated
approach to health. Our Employment Options reports 10 new
job placements, three internships and five individuals who became
totally independent in the workplace.
Things at the Center are not all serious, however. Dwight “Doc”
Gooden, a three time World Series Champion, toured the Center’s
main site and greeted every child and adult there before appearing
as special guest at An Aficionado Experience. History making
jockey Rosie Napravnik was honored at a picture perfect Siro’s
Cup, and a few days later, two time World Series Champion Graig
Nettles wowed us at the Center’s Golf Classic.
We had a rollicking visit from Ringling Bros. and Barnum &
Bailey advance clowns, a delicious Iron Chef cooking
contest, a big beach volleyball tournament to benefit
Prospect Center, a division of the Center, and a
successful Buddy Walk to promote the inclusion of
people with Down syndrome.
Clinicians from Russia visited several Center sites
to observe MOVE -- Mobility Opportunities Via
Education/Experience -- therapy sessions. We
collaborated on a unique dance project with the Ellen
Sinopoli Dance Company, the Dance Workshop at
Albany Academy for Girls and adults from the Center’s MOVE
program and presented a successful public performance.
Center Transportation began using a new mapping and routing
system, we received high marks for fire and safety and service
coordination after state surveys. We presented public health
education forums and our employees were honored for their hard
work, dedication and innovation with statewide awards.
We question. We plan. We progress.
We learn, we live and thanks to you and your support, we don’t
just hope--we are certain tomorrow will be even better for the
thousands of individuals and families who depend on the Center
for Disability Services, the place where people get better at life.
Alan Krafchin
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD
On behalf
of the Governing Board of Directors, our sincere
thanks for supporting the Center for Disability Services, the place
where people get better at life, during 2014. As Chairperson of the
Board, Chair of the Executive Committee and Program Services
Committee, and a member of the Audit Committee, I see what
a valuable resource the Center is for thousands of people with
disabilities and hundreds of families in the Capital Region and
beyond. Many lives would have taken a very different course
without it.
The Center’s mission is to enable and empower people, primarily
those with disabilities, to lead healthy and enriched lives.
The Center’s programs and services motivate students, residents
and program participants to accomplish more in their daily lives
and it inspires employees, who consider their work a calling, not a
job. It is likely you know someone who uses the Center’s
medical, education or residential services or someone
who works there. As a top ten employer, the Center
ranks #7 in The Business Review’s 2014 list of private
sector employers with 2,473 employees.
Numbers cannot illustrate the relationships among staff,
children and adults at the Center. New ideas and new
methods are shared in the classrooms at Langan School
in Albany and Langan School at Prospect Center,
new worlds open up when people with disabilities use
MOVE--Mobility Opportunities Via Education/Experience-equipment, employees with and without disabilities show their
pride as they work at Commercial Services, and there is joy when
a resident at St. Margaret’s Center is able to transition away
from using a respiratory ventilator. Every one of these successes
depends upon a team of dedicated clinicians and staff and the
determination of the people involved.
At the Center, we have big dreams and even bigger goals.
The Center’s vision is to be recognized as the regional preference and
the national model for services, education, training, and research.
To achieve the Center’s mission and vision, we continually seek
innovative ideas and the energy to implement them. We connect
with business and political leaders. We collaborate with academic
institutions, arts organizations, other non-profits and community
advocacy groups and we are always searching for ways to achieve
the next level.
All the while, we are accomplishing more with far fewer dollars as
federal and state support dramatically decreases. At the same time,
there is more demand for the Center’s programs and services.
This makes it especially important for the community to support
the Center’s fundraising efforts. You may have made a pledge to
our Telethon or attended one of our signature events such as Siro’s
Cup or An Aficionado Experience. You may give to the Center’s
annual fund or donate through the United Way. These efforts
mean you support the Center today, in the here and now.
The Center’s Endowment Fund is a natural extension of this
commitment to those we serve, however, it is focused on the
future. Now at 3.5 million dollars, the Endowment Fund is
professionally managed and growing. Our Planned Giving
initiative is for parents and other friends to leave a legacy and be
certain the Center remains viable for future generations. I urge you
to join our Guardian Circle and consider making a planned gift to
the Center.
I invite you to visit the Center’s locations in Albany,
Queensbury and sites in between to see first hand
what we do. Go to our website at www.cfdsny.org for
information, details on events and much more.
Through thoughtful guidance, the expertise of
administrators and staff and careful planning for the
future, the Center for Disability Services will continue
to, in the words of Albert Einstein, “ Learn from
yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”
Thank you for your interest and support of the Center for
Disability Services as we create a better tomorrow for this
generation and generations to come.

basis, Center Transportation transports
between 550 and 600 consumers and
covers a large service area including Warren,
Washington, Saratoga, Schenectady,
Albany, Greene, Schoharie, Rensselaer

The co-founders of Shop Studios in
Manhattan, Jacques Rosas and Eric
Steding, donated an original art collection
of 13 canvases to St. Margaret’s Center, a
pediatric and young adult skilled nursing
facility which is a division of the Center
for Disability Services. Each piece was
created to capture the imagination of the
young residents of St. Margaret’s Center
and is a two foot by two foot square in eye
catching colors. The artwork, in abstract
expressionism or pop art style, features
images of cats, a pig and fish designed to
captivate or inspire all who see it.
Players and spectators alike had a terrific
time at the 23rd annual 4 on 4 Beach
Volleyball Tournament on August 2 and
3, which was held under sunny skies on
Million Dollar Beach in Lake George.
On Saturday, 91 teams and 399 players
competed, and on Sunday, 87 teams and

the tournament drew between 500 and

equipment for children and adults with
disabilities, toured the Center for Disability
Services on October 7. The group visited
Cloverpatch Preschool, the Langan School,
the 314 South Manning Boulevard Adult
MOVE program, the Smith Center and the
Northgate residence and observed MOVE
therapy sessions with Center therapists
working with preschoolers, school age
children and adults. MOVE stands for
Mobility Opportunities Via Education/
Experience and is an approach which
incorporates mobility into classroom
lessons, skills building, job training and
home activities.
Nine students from the Dance Workshop
at Albany Academy for Girls participated
in the school’s community service day
on October 24, at the Smith Center in
Guilderland, a program site for the Center
for Disability Services. The students learned
about individuals with disabilities and then
actively participated in a movement and
dance workshop with MOVE -- Mobility
Opportunities Via Experience -- adult
program participants. Ellen Sinopoli and
members of the Ellen Sinopoli Dance
Company worked with the teens.
Four employees from the Center for
Disability Services were honored at the

presentation at the Hilton Albany in late
October. CP of NYS Staff Recognition
Award winners were Emilio Gigliotti,
Langan School; Diana Hart-Genre, Respite
Programs; James Michener, Information
Technology; and Mirza Ninstant, Center
Health Care. The Public Service Award
was presented to Sheila Shea, Esq.,

Disability Services, an exhibit at The Arts
Center of the Capital Region, featured
original artwork from individual artists
and collaborative works created by Center
program
participants.
The 28 works
in the show
were selected by The Arts Center’s Director
of Exhibits, Sara Boylen, and its Directors
of Education, Sunny da Silva and Joseph
Mastroianni. The Center for Disability

to offer an after-school/after-work program
each weekday as well as various classes
including digital photography, ceramics,
jewelry, drawing and painting.

Services, was honored on November 5, with
an award presentation in his workplace.
Vatsyayan received a 2014 William B.
Joslin Outstanding Performers Award
from Corey Heritage, of the New York State

The Center for Disability
Services presented a pair
of separate health care
symposiums on November
4, at the same location,
the Albany Marriott Hotel.
Patients, family members
and health professionals
attended either the 12th
annual Multiple Sclerosis
Symposium or the Symposium on
Seizure Disorders and Epilepsy. The MS
Symposium, offered in cooperation with the
National Multiple Sclerosis Society, featured
Angela Applebee, MD, Director of the MS
Center for Northern New England. Rosella
Cavaliere, MD, Director of the MS Care
Center at the Center for Disability Services,
welcomed the crowd. The MS Care Center
is an affiliated MS Clinic and partner with
the National MS Society. A Symposium on
Seizure Disorders and Epilepsy, presented in
partnership with the Epilepsy Foundation of
Northeastern New York, featured Michael
Gruenthal, MD, Ph.D, Chief of Neurology
at Albany Medical Center.
Bowling enthusiasts were rolling strikes
and spares during the Holiday Bowl, a
benefit for the Center for Disability Services
Foundation, on November 9. The event,
presented by Southwest Airlines, was held at
Spare Time Lanes in Latham, and attracted
families, friends and a number of Center
employees.
A large and enthusiastic crowd
applauded A Showcase for Creative
MOVEment, a collaborative dance
program, on November 20, at the new
performance space at Albany Academy
for Girls. It featured the Ellen Sinopoli
Dance Company, MOVE -- Mobility
Opportunities Via Experience -- adult
program participants from the Center
for Disability Services, staff members
MILESTONES
and Dance Workshop students from Albany
Academy for Girls. The unique, first-ofits-kind partnership was choreographed to
demonstrate the joy of dance and movement
for self expression. The performance of A
Showcase for Creative MOVEment was made
possible by a grant administered by The Arts
Center of the Capital Region.
A Gala Champagne Reception offered
a preview of the 23rd North Country
Festival of Trees, a benefit for Prospect
Center, a division of the Center for
Disability Services. Elizabeth Miller was
Honorary Chairperson and Gina Peca and
Ann Harubin D’Alessandro served as Gala
Chairpersons. The 23rd North Country
Festival of Trees was held December 5
to December 7, at the Queensbury Hotel
in Glens Falls. The elegant hotel was
transformed into a Winter Wonderland
with hundreds of exquisitely decorated
trees, wreaths, centerpieces, fireplace mantle
decorations, stockings and gingerbread
houses on display and available for purchase.
Hundreds of people attended the family
friendly festivities which included the
Children’s Wonderland featuring arts &
crafts, games, activities and the opportunity
to visit with Santa Claus.
On December 7, Ned Norton, head of
Albany’s Warriors on Wheels project, where
a number of the Center’s adult program
participants do strength and flexibility
training, was profiled as a finalist in the
CNN Heroes/Everyday People Changing
the World contest. Although Norton was
not the top finisher, he was introduced
by talk show host Kelly Ripa during the
broadcast and he did receive a Subaru
matching grant to continue his good work.
A highly anticipated event took place on
December 9, as students at the Langan
School and Clover Patch Preschool greeted
members of the Albany Police Athletic
League (PAL), Santa Claus and volunteer
helpers for an annual holiday visit. Gifts
were delivered for the Center’s Giving Tree
project and small treats were handed out
to the assembled students. Chief Steven
Krokoff, other APD chiefs and several
officers attended.
Santa Claus and members of the Renegade
Pigs Motorcycle Club made an annual visit
to St. Margaret’s Center, a division of the
Center for Disability Services, on December
20, to bring holiday cheer to the residents
of the pediatric and young adult skilled
nursing facility. During the Christmas
Holiday Run, the Renegade Pigs were
joined by student volunteers. An organizer
of the Holiday Run said members keep
coming back to St. Margaret’s year after year
because when they are able to put a smile
on a child’s face they get more out of it than
they give.
THE CENTER FOR DISABILITY SERVICES:TODAY AND TOMORROW
From infants and preschoolers to adults and seniors, the Center
for Disability Services in Albany is a vital resource for thousands of
people every year. Known as the place where people get better at
life, it provides support in a myriad of ways to individuals who have
disabilities. Community contributions ensure that this charitable
organization, which has been around for 72 years, will continue to
exist tomorrow. The Center now serves the North Country with
its new division, Prospect Center in Queensbury, and operates the
Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center. Donations make so
many things possible, especially dreams.
Born months prematurely, Rory Chamberlain has proven
to everyone what a strong will can
accomplish. This preschooler, who captures
hearts wherever she goes, originally lived in
the ventilator unit at St. Margaret’s Center,
a division of the Center for Disability
Services. She was gradually weaned off the
respiratory system and is now attending
preschool down the street at the Center’s
main site.
“She’s a ball of personality, which shows
with everything she does. She’s a little
feisty, she’s a little self-directed,” said
Jennifer Corazzini, of Clover Patch
Preschool, “but that has only helped her
fight the fight and get to be who she is.”
Matt Graham, who is on the autism
spectrum, wanted a job working with
other young people who have disabilities,
but was finding it difficult to get hired. He is now employed as a
Recreation Aide at St. Margaret’s, thanks to his own efforts and
assistance from the Center’s Employment Options service which
matches applicants to competitive employment jobs and teaches
them the skills necessary to keep those jobs.
“Even when I’m not at work, I’m dreaming that I’m at work,” said
Graham, with a big smile. “You could call me a workaholic.”
“Our workforce is well known for being incredibly dependable,”
noted Jeff Lauridsen of the Center’s Employment Options.
With a reputation for being helpful and a willingness to give back
to others, Graham, who is 24 years old, sets an example with his
energy. He volunteers weekly in the Center’s Human Resources
Department and is a self advocate.
Skilled nursing, education, employment and job training are only
some of what the Center for Disability Services offers. Primary and
specialty medical care, dental care, access and mobility services,
residential, transportation and respite care are also available to
the community. Financial support from
individual donors and businesses enhances
these programs and services and pays
for specialized mobility equipment and
technology for communication.
All of the money donated benefits local
people in 80 locations and in 15 counties
and 92 cents out of every dollar raised
goes directly to the Center’s programs and
services for families, friends, colleagues
and neighbors.
People are first and foremost in the
Center’s mission: to enable and empower
people, primarily those with disabilities,
to lead healthy and enriched lives. The
Center and its employees help make
dreams a reality, and the community is
a steadfast and valued partner in this
effort-- today and tomorrow.
