OUR MISSION
To enable and empower people, primarily those with disabilities, to lead healthy and enriched lives.
OUR VISION
To be recognized as the regional preference and the national model for services, education, training, and research.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
“We can have a better tomorrow only if our today is better than our yesterday.”
At the Center for Disability Services and its divisions, the
Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center, Prospect
Center in Queensbury and St. Margaret’s Center in Albany,
we are dedicated to making progress today in order
to achieve a better tomorrow. Nothing could be more
important as we face the challenges and joys of modern
life.
Technology has changed so many aspects of our lives
at school, at home and in the workplace and it has
revolutionized the world for people with physical and
intellectual disabilities. Walk through our Langan School in
Albany or Queensbury and you will observe computerized
communication devices, advanced mobility equipment
and teachers and students using iPads and smartboards in
the classrooms. It makes things possible which may have
seemed impossible years ago: communication for those not
able to speak with their own voices, mobility for people
with severe physical disabilities, academic and social
interactions with people here and around the globe.
Young Elliott Lubin-Olanipekun loves the iPad. Sarah
Hillicoss performs with a professional dance company
using mobility equipment. They both benefit from
technology and from the resourcefulness of staff members
who find new ways to approach learning.
Support from our donors and the community helps to
provide specialized equipment for communication and
mobility and funds the Center’s innovative programs and
vital services, many of which are not found elsewhere.
2015 was a noteworthy year.
As our Clover Patch Camp celebrated its 50th season of
operation, members of the Leadership Tech Valley Class
of 2015 raised money and built a new, fully accessible
waterfront area for campers and visitors to enjoy today and
in the future.
For the first time, the Capital Region Builders &
Remodelers Association (CRBRA) chose the Center as
beneficiary of its Parade of Homes event in May and June.
Pitcher Tommy John and actor Gary Busey were popular
guests at An Aficionado Experience in June, and the
Newton Plaza Siro’s Cup in July welcomed a record crowd
and kicked off the horse racing season in style.
Prospect Center’s Volleyball Tournament in Lake George
had another successful year. We remembered the late Brian
Viele, a student and adult program participant, during
our September Bowl-a-Thon, because bowling was a
sport he loved. Several hundred turned out for the Capital
Region Buddy Walk to promote community inclusion
and acceptance of people with Down
Syndrome.
There was much more to 2015 than just
recreation and games.
The Center’s administrators and
employees must always be resourceful,
continually looking for new ways to accomplish goals.
They seek solutions and ideas, with the mission of enabling
and empowering people. They do this job well.
It was five years in the making, and now the Smith Center
in Guilderland is an officially designated MOVE—
Mobility Opportunities Via Experience— International
Model Site.
Our hard-working and deserving Direct Service
Professionals were honored for their daily efforts in
programs and residences. Child care technician Karen
Kister retired, with some fanfare, after 50 years as an
employee of St. Margaret’s Center. Other employees were
recognized with statewide awards from LeadingAge New
York, New York Industries for the Disabled, and the
Cerebral Palsy Associations of New York State.
The Center was a Top 10 Private Sector Employer in
Albany Business Review’s Book of Lists. Siro’s Cup and
An Aficionado Experience ranked in the Top 20 of Capital
Region fundraising events and the Center’s Foundation was
in the Top 25, ranked by total revenue.
We are justifiably proud of the accomplishments of
the 12,000 people with disabilities we serve and the
accomplishments of our staff. We provide support to
hundreds of families and we are grateful for the generosity
of people in the Capital Region and beyond, people who
recognize the value of the Center for Disability Services.
Thank you for believing in a better tomorrow and for
improving today. A better tomorrow means good things
for everyone— independence, community inclusion,
understanding, mobility, employment, friends and family.
The Center for Disability Services is the place where people
get better at life, and we would not be here without you.
Alan Krafchin
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD
On behalf of each of our clients, our
families, and our Governing Board of
Directors, I thank you for your continued
support of and advocacy for the Center
for Disability Services, the place where
people get better at life. As I reflect on
the past 30 years of my involvement
with the Center, I am increasingly
awestruck by the compassion and purpose that each of our staff
members, volunteers and donors exhibit through their unwavering
commitment to the Center.
I have been fortunate to experience firsthand how much the
Center matters to thousands of people with disabilities and
hundreds of families in the communities which the Center serves.
It is a vital community resource which shapes many lives and
impacts many people.
The Center’s Mission is to enable and empower people, primarily
those with disabilities, to lead healthy and enriched lives.
I have chosen to volunteer my time at the Center because of what
the Center means to me and my family, and the positive and
lasting impact it has had on my daughter, Jennifer. Jennifer’s life
has been transformed by the many years we have spent with the
Center throughout her childhood, her years at the Langan School
and today as Jennifer participates in adult programs and lives in a
residence operated by the Center.
The Center gives individuals and their families hope for tomorrow.
As I told the 2015 graduates of the Langan School, their
graduation is a significant day for them, their families and the
Center. They have come full circle. The Center is here for them
today as it will be in their future. In turn, they will be here for the
Center, through their experiences, their personal growth, their
learning and their new relationships representing the Center’s best
as they move forward. Many graduates transition to the Center’s
adult day or residential programs as they continue into young
adulthood.
The Bard had a perfect quote to describe life’s journey:
“We know what we are, but know not what we
may be.” —William Shakespeare
The Center exists so we may become our best selves. It enriches
lives and builds a stronger community for its students, program
participants, patients, residents, staff, board members, neighbors
and others. Nearly everyone knows someone who has been
impacted by the Center, either through employment or through
its programs and services. Our “people first” approach encourages
accessibility and inclusion of people who have disabilities in all
aspects of community life.
Work is an essential part of day-to-day life. Print, reproduction,
and scanning services were added to the inserting and mailing
services offered at the Center’s Commercial Services site in 2015.
More than 300 individuals with disabilities are now working at
the Center’s mailing services or have secured jobs through its
Employment Options program. We take tremendous pride in this
endeavor.
The Center’s vision is to be recognized as the regional preference
and the national model for services, education, training and research.
To achieve the Center’s vision and mission, we continually
connect and collaborate with business and political leaders,
academic institutions, arts organizations and other nonprofit and
community advocacy groups.
The Center is challenged to do more with fewer dollars as federal
and state funding continues to decrease while demand for the
Center’s programs and services has steadily increased year-overyear. This makes our thoughtful financial planning and year-round
fundraising efforts especially important.
Whether you attended one of the Center’s signature events, Siro’s
Cup or An Aficionado Experience over the years, participated in
our Annual Telethon or supported the Center’s annual fund, your
generosity underscores your commitment to the Center and the
people we serve.
As we look beyond the present, the Center’s Endowment Fund
is growing. At the end of 2015, it had reached nearly 4 million
dollars. Planned Giving legacy gifts ensure the Center’s future for
generations to come. Please consider becoming a member of the
Guardian Circle by making a planned gift.
See what the Center is all about by touring one of our locations.
Visit our website at www.cfdsny.org for information, event details
and more.
We are grateful for your support of the Center’s people and
programs - today and in the future. As we strive to become the
very best version of ourselves, we appreciate your company on this
journey.

Milestones
In March, the Leadership Tech Valley
(LTV) Class of 2015 announced its
collaboration with the Center for Disability
Services to build a waterfront recreation
area at the Center’s Clover Patch Camp
in Glenville, including a new dock and
ramp, fully accessible picnic area, campfire
area, pathways, safety fencing, and
major landscaping improvements. The
project was part of the celebration
surrounding Clover Patch Camp’s 50th
anniversary of serving the community
and benefiting local individuals with
disabilities by expanding opportunities
to develop social relationships and
promoting personal growth and
exercise.
In April, the Center for Disability
Services was named charitable partner
for the Fuccillo Kia Championship
2015/The Symetra Tour, Road to the
LPGA, at Capital Hills at Albany Golf
Course, scheduled for July. Known as the
place where people get better at life, the
Center is the region’s resource for education,
primary and specialty medical care, dental
care, job training and employment for
people with disabilities. In many cases, the
specialized care, innovative programs and
services are not found anywhere else.

The Direct Support Professional Development
Program, implemented by the Center for
Disability Services in Albany, was selected
as a winner of the Moving Mountains
Best Practice Award given by the National
Alliance for Direct Support Professionals
(NADSP). The Center employs hundreds
of direct support professionals who work
closely with individuals who have physical
and intellectual disabilities to assist them
with inclusion in all aspects of life-- at home,
school, the workplace and in the community.
The Center for Disability Services was
recognized as a Moving Mountains Award
winner at the 2016 Reinventing Quality
Conference.

dub performance to Katy Perry’s “Roar.”
Similar appreciation events were held at
the White Church Road residence in Troy
and the Northgate Drive residence in
Guilderland.
The three Raymour & Flanigan
showrooms in the Capital Region hosted an
awareness day on behalf of the Center for
Disability Services on September 19.
Foundation staff was on hand to greet
customers at 480 Balltown Road in
Niskayuna, 1695 Route 9 in Halfmoon
and 873 New Loudon Road in Latham
and answer any questions about the
12
Center’s
programs
and services.
There
were also Center
displays, fact sheets
and program
information. The day’s activities brought in
$2,500 to benefit the Center for Disability
Services Foundation, Inc.
More than 125
bowlers rolled
into fall at the
NYSCOPBA
Bowl-A-Thon,
presented by
Southwest
Airlines, on September 20. The festive
fundraising event at Saratoga Strike Zone
welcomed families, friends, Center residents
and staff members and Albany Police Chief
Brendan Cox and Deputy Chief Robert
Sears. The day included music, dancing,
games, face painting by Freckles the Clown,
a silent auction, a pizza lunch, and of course,
bowling. The Bowl-A-Thon honored the
memory of Brian Viele, who was part of
the Center for more than 40 years, first as a
toddler, then as a Langan School graduate
and finally as a participant in the Center’s
adult program. Large screens at the end
of the bowling lanes showed a continuous
loop of photos of Viele from throughout his
life. The NYSCOPBA Bowl-A-Thon raised
more than $12,000 to benefit the Center’s
students, residents and program participants.
Karen Kister is very special to the
thousands of children she’s worked with and
to her colleagues. For 50 years, Kister was
an employee of St. Margaret’s Center in
Albany, working as a child care technician
assisting residents of the pediatric and young
adult skilled nursing facility. She was also
a team leader for other staff members. On
September 23, Kister was guest of honor at
a surprise luncheon
to celebrate her 50
years of service.
Employees, friends
and several residents
cheered for Kister and
presented her with
a specially engraved musical snowglobe, a
large tote bag decorated by residents, a sheet
cake with matching fresh flowers, collages of
photographs and other keepsakes including
a large, handmade card. “The children are
the same, no matter if their name changes,
their disability changes, they still have the
same heart and the same goodness in them.
They have given back so much more than I
could ever possibly give them,” said Kister,
summing up her extraordinary work life.
Her story was recounted in a Times Union
profile written by Paul Grondahl with
photos by Paul Buckowski.
More than 350 runners
participated in the first
ever Spaten Sprint
5K on September 26,
in downtown Albany.
The event was part of
the 2015 Oktoberfest
presented by Wolff ’s Biergarten. Partial
proceeds from the run benefitted the Center
for Disability Services and the Epilepsy
Foundation of Northeastern New York.
Organizers said $33,000 was raised when
more than 350 enthusiastic walkers
participated in the 2015 Capital Region
Buddy Walk, to benefit the Down
Syndrome Aim High Resource Center,
Milestones
a division of the Center for Disability
Services, at Central Park in Schenectady.
They heard motivational remarks from
Congressman Paul Tonko, State Senator
Hugh Farley, and Assemblymembers John
T. McDonald III, Angelo Santabarbara
and James Tedisco before setting off
on the one mile trek which was open to
participants of all ages and abilities. The
large group of walkers was led by a pair
of mounted police officers from the City
of Albany. In addition to helping families
network, Buddy Walk promotes community
inclusion and acceptance of people with
Down syndrome and focuses on abilities
and accomplishments.
Judith Cahill,
Child Care
Technician (CCT)
at St. Margaret’s
Center in Albany,
was presented with a LeadingAge New
York Long Term Care Employee of
Distinction Award for 2015, on October
15. Cahill, who has worked at St. Margaret’s
Center, a pediatric and young adult skilled
nursing facility for 38 years, was honored
for her dedication and passion, as well as
her efforts to provide the highest quality
care to residents who are infants, children
and young adults with disabilities and
complicated or chronic medical conditions.
Cahill was one of only 18 employees out of
thousands from across the state selected to
receive the prestigious award.
The Barrel Saloon & Texas BBQ in Albany
was packed with music lovers for the
Rockin’ from the Heart show, a benefit for
the Gardening from the Heart project at the
Center for Disability Services. The featured
headliner was FunkAlicious, a band which
stepped in to play the Center’s big Siro’s
Cup party in
July when the
previously
booked
band had to
cancel due
to illness. Other
performers included
Kelly Maguire, Ian
Hunter, Pat Viglucci, Northern Comfort,
Wed Zeppelin and Blue Factory, a band
which has participated in this fundraiser for
years. More than $1,000 was raised through
donations and at the door.
It was a day nearly five years in the
making when a crowd gathered on
October 16, for the dedication of the
MOVE--Mobility Opportunities Via
Experience--International Model Site
in the adult day program at the Smith
Center in Guilderland, part of the Center
for Disability Services. Administrators,
staff members and program participants
had worked and planned for the occasion
since November 2010, when the first adult
MOVE program at the facility, dedicated
in memory of Milind Gokhale, was
introduced. Melinda Harrison, Program
Manager of MOVE International, was
beaming as she presented the official
proclamation making the Smith Center a
MOVE International Model Site.
The Center’s MOVE coordinators, trainers
and staff got a big round of applause at
the end of the ceremony. Guests were then
invited to watch dance demonstrations
highlighting dancers from the Smith Center
using specialized mobility equipment,
staff and members of the Ellen Sinopoli
Dance Company. Musician Brian Melick
provided the music with an assist from
some performers who played instruments
to accompany him. A generous grant
from The Hearst Foundations made it
possible to purchase MOVE equipment
for the Smith Center and all of the
MOVE programs for adults and children
at the Center’s various sites. There are 30
MOVE Model Sites throughout the U.S.,
Australia and New Zealand where parents,
teachers, therapists, support providers and
administrators utilize the MOVE Program
at an exceptional level and have high goals
for participants. MOVE Model Sites
host visitors who wish to see the MOVE
Program in action. MOVE emphasizes
mobility and skills development in every
aspect of life for a person who has a
disability: in the classroom, at home, in job
training and at work. Specialized equipment
is used to assist with movement.
The Center for Disability Services, in
cooperation with the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society and the Epilepsy
Foundation of Northeastern New York,
presented two health care events on
the same day and at the same location,
the Albany Marriott Hotel, for the
convenience of the patients, care partners
and professionals who attended. The 13th
Annual MS Symposium featured V.
Wee Yong, PhD, Professor at Hotchkiss
Brain Institute, and Rosemary Tucci, a
retired special education teacher, program
administrator and supervisor, trainer and
business owner. Rosella Cavaliere,
M.D., Director of the MS Care
13
Milestones
Center at the Center for Disability Services,
welcomed the crowd. The MS Care Center
is a partner in care with the National
MS Society. A Symposium on Seizure
Disorders and Epilepsy featured Harriet
Kang, M.D., and Gaye McCafferty, MS,
ANP-BC, MSCS, from Center Health
Care, and Michael Gruenthal, M.D.,
Chief of Neurology at Albany Medical
Center. Information on care products and
pharmaceuticals was available at display
booths, and both symposiums concluded
with panel discussions and Q & A sessions
in the afternoon. The MS Symposium was
sponsored by Biogen Idec.
For community service day on October
23, more than 60 students from the
Upper School at Albany Academy for
Girls learned about individuals who have
disabilities and then participated in activities
with students, residents and adult program
participants at three Center for Disability
Services sites. Freshman students worked
on seasonal crafts with Day Habilitation
adult program participants and sophomore
girls made and decorated cookies with
teenage students in the Center’s
14
Langan School. Junior class members
converged on St. Margaret’s Center to carve
pumpkins and interact with the young
residents in the respiratory ventilation unit.
Dance Workshop students and 12 seniors
from Cathy Teitelbaum’s advising group
spent their time at the Smith Center in a
movement workshop with adult program
participants who use MOVE--Mobility
Opportunities Via Experience--equipment,
with direction from members of the Ellen
Sinopoli Dance Company.
Four employees from the Center for
Disability Services were honored at the
2015 Cerebral Palsy of New York State
awards presentation on October 27. CP
of NYS Staff Recognition Award winners
were Kathryn “Kat” Dingman, MS,
Special Education Teacher, Langan School
at Prospect Center, a division of the
Center for Disability Services; Elizabeth
Kerins, Manager of Clinical Services,
Speech Therapy; Shawn Murphy, Program
Coordinator, Day Habilitation Program
at Prospect Center and John Rustick,
Resident Counselor, Sidney Albert
Residence. Dingman, Kerins, Murphy
and Rustick were chosen as award winners
because they exemplify the Center’s values
and are outstanding representatives of all of
the staff who make the Center for Disability
Services the place where people get better at life.
Actor R.J. Mitte, best known for his role as
Walter “Flynn” White, Jr., on the hit show
“Breaking Bad,”
made a special stop
at St. Margaret’s
Center to meet
residents and tour
the facility on
November 13. Mitte
has cerebral palsy,
as did his character on “Breaking Bad,”
although his character’s disability was more
severe and he altered his speech pattern and
used crutches for the role. Mitte greeted the
young residents of the pediatric and young
adult skilled nursing facility and posed for
photos and answered questions.
On November 11, Richard Whaley, who
works in mail processing at the 700 South
Pearl Street location of the Center for
Disability Services, received a 2015 William
B. Joslin Outstanding Performers Award
presented by Meredith Hartman, of
NYSID, New York State Industries for the
Disabled. Jeffrey Lauridsen, Director of
Employability at the Center, introduced
Hartman and Whaley. The Joslin Award
honors individuals with disabilities for
excellence in the workplace. Whaley is
known for being motivated and challenging
himself. A visual impairment has not
affected his determination to work through
obstacles and his focus and hard work have
made it possible for him to double his
productivity. At the presentation, Whaley
received an award certificate and a check,
and there was a celebration with his coworkers, job coaches, family and friends.
Milestones
A float promoting the Jingle Bell Jubilee
and the North Country Festival of Trees
made its debut in the Post-Star Holiday
Parade in South Glens Falls on November
22. Students from the Langan School at
Prospect Center, preschoolers and residents
from Prospect Center’s Dixon Road
residence rolled or marched the parade route
with staff and family members. They were
cheered by spectators all along the route.
In keeping with the Winter Wonderland
theme, the float featured trees decorated
by Langan School classrooms, festive
deer and a faux campfire complete with
“marshmallows” on sticks. Marchers played
jingle bells on hand instruments and gave
out candy canes.
David Murray was appointed Chief
Information Officer at the Center for
Disability Services. Murray is responsible
for the oversight of all of the agency’s
technology and information business
functions. This includes leading the
development of the Center’s evolving IT
strategy, its successful implementation, and
management of IT operational functions
such as phones, network, email, help desk,
IT security and the data center.
The Jingle Bell Jubilee, a festive cocktail
party at the Queensbury Hotel, kicked
off the holiday season and the North
Country Festival of Trees in grand style
on December 3. More than 150 guests
attended the fun event, which featured
dance music by The Refrigerators, fine
cuisine and spirits. Gina Peca and Ann
Harubin D’Alessandro were Chairpersons
of the Jingle Bell Jubilee. Sponsors included
Adirondack Trust Company, Ann
Harubin D’Alessandro and Family, Cool
Insuring Agency, Inc., The D’Ambrosio
Family, Jeffrey Killeen, Marvin and
Company, PC; Hurricane Grill,
Mechanical Services, Inc. and the Upstate
NY Autism Alliance. Hundreds of people
flocked to the North Country Festival of
Trees during the first weekend of December.
The elegant hotel was transformed with
exquisitely decorated trees, wreaths,
centerpieces and mantle decorations on
display and available for purchase. The
family friendly weekend included children’s
activities and entertainment from local
performers. Proceeds from the Jingle Bell
Jubilee and the North Country Festival of
Trees support Prospect Center, a division of
the Center for Disability Services.
For participants and staff in adult programs
at the Center for Disability Services, it was
the best one yet-- the best kind of holiday
celebration, that is. On December 7, the
group converged on The Arts Center of
the Capital Region in Troy for a trio of
special events. Guests enjoyed the staff
and consumer art exhibit Centered/Our
Journeys, listened to The Expressions sing,
and watched an original musical, “The Best
One Yet.” The performance of “The Best
One Yet” was part of a class at The Arts
Center, Collaborative Theatre, with Tammy
Ellis Robinson and Emily West.
The Center’s Endowment Fund continued
to grow and donors designated legacy gifts
in order to create a better tomorrow for
individuals with disabilities. By the end
of 2015, the Center’s Endowment Fund
reached nearly 4 million dollars. The
Center’s Planned Giving program was
formally launched during the year with
donors welcomed into Guardian Circle
membership.
A 24 year tradition continued when Santa
Claus, accompanied by members of the
Albany Police Athletic League (PAL),
Chief Brendan Cox and Albany Police
Department officers visited students and
staff at the Langan School and Clover
Patch Preschool at the Center for Disability
Services on December 10. They gave each
student a white toy bear and delivered
gifts for the Center’s Giving Tree project.
Children spoke with Santa Claus and had
photos taken. The Center’s lobby was
packed
with people
and the
Albanettes
choir, from
Albany
High
School, led
everyone in
song.
For the 15th year, members of the
Renegade Pigs Motorcycle Club visited St.
Margaret’s Center on December 19. Half a
dozen hardy souls sported face masks against
the cold air and rode their Harley Davidson
motorcycles up the driveway, while other
members showed up in pick up trucks laden
with gifts. Cheers erupted when the group
spotted Santa Claus, who was wearing a
black leather vest over his familiar red and
white suit. The Renegade Pigs delivered
more than 40 gift bags filled with clothing,
socks and other necessities to the children
and young adults. Santa handed out stuffed
animals and books, and visited with each
resident. The Renegade Pigs are current and
former law enforcement officers, firefighters
and paramedics.
