Why!Shin!Buddhists!(in!America)!Started!to!Go!to!Church!on!Sundays!
!At!a!ministers!conCnuing!educaCon!seminar!a!few!months!ago!the!guest!lecturer,!Dr.!George!
Tanabe,!shared!an!interesCng!and!amusing!anecdote!about!why!Buddhists!began!to!go!to!church/
temple!on!Sundays.!!Professor!Tanabe!is!reCred!from!the!University!of!Hawaii!where!he!taught!
Japanese!Religions.!!!I!was!a!liRle!disappointed!to!hear!Dr.!Tanabe’s!explanaCon,!but!at!the!same!
Cme!it!seemed!to!make!sense!about!the!thinking!of!the!Issei!plantaCon!workers!who!decided!to!
start!going!to!services!on!Sundays.!
!Before!hearing!Professor!Tanabe’s!comments,!I!was!under!an!idealisCc!impression!that!our!
Issei!pioneers!felt!that!following!the!ChrisCan!custom!of!aRending!church!on!Sunday!would!be!a!
nice!tradiCon!to!adopt!in!order!to!listen!to!the!Buddha!Dharma!with!the!sangha!on!a!regular!basis.!!!
Then!for!the!benefit!of!their!Nisei!children,!religious!educaCon!(aka!Sunday!(Dharma)!School)!and!
social!acCviCes!were!developed!to!further!develop!the!sangha.!!!
!According!to!Professor!Tanabe’s!research!one!of!the!factors!that!led!to!Jodo!Shinshu!
Buddhists!adopCng!the!ChrisCan!custom!of!joining!together!for!religious!observances!on!Sunday!
was!a!pracCcal!concern!for!geXng!a!day!off!from!working!on!the!plantaCons.!!!!The!Buddhist!
workers!would!noCce!that!their!ChrisCan!coZworkers!would!have!Sundays!off!in!order!to!observe!
the!custom!of!Sabbath,!a!day!of!rest!and!worship.!!!When!they!quesConed!the!plantaCon!
supervisors!why!they!didn’t!get!a!day!off,!the!plantaCon!owners,!who!were!descendants!of!ChrisCan!
missionaries,!explained!the!tradiCon!of!going!to!church!on!Sunday.!!The!Issei!Buddhists,!being!the!
pragmaCc!people!they!were,!responded!by!saying!they!would!go!to!church!too!!!!Thus!began!a!new!
version!of!Jodo!Shinshu!in!America.!!!
!
!As!we!trace!Buddhism’s!spread!throughout!Asia!we!can!see!how!it!acculturated!to!each!
country!that!it!was!adopted!by.!!Through!encountering!Taoism!and!Confucianism!in!China,!it!
underwent!some!major!doctrinal!and!cultural!changes!that!were!transmiRed!to!Korea!and!Japan.!!!
During!its!development!in!Japan!we!see!the!same!paRern!of!acculturaCon!that!takes!on!a!new!
expression.!!!The!introducCon!of!an!OZButsudan!(family!altar),!and!insCtuConalizing!the!custom!of!
observing!funeral!and!memorial!rites!are!further!examples!of!how!the!form!of!Buddhism!changes.!!
So!it’s!not!surprising!to!see!how!we’ve!adopted!different!ways!of!expressing!or!living!as!Buddhists!in!
America.!!!!
!Dr.!Tanabe!did!not!specify!when!the!custom!of!Buddhists!going!to!the!temple!on!Sundays!
began.!!Since!Jodo!Shinshu!temples!have!been!in!America!for!over!a!century,!I’ll!guess!that!the!
custom!has!been!in!place!for!four!or!five!generaCons.!!While!it’s!been!helpful!to!organize!temple!
acCviCes!around!the!schedule!of!weekly!services,!we!should!not!lose!sight!of!the!awareness!that!
hearing!the!Dharma!or!living!in!the!light!of!nembutsu!is!not!a!onceZaZweek!involvement.!!The!
placement!of!an!OZButsudan!in!the!home!as!the!religious!window!of!the!household!to!maintain!a!
daily!connecCon!to!one’s!spiritual!life!has!been!and!hopefully!will!conCnue!to!be!a!tradiCon!of!
appreciaCng!each!day!as!the!most!precious!day!of!living!in!the!Oneness!of!Immeasurable!Life.!!
Taking!this!awareness!further!we!can!appreciate!the!nembutsu!as!an!OZButsudan!that!we!carry!in!
our!hearts!so!that!wherever!and!whenever,!“…!the!mind!set!upon!saying!the!nembutsu!arises!
within!you,!you!are!immediately!brought!to!share!in!the!benefit!of!being!grasped!by!Amida,!never!
to!be!abandoned.”*!!!Namo!AmidaButsu!
