A rhetorical question, of course, but I am convinced that the committed work of music journalists, whether they are in print, radio, television, or web, has played and will continue to play a determining role in the success of this festival. In 45 years, together, we have known highs and lows and I recognize that it has not always been easy. A flood of criticism greeted our announcement of a more musically-diverse programme in our third year. It did not abate until we finally decided, in 1976, to rebaptise the Montreux Jazz Festival as the “Montreux International Festival”. But the public continued to call us “The Montreux Jazz” and in just over ten years this name established itself as a brand. We therefore made a U-turn in 1978. But the event’s musical diversity and especially my outspoken desire for audacious styles have continued to shock many purists. The colorful programme has been described, with some scorn, as “a salad with Claude Nobs sauce” and “a pizza with everything on it”. But as long as nobody questioned the quality of our concerts, I did not let these comments get to me. With my background as an apprentice cook, I don’t do too badly in a kitchen, after all. Besides these anecdotes that today I find extremely amusing, our exchange has especially been punctuated by mutual curiosity and a great friendship. To this day, the interviews have served as a pretext to passionate musical discussions and we are also enthusiastic about legendary concert recordings. The history of the festival also reflects to a certain extent the history of the media. From the festival’s beginnings we kept up with the latest techniques and, provided the artists did not object, filmed all the concerts. We have used the most diverse range of recording methods: we first started using High Definition in 1991 and 3D in 2010. Currently the festival’s vast musical heritage is being converted to digital. It must be preserved for future generations as should, we hope, a passion for good music. See you soon for an unforgettable 45th Montreux Jazz Festival! KING MAKE A GRAND OPENING FOR THE FESTIVAL’S 45TH EDITION. INTERVIEW WITH FESTIVAL DIRECTOR CLAUDE NOBS The Montreux Jazz Festival owes them so much: since the 1970s, Carlos Santana and B.B. King have written part of the festival’s history by delivering pure virtuosity innumerable times. For its 45th birthday they once more grace Montreux with their presence, offering concerts over several evenings and playing together on July 3. That night, the two guitar legends will play in unison for the first time ever on the Auidorium Stravinski stage. Mister Nobs, you turned 75 in February and the 45th edition of the festival begins in July. Are you in the mood for partying? I find birthdays rather tiring - at least mine. I prefer it when things happen spontaneously. Who knows, perhaps I will celebrate my 75th birthday in the middle of August with a firework display on the lakeside! On the other hand, the special edition of the festival means a lot to me. I feel like it was only yesterday we celebrated the 40th anniversary. And now we are already in our 45th year…it’s crazy. Forty-five years old could be a crucial age. Are there signs of a mid-life crisis? Not at all. There have certainly been some difficult years financially, but we have always looked for solutions that allow us to combine a demanding programme, a costly infrastructure and 16 consecutive days of concerts. It hasn’t always worked, but almost. Today, the festival runs like a dream and has aged well. The same cannot be said about me: sometimes, I still behave like a right brat. Last year you announced you wished to pass on the director’s aegis and to distance yourself a little from running the festival. Have you achieved this? Yes, but I should exercise more and rest for the sake of my health. However I lack discipline and find myself incessantly packing my bags for trips abroad. Rather than walking my dogs in the forest, I spend hours sitting in planes traveling to Los Angeles, London or Nice to join friends and partners. These days, you focus on special projects. How are these looking in the 45th edition? Very promising. For this commemorative edition, I have naturally gone for projects that contain an historical element and Carlos Santana and B.B. King had to be part of that. For decades now, they have performed at Montreux and given to the festival some unforgettable moments. I am proud that Carlos has committed to three shows, and B.B. King will play two consecutive evenings. What a beautiful sign of friendship! I am particularly looking forward to the different tributes to Miles Davis, 6 Tommy LiPuma and the Tommy Boy label. All of them will be equally exciting. In July 1991 Miles Davis gave his final concert at Montreux – two months before his death. That was barely 20 years ago. I am, of course, also looking forward to the Rock evening with Deep Purple, who will be accompanied by a symphony orchestra. They will wrap up this edition with the festival‘s veritable anthem: “Smoke on the Water”. That’s a crazy story, just how I like them. Does the programme not risk looking too much to the past? Given the history of the festival, I believe it is not a risk but, rather, a privilege. And this year, as in previous years, recent music has not been left out. By featuring the likes of Paolo Nutini, Arcade Fire, Milow or Aloe Blacc, the festival presents artists who influence the current musical landscape with much talent and success. I am very attached to this diversity and actually it is partly this combination of legends and new discoveries – blending styles and generations – that has enabled the festival to retain its uniqueness for 45 years. Carlos Santana July 1, 2 and 3 The Mexican guitarist’s first ever appearance on a stage at Montreux was very nearly cancelled. It was 1970 and Carlos Santana was held up in Italy after all of the musical equipment from his tour had been confiscated by the organisers of a concert where he performed. They demanded reimbursement for the damage some of his crazier fans had caused in the concert hall. Claude Nobs calmed things down by giving the organizers 5000 dollars, thus enabling the artist to perform his powerful latin rock for the first time at Montreux. That concert perpetuated the festival’s shift towards different musical genres, which, along with the previous year’s appearance of British rock band Ten Year After, was sparking disapproval from the critics. Since then, Carlos Santana and Claude Nobs have repeated this crossbreeding of genres; the guitarist, eager for new experiences, has met up with blues, pop and world music artists at Montreux. For this year’s festival, the music-savvy pair have shown boundless imagination. On July 1 for the opening night of the festival, Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin will perform for the first time ever their 1973 album “Love, Devotion and Surrender” on the Auditorium Stravinski stage. Their jazz fusion played with a breath of spirituality will revive, for just one evening, the spirit of the 1970s with the evocative title: “Invitation to Illumination”. The following night, Santana will play some of his greatest hits of the last decades and on July 3 he is to appear as a special guest in the show entitled “B.B. King: Welcome to the Chairman of the Board”. This year will be the ninth time Carlos Santana has performed in Montreux and on this anniversary edition he will therefore play three nights. B.B. King July 2 and 3 Even today, festival-goers still remember the jam session B.B. King gave them in the Auditorium Stravinski in 2006. The king of blues sat on his throne centre-stage, surrounded by Randy Crawford, Gladys Knight, Barbara Hendricks, Leela James and Earl Thomas. The likes of Joe Sample, George Duke and David Sanborn also accompanied them. On stage the atmosphere was electric and shudders were felt among the audience on more than one occasion. B.B. King often cancelled his promotional meetings to partake in workshops and more often than not would confirm his participation in these free events before even confirming a date for his concert. The blues guitarist has always made a point of meeting young musicians and fans alike: rare are artists so generous with their public. This 2011 edition will mark his 20th time performing at Montreux since his first concert here in 1979, and he will play two nights in a row. On July 2, in the intimate atmosphere of the Miles Davis Hall, the artist will be able to unleash the full force of his blues. On July 3, however, B.B. King will need a more spacious stage as “Chairman of the Board”, when he invites Paolo Nutini, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi and Robert Randolph to join him at the Auditorium Stravinski. And for the first time his blues guitar will meet the sound of Carlos Santana’s. A moment of pure happiness is on the cards. 7 SPECIAL PROJECTS SPECIAL PROJECTS HONOUR WHERE HONOUR IS DUE TRIBUTE MILES DAVIS & ORCHESTRES À MONTREUX Orchestras at Montreux: amplified melodies The group Deep Purple can be considered pioneers: on September 24, 1969 the rock quintet performed the “Concerto for Group and Orchestra” with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, thereby audaciously and successfully marrying classical music and hard rock across the great divide that separates them. The integration of stringed instruments gave to this occasion intensity and unexpected depth to Deep Purple’s piercing melodies without stripping them of their force. It is with great virtuosity that classically-trained organ-player Jon Lord was able to bring together the band and the orchestra. Thirty years on, this experiment will once again be attempted with the support of illustrious guests Ronnie James Dio and Sam Brown. This time the band will of course also play their hit “Smoke on the Water”, which constitutes a masterpiece in itself. On July 16 Deep Purple will perform with a symphony orchestra for the grand finale night of the 45th Montreux Jazz Festival. More than 50 musicians will thus for one evening transform the Auditorium Stravinsky into a temple of rock! Jazz and pop music producer Tommy LiPuma celebrates his 75th birthday at Montreux. Meanwhile, Tom Silverman reviews the history of hip-hop for the 30th anniversary of his label Tommy Boy. By way of homage to Atlantic Records founders Nesuhi and Ahmet Ertegün or to Chris Blackwell, creator of Island Records, the Montreux Jazz Festival from its inception has also feted those great talents who sometimes remain in the shadows of the music world. These have included producers who have taken the risks of entrepreneurs by adventurously going down new artistic routes, thereby carving out the musical landscape as well as the industry. With Tommy LiPuma and Tom Silverman, the spotlight in 2011 falls on two icons who, while sharing the same first name, have led two completely different careers. Tommy LiPuma’s 75th Birthday July 5 Tommy LiPuma was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 5 1936. The American producer will celebrate his 75th year while in Montreux, surrounded by artists he has successfully accompanied throughout the decades: Randy Crawford, Dr. John, Diana Krall and George Benson. His rhythm section will be no less exceptional, comprising Joe Sample, Larry Goldings, Christian McBride and Lewis Nash. As well as enjoying a career spanning more than 40 years, Tommy LiPuma has been nominated 30 times for Grammys, winning this prestigious award three times: in 1976 for “Breezin” by George Benson, in 1991 for Natalie Cole’s rendition of “Unforgettable” and again in 1999 for “When I look in your Eyes” by Diana Krall. Eighteen gold and platinum records have followed his first big hit “Guantanamera” by the Sandpipers in 1966. One of these albums will play a significant role at Montreux this year. On July 4 as an enticing appetizer to what will be LiPuma’s birthday event, George Benson, accompanied by an orchestra, will perform his acclaimed album “Breezin” for the first time. 8 Thirty years of Tommy Boy: Hip hop plays centre stage July 15 If one had to find the common denominator between all the artists who will be present at the hip hop event in the Auditorium Stravinski, it would have to be Tom Silverman. For it is through his label Tommy Boy Records, which will celebrate its 30th year while at Montreux, that the crème de la crème of “old school” stage performers have been able to dominate the top of the charts. Since the early 1990s, many of them have written hits whose beats and lyrics will forever remain engraved in our minds. From sonic explorers such as Afrika Bambaataa to hit makers Coolio, Naughty by Nature as well as the unequalled flow of MCs from Digital Underground, not forgetting the dance floor hymn “Jump Around” by House of Pain - all the ingredients are there for a hip hop celebration worthy of its name on this anniversary event. As a throwback to 27 years ago when street artist Keith Haring painted frescoes on stage at the Montreux Casino while Bill Laswell’s group Material performed, the “Tommy Boys” are to surround themselves with dancers and graffiti artists. The show is to be orchestrated by turntable maestro Prince Paul in person. It’s difficult to imagine a better line-up when honouring a movement that has marked several generations and has never lost its musical and on-stage prowess. Sting and George Benson will also follow Deep Purple’s example this year. On July 11 Sting will stop off at Montreux with his group and, as an entourage, an orchestra of 45 musicians under the direction of Sarah Hicks. He will showcase his most popular songs, with symphony arrangements accompanying Police hits such as “Roxanne”, “Every Breath you take”, as well as his tracks “Englishman in New York” and “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You” and “Desert Rose” which he wrote as a solo artist. George Benson’s orchestra, however, is to comprise a mere 31 musicians and on July 4 the guitarist will play live and for the first time his highly-acclaimed album “Breezin” – and only in Montreux. Sixteen violins, six violas, six cellos and three double-basses are to accompany him. Whether to play rock, pop or soul jazz, all the orchestras performing have one thing in common: they will all be recreating songs that constitute the classics of modern day popular music. July 4, 11 and 16 July 13 For the 20th anniversary of his death: a tribute to Miles Davis On July 8 1991, Miles Davis performed for the 10th and last time at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Despite his weakening health, it was a triumph. Accompanied by the Gil Evans Orchestra under the direction of Quincy Jones, he played songs as unforgettable as “Summertime”, “Blues For Pablo” and “Miles Ahead”. The Picasso of Jazz – to name just one of many nicknames used to try and describe his genius – managed time and time again to extract from his instrument sounds that never before had been heard. Thanks to his electrifying virtuosity and legendary penchant for improvisation, Miles Davis can be considered one of the most influential musicians of all time. Barely two months after his historical finale at Montreux, he died in Santa Monica, California. For the 20th anniversary since his passing the Festival, which already organized two concerts in his honour in 1992 and 2001, will on this occasion pay him a unique tribute under the artistic direction of Marcus Miller. The bass player owes his own success to Miles Davis, with whom he played for the first time in 1981. In the years they worked together, their collaboration intensified and the duo ended up playing on three albums: “Tutu” in 1986, the soundtrack for the 1987 film “Siesta” and “Amandla” in 1989. Saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Herbie Hancock will also take part in this tribute evening. Both had the occasion to play alongside the saxophone legend in the 1960s. Hancock remembers him with respect: “I was 23 and was very frightened of Miles. He gave us the freedom to do what we wanted. He changed my life”. No artist has stood on the stages of the festival more than Herbie Hancock and this tribute concert will mark his 27th appearance at the event. As well as this eminent trio, two more jazz musicians will contribute to this year’s homage: bass player Sean Rickman and Sean Jones, the young 33-year-old trumpet-player from Ohio who fell in love with the instrument thanks to Miles Davis’ “Tutu” and “Kind of Blue” albums. 9 HIGHLIGHTS WEDNESDAY JULY 6 AUDITORIUM STRAVINSKI THURSDAY JULY 7 AUDITORIUM STRAVINSKI SUNDAY JULY 10 AUDITORIUM STRAVINSKI WEDNESDAY JULY 6 MILES DAVIS HALL THURSDAY JULY 7 MILES DAVIS HALL FRIDAY JULY 8 MILES DAVIS HALL RICKY MARTIN PAOLO NUTINI ARCADE FIRE TROMBONE SHORTY MILOW With over 15 million records sold worldwide and numerous Grammys, Ricky Martin, has exploded in the late 90s with his hits «Un, Dos, Tres» and «Livin La Vida Loca». In 2011, he is back with a very anticipated album Musica Alma Sexo whose two first singles «The Best Thing About Me Is You» and «Lo Mejor De Mi Vida Eres Tu» have been international sensations. Paolo Nutini is an Irish singer, composer and songwriter who took his influences from Bowie, Oasis and even Ray Charles and Van Morrison. While only 19, he made his debut in 2009 and received critical acclaims with the album These Streets. With a particular and dynamic voice, his melancholic and provocative songs and a real skill on stage, Nutini asserts himself as a full-fledged artist. Montreal based indie rock band Arcade Fire came to prominence when they released their debut album Funeral in 2004 to critical acclaim. Arcade Fire began mining an eclectic mix of bossa nova, punk, French chanson, and classically tinged pop music. Their third album The Suburbs, arrived on August 2, 2010. and won the Award for Best International Album at the 2011 BRIT and Grammy Awards. Multi-instrumentalist, Trombone Shorty is the kind of player who comes along maybe once in a generation. His new album, Backatown is a mix of rock, funk, jazz, hip-hop and soul. He had to create his own name to describe his signature sound: Supafunkrock! In 2010, he released Commitment, another wonderful album. Smooth voice, elegant groove, romantic ballads and silky arrangements: the Prince of Black Music will perform at the Stravinski Hall and offer us the best of the genre. Best known for his success as part of the duo Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon began his solo career in 1971. He recorded three highly-acclaimed albums over the next five years, and released in 1986 his greatest single, «Graceland». Through his solo and collaborative work, Simon has earned 13 Grammys, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. Being a constant changing character, looking like a strange and flashy rockstar, Bootsy Collins is a funk bassist, singer and composer. Beginning as backing band for James Brown, Bootsy and the Rubber Band are also members of Funkadelic, formed by George Clinton in the 60s. The Scottish band Mogwai became one of the most influential and exposed post-rock band thanks to their debut album, Young Team in 1997. On February 2011, they released a new album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. No need to introduce her, we are honored to welcome the famous actress, dancer and singer from hollywood for an unmissable night at the Miles Davis Hall! And all that Jazz! As the daughter of celebrated crooner Nat King Cole, Natalie was exposed to the greats of jazz, soul and blues at an early age. In 1976, she earned the Grammys for the Best New Artist, but she obtained her biggest success in 1991 with Unforgettable. Her latest album, Still Unforgettable, includes a virtual duo with her father «Walkin’ My Baby Back Home». Swiss German native, Andreas Vollenweider is a genius atypical harpist that got to be known among Europe in the 80s with aerial compositions and electrifying improvisations. Floating music that will make you travel! Milow is the alias of Belgian singer/ songwriter Jonathan Vandenbroeck, who broke through to national mainstream success in 2007 with the number three hit single «You Don’t Know.» Extracted from his full-length album debut The Bigger Picture, the single became a major hit, climbing all the way to number three on the Belgian singles chart and quickly spread to the rest of Europe. In 2011, Milow released an new opus North and South. 11 HIGHLIGHTS 45 EDITIONS, 45 RPM, 45 DEGREES SWISS-FRENCH ARTIST FRANCIS BAUDEVIN ON THE 45TH MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL POSTER RAIN DOGS REVISITED July 11 Inspired by Tom Waits’ classic album Featuring Arthur H, The Tiger Lillies, Camille O’ Sullivan, Stef Kamil Carlens, St. Vincent, Erika Stucky. Rain Dogs, released in 1985, is an object of fascination for Tom Waits fans. In a very personal evocation of the New York slums, the album’s nineteen tracks impress us with their variety, borrowing from cabaret, polka, jazz, rock and even spoken poetry. The use of numerous instruments adds to the album’s character: pianos and organs, saxophones, trumpets and trombones, drums, marimba and congas, and of course, guitars and accordions. This concert takes us back through the album integrally, though quite freely. Especially brought together for this event, a prestigious band will offer a similar, although not quite identical, array of the rich instrumental variety intended by Waits. David Coulter, the multiinstrumentalist who worked with Tom Waits on The Black Rider, will be the concert’s musical director. Richness and freedom will also be guidelines for the artists who will bring the album’s lyrics to life. Though Arthur H sings with a husky voice recalling that of Tom Waits, the other soloists rather take the opposite course. Those who do so in particular are the female artists like the exuberant Irish singer, Camille O’Sullivan who has already tried her hand at Tom Waits’ repertoire in her unbridled cabaret rock shows; there is also the American St Vincent who brings a whole new outlook to the lyrics, presenting them in expurgated versions; and the Swiss American singer Erika Stucky, known for her soul-rock yodeling and her eccentric musical revivals. On the other hand, the Belgian singer and guitarist of Zita Swoon Stef Kamil Carlens, and the British trio The Tiger Lillies, who are fond of rare and strange instruments and whose musical universe is, like Rain Dogs, inspired by Kurt Weill, will take the performance to another unexpected level, faithful in this to both the spirit and the letter of Tom Waits’ piece of work. 12 Francis Baudevin sees the circle as a musical shape. For the 45th edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival, the artist arranges circles in rhythmical successions. His poster is striking and leaves viewers free to make all kinds of associations. Some see dice, others musical bars on a stave or even Swiss cheeses. BRASIL! July 9 Ana Carolina Francis Baudevin is one of the leading representatives of contemporary art in Switzerland. In 2009, he was won the Geneva Arts Society Award. The artist lives in Lausanne and lectures on the interaction between music and the visual arts at ECAL, Lausanne University of Art and Design. Ana Carolina is a Brasilian singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. Her music repertoire ranges from Brasilian Popular Music to Pop Rock including Samba and Bossa Nova. She has recorded 9 albums since her beginning in 1999 and won numerous prizes including 4 at the Brasilian Music Multishow Awards. In 2005 she also recorded a concert album: Ana & Jorje: Ao Vivo, with Seu Jorge. Maria Gadu Maria Gadu is a young talented woman from Sao Paulo, Brazil, who plays acoustic guitar and sings in Portuguese with a ravishing voice. She gained fame in 2009 when she amazed a large public with her musical skills after playing several shows in Rio de Janeiro. At 25, she has been writing and recording her music for 12 years. You live in Lausanne and are familiar with the Montreux Jazz Festival. Is it easier for a Swiss artist to design the Festival poster? No, I would say it’s an even greater challenge. I’m in awe of all my famous predecessors – Tinguely, Warhol, Bill, as well as Opie and Armleder, whom I know personally and have great admiration for. But the pressure does not only come from those artists – it’s to do with showing that I’m worthy of all the incredible musical talents that have marked the Festival. Recently, I discovered by chance a real gem of a concert on YouTube: my favourite guitarist Sonny Sharrock improvising with Bill Laswell and a DJ, while Keith Haring painted a large format canvas in the background. That was in 1983 and, of course, it was in Montreux. Music is a recurrent theme in your art. I love vinyl records. The shape, the material, the sleeve – it all fascinates me. Also, I’m convinced that we experience music differently with that medium. The listener learns more about the dramaturgy of the album, is more aware of the duration of the songs and their interaction. In my studio, there is always music playing, but on CDs for practical reasons. Was music an inspiration for the poster? The division into four parts and the recurring shape of the circle produce a visual and rhythmical encounter. I see the circle as a very musical shape, which is found in many instruments. The arrangement of circles at 45 degrees represents the 45th Festival, but also the 45rpm single, with its circular hole in the middle. I’m interested in the relationship between the background and the motif too, especially when the background becomes the actual motif. Your painting reminds some people of a Swiss cheese. How do you respond to that? (laughs) I imagine that Claude Nobs must really like that comparison. At the end of the day, the Festival bears the “Made in Switzerland” label and enjoys worldwide fame. It’s a top quality cultural export – like Swiss cheese. There are obvious similarities. 13 2011 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MONTREUX JAZZ! SATURDAY JULY 2 Junior « Jazz » by Matisse In 1947 Henri Matisse created some artistic works entitled “Jazz” inspired by the energy and rhythm of this musical genre. Within it cohabit collages, drawings, but also writings and musical references. An excellent body of work to inspire collaboration between students from varied disciplines and colleges (Haute Ecole de Musique, Haute Ecole de Théâtre et Ecole des Arts Appliqués de Vevey). Montreux Palace. SUNDAY JULY 3 For the first time the Montreux Jazz 2 Foundation is presenting an evening at the Miles Davis Hall entirely dedicated to the pianists who have participated in the piano solo competitions. Can you tell us a bit more about that? There is always a large audience attending the semi-finals and finals of our competitions, but I think that including these young pianists on the bill at the Miles Davis Hall will give them extra exposure. These young musicians, who are also composers, come from the four corners of the earth. This year we will therefore have the great fortune of welcoming on stage Tigran Hamasyan, the Armenian who won our competition aged 16 in 2003 and has just released a record in the Verve label catalogue. We will also have a chance to rediscover 2005 winner Harold Lopez Nussa, part of a large family of Cuban musicians. He just won the ADAMI (Society for the collective administration of performers’ rights) bursary alongside Alfredo Rodriguez, who was discovered by Quincy Jones during the 2006 semi-finals. How would you describe the ethos of the activities presented by the Foundation Montreux Jazz 2 in 2011? To encourage curiosity! Our projects entitled “Eastern Delights” will expose the Turkish contemporary music scene to a large audience on the occasion of a day dedicated to this genre in Vernet park. The great eastern composers, many of whom chose the Swiss Riviera as a haven for creation, will be honoured on the programme with “Jazz meets Classic”. In addition the young will once again be craftsmen, by re-interpreting the opera Carmen plus performing a multi-artist rendition of the work “Jazz” by painter Matisse. 16 Is there a project that you are particularly fond of? Living on the Riviera where one talks a lot about the Pole Paderewski, I am looking forward to listening to a first ever live Carte Blanche performance based on his works. Will the local patrimony be once again highlighted? Junior « Carmen » by and for adolescents A reinterpretation and recreation of “Carmen” by the Riviera Conservatory’s young musicians. Diverse musical styles: classical of course but also jazz, rap and electro will be played in combination so as to bring out the opera’s modernity. Montreux Palace. THURSDAY JULY 7 Jazz meets Classic Yes it will. After paying tribute to Stravinsky, Nabokov, Byron and Ravel, we are once again the instigators of projects that privilege the elevation of our local heritage. How many people are aware that our region once hosted many artists and that our vistas represented a major source of inspiration in European creative culture in the 19th and 20th centuries? The Cartes Blanches events based on the works of Paderewski and Tchaikovsky will honour this past while bringing them into our era through improvisations that will bring out their modernity. Carte Blanche based around Tschaikowski In another style, students from the MontreuxVevey-Riviera Conservatory will, as is the custom, be the craftsmen of a show which they have chosen and have also worked on since the start of the school year. They will add to it their own flavour. As for the Tremplin Lemanique, this event is in its fourth edition and has therefore completed its first triennial cycle. In 2011, jazz will once again be its genre of choice, following rock and electro in the previous editions. Its continued aim will be, once again, to create a dialogue between musicians from different cultures whose common horizon is on Lake Geneva! Carte Blanche around Paderevski Piano: Guzal Karieva, Violin: Dmitry Kogan This concerto for piano and violin was entirely composed in Clarens: a nice way of revealing our local heritage while allowing our “classical music” audience to savour the charms of improvisation. Château de Chillon. FRIDAY JULY 8 Jazz meets Classic The Polish composer and pianist Paderewski lived a long time in our region (1896-1902) and although a few streets are named after him, he is relatively unknown and seldom played. This Carte Blanche offers the opportunity to discover the modern nature of his work. 3 Couronnes Hotel, Vevey. SATURDAY JULY 9 Miles Davis Hall The Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition presents : Jazz Club with Harold Lopez Nussa Trio (winner 2005), Tigran Hamasyan (winner 2003) and Alfredo Rodriguez (discovered by Quincy Jones in 2006 during the semi finals). 17 EAT YOUR MEAL WITH YOUR FEET IN THE WATER NEW FOOD AND BEVERAGE STANDS This year the Montreux Jazz Festival expands its food offering by creating more dining areas on the lakeside. TREMPLIN LÉMANIQUE WORKSHOPS Parc Vernex, the setting of Music in the Park, is a great place for enjoying various types of music. Jazz invades the park from the early afternoon, then it’s over to other musical genres. A programme of rock, pop, funk, blues and world music ensures there is something for everybody. The groups scheduled are mostly unknown to the general public but are making their names as emerging artists. In its eleventh year of existence, the Montreux Jazz Young Planet is once again – for the duration of the Montreux Jazz Festival - an activities and prevention area for preadolescent and adolescent girls and boys, whether they live in and around Montreux, or come from wider abroad. There is no admittance fee and no need to sign up in advance. The Montreux Jazz Festival and the Conseil de Léman (Council of Lake Geneva) have jointly launched this competition in order to put the spotlight on musical groups from the Lake Geneva region. In this way, a real springboard will be offered to young talent, with the groups being invited to appear within the framework of the Montreux Jazz Festival. This competition offers them an exceptional opportunity to become better known by a knowledgeable, international public. So that each style of music will be represented and judged under the best possible conditions, it has been decided to organise this competition in a rotating manner, with one style of music being chosen each year. It was jazz that had the first shot in the 2008 edition, Rock in 2009, Electro in 2010, and it’s the turn of jazz again in 2011! There is a rare bond between some musicians and their public. How else can these remarkable moments of intimacy be explained? The principle is simple: the artists are given a free hand to meet the public. A technical demonstration, a debate, an explanation of their own career path - they all choose their own way of expressing themselves. The workshop hosts are artists featuring on the official programme and they do not receive a fee. It is difficult to know whether it is the musicians or the public who appreciate these moments the most. Special days highlight themes or countries by devoting part of their programmes to them. Here are a few examples for this year: «Carte Blanche»: On July 4 Lausanne’s College of Music (HEMU) will distinguish itself by showcasing its best bands for an overview of musical genres. Italia Wave: In collaboration with l’Italia Love Festival, “Après la Classe” and “Nidi d’Arac” will join us from Puglia on July 5 to demonstrate their modern interpretation of Tarantella. Brazil: As tradition dictates, Brazilian music genres will be in the limelight on Saturday July 9 comprising, among others, four bands including a students big band. «Carte Blanche»: This time by Zurich’s University of the Arts (ZHdK). Those bands judged the best will qualify for a repeat performance on the Music in the Park stage on July 11. Eastern Delights: This year, Turkey is the guest of honour with two bands that will take us on a musical journey of oriental sonorities, made possible thanks to the support of the Turkish embassy in Switzerland. A smoke-and-alcohol-free zone, the Montreux Jazz Young Planet has become part and parcel of the Jazz Festival, a safe meeting place for young people who are in this way kept secure from the risks inherent to a more adult-oriented event. Open throughout the Jazz Festival Monday to Friday from 5pm to midnight, and Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to midnight, the venue, located on the “place de l’Eurovision” (site of the lake steamer jetty) in Montreux, boasts a range of leisure activities and an soft-drink-only bar where young festival-goers can discover the art of bartending. During opening hours the Young Planet is staffed by qualified youth workers who are permanently on hand. From 8pm onwards music rules: DJs, disco lights, karaoke, dance displays and various shows run till midnight. These evening events are mainly for 13to 18-year-olds. A foretaste of the programme will be available from June 20th on www.montreuxjeunesse.ch More information at: www.myspace.com/tremplinlemanique www.conseilduleman.org ACADEMIA The didactic movement that started in 2008 is taken one step further this year. Workshops are devoted to encounters between music and science, in partnership with Geneva University and the CHUV (Centre Hospitalier Universitare Vaudois = Vaud Central University Hospital in Lausanne). Without attempting to take away any of the mystery or beauty of music, different perspectives are explored, allowing participants and scientists to reflect on the relationship between the emotions and the body. COMPETITIONS The 42 nationalities represented among the candidates in the previous edition demonstrated the keen international interest aroused by the competition. The voice and piano competitions are a great opportunity for young professional musicians to let their talent explode and to meet each other, and the juries of both categories are composed of well-known international musicians. The winners form a band – Montreux Jazz on the Road – which tours Europe’s biggest jazz festivals. Last year’s winners will open for Natalie Cole in the Miles Davis Hall on the 10th July. Solo Piano Competition Winner 2010: Nikolay Sidorenko (Russia) Jazz Voice Competition Winner 2010: Sanem Kalfa (Turkey) With the support of: NIGHTLIFE The Montreux Jazz Café and the Studio 41 will of course continue to bring you the latest sounds. 22 23 FACTS & FIGURES PARTNERS BUDGET 2011 2010 Number of bands in the venues charging an admission fee : 90 Number of free concerts and DJs : 260 21 million Swiss Francs HUMAN RESSOURCES Permanent office Permanent staff: 20 people From April to July: 36 people Revenues 2% 3% 6% 40% 24% Ticketing Sponsoring F&B TV Merchandising Other 23% STAFF Number of sectors: 33 Number of staff members:1272 Indicators : Women 46% – Men 54% Swiss 71% – European Union 29% Between 18 to 60 years-old, average age: 27 Students: 44% - Employee: 27% - Others: 29% 45% of the staff members come back at least two years in a row PRODUCTION 150 people, including 40 for TV production Total hours worked (setting-up, Festival, dismantling) : 37,000 Expenses 8% 23% 40% 2% 3% 8% 16% Main venues Infrastructure F&B TV Merchandising Logistic Staff Total number of visitor in 2009 on 16 days: 230’000 people.
