High-Point Western Horse and Oscar Crigler Cattle Horse Article and Photo by Rachel Florman | Paint Horse Journal | November 15, 2014 Gay Bar Lucky Jac won the 2014 APHA World Championship Show's High-Point Western Horse and Oscar Crigler Cattle Horse awards. Gay Bar Lucky Jac took his new age division—and two high-point titles—in stride. For some horses, the transition from Junior to Senior classes can be a bit of a challenge, especially when it comes to the high stakes of the APHA World Championship Show. Gay Bar Lucky Jac, however, took the new challenges in stride with trainer Jack Wright of Penrose, Colorado. “Spike,” a 2008 bay tobiano stallion by Sugs Tru Luck and out of Gay Melody, is owned by Jarvis and Christina Abbey of Wind River Performance Horses in Parachute, Colorado. Though the couple was excited for their stallion’s first World Show as a Senior horse, they weren’t expecting such whirlwind success. “We actually chose to stay home instead of coming to Fort Worth to watch Spike because we thought it was going to be a bit of a transition year,” Christina said. “But I guess he didn’t have much of a transition!” Taking everything in stride, Spike picked up a world championship in Senior Steer Stopping and two reserve world championships in Senior Heeling and Senior Tie-Down Roping. “Our run in the steer stopping was great,” Jack said. “He scored well, blew to the cow, gave me a great shot and just drug his hind; I couldn’t have asked him to work any better. “I always try to do the best job that I can and ask my horses to show to the best of their ability. [Spike] definitely did just that.” For more coverage from the 2014 APHA World Championship Show, read the January 2015 issue of the Paint Horse Journal.
