SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS RESTRICTIONS PUT

BOMBAY HIGH COURT

MUMBAI: Janmashtami, which celebrates the
birth of Lord Krishna is also popularly known as
the Dahi Handi festival, in which a human pyramid
is formed to break an earthen pot filled with curd
and installed with a rope several storeys high.
Typically, the festival is celebrated with much
gusto with teams travelling across Mumbai to
form human pyramids and get the prize money
for breaking the 'handi'. However, this year may
see the festival being toned down a bit as the
Supreme Court has upheld the restrictions put on
the celebrations imposed
by the Bombay High
Court.
The most important
restriction is the limit on
the height of the human
pyramid, which cannot be
above 20 feet. Thus, now
a four-tier human pyramid would be maximum
allowed which will reach the 20 feet limit. In the past
there have been nine-tier pyramid where the prize
money in breaking the handi ran into lakhs.
Also, the Bombay High Court had restricted the
age of participants in dahi handi to 18 years. The
Supreme Court recommended the minimum age to
be restricted to 12 years. Earlier years have seen
minors as young as 9-10 year olds balancing
precariously at the top of the pyramid. The state
government has declared that no child below 12
years can participate in the event, and the others
will have to submit a letter of approval from their
parents.
Apart from these, the high court has directed
that no road should be entirely occupied by the
festival. Ganesh Bagwe, a govinda, questioned how
was it possible to restrict the festival to half a road.
"The rope on which handi is tied, is on buildings or
trees or lamp posts on either side of the road. How
will a handi be tied if only half of the road is to be
used?" asked Bagwe.
Besides giving various directions to ensure safety
of the govindas, the HC had also appealed to the
organizers to give more importance to the health
and safety of the participants. For better safety of
govindas, the HC has given various directions to the
organizers of dahi handis and also the mandals,
which take teams of govindas to break the dahi
handi. The number of permissions required to be
obtained has been increased from 3 to 19.
A local organiser, who did not wished to be
named, said that with many restrictions in place it
will be a costlier affair to organise the festival.
"Earlier we and the groups used to ensure safety of

MUMBAI: There is a drought like
situation in Maharashtra state due
to inadequate rain but at other
hand, the consumption of water in
Mantralaya has increased manifold.
The water and electricity bill in
Maharashtra's power centre
Mantralaya is on an upward trend.
Around three years ago, a fire
broke out in Mantralaya. Prior to
this, the electricity bill used to come
up to Rs1.50 crore to Rs 2 crore
annually. Similarly, the water bill
used to be around Rs 75 lakh to Rs
80 lakh annually.
In the year 2013-14, the
electricity bill of Mantralaya was
Rs.4crore 88 lakh. However, in its
corresponding year (2014-15), the
billing cycle of which is not over, the
electricity bill has already touched
Rs.7 crore 16 lakh. The final
expenses at the year-end would be
mind boggling. The state
government is under tremendous
pressure for the increasing
electricity bill.
Similarly, the water bill is also a
cause of concern for the state
government. The water bill of
Mantralaya for the year 2013-14
was Rs.1crore 23 lakh. Surprisingly
the same for the year 2014-15 is Rs
9crore 76 lakh.
A senior PWD official, on the
condition of anonymity said, “Due
to repairing and refurbishing work,
the water bill has gone up. Once the
construction work completes, the
water bill will automatically reduce.”
Chandrakant Deshmukh, a social
worker said, “There is no control or
supervision on contractors by PWD
officials so the water bill is bound to
be high. If there is a strict vigil on
water consumption by contractors,
it can be reduced dramatically.
Similarly Mantralaya has switched
over to complete centrally air
conditioned office, the electricity bill
is going to rise.”

space to park an ambulance on the
road and secondly it will be

who has been organising dahi handi

Jitendra Awhad, Nationalist
Congress Party leader and organizer
of one of the biggest Dahi handi in
Thane, has cancelled his event, citing
the drought in Maharashtra. It was
the much sought after handi with
prize money of few lakhs. Given the
paucity of water in the city and the
errant rainfall this monsoon, others
would be well advised to follow his
example or at least restrict the
wastage of potable water during the
festival. Let the festivities glow with a
social conscience this year!
PIL Against Hawkers outside
NM, Mithibai College
ILLEGAL HAWKERS ARE BEING REMOVED REGULARLY BY CARRYING OUT SPECIAL DRIVES
BEING CONDUCTED BY THE BMC, CLAIMS THE CIVIC BODY
SM KABEER/MM
Janhavi Samant
VILE PARLE: The Bombay High Court
will decide the fate of illegal hawkers
outside the NM College. A division
bench of the Bombay HC recently
reserved order in a Public Interest
Litigation (PIL) seeking removal of
the hawkers saying it causes
inconvenience to people.
The PIL was filed by NGO, Janhit
Manch and its convener Bhagwanji
Rayani. Rayani contended that 30 to
35 illegal stalls are located on
Gulmohar Road, between Mithibai
College and RN Cooper Hospital.
These stalls are on the footpath,
inconveniencing pedestrians, the PIL
contended, adding, "Also, the stalls
have come up after 1985 and, hence,
as per the corporation's policy, they
cannot be (considered) legal."
Dharni Mehta, a resident of the
area, said that it was inconvenient to
move around with many hawkers
blocking the footpath. "There is no
place to move around. Often we have
to walk on the road where autos ply
without following any traffic rules,
"she said.
Although several people may look
at hawkers, many of whom are
vending road-side food, as menace,
they (hawkers) are boon for students
who study in the colleges in the area
and spend long hours in these
institutes. Dhaval Shah, a student,
said that apart from regular lectures
they have to stay back in college to
complete their projects. "It is not
feasible to carry more than one meal
in a tiffin. Anyway, we have so many
books and documents, that our bags
get very heavy. At such times we
prefer having hot food on the road
side stalls. Because it is warm it is
safer option as well," he said.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC) which issues
licenses for hawking has contended
that they conduct regular checks on
hawkers and take action against
those who are illegal. Illegal hawkers
are being removed regularly by
carrying out special drives being
conducted by the BMC, claimed the
civic body.
However, that doesn't seem to be
enough as the numbers of hawkers
are increasing. "If the BMC would
have been stricter and would impose
a hefty fine then the illegal hawkers
would not thrive," added Mehta.
In April, the HC had restrained the
BMC from issuing fresh licenses to
hawkers on the road until further
orders. The HC had also directed the
municipal commissioner to appoint
an officer not below the rank of
deputy municipal commissioner to
supervise and monitor the removal.
The high court, accordingly, directed
the civic body to carry out a special
drive against illegal hawkers since as
per the rules hawkers are not allowed
within 100 metres of educational and
medical institutions.
It is not a debate of whether
hawkers are a menace or a boon to
some - but more a question of what is
correct from a legal standpoint.

Andheri Station To
Get First Aid Clinic
ANDHERI 03
MORE THAN 3,000 COMMUTERS LOSE THEIR LIVES ACROSS THE
THREE SUBURBAN TRAIN LINES IN ACCIDENTS, HALF OF WHICH DIE
DUE TO INEFFICIENT AND DELAYED MEDICAL TREATMENT
Vibha Singh
ANDHERI: Thousands of passengers walk in and
out of railway stations in Mumbai every day. God
help them should they have a medical
emergency. A majority of the stations on the
Western line lack basic emergency medical care
facilities. The railway authority has decided to
start first-aid clinics on Public Private Partnership
(PPP) across major suburban stations in Mumbai
and Thane.
Sonia Khare, a regular commuter from
Andheri Station said, “I had fallen down from the
staircase last week and injured my ankle. The
railway official staff kept searching for a bandage
as they told me that it was not in stock and thus I
had to go with my friend to the local doctor.” The
first aid box should contain 66 items and kept at
each of the Mumbai Suburban stations to render
first aid to injured. The service was initialized for
the people since the year 1998 after the Bombay
High Court's direction to keep one first aid box.
Every year, more than 3,000 commuters lose
their lives across the three suburban train lines in
accidents during their travel. Out of the 3,000,
half of the victims die due to inefficient and
delayed medical treatment. Social activist
Sameer Zaveri said that an injured person needs
medical aid within the first hour of accident.
Several die due to excessive bleeding. Two kinds
of cases are reported — medical (dehydration,
fever, dizziness, abdominal pain and chest pain)
and trauma (fall from height, fall on the
platform and train traffic accidents). Labour pain,
food poisoning and injuries while crossing tracks
are also reported. Though setting up medical
units at all stations may not be possible, facilities
for stabilisation of emergency patients could be
provided, he said.
A senior government doctor said first-aid
facilities, including provision of intravenous
fluids, are a must at every station. The Railways
said that it was also taking steps to invite tenders
to set up dedicated ambulance services for these
EMRs. "The stationmasters have been trained in
administering first aid and have been asked to
call ambulances to take victims to the nearest
hospital," the Railways stated.
These first-aid clinics will provide free of cost
medical service and treatment across stations
like Andheri, Borivali, Kandivali, Malad,
Goregaon, Vile Parle, Santacruz and Bandra. A
fully-equipped ambulance will also be a part of
the first-aid clinics on these stations that will take
the injured to the nearest hospital. At present,
the railway board is working on the finance
aspect of the PPP-model. The Railways said that
it was also taking steps to invite tenders to set up
dedicated ambulance services for these EMRs.
"The stationmasters have been trained in
administering first aid and have been asked to
call ambulances to take victims to the nearest
hospital till the time new model is finalised," the
Railways stated.

DESPITE VALID COMPLAINTS AND THE GOVERNMENT'S OWN CLEANLINESS DRIVE

These squatters have the

area
DR KANTA MUKHERJEE

SEVEN BUNGALOWS: What happens to law abiding
citizens who pay their taxes and follow the letter of the
law when it comes to parking regulations etc? Well, if
you are living at Vineet Tower in Andheri, you have to
deal with the menace of squatters who will practically
block the entry to your building!
Such is the sad fate of residents of Vineet Towers.
The area outside the building boundary walls has been
occupied by squatters for several years now. On one
side they have set up a 'paan' shop and on the other is
a roadside eatery, complete with tables and benches
made using the BMC's own paver blocks. The eatery
uses gas cylinders which is another cause of concern
given the recent conflagration at Breadkraft. The gas
cylinders are hidden in the storm water drains. These
squatters also live there, washing and drying clothes
right at the entrance of Vineet Towers. There is also an
open drainage area which they have occupied which
poses a health hazard. They even have an electricity
connection and have been able to obtain that without
any valid license.
Moreover, the presence of this paan shop and
eatery attracts several anti-social elements to the
area. According to Dr Kanta Mukherjee, the Secretary
of the building, “People are having drinks here at night
and reliable sources have also told us that the paan
shop is also peddling drugs.” It has also become an
illegal auto-rickshaw stand. Given that the building is
located close to a junction of roads leading from the
metro station and Juhu, these squatters are also one
of the reason for traffic snarls and the fact that
residents have to wait for ages before they can drive
into their building premises.
According to Nisha Zutshi, “We have regularly been
complaining about these people to the BMC. The BMC
does come and clear them out but within one day they
are back at the same spot. Their presence is a security
threat, there are young girls and women residing in
our building and sometimes they do return home at
night.” “At any point of time there are men gathered
outside our gate, it is very uncomfortable for the
women and girls who are living in the building,” agrees
Dr Mukherjee. It's not that the residents have not
tried doing anything themselves, “We tried putting
plants in pots outside but these people break them as
well. We thought of parking our cars outside but fear
that they will damage our cars. All this, when actually
as per our building plans, that area belongs to us,”
avers Zutshi. In fact, Dr Mukherjee states, “they have
dug up the paver blocks and damaged the road which

cars outside but fear that

we then had cemented at our own cost as we were the
ones being most affected.”
The residents have recently even had to face
threats from these nefarious characters who have
passed comments like, “we will not let you come out of
the building” or “have we eve-teased your daughter?”
They even physically pushed a resident, Mr Kalia.
Seeing no other recourse the members of the society,
along with their Chairman, Dr. Patel and secretary, Dr.
Kanta Mukherjee, have filed an FIR against these
people.
As Zutshi correctly remarks, “The BMC is always
propagating a 'Clean Mumbai'. They approach housing
societies with posters talking about the spread of
dengue and the importance of reducing garbage and
garbage segregation. Yet when we approach them
about the open drainage and the filth being created
outside our building they turn a deaf ear!”
Agreeing with her Dr Kanta Mukherjee says, “The
auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers who come here to eat
and have tea are regularly rinsing their mouths and
spitting on the pavement. The paper cups and other
rubbish is thrown into the storm drain which then
accumulates in the mangrove back water area where
the storm drain flows into. They are cooking rice etc on
the pavement and all this is strewn all over which is
causing rats to breed; infection due to leptospirosis is a
major concern for us. The open drain and the water
which accumulates around on the pavement is
breeding mosquitoes, one of our sweepers also
recently contracted malaria.”
Despite all these valid complaints and the
government's own cleanliness drive to bring about
'Swacch Bharat' one wonders why the BMC and police
are not taking any concrete permanent action. Dr
Mukerjee opines, “It is because these squatters have
the backing of Shiv Sena. In fact, one of our building
helpers who has been working with us for 25 years has
stopped reporting to work because he was threatened
by the Shiv Sena pramukh of our area. Some time ago,
the Shiv Sena people who are supporting these
squatters would deliberately park their cars in such a
way as to block our gate. I had to come personally and
make them remove the cars.”
Political loyalties should definitely not come into
play when it is a matter of upholding the law of the
land and protecting hapless citizens from harassment.
It is time the government authorities take stringent
action against such squatters who are occupying
prime land in Mumbai city without paying a rupee,
while law abiding citizens are being victimized.

HC RAPS MMRDA ON
ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTIONS
ON AIRPORT LAND
Janhavi Samant
One often hears of flights being delayed or just
escaping a crash due to the nuisance of birds around
the airport. Usually the birds are attracted to the
rubbish heaps created by the presence of illegal
hutments neat the airport. Besides, these slums also
pose a security threat. Thus, to ensure safety of flights,
the Bombay High Court has directed the Mumbai
Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)
to take action against illegal construction on airport land
and around the airport area.
Majority of these illegal constructions comprising
slums are in areas like Vakola, Saki Naka, Santacruz
there is a high density of slums, posing a security
threat. The direction was given last week by a division
bench of justices Abhay Oka and KR Shriram. The
MMRDA has been asked to take action as per the legal
provisions against illegal constructions which have
come up on and around the airport land.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Mumbai
International Airport Limited (MIAL) saying that the
appropriate authorities have failed to take necessary
action against the illegal constructions despite its
repeated request. MIAL had raised the safety issue
claiming that these illegal constructions have started
rising vertically around the airport. MIAL argued that
the landing and taking off of planes is risky as several
slums have come up around the airport.
However, the MMRDA and other authorities responsible
for clearing the illegal constructions contended that the
Airport Authority of India under Section 28 of the
Airports Authority of India Act, 1994, has sufficient
power to remove unauthorized occupants and illegal
constructions on airport land.
The court had earlier noted that "prima facie it
appeared that statutory authorities like the MMRDA and
BMC cannot refuse to exercise their power to take a
decision on demolition on the grounds that owners of
the lands should decide on the removal of
encroachments". The court had observed that all illegal
constructions put a burden on the existing
infrastructure. Moreover, the judges said that in this
particular case, illegal constructions affect the security
of the airport.
“The MMRDA has an obligation to exercise its
powers under the Mumbai Regional Town Planning Act
(MRTP) and to take action against illegal constructions,"
observed the court.
The judges have, however, asked the authorities to
be cautious and take into consideration that a
notification was issued by the Maharashtra government
to regularize slums up to the year 2000 before taking
legal action. The lands on which illegal constructions
have come up are owned by the Central Government by
the Airports Authority of India. These lands have been
leased to MIAL on a 30 + 30 years' term by the AAI. The
AAI holds 26% equity in MIAL.
An MMRDA official refused to comment saying, "We
have to go through the detailed order copy before
deciding on future course of action."
JIYO URGES HC TO RECONSIDER
'SANTHARA' BAN
ANDHERI: On August 24, Arihant Rishiji, founder of
Jayam Ideal Youth Organisation (JIYO) along with its
members urged the Rajasthan High Court to reconsider
its decision to ban the ancient Jain starvation ritual of
'Santhara.' The basic motive of the rally is to show the
protest against the recent Rajasthan High Court's ruling
against the age old practice of Jain monks called
'Santhara and Sallekhana.'
The ritual, also called Sallekhana, is the voluntary
starvation to embrace death. The Shwetabhar sect of
the community, which practices the age-old ritual,
considers it the ultimate way to attain moksh (salvation)
when one's life has served its purpose.
“Santhara was or will never be a suicide attempt by
Jain-muni as it is meant to get moksh from existing life
and punarjanam (rebirth) and it is a 2500 year old ritual
since Bhagwan Mahaveer,” says Arihant Rishiji. “We do
respect the Rajasthan High Court's verdict banning
Santhara, but the decisionwas taken in absence of
proper defence, evidences and justification by the Jain
Samaj, hence it should be reconsidered,” he added.
On August 10, the High Court had declared that the
Jain starvation ritual is illegal, making it punishable
under IPC Sections 309 (attempt to commit suicide) and
306 (abatement of suicide).
The ritual was banned following a public interest
litigation filed by human rights activist Nikhil Soni about
a decade ago, claiming that the ritual is a social evil that
should be considered a suicide.

Complex has many beautiful gardens,
and hundreds of residents enjoy the
beauty of these lush and green gardens
with neat lawns and small bandstands for
gatherings. In these gardens there are
many social and spiritual mandals,
resembling paradise on Earth.
Right in the midst of all this beauty, is
the majestic Pushpanjali hall, which is
the ground for 8 batches of Yoga classes.
In this celestial hall, last year a new and
eclectic Organization was born under the
guidance of Yoga supremo Smita Kamat.
This Organization was called ASMITA
and it was started as a small enterprise by
a collection of about 20 odd women in all
age groups, to encourage other women to
participate in social and educative
process to enlighten each other. The
mantra of this group is – One teach ten
others…
There is so much women can teach
others. Music, dance, art and craft
dramatics, sewing, cooking, reading and
writing, debating and a lot more. The
purpose of this group is to teach others in
total selflessness. Those who take a class,
do not charge any remuneration from
other women, as all are like sisters in this
Project.
Women are the backbone of our
society and they spend most of their lives
nurturing their families. This group is
started to inculcate new learnings and
enthusiasm in women, so they feel the
thrill of the new and wonderful
innovations of modern day living.
Women in their 50s and 60s are as
welcome in the group, as are the young
housewives who are always happy to get
advice and suggestions from others.
There are so many women who
wanted to pursue studies or careers but
had to give up everything to take care of
kids and family. The younger generation
today is enjoying a freer and
understanding family support to pursue
their careers without hindrance. The
generation of the 1960s and 1970s lived
in a different atmosphere…marriage and
settling down was the priority of that
time. Today so many new avenues have
opened to women. This group gives a
new ray of hope to all. The group meets
once a month in the house of any one
member selected, and after a few minutes
of general discussion, any aspect of study
commences for an hour. It could be
spiritual chanting, it could be a proper
class in drawing or even a group debate
on relevant topics of today'ssociety.

MEGH MALHAR 2015
MUMBAI: Greenlawns High School hosted their annual
singing competition “Megh Malhar 2015” at Sophia Bhabha
Hall. The annual singing show "Megh Malhar 2015" marked
the presence of some talented bunch of young singers. The
attendees and judges witnessed the aura of its unmatched
credibility through the best in class mentors showcasing the
finest singers, which left the whole auditorium speechless.
“Megh Malhar 2015” is one such platform which
nurtures the hidden talents of budding singers. An ultimate
singing platform for kids, with a rich legacy of over many
years.
The Annual Singing Show was judged by Aneel Murarka,
Leslie Lewis, Kavita Seth, Ravindra Jain, Roop Kumar
Rathod and Sonali Rathod and Vipul Roy.
Commenting on the intrinsic melody of “Megh Malhar
2015,” Industrialist and Philanthropist Aneel Murarka
attributes the magnificence and splendour of classical
music to the contribution of musicologists from the Vedic
era and later the conception, invention and classification of
the ragas in patent forms. Each raga exudes its own aura,
perfectly in tune with the mood or sentiment inspired by
the seasonal cycles.
"Megh Malhar retains the opulence and fervor of the
rainy season, evoking romance in all its moods: - joy,
longing and even pangs of separation. Music maestros
have woven many compositions to depict the Raas Leela of
Lord Krishna with His divine consort Radha during the rainy
season," says Aneel Murarka.
“The students who exhibited their vocal prowess surely
have attained knowledge about Megh Malhars. I am glad
that the faculty of the school thought of me to be worthy to
judge the singing competition amongst the likes of the
singing maestros” adds Aneel Murarka.
Prominent seasonal ragas which evoke human emotions
and sentiments in eloquent and irresistible ways include
“Megh Malhar,” which has many derivatives and its intrinsic
melody and beauty can best be relished when sung in the
months of July and August.

YOUR VIEW
Is Mulaym Singh Yadav's shocker
statement on rape justified?
ROHIT VORA, 55: First of all rape is a
heinous crime and a politician making
such statements should be strongly
condemned. If as a politician he doesn't
understand how serious this issue is he
should not be a politician and not be
allowed to contest any election what so
ever.
AZHAR RAMRAJKAR, 26: Rape is not a
mistake as Mulayam Singh Yadav thinks,
making such comments as a responsible
politician is a big mistake. However I also
feel the law should be made more strict for
rape cases, and the cases should be fast
tracked.
WHAT THE CARDS FORETELL FOR
AKSHAY KUMAR
Akshay Kumar, The Khiladi of Bollywood is a pragmatic man. He knows fame
can be a fair weather friend. His success has been hard won and he stays clear
of complacence. This is why, over 100 films spanning a long career, the actor
still worries about his place in the industry. He is slowly filling up with the year's
top performers - those who have won their audience's hearts and proved
valuable at the box office.
Akshay Kumar, the most versatile actor is perhaps one of the most
understated film actors in Bollywood. While his movies may not necessarily
shake up the box office, he takes home a handy sum every year and believes
doing more movies is better. He's lost many races, and felt the pain of failure.
But then he picks up the pieces and starts again, one movie at a time. He is
nonchalant and has a positive view on life. He is incredibly optimistic, high on life and makes the best out of every situation. Khatron Ke
Khiladi, Kumar is goal oriented, dedicated and a go-getter. He has the will to succeed and persists in what he believes which has kept him
in the lead. He has no doubt tried and tested all options but he still needs to improve his marketing skills a notch higher. The actor has a
softer, sensitive side to the big action hero. Family remains the centre of his universe as he realizes the importance of his kin. It is the
backbone of his career; the bedrock of his existence. Kumar is by far the fittest man in the film industry. He leads an extremely disciplined
life and is a fitness freak. Akshay is a spiritual person and is blessed by God almighty. His luck has been in his favour and is a self-made
man who strives hard to rise above his expectations and potential.
Cards foretell that for a while; to be precise at least six months from now, things won't work out at the expected pace but within these
months, after about four months things will get a little better. Life will bestow him with everything he desires but he is destined with slow
growth. Cards advise him to take necessary precautions to avoid unnecessary quarrels and arguments in 2015. Year 2016 would be good
in respect with career and family bonding. Regarding health, in the years 2015 and 2016 he will face minor health problems but nothing
to fret about as he will overcome it. Upcoming movies would do well at the theatres and would as always be entertaining. Cards show that
the year 2016 would be beneficial for him regarding investments related to business and movie productions and buying and /or selling of
property. Cards also suggest keeping his cool and calm approach and to be patient in testing times. God bless him and I wish him the best
for his future endeavours and a blissful life.
Guidance for our Readers by Expert PRIYANKA SAWANT
MAHESH SHARMA, 38: This man lacks
common sense and people like him
become politicians. Everyone should
condemn such statements made by
anyone. Politicians are meant to work for
the betterment of society but when he
talks like this he is not helping the society
to get any better.
VIKRAM, 26: Definitely the statement
made by him is an ignorant one or possibly
he is not aware of the current situation in
the country. There are mothers who are
worried every night if their daughters don't
return home before 8pm. There are 5 year
old infants being raped, it is very sad when
a politician makes a statement like this.
RAGVENDRA, 52: He sounds like an
uneducated man. He doesn't know what
he is saying. I am against the statement
that he has made, people should not elect
him to power ever again in his life. He is in
a way encouraging rape, considering the
statements he has made in the past are
wrong.
DAISHAN GANDHI, 24: I hope he
understands that people look up to
politicians, and he must not make such
comments. He is trying to impose his
thoughts on others. Rape is a serious
crime and should be dealt with strictly.
My name is Mansukhlal Mathurdas Tanna and my birth date is April 14 1935. Time is 7.45pm respectively. Firstly I have two
married sons and a married daughter. My problem is that there are real brotherly relations between the two. One who was better in
the past turned negative and one who was bad in the past turned better miraculously. Moreover, my married daughter's husband is
not co-operative not only towards my dull minded daughter but also my very intelligent granddaughter just for nothing. When will

Thank you for writing to us Mansuklal.

and your utmost will power. Cards strictly advice you to take necessary precautions and DO NOT IGNORE it as it will only aggravate your
health problems.

RASHISH PATKAR, 24: He might not be
aware, but the incident that took place in
Delhi last year was a gang rape and we
have enough evidences to prove that, so
he cannot say that gang rape is practically
impossible. Politicians these days are just
concerned with publicity - be it good or

make such statements and then get away

There is no denying the fact that Priyanka Chopra is a multifaceted actor par excellence. Her artistry and talent have

born actor. As a singer too, she has made her mark with her
golden voice.
QUANTICO, the BC drama series is acknowledged as the
1st of its kind of US show to be aired on the 21st Century
Fox's Star India very soon. Priyanka Chopra is essaying a very
crucial role in it and her 1st trailer has been widely

US. She has legions of fan following in US and they have high
praises for Priyanka.
Priyanka through her chat with the writer makes it known
that QUANTICO being her first international assignment, she
feels extremely proud and excited as well for being a part of
it. She also makes it known that she is recognized for her
artistry and talent and not for the color of her skin. With her
successful Hollywood assignment she has made the

Alls not well with Arjun Rampal and Mehr Jessia

Wild conjectures have emerged

'Sussanne Khan has something to do with it. Scuttlebutt is widespread with rumours asserting an
issue between Arjun and Sussanne, allegedly rooting anguish to Mehr.
It is as well speculated that Arjun has been residing independently from his wife for some time
now. When their personal lives are being cut up in public territory, fresh section of news comes all
along that the two have actually filed for a split-up.
Rajesh Khanna would have been a proud father

Had Bollywood's only super star late Rajesh Khanna been
alive today, he would have been the most happiest and proud
man that his daughter Twinkle Khanna has emerged as an
accepted columnist and has now launched her first ever book
"Mrs. Funnybones." I am sure he would have released the
book through his own hand and blessed her for all her
achievements and efforts in her professional career.
Many in the film fraternity were bewildered how could Twinkle
emerge as a very popular cult on the pop culture writing so
soon. In fact she had made a huge impact with her columns
in the most widely and highly circulated newspaper DNA. Her
present book is worth more than reading it.
According to Twinkle, "Mrs. Funnybones" finds funniness, from
a woman's viewpoint, in the state of women in India. Akshay
Kumar should be a proud man for his wife's achievements.

She is fun and vivacious. She is an interviewer's delight since she answers with utmost honesty. TV actress
Deepika Singh has been ruling the hearts of many viewers with her performance in small screen's numero
uno show 'Diya Aur Bati Hum.' Last year, the gorgeous actress tied the knot with the director of the show,
Rohit Raj Goyal. In a candid chat with Shaili Madan, she talks about her life and television...
HOW DID ACTING HAPPEN TO YOU?
I always wanted to do something in life. I hail from
Delhi and I have friends who were in the modelling
industry and I accompanied them to auditions. I bagged
two advertisements consequently. Those days I used to do
advertising assignments by not disclosing them to my
family. They were very conservative and were against me
from doing anything such assignments. Later, I enrolled
myself for MBA through correspondence and also joined
theatre. This is where I actually realised I had the talent to
act. My mother had also come to watch the play. This is
where she actually saw me act and realised that this is
where my passion lies and that I was never going to look
back. I always wanted to be independent and despite
trying my hands at various things, only acting seemed
right to me. Acting has always been my passion. After
theatre, I gave my final auditions for 'Diya Aur Bati' in
Mumbai. I was very certain I would not be selected, but
this proved wrong. Once I started the show, there was no
looking back and Mumbai became my permanent place to
stay.
DO YOU RELATE TO THE CHARACTER YOU
ARE PLAYING ON SCREEN?
Yes absolutely. I very much relate to the character
Sandhya that I play. I am also extremely hard working and
focussed as an individual, like she is. Also, I guess when
you are working as a character for 14 – 16 hours per day, it
starts to become a part of you.
ANY ROLE THAT YOU WANT TO DO?
There is no particular role that I want to play. Even
Sandhya, like I mentioned was not a planned move. It just
happened to me by luck. Rohit recognised my talent and
saw the character in me and thought I was absolutely apt
for it. I am an extremely versatile person and would adapt
to any role that comes my way in the future. Also, 'Diya
Aur Bati' takes away a lot of time, which leaves me little
time to think of any other role that I would want to do.
HOW ABOUT DOING FILMS...HAVE YOU BEEN
CONSCIOUSLY TRYING TO STAY AWAY FROM
THEM?
Yes, initially it was a conscious move to stay out of
films. I come from a joint family where my mother and
grandmother had convinced me that television is the way
to go, if at all. Kusum and Tulsi were role models for my
grandmother who also wanted me to do something similar.
They always wanted me to play some such character on
television.
YOU GOT MARRIED LAST YEAR...HOW HAS IT
CHANGED THINGS FOR YOU?
Yes...marriage has changed so much for me. Life is a
lot more relaxed. Rohit and I are from the same industry so
he understands my work and my routine. I never have to
give him an elaborate explanation for what I am doing and
why. He is extremely supportive of all my actions and
understands me completely. It is a relaxing feeling to come
back home to him after 14 – 16 hours of hectic shooting
hours.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF FIVE YEARS
FROM NOW?
I don't plan a lot. I definitely see myself working if not
anything else.
HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR FREE TIME?
I like to watch a lot of movies. If not, I also dubsmash
videos.
ARE YOU A TRAVELLER? WHICH PLACE IS
MOST CLOSE TO YOUR HEART AND WHY?
Yes, I am a traveller at heart. The place closest to my
heart would be Switzerland and Paris. This is because
Rohit and I went to Europe for our honeymoon. This is
certainly the closest place to me.
YOUR INSPIRATION...
My grandmother. She inspires me till date. She can
afford to keep household help, but she does not. She is
extremely hard working and prefers to do all the work by
herself. I am in awe of this quality of hers and it really
inspires me.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT MUMBAI?
I love Mumbai since it gave me everything. The city
has given me fame, money and a beautiful house to live in.
It has helped me live the life I always wanted to live - that
of an independent woman.
YOUR PHILOSOPHY IN LIFE...
Live in the present...Don't cry over the past...or worry
about the future. Just live life to the fullest in the present.

TRUSTING YOURSELF
LOVE AND FEAR ARE TWO SISTERS WHICH CAN'T LIVE TOGETHER
Anjali Nagpal is a life coach and workshop facilitator certified to present Heal Your Life
transformational workshop worldwide approved by Hay House, US. She also conducts
workshops relating to Law of Attraction and self healing. She is also a therapist for different
modules (hypno, metaphor). She is an Angel card reader.
What is darkness? Opposite of light. No, for me darkness is
just the absence of light. If we enter a room which is dark and just
with a matchstick, we can brighten up the room. The same goes
for the room which is filled with light. No matter how much hard
we try or whatever we do, we won't be able to get the darkness
there. The same applies to fear and trust. Fear is just lack of trust.
Fear is lack of trust in ourselves that we are enough or lack of
trust in others.
When we fill ourselves with trust, there is no place for fear.
Fill yourself so much with trust that there is no room for fear.
Even in our doctrine, its mentioned that one must have “Faith and
patience.” Faith is trusting a vision without having the evidence
in front of you. Trust is what we learn when we want to overcome
fear. It's like trusting the power within us that connects to the
Universal Power. Fear is limiting our minds. Anger is also
another form of fear.
Susan Jeffers has wonderfully stated in her book “Feel the
fear and Do it anyway” that “If everybody feels fear when
approaching something totally new in life - yet so many are out
there doing it despite the fear- then we must conclude that fear is
not the problem.” She goes on to say that the real issue is not fear,
but how we hold it.” People who understand that fear is just the
limiting thought in their mind and know that they are enough to
handle things, can do everything they want.
How many times have we got a certain thought we fear and
because we gave that much power to the thought by running
away from the thought that it became reality and later we have
handled it. Its just the thought that we won't be able to handle. If
we keep those thoughts just as some thought which has come and
is going without giving it any meaning, then it just remains as a
thought.
Love and fear are two sisters which can't live together. The
wonderful thing is that the more we are willing to stay with love
and trust who you are, the more we attract those qualities. When
we are on an unbroken series of events of really being frightened
or upset or worried or not liking yourself then amazingly
everything goes wrong. Its the same when we really love
ourselves then everything starts to go on a winning series of
events. Loving and trusting creates the space for you to feel safe
and enjoy the life. Its appreciating the creator for the miracle he
has made by making us. We all do love appreciation and so does
the creator. The best thing is that no one knows us better than us.
We know what we are doing but others don't. We know what we
are doing and why are we doing. We can understand our feeling,
others don't. So leave the fear behind and love and trust yourself.
We are always enough. We need to love ourselves so that we can
take good care of ourselves. We have to do everything to make
our mind, body and heart strong and stable. We need to learn to
turn to the power within than looking outside.
Find a good spiritual connection and work on it to make
yourself feel enough. Every soul is enough. You are enough and
trust worthy. The time we will be able to trust ourselves, we will
be able to trust others too. Make this world a trustful place to live
in.

created in the USA, New Zealand, Australia, Malta,
Luxemburg, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Hong Kong,
Macau, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina are priceless.
Today travelling means having that special experience
which would broaden my horizon in the manner nothing
else would. It means exploring the
oneness that holds the people of
this world together while
assimilating the diversities. It means
reflecting and redefining concepts
and beliefs for a better world-view to
cultivate a new mind-set. That
happens when you are not only
exploring places, cuisines and
history but also culture and outlook
by interacting with locals and other
fellow travellers from different parts
of the world. That happens when
you are the controller of your
itinerary, time and who-you-wantto-be-with.
It will be my endeavour to share
my varied travel experiences
through this column.

The word 'travel' has changed its implication quite often in
my life. At the age of 10, when I took my first flight from my
birth place Addis-Ababa to Mumbai for education, travel
meant making a journey to arrive at a new place. A few
years later when my father took us for a month long holiday
from Agra to Kashmir via Shimla, travel meant bonding and
doing fun things together.
After marriage however it meant going to hill stations to
relax. Game parks too surfaced on our travel list then as
with the lions and tigers for company, three did not become
a crowd. Thus I travelled to Nainital, Panchmani, Kabini,
Darjeeling, Ooty,
Kodaikanal, Kerela, Gir
Forests,
Bandhavgarh, Jim Corbet and Kanha National Parks.
The definition of travel then got a new dimension when I
took an adventure trip in Himachal Pradesh. Indulging in
river-rafting, rappling, Para-sailing and river crossing while
sleeping in tents made me an adrenaline junkie. I then
romanced with deserts in Rajasthan, cycled down from the
world's highest motorable road in Leh, flirted with glaciers in
New Zealand and did fox flying in tropical forests of
Malasiya.
When the bones got sore, travel started getting
associated with Spa Resorts. Moksha, Ananda and Shillim
Spa Resorts soothed my travel weariness. As my pockets
got deeper, travel meant visiting different countries where

A selfie from the soul
I have always worn my heart on my sleeve.
(Unfortunately, it sometimes slips and shows; most times
I go sleeveless!) And worn a song on my lips.
As always, the Beatles are amongst the best when it
comes to converting philosophy into pop. Inspired by pot?
Perhaps. 'Liquored by love'? Maybe. But I, the fifth Beatle,
live in Penny Lane.
From my schooldays to my 60-odd years, I have lived
in a time warp called The Swingin' Sixties. Yet, this is not a
Bharat Savur
story of a musical journeyman transforming into a
mystical savant. This is my serenade to love. The Long Road to Nowhere: From Is
to Bliss is the soul-sharing story of this singing Savur. Daresay, it's evolutionary.
Writing it transformed my life. (Correction: I didn't write it so much as the love in
my heart and the old sixties' soul dictated it to my pen.)
Is to Bliss. My book, in short, is about converting one's existence (is) into bliss.
By tapping and tracking our inner winner – intuition. The voice of our inner God
that resides in each of us. The Long Road to Nowhere is solely based on my
experiences in life. The encounters of this 'questor' (seeker/agnostic) who has
forever questioned the whys and whats of life. And found solutions and answers
– articulated in this book. Though it's not only about love, love is the book's main
beam. Nay, it's foundation.
Let me come back to the Beatles. All You Need Is Love. This book has it in
plenty. Allow me to quote from it: An intangible formless force that creates and
governs the tangible (material) formed universe. A live power that manifests,
empowers all life that exists and gives it expression... Many call it
God/Rama/Allah/Jesus… I prefer a simpler name and definition : Love. This one
(as the Beatles belted it) is with love from me to you.
Bharat Savur is the author of the just-released book The Long Road to
Nowhere: From Is to Bliss; 108 pages; Price: Rs.200; Zen Publications. Available
as a paperback and e-book on Amazon / Kindle, Flipkart, Smashwords,
Crossword, Granth, etc.

DEEPAK BHATIA, COMPLEX EXECUTIVE
CHEF - THE WESTIN GURGAON, THE WESTIN
SOHNA RESORT AND SPA.
Deepak Bhatia is an Australian but an Indian born at heart. With
more than three decades of culinary expertise, he is an
extensively travelled chef who has worked in leading hotels of
India and abroad. As per him, punctuality and discipline are the
two basic things which must be in every man to be a successful
person. The Hotel industry is basically related to maintaining
and establishing friendly relations with the guest. It has shown
tremendous growth. It also possesses vast career opportunities.
The Hotel industry is where many traditions and cultures meet
under a single umbrella. I am very proud to serve to all those
cultures and implicate our culture too. Deepak Bhatia in
conversation with MEWATI SITARAM...
Educational assets
Chef Deepak Bhatia is a hardcore
Mumbaikar, brought up in South Mumbai.
He did his schooling from St. Sebastian
Goan high school, Charni road and catering
from IHMCTAN, Dadar Mumbai.
Beginning of career
After completing his degree from IHM
Mumbai, he, from Catering College DadarMumbai followed post graduation diploma
in Food production from the prestigious, The
Oberoi School of Hotel Management New
Delhi.
Is anyone else from your family in this
profession? Who inspired you to join
culinary trade?
It was my natural choice to opt for this. None
in my family hail from this profession. I
always loved to eat good food and had many
likes and dislikes unlike in the family but
would always be inquisitive to understand
how the food was being cooked so would
always hang around the kitchen to see it evolve to the final stage
especially the roadside vendors. One day I met a friend of my
cousin who was working as a chef in one of the hotels was who
dressed in a white Chefs coat. That day I felt I would want to
wear that jacket and take it up as my passion and profession.
What do you think it takes to succeed in this industry?
A successful professional is the one, who comes to work to make
a new statement every day. The same applies to a Chef-passion,
perfection, people management, perseverance, presentation
skills, personalized service and striking a balance to generate
profit is what makes a successful Chef.
Do you owe your success to any lucky breaks?
You don't really recognise a lucky break – it seems intuitive. I
guess there's an element of being in the right place at the right
time, but the key to succeeding as a chef is hard work and
sacrifice.
How do keep abreast of all that is happening in the industry?
We are living in advanced technological era and it is important
to each chef to remain updated in all forms. If you are lagging
behind then you will miss out on the new developments in the
culinary field. It is important to constantly browse the net and
different social media platforms, networking with chefs,
Vendors and entrepreneurs. I was also the Vice President of the
Indian federation of Chefs association IFCA and Western India
Chefs association WICA, until 2009; I think such forums are
excellent platforms to remain engaged and exchange of ideas.
Where do you find yourself after five years?
I am a born chef and would love to remain a chef throughout my
career. A good Executive Chef of a
good five star deluxe hotel chain with
added responsibilities for the company
and take the food and beverage to the
next level.
Why as per you is this industry
awesome?
This industry is really awesome as
there is a freedom to cook, taste good
food and travel the world. You get to
meet so many different people from
Mewati Sitaram
various backgrounds, nationalities,
professionals, celebrities, Actors and Diplomats. Whether
you're working in front areas of the hotel or in the kitchen,
working behind the scenes, or even if you're involved in the
management of a hospitality business, every time you come into
work you're making someone's day that little bit better. Your
business is all about people. It's about making people happy. As
well as being a people-oriented industry, hospitality is creative.
You are creating a product, be it food, drink, or an experience
and there's always scope to dream up new ways of making it
more enjoyable for your customers.
Can you elaborate on your International exposure?
I am in the industry for almost three decades. I am fortunate to
have travelled at least 15 countries. I was in Australia for six
years where I have worked for Australia's national career Qantas
airlines. Besides, I have worked for hotels, restaurants, pubs,
bistros, banquets in Australia. I have worked for Hyatt Hotels
Baku-Azerbaijan as Executive Chef, Hyatt Regency Baku.
Cross exposure and Familiarization at Grand
Hyatt Singapore, Grand Hyatt Erawan
Bangkok-Thailand. I have contributed in the
support services for the functions held in
conjunction with the Royal Wedding at Hyatt
Brunei. I did cross training and Indian Food

the F & B exhibition at Hamburg, FAM at
Park Hyatt Hamburg, Germany. Visited food
and beverage exhibition at Singapore.
Visited the F & B exhibition Fierro Milano
held at Milan, FAM at Park Hyatt Milan,
Italy. I have attended the F & B conferenceASPAC held at Grand, Regency and Park
Hyatt Seoul Korea and FAM visit at Grand
Hyatt Shanghai, China.
Noteworthy achievements...
I have successfully completed the
Managerial Grid Seminar organized in
collaboration with Scientific Methods, Inc.

c o m p l e t e d t h e E ff e c t i v e K i t c h e n
Management seminar organized by the Ecole Hoteliere De
Lausanne Switzerland in collaboration with FHRAI at New
Delhi.
Who inspired you in the profession and what did you learn
from them?
There have been many chefs that I have worked with in the
industry in India, Australia, Europe and Asia who have inspired
me by their cooking skills and I have learnt a lot from most of
them. I have learnt the discipline to be on time, be passionate,
not give up but try to do my best every day, train and grow
people and show consistency.
Could you recall or flash your unforgettable moments?
I have cooked and presented culinary experiences for eminent
guests such as –former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, US
President Bill Clinton, foreign MPs and Presidents, King of
Nepal, Sultan of Brunei, Richard Gere and Bollywood stars
among others. One of my favourite moments have been cooking
for Amitabh Bachchan and his family with three different
cuisines very personalized and exclusive menus at their Delhi
house for a close gathering. I was given personal thank you
gestures by each and every family member which made my day.
Your ultimate goal...
My ultimate goal is to make a career with STARWOOD
HOTELS in India.
A message for aspiring chefs...
If you have the passion for cooking, be flexible with your taste
buds and try to be innovative. Simple dishes are the most
difficult to do, keep food simple authentic yet elegant.

LIFE HAS ITS OWN WAY
As a famous quote says, “Nobody can go back
and start a new beginning, but anyone can start
today and make a new ending...” Nothing could be
closer to the truth. But before you can begin any
process of transformation you have to stop doing the
things that have been holding you back.
We spend a lifetime trying to understand
everything and everybody else except ourselves. For
most of us, it takes all our life to realize and
understand that it is not necessary to understand
everything. Life has its own way of teaching us
lessons and etching them in our minds. Some of
them are easier than the others. Happiness today is
apparently more dependent on how we think about
what happens versus what is actually happening. To
be able to embrace this in the moment, is what
makes life.
I love this short story from Swami Vivekananda:
One morning in Sarnath, after visiting the temple of
Mother Durga, the Swami was passing through a
place, where there was a large tank of water on one
side and a high wall on the other. Here, he was
surrounded by a troop of large monkeys. They were
not willing to allow him to pass and there was no
other way. As he tried to walk past them, they
howled and shrieked and clutched at his feet. As they
pressed closer, he began to run; but the faster he
ran, the bolder the monkeys got and they attempted
to bite at him. When it seemed impossible for him to
escape, he heard an old sannyasi calling out to
him:"Face the brutes." The words brought him to his
senses. He stopped running and turned majestically
to boldly face the irate monkeys. As soon as he did
that, they fell back and fled! With reverence and
gratitude, he gave the traditional greeting to the
sannyasi, who smilingly responded with the same,
and walked away. Be Bold.. Be Strong.. Be Heroes..
Here are a few lessons we must try to incorporate
in life while going through the journey:
Be grateful: The society you live in has a huge
contribution in what you are. The teacher at
playschool, the janitor at the mall, the labor who
made the road, all of them are part of your society.
Just because, you have paid them, it doesn't
necessarily make you even. So, be thankful to the
society.
Learning to love: Love is the greatest invention of
life, learn to love your parents, your soul-mate,
friends, colleagues. Find out
what you love most in life,
then spend your life doing just
that. Nothing can make your
life as fulfilling as doing the
work you love would.
Giving back: From your mother to the janitor at
the mall/hospital have taken great pains to make
your life better. Contribute to your society in
whatever way you can.
Travelling: This world is a beautiful place. Travel,
learn more about people and cultures. Let your
camera rest at your hotel room. Walk, sit, sleep
under the sun and stars, without letting anything
distract you. This is also a form of meditation.
Taking Risks: Failure is the greatest motivator in
life. Do not be afraid to fail. That should make taking
risks easier; because sometimes your heart is sure of
something that your mind isn't. Let your heart win
the battle against your mind a few times in your life;
it is worth it.
Wake up and get a life before it is too late!
Little Things Matter Most
Every thought, every action,
every little step makes a world
of a difference….
A genuine smile warms a
heart. It reflects through the
eyes. It is the heart that is
reflected through this smile.
An arm around the shoulder,
spells out re-assurance of
Bindu Midha
someone being there for those
moments that require a certain someone to lean on.
A gentle pat on the back re-affirms that the task has
been well done; the path taken is the apt one. A kind
word is like soothing balm. A word of gratitude or of
apology all tiny matters of the heart give a feeling
that someone has taken your hand in theirs.
Such little gestures travel a long way to connect
through a certain bridge which requires language of a
different kind! Why? The gestures speak volumes by
themselves and are self-explanatory. They motivate
and offer reassurance, two qualities. On a rotten day
when things seem to be going totally awry, one
mistake follows another. A smile brings back the
spark, a hope that all is not lost. There still exists a
possibility of the situation reforming itself. A kind
word at this juncture leads to an elevation of the
flagging spirit. It suggests that resurgence is
possible.
Uncertainty dogs one when an unfinished task
hangs at the edge of a cliff. But a pat on the back is a
confirmation that the path taken is appropriate and
the road taken can only head in one direction- ahead.
It also makes the doer realise that someone is
watching, is interested and help is at hand should the
need arise. And will such a need arise after such
confidence boost? Not really as spirits soar and the
creative intent is unleashed to arrive at best
outcomes. Tasks will undoubtedly be done, they have
got to be, but the spirit will sag. A friendly gesture and
a kind word take one miles in the line of success,
remonstrations kindle negativity.
Little things matter the most. Appreciation
during a staff meeting, an email of encouragement,
remembering an important occasion and offering
wishes or surprising a colleague with a small gesture
of support inject an element of freshness and add
the humane quotient. They are like a beautiful
sunset or a flawless sunrise.
It is elements of the unusual that add a twist to
our day to day affairs adding a zing to it, they add a
spring to our step, bring a whistle to our lips a
laughter in our eyes and the zeal to get up and keep
going, against all odds. It is these little things that
matter most A smile, a kind word, a loving gesture
and a ray of hope are like a string of pearls which
when stringed together make life's journey glow with
a radiance of good-heartedness and hope to
overcome all odds no matter what the situation or
condition, no matter how inclement the weather or
unfriendly the season. It is our mannerisms or rather
good manners that propel our co-workers into the
direction we want them to take.
All these are a brisk 5-minute massage of a tired body
and a limp mind. Humility rather than high
handedness may help win the day for us as humility is
magnetic and highhandedness loathsome. This
victory over hearts may seem small and insignificant
like fixing a leaking tap ourselves, but it would be
difficult to deny that the joy it brings and the comfort
it causes is manifold.
Be (9) little BIG things:
1. Greet people with a smile
2. Express gratitude.
3. Offer apologies where due.
4. Be courteous and polite
5. Be humble
6. Hold the door for a person.
7. Avoiding dashing into the elevator, having arrived
last.
8. Jump queues- never.
9. Spend time earn hearts.
Breath affects Peak Performance,Well-being
Life is the period between one breath and the
next; a person who half breathes, only half lives.
He, who correctly breathes, acquires control of the
whole being. HATHA YOGA PRADIPIKA Ancient Yogic Literature.
Each human being has a fixed number of
breaths allotted. If one breathes slowly then one
lives longer; if one breathes rapidly the given
number of breaths get used up quicker resulting in a
shorter and more stressed life. And that's not the
only problem. Whatever aspect of life you need to
succeed in…
·
Health
·
Wealth
·
Relationships
·
Career
·
Personal Effectiveness
Everyone is faced with the challenging
question, “Can I have a better life, while pursuing
my goals?” Yes, you can. All you need to do, is
learn and practice how to breathe your way to
success…You probably know that your thoughts
and your feelings, decide who you are and what
you become. But do you know what connects your
thoughts & feelings? It's your breath that connects
thoughts, emotions, desires and actions. Do you
know how many times you breathe everyday?
21,600 times. Which body part moves when you
Inhale? Is it your tummy, chest or nothing moves?
When I asked the question “When you,
Inhale, your tummy comes up or goes down”?,
more than 50% of participants answered me that
the tummy goes down below and many said, there
is no movement at all. Very few answered that the
tummy bulges up as they breathe in.
By learning to manage your breath, you can
learn to manage your thoughts, emotions and
actions. India had developed this scientific fact
thousands of years ago and passed it down from
generation to generation. Whether its meditation or
yoga, the fundamental learning is, how to breathe
right – number of breaths per minute, pattern,
depth, etc
Change in food habits, sleeping pattern,
physical activities, stress levels, etc, have all
contributed to increasing man's average breathing
count to between 14 to 20 breaths per minute and
made it more shallow.
Every emotion has a strong impact on your
breathing pattern. Some emotions make the
inhalation shallow, some make it slow, and some
make it rapid while others make it deep. Since
emotions affect our breath cycle, we end up
breathing in an inefficient way.
Inefficient breathing leaves us drained and
chronically fatigued, irritable, tired, emotionally
strained and intellectually dull. In such a state, one
cannot understand people or situations correctly;
one cannot take proper decisions; and cannot
communicate appreciations or critical suggestions
in a positive manner. Such people become
personally ineffective.
My Personal Research:
Look at the image below which is the breathheart-brain pattern of one of my research subject.
The subject is breathing 18 times/minute in a
shallow and improper rhythm. The heart is
conditioned to beat at 105 times per minute and
93% low coherence with the brain. This is the way
this person has conditioned his breath-heart-brainemotions & actions. Many of
us are unaware of this fact
and continue with our lives
expecting peak performance
and inner well-being.
Indian Yogic Science had
maintained that one's breath
needs to be slow and deep to
improve one's Peak
Performance and Inner wellbeing.
Now modern Murali Sundaram
technology and neuroscience
has discovered that the perfect balance of the
autonomic nervous system happens at a breath
count of 5 per min. Peak Performance & Inner
Well-being requires a perfect autonomic balance.
This is how 5 breaths/minute will look like with
a proper breath pattern, heart beating at 63 and a
100% coherence with the brain. This is my
personal score using Heartmath emWave
Biofeedback tool.
True, slow & deep abdominal breathing has a
profound effect onto your thoughts, desires, action,
behaviour and even your belief system.
If you want MORE in your life, then LESS &
deep should be your number of breaths per minute.
READER'S MESSAGES
Dear Editor
I really liked the article on how not
watching TV can make you peaceful
and also useful, though many may
not completely agree with what the
writer had to say but it is the truth,
isn't it? Many a times we are so
soaked into the fictional world of
television that we fail to understand
that the things in the real world
work differently. A saas bahu
relationship is far more different in
real life than in real life, besides not
watching TV may make you
peaceful and happy and maybe even
more useful where you might end
up reading a lot of books and gain
tons of knowledge, but one thing
you can be completely sure about is
you will save enough money.
Janvi Mehra
To the Editor,
I liked the article Dirty, Dignity
Defying Drain. It was a thought
provoking piece where the
comparison is made between the old
and the new India. The old India
was one of the greatest civilizations
on the Earth thousands of years ago
with proper drainage and sewage
and now how we have ruined
everything. There is no proper
drainage, no place for water to go,
proving to be a nice breathing place
for insects and mosquitoes on the
stagnant water in one of the greatest
civilization of all times which is
causing so many problems and
sickness. I guess it is time now to
start working on this issue and make
India a better place to live in and see
to it that the quality of life is not
hampered especially when the PM
of the country is also calling for
'swach bharat.'
Neha Vishwasi
To the Editor,
It is good to see Mumbai Messenger
highlighting an issue such as the
traffic problems because of metro,
ever since the construction of Metro
Rail started travelling by the road
below the Metro rail track is become
a big headache especially during the
peak hours. No doubt that the traffic
department needs to fix this problem
so that life of the commuters
becomes easy, now that Mumbai
Messenger has brought this issue to
the lime light, I hope that this
problem is fixed at the earliest.
Hoping the issue gets sorted.
Thanking you
Meher Mehta
Dear Editor
When I read about the parking woes
haunting the residents at
Lokhandwala back road I could
relate to it on so many levels, I go to
Lokhandwala often and face this
problem where I am stuck in the
middle of the road because firstly
the roads are so narrow and then
there these vehicles parked which
makes it even more narrower, it is
impossible for two vehicles going in
opposite direction to make it to the
other side. Good to know that there
has been a plan devised by the local
corporator to overcome this
problem, I hope that the municipal
authorities will approve the plan or
at least come up with a logically
solution as soon as possible.

getting a second opinion. She has
been treating me for years saying
that everything looked good. Dr
Preeti is 7mm pockets dangerous?
Would I lose my teeth if I don't get
treated? What would you
suggest? - Prateebha Shah
No, dangerous is not a word I
would use. However, it means that
the periodontal (gum) health in that
area is not up to the mark. This could
be because of the wisdom tooth
there that has partially erupted,
causing a peri-coronal flap. This
means that there is flap of gum tissue
that is being trapped between the
partially erupted wisdom tooth and
the upper molars. This has caused
food particles to get stuck there,
promoting the buildup of local
irritants there (plaque, calculus),
which have caused the gums to start
separating from the tooth surface.
This problem will go away once the
wisdom tooth is removed. Nothing as
drastic as losing your teeth will
happen. But if those local irritants are
not removed, the pocket will be likely
to get bigger and after a few years,
the teeth in the area may start
becoming loose. I suggest you
remove the wisdom tooth.
I have a painful nodule under my
jaw. It hurts to touch and seems to
be getting bigger. My ear is
starting to feel blocked. I am very
weak and tired. Slight headache.
Not a tooth issue nor is it an ear
issue. What could it be? Shalini Seth, 22
The nodule under your jaw that
you can feel is a submandibular
lymph node. Lymph nodes are the
defense factories of our body.
Whenever there is an infection in the
vicinity, they get the signal to
increase the productions of the
defense cells needed to combat the
infection. This causes the lymphoid
cells to increase in number, thereby
increasing the size of the lymph
nodes, and thus making them large
enough to be felt. Otherwise, normal
lymph nodes cannot be felt. Even a
slight cold or cough can be enough to
make the nodes in the Maxillofacial
area large enough to be felt. In your
case, from the symptoms that you
describe, you seem to have a viral
infection, that has caused the lymph
nodes to be swollen. As soon as your
general health will improve, you
won't be able to feel the node. You
need to see a physician for some
prescription antibiotics.
Shelly Khera is an acclaimed dietician, nutritionist,
slimming expert and a world renowned Yogacharya.
Her television program on Yoga has a dedicated
audience all over the world. Being the MD and
Founder of Slim Sutra, she has dedicated her life to
the perfection of the health philosophy and is
committed to share its benefits with society at large.
In a candid chat with KULRAJ BEDI she shares her
wealth of knowledge on Yoga...
How did your journey in Yoga begin and
who inspired you?
I have been doing Yoga since the age of 5. It was
first my teacher who inspired me to pursue this, then
my grandfather who was a spiritual guru who
inspired me to do things morally as well as mentally. I
did not realise its benefits initially because I was too
young. But with time I have realised the crucial role it
plays our lives. Everyone goes through ups and
downs in life. To be able to live through this, we need
a strong mental support. Yoga has somewhere given
me the strength to help me be able to the lead my life
as I want. Yoga has helped me cope with everyday
situations better. Yoga has given me a lot of
tolerance, it has given me the power to think and
take right decisions.
Is there a best time to do Yoga?
Yes, Yoga is most beneficial when it is done in the
morning. But nowadays there is a lot of stress and
people are usually in a rush during morning hours to
get to work. People doing jobs from morning to
evening are advised to do yoga between 8-9pm or at
any time for one hour during the day. However, one
should avoid doing Yoga for four hours after their
main meals – lunch and dinner.
How does Yoga help one to de-stress?
Yoga definitely gives an individual a lot of
relaxation. But nowadays yoga has been given a
more commercial look. Yog is the union of mind and
body. We don't see any such union in people
nowadays. Their body is somewhere, while their
mind is wandering elsewhere. I instruct everyone
coming here for Yoga to be in the present and have
their mind here with their body. If people keep
thinking about their surroundings and other things, it
is not meditation. At Slim Sutra we teach students
that even if you are doing padmasana, there is a
beautiful philosophy to it. We call Padmasana a lotus
pose – we should learn to imbibe the characteristics
of a lotus. Even though it lives in muck, it grows to be
beautiful. Training your mind with the posture gives a
lot of focus, concentration and relaxation. As per me,
yoga is four dimensional – it can give you growth
mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
People coming to the institute are allowed to go for
meditation only if they have done Yoga for a period of
atleast two months prior to it. When Patanjali wrote
Yoga Sutra, he dedicated only 3 out of 190 sutras for
asanas. Rest of the sutras are for the mind. He knew
that the 21st century man is going to suffer a lot of
stress. So he devised a way wherein an individual can
balance his mind with the body. The beauty of Yoga
cannot be explained in words. There is no such
science today. We are very fortunate and rich to have
such a science like this with us. I would only advice
people to not commercialise it and instead help
others reap its benefits. Also, other than being used
as a cure, if yoga is used as a preventive method,
people will be much more happier. Yoga can be
incorporated at an age as young as 8 years.
Can diseases be cured by any one asana?
No... this is a myth. It is always a set of
pranayamas or a set of asanas that will help one to
cure a specific disease. Individual parts of our system
are in union with each asana. Also, in order to be able
to do certain complex asana, one needs to be able to
have flexibility. This can be achieved through practice
with the help of other asanas by starting from
scratch.
Yoga now has various forms like Power
Yoga and Hot Yoga...
Such kinds of Yogas benefit few people. For those
practicing Hot Yoga, they must realise we live in an
equatorial region. Here there is no 0 degree
temperature. Your body already heats up while doing
yoga and one can only imagine its consequences if its
done at 45 degrees. Such Yoga may beneficial for a
few years but it is not advisable after the age of 30.
Also, such yoga is ideally not meant for the Indian
weather.
Does Yoga help in weight reduction?
That is one of its benefits. Yoga is like an
investment for life. People want to invest in policies
and everything else but they don't want to invest in
such a beautiful science like Yoga. It is very important
to have a good teacher who can guide you through
the process and different asanas. Being posed,
Shelly Khera
serene, having the right thinking, focussing,
concentration is all provided by yoga to the mind.
Physically it makes sure one's physical system is
working well. A fusion of Yoga, Ayurveda, Yoga,
certain modern machines and muscle stimulators is
what Slim Sutra is all about. Yoga will never make
one gain weight or make one very slim - it will
maintain the weight forever. Yoga teaches Atha
Yoganushasanam – one must discipline oneself to
discipline one's mind. The Bhagvad Gita also explains
that only the physical yoga is not Yoga – you have go
in depth to reap its benefits and a balanced mind and
soul. Yoga alone can ease an individual's journey
through life, but unfortunately in today's times
people go to psychiatrists to treat themselves and
take sedatives.
What is the right way to do Yoga?
When you do Yoga for an hour, start with a few
warm up exercises, 45 minutes do yogic postures. Do
few asanas (3 standing, 3 sitting, 3 lying down) but
do them with perfection. During the last 15 minutes
do shravasana. Always do Yoga on the floor, with a
mat.

Early Detection Cervical Cancer
ON AUGUST 23, AT PUSHPAA HOSPITAL, A SUCCESSFUL PAP SMEAR AND BREAST EXAMINATION
CAMP WAS HELD. TWENTY ONE PATIENTS WERE SCREENED FOR BOTH, EARLY DETECTION OF UTERUS
CERVICAL CANCER AND BREAST CANCER. PATIENTS WERE INTERROGATED, COUNSELLED, EXAMINED
AND INVESTIGATED FREE OF COST.
Dr Rajhu R Sahetya
Pap smear was taken and sent for analysis to Dr Lalpath lab, who
gracefully volunteered to provide results to patients free of cost.
Cervical cancer occurs when abnormal cells on the cervix
grow out of control. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that
opens into the vagina. Cervical cancer can often be successfully
treated when it's detected early. It is usually detected at a very
early stage through a Pap test.
Pap Test (Papanicolaou Test or Pap Smear)
A Pap test is a test that looks for changes in the cells of the
cervix. During the test, your doctor collects a small sample of
cells from the cervix, the lower part of your uterus. The cells are
sent to a lab and tested to see if they contain certain changes that
could turn into cervical cancer.
When your Pap test result is "abnormal," it means that the test
found some cells that don't look normal. They may not be cancer,
but you may need more testing to find out for sure.
Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women
worldwide. But in the United States and other countries where
cervical cancer screening is routine, this cancer is not so common.
Most cervical cancer is caused by a virus called human
papilloma virus, or HPV. You can get HPV by having sexual
contact with someone who has it. There are many types of the
HPV virus. Not all types of HPV cause cervical cancer. Some of
them cause genital warts, but other types may not cause any
symptoms.
Abnormal cervical cell changes rarely cause symptoms. But
you may have symptoms if those cell changes grow into cervical
cancer. Symptoms of cervical cancer may include:
• Bleeding from the vagina that is not normal, such as bleeding
between menstrual periods, after sex, or after menopause.
• Pain in the lower belly or pelvis.
• Pain during sex.
• Vaginal discharge that isn't normal.
The Pap test is the best way to find cervical cell changes that
can lead to cervical cancer. Regular Pap tests almost always show
these cell changes before they turn into cancer. It's important to

follow up with your doctor after any abnormal Pap test result so
you can treat abnormal cell changes. This may help prevent
cervical cancer.
What Is a Breast Self-Exam?
The breast self-exam is a way that you can check your breasts
for changes (such as lumps or thickenings). It includes looking at
and feeling your breast. Any unusual changes should be reported
to your doctor. When breast cancer is detected in its early stages,
your chances of surviving the disease are greatly improved.
What If You Find a Lump?
First, don't panic. Most lumps often turn out to be harmless cysts
or tissue changes related to your menstrual cycle. But you should
let your doctor know right away if you find anything unusual in
your breast. If it is cancer, the earlier it's found, the better. And if
it's not, testing can give you peace of mind.

Hello, I am Satish Vasvani. Eight
months back I had a heart attack. My
doctor says that now I should start
exercises but I am afraid to start as I
think it can cause the second attack.
What is your advice?
Hello Satish,
It is very important to resume back to a
normal lifestyle and according to me
exercise is a part of a normal life. You
can easily start your exercise if your
doctor has given you a green signal.
Exercise will help you to lose weight if
you require any, elevate your mood
and increase your stamina. Start it by
taking an electrocardiogram as this
test will predict as to how much
exercise a person's heart can tolerate.
Start exercising for not more than 30
minutes thrice a week. Stop if you feel
any kind of pain or get too tired or
fatigued. Do not execrate to an extent
that you get short of breath. Keep
sipping water in between your
workout. Exercise only under
supervision.

Tata to launch
Hexa SUV
MUMBAI: It was in March this year that Tata Motors
showcased its new SUV concept - Hexa. Though the
company has not said much about the car yet, it has come
to our knowledge that it plans to roll out the Hexa in India in
February, 2016.
One look at it and one is immediately reminded of the
Aria. However, considering the path Tata is taking after
having launched HorizoNext, there will be a few changes.
While the overall shape may remind you of the Aria,
there are certain design distinctions, like the bulge on the
bonnet, which makes it look a bit muscular, although there
aren't any flamboyant lines on the sides of the car. There are
also the new projector head-lamps, a new honeycomb
mesh front grille, newly designed fog-lamps, and a
redesigned airdam.
The Hexa is based on the Aria platform and features a
2.2-litre, 4-cylinder, VARICOR diesel unit that is good for
154bhp and 400Nm torque. The car is 4764mm long,
1895mm wide, 1780mm tall and has a wheelbase of
2850mm. While the showcased concept was a 6-seater,
expect either 7 or may be 8 seats in the production model.
Changes to the rear include LED tail-lamps, and a new
bumper in dual-tone paint scheme amongst others. Tata will
launch the car at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo and it will all
come down to how well the company prices the car.

OPENS NEW BOOKING OFFICE IN USA
Mewati Sitaram
MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Tourism Development
Corporation (MTDC) has gone global this time. In an
endeavour to attract more tourists from the United States
of America, MTDC has opened its first ever tourist
information and booking centre in USA. This step is a
great milestone for MTDC. It would easily attract foreign
tourists visiting Maharashtra. MTDC has appointed
Aishwarya Kokatay as its authorized representative at its
US office.
This new office will target atleast 100,000 tourists
every year to Maharashtra. The centre will be a booster in
bringing greater visibility to Maharashtra tourism assets in
the US. The office will act as a facilitating center to
mobilize US tourists smoothly to Maharashtra.
It will also provide an opportunity to showcase
Maharashtra's wealth. The popular tourist destinations
such as the caves of Ajanta-Ellora, prestige beaches,
pilgrimage sites such as Shirdi, Pandharpur, and lusting
hills stations like Matheran, Mahabaleshwar and heritage
and culture interesting tourist places in Mumbai.
Paraag Jain Nanutia (IAS), Managing Director,
MTDC, said, “The US
is a big potential market
for us. Every year we
receive nearly 22%
tourists on an average
from the US which is
higher compared to
other states in India. We
want to increase our
footprints in the US by
s t r e n g t h e n i n g o u r Paraag Jain Nanutia
marketing channels.
We are hopeful of meeting our tourist's arrival target with
this new arrangement.”
MTDC has been aggressively taking Maharashtra
tourism to foreign lands. Like the US, there are plans to
add more such facilitation centres in other countries, added
Jaiin. The centre in USA will provide information like
various destinations, connectivity route, information on
MTDC resorts, booking status and even booking packages
and the MTDC resorts will be possible from the new
MTDC office.

MEWATI SITARAM...
Can you describe a popular tourist destination in
Ethiopia for Indian tourists?
Ethiopia is a historical country. There are various

history, diverse ethnic group with their own languages,
cultures and traditions. It has magnificent scenery
embracing contrasting land features ranging from the tops of
rugged Simein Mountains to the depth of the Denakil
Depression. It is more than 100 meters below sea level, one
of the lowest dry land Points on Earth.
What type tourist destination does your country
have to offer to Indians?
Ethiopia has varied tourist destinations. There are
throughout the high-pick and lowest points - all kind of fauna
and flora species. The abundance of natural beauty,
astonishing Variety of land escapes. Afro-Alpine highlands
soaring to around 4300 meters, a chain of mountains, the

MALABAR HILL TO GET PIPED COOKING GAS CONNECTION
Mewati Sitaram
MALABAR HILL: It
is unbelievable but
true, one of the
India's oldest
Mahanagar (Mega
City) Malabar hill
areas, a richest
constituency is
deprived of piped
gas connection.
Chandani Nayak
But if everything
goes as per plan, it could be a thing of the past.
The Malabar Hill area will soon get piped gas
connection.
Local MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha has taken
keen initiative to bring piped gas in his
constituency and is going the extra mile to
make the dream of residents come true. He
recently organised a meeting of Resident
Associations and officials of Mahanagar Gas for
supply of piped cooking gas to the residences of
Malabar Hill assembly constituency.
The meeting was held at Orient Club at
Chowpatty where it was decided to make
available piped cooking gas in the next 1000
days to areas of Mahalaxmi, Tardeo,
Walkeshwar, Khetwadi, Girgaum and others in
Malabar Hill assembly constituency.
Many senior officials from Mahanagar Gas
limited attended the meeting and promised to
provide piped gas connections in the area. One
of the officials from Mahanagar Gas,
Unnikrishnan said, “We are trying our level best
to lay underground pipeline for quicker
connectivity but we are not getting appropriate
support from other agencies. If we get required
permission, then we can start piped gas very
soon.”
There are certain agencies which are
delaying in granting permission who attended
the meeting on behalf of Mahanagar Gas along
with two senior officials said that the project is
delayed as it requires cooperation from all the
government agencies involved.
MLA Lodha assured them support in
obtaining cooperation from all government
agencies. Everyone present thanked Lodha for
organizing this meeting to accelerate this much
delayed project.
It may be noted that Mumbai Island city was
the only area where piped gas were available
for residents of South Mumbai. In those days
the piped gas was provided by Bombay Gas
Company whose head office and plant was set
up Sewri area. Mahanagar Gas Corporation
supply its gas through plastic pipes where as
Bombay Gas company used to supply through
aluminium pipes.
Chandani Nayak, a resident of Shreepati
Arcade, one of the India's tallest building at
Nana Chowk said “Indeed it is a very good
initiative by local MLA if it is really implemented,
it can be a boon for residents. Basically, around
the world only piped gas is used and cylinders
are vanishing from developed countries. If
piped gas connection is started in the area then
every consumer of gas cylinder would
surrender their connection, which can be given
to those who are not having cylinder
connection.”
Padmakar Rokade Electoral Registration
Officer Malabar Hill Vidhansabha constituency
said “There are 2,77,677 registered voters in
Malabar Hill constituency and more and more
people are coming forward to enroll their
names in Electoral Rolls.”
