Enduring Corolla gets facelift

traction control. The entire range
is armed with driver and front
passenger front, side and front-rear
curtain shield airbags, plus a knee
airbag for the driver. All of which
adds up to bags of safety.
Two sporty newcomers are the
Levin SX and ZR that push the
Corolla into the upper echelons
of the compact hatch market.
In recent weeks I have driven
three offerings from the Corolla
catalogue, starting with the
$43,690 Levin ZR. You can nudge
this fairly heady price sticker past
$45,000 by ticking the option
box for the $1800 panoramic roof
complete with an electric sunshade.
The other two models sampled
were an entry level GX manual
priced at $33,490 and a mid-range
GLX costing $37,490. Of this trio,
the GLX felt the most complete all
rounder and best value for money.
The 103KW 1.8-litre motor
is a modest upgrade of the unit
used in the previous model but
distinguishes itself from its
predecessor by being noticeably
smoother and quieter. While the
throttle response is marginally
sharper off the mark, mid-rev
range acceleration is leisurely
compared to newer feistier engine
offerings in this market segment.
This motor has in various forms
served three generations of
Corolla, but time and its rivals,
have not only caught up, but over
taken it in some cases. Toyota,
with its huge resources, should be
able to produce a smarter, nippier
and more modern motor for what
is after all the company’s stellar
sales performer. Apart from the
entry-level GX that I enjoyed with
its neat and nifty six-speed manual
shift, the remaining models are
all wed to a seven-step CVT
automatic. It provides a seamless
but rather clinical and detached
gear shifting experience that those
who enjoy driving will find rather
unfulfilling. On hill climbs with

he Corolla is
Toyota’s biggest
star with nearly 50
years on the clock
as the company’s
top selling model, a
remarkable effort and a tribute to
its enduring popularity.
It got to these lofty heights and
stayed there for what seems like
an eternity not through sheer
brilliance, but by being brilliantly
competent. This vehicle is the “Mr
Dependable” of the car industry.
While there are flasher and fancier
models on the market, when it
comes down to it, the No 1 quality
many look for in their car is
day-in-day-out reliability and the
Corolla delivers big time.
The new 11th generation Corolla
launched here in late 2012 does
not deviate from that course, but
delivers it in a slicker-looking
contemporary European-style fivedoor hatchback body. An expanded
model line-up also broadens the
appeal of a car that already knows
how to attract buyers and plenty
of them.
While there is lots of choice
across all five versions of the
new Corolla, it is a one-trick
pony in the engine department.
The solitary offering is the same
1.8-litre dual variable valve-timed
petrol engine that has been cut
and pasted from the two previous
models.
Better aerodynamics and
shedding a few kilos has
apparently improved fuel economy
of 6.6l/100km from the CVT
automatic versions, although all
three offering I test drove came up
well short of that figure.
Toyota has upped its technology
game with this model, which
features Bluetooth hands-free
connectivity and audio streaming,
AUX and USB inputs, voice
recognition and multi information
display. The Corolla also has all its
safety ducks in a row with features
such as vehicle stability control and
transmission sounds busy and
more intrusive than I would expect
from one of the world’s most
popular cars.
Steeper downhill runs frequently
tripped the transmission’s electronic
brain into engine braking mode.
This set the revs soaring like
an eagle and the transmission
sounding like a lame duck. All of
this is triggered by the transmission
convincing itself the car was about
to take off downhill like a runaway
freight truck. I simply cannot
warm to the growing number of
interventionist automatics such as
this one. The fact is most drivers
are capable of deciding how much
downhill braking they require and
do not need some gate-crashing
automatic gearbox muscling in and
taking charge.
There are enough gains in height,
width and length to convince
most buyers that this is a bigger
and more accommodating Corolla
than before. A revamp of the cabin
architecture adds a modern look
and feel that owners will appreciate
along with the extra rear hatch
cargo space. Toyota has scrapped
the ineffectual bridged console of
the previous model and reverted
to a practical conventional dash
layout.
The European influence is
stronger in this model than any
other Corolla and with it comes
crisper road holding, along
with a supple ride that makes
traversing our sometimes grizzly
road surfaces more bearable. The
suspension is now in a much
happier space and so will the
driver be, with how it reacts more
intuitively to sudden changes in
direction or the shape of the road
surface. Another change for the
better is steering offering greater
levels of connectedness between
the driver and the action playing
out under the front wheels of the
car. In terms of ride and handing,
this Corolla has it nailed better
than any other I have driven.
