How to Make the Most of WorkForce 2013

You probably know that career fairs can be a great place for you to meet potential employers. But did you know that
you need to do more than print 30 copies of your resume, practice your handshake, and press your interview suit to
succeed at these events…

Before printing multiple copies of your resume, have others proofread it for typos. Recruiters hate those! We’ll
question your work ethic if you hand in a poorly written resume filled with mistakes. Also, don’t use “creative”
fonts or cram all your numerous awards and association memberships in a type size that is too small for the
naked eye. Remember, substance is the key. Your job at this point is to get through our first round of screening.
For that, you need a solid, well-written resume.

Stay away from creative, euphemistic phrases. Resist the temptation to stray from the normal, scannable
resume format. A resume I received for a sales position stated that the person’s job (with a fast-food chain) was
to “upsell” customers. I keep thinking to this day, “do you wanna supersize it?”

Take time before the career fair to find out which companies will be represented there. At a minimum, read
the career fair handout in advance of attending. You should know something about the participating companies
before you approach recruiters. Nothing ticks me off more than a student who approaches me at the table and
says, “So, tell me about your company…” I don’t mind telling you about my company or about the job
opportunities that are available, but I do mind having to do all the work. Worse, I’ll think you’re lazy if you
haven’t taken the time to learn something about the company.

Have a game plan and focus on no more than three companies you are truly interested in. Again, it’s
important to do a little advance research so that you can make an intelligent comment about the company you
are approaching. Try something like, “I understand that company SYZ is interested in opening a branch in ABC.
Do you think that will expand its overall product mix?” When you engage a recruiter in intelligent dialogue, you
stand out. You have limited time at the career fair, so use it wisely. Gather all the giveaways and competitive
literature first, enter the sweepstakes, and then focus on the companies you’ve chosen.

Prepare a two-to-three-line script for yourself. This part is tricky. You should try to impress recruiters within the
first few minutes of conversation. The problem is that others will also be trying to talk with those recruiters. If
you talk too long, you’ll create a bottleneck in the flow of traffic. If you see disgruntled fellow students behind
you waiting to introduce themselves to the recruiters, move on. This is not an interview. You can impress
employers at other times. Maintain good eye contact and offer a firm handshake and a few sentences telling us
what we want to know. That’s the formula that works.

Tell the recruiter your name, your class year, and whether you’re interested in a full-time, co-op, or internship
position. Follow with your career interest, your major(s), and finally, why you came to the company’s table. It’s
okay to flatter the recruiter, but be careful to be professional and keep the flattery focused on the company. For
example, you can say, “I heard that XYZ is pursuing a business strategy that includes merging business units to
create more synergy. I think that is a really strategic move.”

Don’t ask the recruiter personal questions. Such questions sound frivolous.

Don’t skirt the GPA issue. If you’re asked, tell the recruiter your cumulative and/or semester GPA. If you aren’t
sure, say what you think it is. If our GPA is not stellar, it may not matter, but you need to let us know what we’re
working with. Nothing is worse than asking us to listen to your reasoning about how your GPA is such and such
but if you factor in the wind change in the month of December, your GPA is really at a higher level.

When you give a recruiter your resume, ask what the next step is in the process. Recruiters worth their
weight will be able to tell you.
Selling Your Liberal Arts Major
Employers are seeking critical thinkers, problem solvers, effective communicators, and people who have
demonstrated that they can work well with others. These are important skills often associated with liberal
arts graduates. No matter what your major, you can be competitive if you can reflect your grasp of these skills
in your communication with employers. Here are some tips for success:
Craft your resume to emphasize your skills and experience rather than your major. Don’t hide your major, but
through your description of part-time jobs, internships, and involvement outside the classroom, take credit for
what you have done and know how to do!
Develop a strong objective statement that defines the type of positions for which you want to be considered.
This indicates that you have given thought to what you want to do and takes the emphasis off your major.
Include a skills summary on your resume in which you target those abilities which relate to the type of jobs
you are seeking. Always include computer-related skills, especially those that will be important in the type of
job you are seeking.
Wherever possible, describe what you have done in the jargon of the field you hope to enter. Be careful not
to overdo this, but it is especially important for a person with a “nonrelated” major to demonstrate some
familiarity with the field.
Don’t write your resume in terms of what you want or “require” of an employer/position, but rather in terms
of what you can bring to that employer in the position you desire.
Use your cover letter to emphasize your knowledge of what you can bring to this particular organization.
Briefly describe related experiences. Remember, it doesn’t matter where you gained the background (in a job,
volunteer experience, campus organization, or hobby)—the end result is what is important.
In interviews or conversations with employers, be prepared to talk about the type of position that interests
you and the skills you will bring to that type of position. Be positive about your major and why you chose it,
but focus on your skills and experience as a total “package” of what you can bring to the job.
