and democracy in the Middle East.
Thanking the AJC, which this year celebrates
its centenary, Ambassador Castellaneta affirmed
that Italy's friendship with Israel is a cornerstone
of his country's foreign policy, which supports
a democratic and open society such as Israel in
the Middle East. <>

towns and villages to meet with local
administrative officials, as well as cultural and
economic spokespersons. On May 26 the
Ambassador visited Fassuta, on June 14 Ummel-Fahm and on June 21 he met leading
representatives from Kiryat Tivon.
In Fassuta the Ambassador inaugurated an
Italian Day in the presence of the Mayor Dr.
George Ayoub and the Greek Catholic Bishop
of the Galilee Elias Shakkour. Also present
were Alam Henri, Mayor of Gesh-Gush Halav,
as well as a number of Israeli-Arab student
graduates from Italian universities. The initiative
was organized by the Haifa branch of the Italian
Cultural Institute. The Italian Day program
included two theatrical performances by the
Teatro dell’Arcobaleno, directed by Angelica
and Yehuda Calò Livné, and a concert by the
soprano Valeria Fubini.
Accompanied by his wife, Anna, and the
Director of the Cultural Institute in Haifa,
Edoardo Crisafulli, the Ambassador visited
Umm-el-Fahm, where he was received by Mayor
Sheikh Hashem Abdel Rahman and a group
of local Italian university graduates. The Mayor
underlined the desire of the Umm-el-Fahm
municipality to strengthen cultural ties with
Italian cities and reminded his guests of the
significance of Italian universities, which opened
their doors to Arab-Israeli students. The
Ambassador recalled the unceasing efforts of
the Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv and Haifa to
assist Israeli students who wish to pursue higher
studies at Italian universities, particularly the
usefulness of the course in scientific Italian
(Mechinà), which enables the students to prepare
for admission exams to Italian universities.
The Ambassador, accompanied by Edoardo
Crisafulli, continued his tour of Israel with a
visit to Kiryat Tivon where he was hosted by
Mayor Alon Navot (photo) and local officials.
The Mayor recalled his recent visit to La Spezia,
for the ceremony celebrating the assistance given
by the city's residents to Jewish refugees after
WWII, one of whom was his own father, and
the exhibition Exodus - Porta di Sion that
recounts the story of clandestine immigration
from La Spezia to Israel during that period. The
Mayor also endorsed the recently established
course in Italian organized in Tivon by the Haifa
branch of the Institute. <>
