Message from the President and CEO
and 2011 Board Chair
Dear Friends,
Most of us have heard the old saying, “bad things happen in threes.” This can certainly apply to the
challenges that the nonprofit sector, and particularly human services, has faced over the past several
years, due to the impact of the recession—
@@
@@
@@
Funding reductions from government contracts and grants, a primary funding source for human
services in our communities.
A significant drop in private philanthropy.
An increased demand for human services.
These three issues have prompted and sometimes forced us to rethink how we do business. Some
programs have been discontinued, and others are offered with longer waiting lists. We have seen
increased collaboration, mergers and some nonprofits close.
However, the news is not all bad. In fact, with your support, United Way of Westmoreland County is
addressing these challenges. In 2011, we funded 39 partner agencies to provide programs that promote
success in learning for life for our youngest residents, meet basic needs and enhance financial stability for
families and enhance health access and independence for older adults and people with disabilities.
In addition to working through our trusted partners, United Way has led several community
collaborations and offered programs and technical assistance to address otherwise unmet needs in our
community. We also played a key role in launching Southwest PA 2-1-1, a human services information and
referral service now available 24/7 in our region.
As we navigate through the challenges, it is important to celebrate the critical work accomplished
through your support. We hope you will read this report about how your United Way is investing in our
communities and review the list of our many corporate, foundation and individual donors who make it
possible.
With your help, United Way of Westmoreland County is countering the “bad things happening in
threes,” in three powerful ways—Giving, Advocating and Volunteering—advancing the common good for
residents in Westmoreland, Fayette and parts of Armstrong County.
In appreciation,
Bobbi Watt Geer, Ph.D.
President & CEO
Mary Ann Gawelek, Ed.D.

Some of the Kennametal Elves!
Thanks to a group of generous Kennametal
employees, the holidays were happier. Kennametal
elves spent the day shopping for and wrapping
hundreds of gifts for some of the County’s neediest
children: boots, coats, dolls, trucks, books and
mittens all purchased with money donated by
Kennametal employees. These donations were in
addition to their annual United Way contributions.
It was a great day for all involved. Thanks to
everyone who participated in this joyous event.

Success in Learning and Life
Books for Babies
Language development begins at birth and is a building block to
literacy. The single most significant factor influencing a child’s
early educational success is an introduction to books and being
read to at home. (National Commission on Reading)
“Books for Babies” is a program that
allows literacy to start at birth. Thanks to the
teamwork of Excela Westmoreland Hospital
Auxiliary and United Way, every baby born at
Westmoreland Hospital receives the newborn
book called, “Look Look!” Books for Babies is
also offered to parents and their newborns at
Uniontown Hospital, and all parents receive
resources about child development. Thanks
to this program, nearly 2,000 books are
given to babies at Westmoreland Hospital
6
and nearly 1,000 books are given to babies
at Uniontown Hospital annually. Reading to
newborns is essential for development of
social and emotional aspects as the child
hears different emotions with expressive
sounds. Reading encourages the child to
look, point, touch and answer questions.
This promotes social development skills and
thinking ability. Additionally, it sends the
message that reading is fun.
Enhancing early school success and increasing graduation rates
Communities in Schools - Dropout Prevention Program
Ashley, Shannon and KC participating in Communities in Schools
of Southwest PA, Inc., In-School Dropout Prevention Program at
Southmoreland High School
Success in Learning leads to success in
life. United Way and our non-profit partners
work to promote school success and to
provide critical supports when students’
success in school is threatened. When
first enrolling into the In-School Dropout
Prevention Program, these students had
little hope for their future educational
opportunities, lacking confidence that high
school graduation was attainable. Today, all
of them are looking forward to graduating
from high school and attribute their improved
school performance to the support of
Communities in Schools, In-School Dropout
Prevention Program. Renae Server, Student
Program Coordinator, states, “You might
be surprised as to how many adolescents
don’t even think beyond “today”. Far too
many students enter the program tarnished
by failing grades and poor attendance,
often labeled as “hopeless”. Praise and
encouragement have been lacking in their
lives. The job of the Student Coordinator is
to engage them in building the skills and
discipline required to improve in school
and instill hope. It’s great to witness these
kids beginning to realize that high school
graduation is within their reach and to begin
exploring continued education and training
programs.”
The In-School Dropout Prevention program
is one of six United Way Partner programs
working with nearly 2,000 youth to improve
school performance. Thanks to these other
nonprofit agencies that receive support from
the Impact Fund to ensure our children realize
success in learning and life!

Helping families in need and creating paths to family financial stability.
Mothers Making More (M3)
Becky, a single mother of two children
and an employee of Excela Health, enrolled
with Mothers Making More in the fall of
2010. Mothers Making More is a pilot
project, launched in 2010, as a strategy to
increase opportunities for single mothers
with children under the age of 18 to earn
family sustaining wages. In partnership
with Excela Health, Westmoreland County
Workforce Investment Board, Westmoreland
Community College, Seton Hill University,
and Westmoreland Community Action, this
project is supporting continued educational
efforts of single mothers in health career
fields identified as High Priority Occupations
in Westmoreland County and providing a
starting salary representative of a family
sustaining wage. These occupations include
IT technician, medical, cardiovascular or
radiologic technicians, respiratory therapists,
and registered nurses. Becky, a current
Medical Assistant at Chestnut Ridge Family
Medicine-Derry, has earned 20 credits toward
her Associates Degree in Diagnostic Medical
Sonography and is proud of her 3.0+ GPA.
With gratitude to her employer, Excela Health,
Becky notes, “This program has given me
options, support and a push to go forward.”

2011 Day of Caring
The 2011 Day of Caring was a huge success with
over 800 volunteers and more than 40 companies
participating. Projects ranged from painting and
landscaping to spending quality time with the
clients of local nonprofits. More than 70 projects
were scheduled and completed throughout the
Westmoreland and Fayette region.
David McDonald, Regional President of
WestPennPower Company, was this year’s Day of
Caring Chair. He commended all the volunteers
for participating and being “true heroes for the
community,” this year’s theme for the event.
Thank you. . . all of you - volunteers and
participating companies - for your hard work. We can’t
do it without you!
A special thanks to our 2011 Day of Caring

Kennametal Inc. was a big winner on this
day. They accepted three awards (Above and

Kennametal Inc. had the largest campaign
total, well over $500,000 locally. That is a
17% increase from last year. Of United Way’s
Tocqueville members, 14 of them are from
Kennametal Inc. Their volunteer team consists
of nearly 200 employees, including the
company President and his entire executive
staff. Employees serve as volunteers for
the Day of Caring, on the UWWC Board of
Directors, as Tocqueville Chair and as the
2011 Campaign Chair. Kennametal Inc. really
stands by their message of delivering their
promise to the community.

Health Access and Independence
Promoting leadership through philanthropy and engagement, United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council
(WLC) is improving lives and community conditions for our aging neighbors.
2011 marked the fifth anniversary of
United Way’s Faith in Action (FIA) expansion
efforts, supported by the Women’s
Leadership Council. This same year, the
National Council on Aging identified United
Way’s FIA expansion model as one of seven
nationwide effective, impactful, sustainable
and replicable, multi-generational civic
engagement programs.
Faith in Action enriches the lives of our
senior neighbors by matching volunteers
with elderly recipients in need of supportive
companionship and assistance, therefore
extending their ability to remain living
independently. Since inception, United
Way’s FIA sites have supported over 1,000
recipients who have faith in nearly 500
committed volunteers who have given
over 38,000 hours of time. Volunteers
provide a range of free services including
telephone reassurance, appointment escorts,
supportive errands, home visits, home safety
checks, and caregiver relief.
While United Way’s Women’s Leadership
Council investments serve as the foundation
of program support, these investments are
complimented by others from local business
14
and interfaith communities. Engagement and
support from local communities has proven to
be crucial in the continued expansion efforts.
Thanks to Jane Kerr, Executive Director, Laurel
Area Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers Faith in
Action, and Carol Ashton, Executive Director,
Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers of Fayette,
who introduced Faith in Action to our service
area and continue to offer consultation.
Nearly a decade ago, partnership with these
organizations began with small community
initiative grants and has since continued to
see increased Impact Fund grant support
in addition to increased local community
support.
Appreciation to Westmoreland County
Area Agency on Aging and Excela Health for
their ongoing advocacy for United Way’s
expansion efforts. Excela Health is an
especially generous supporter of United
Way’s Faith in Action efforts, hosting the
Jacobs Creek Area site at the Frick Hospital
campus, supporting Home Safety Checks as
a fall prevention strategy and sponsoring
special events across the FIA expansion
network. Excela Health is also a strong
campaign partner.
Supporting seniors and vulnerable populations living safe, healthy and independent.
Jacobs Creek Area Faith In Action recipient,
Mary Ann, with volunteers, left to right:
Addie Winzen, Doris Coughanour, Elizabeth
Cooley, Tom Fabiszewski
“My children are comforted to know
Faith in Action volunteers are there
when they can’t be.”
Mary Ann, a widow in declining health
with limited mobility contacted Jacobs Creek
Area Faith In Action (JCAFIA) for help after
reading an article about the site in the local
paper. Although one of her three children
lives locally and provides support, like many
who are trying to care for their aging parents,
her daughter’s work schedule and children’s
care and activities limit her availability.
Complicating matters, Mary Ann lives in
a town that requires everyone to have PO
boxes, yet the post office is not accessible.
Thus, her initial request was for someone
to pick up her mail once a week and deliver
to her. Mary Ann notes, “Faith in Action
has been a God-sent group of people. They
are not only a blessing with and for things
that I need, but they are like a family to me,
starting with sweet Melaney (JCAFIA program
director site coordinator). When she first
came to register me, I never expected such
a great turnout of volunteers.” Mary Ann
describes her volunteer family, “Addie and
Elizabeth, are like adopted granddaughters
to me. Elizabeth calls and visits at least
twice through the week while Addie brings
my mail, goes shopping for me and visits
with me. Addie’s mother, Jeanne, also helps
by sometimes getting the mail. Doris always
greets me with a friendly voice and arm to
hold, driving me to doctor appointments
and keeping me company while I wait for my
appointment time. She has gone shopping
with me and for me, calls to check in and
visits with me. And, last but not least, Tom,
who also helps me get to the doctors, and
shop for groceries. I am so thankful for each
and everyone. They are my lifeline.”
Like most FIA recipients, as Mary Ann’s
health has declined, her needs for supportive
assistance have increased. In her five-year
engagement with the program, volunteers
have provided over 400 hours of service.
Mary Ann concludes, “Like me, my family:
son, Larry; daughters, Eileen and Patti; send
many thanks and appreciation.”
Since inception in 2007, United Way
of Westmoreland County estimates
their Faith in Action sites realized
over $17M in long-term savings to
participating seniors, their families
and government resources (estimating
higher level of care delayed by 1-year
for 25% of recipients).

Women’s Leadership Council
The Women’s Leadership Council’s mission is to promote leadership
through philanthropy and engagement. The WLC is open to women in
our region who want to make an impact through their giving. Founded
in 2006, WLC has been a primary source of funding for Faith in Action, a program
that provides volunteer support to help older adults remain living safely and
independently in their own homes and communities.
The Women’s Leadership Council convenes meetings and events throughout the
year, offering members an opportunity to network with other women leaders and
aspiring leaders. Women’s Leadership Members contribute a minimum of $1,000
annually, and a step-up program for new members is available.

Stockings for Seniors
The holidays were a bit happier this year thanks to United Way’s Tocqueville
Society. Several members of the group gathered in early December to stuff
stockings for seniors. The stockings were packed full of treats and little extras
intended to add a bit of sparkle to the day of a local senior citizen. Stockings
were distributed to more than 100 very appreciative Faith in Action clients.
Thank you to all of the Tocqueville members who were able to join us. It was
a festive and very enjoyable evening!
Special thanks to Tocqueville Chair, Phil Weihl, for making the project such
a success.
