WHY MONARCHS?
Many people have wondered how the Old Dominion University athletic teams came to be
officially known as the
Monarchs.
For many years, the
athletic teams of the
Norfolk Division of the
College of William &
Mary (as Old Dominion
was formerly called)
were known as the
Braves. This was a derivation of the William &
Mary nickname of Indians. As Old Dominion achieved its own fouryear status and saw its enrollment surpass that of its Williamsburg
neighbor, it was no longer suitable or acceptable to have its teams
called the Braves.
The name Monarchs evokes much of the early history of the Commonwealth of Virginia and of Old Dominion’s mother institution, the
College of William and Mary. The nickname “Old Dominion” was first
coined to the Virginia colony by King Charles II after Virginia’s loyalty to the crown during the English Civil War. Furthermore, William
III and Mary II, whose patronage helped found the College of William
and Mary in Virginia in 1693, ruled England at the invitation of Parliament as “joint monarchs.”
The Monarch used by Old Dominion has a royal crown on a lion’s
head, representing an historic past and a strong future. The school's
current family of athletic logos were adopted in April of 2002.

VaSID Coach of the Year
three-time CAA Coach of the Year,
head coach Alan Dawson enters
his ninth season guiding the
Monarchs. In just a few short
years, Dawson has led the Old
Dominion University men’s soccer team back to
national prominence.
Last year, the Monarchs were 13-6-2 and
reached the championship match of the Colonial
Athletic Association. They also played a 2nd
round NCAA tourney match for the third
consecutive season. For the first time in school
history, ODU was awarded a number 12 seed and
a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament. The
soccer Monarchs defeated North Carolina,
Rutgers, and handed CAA rival James Madison
it’s first loss of the year. The Monarchs’ 13 wins
marked the fifth time in 6 seasons that Dawson
has led his team to double-digit wins.
In 2003, the Monarchs reached the second
round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating N.C.
State at home in the first round before falling to
#2 seed Maryland on the r oad in the second
round. The Monarchs were ranked as high as #2
during a season that saw ODU race to a 14-0-0
start and become the last Division I team to lose
a match. The Monarchs started the season with
a nine game shutout streak before VC found the
net in the 10th game. For his efforts, Dawson
received his third CAA Coach of the Year award
and was named the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) South-Atlantic
Coach of the Year.
In 2001, the Monarchs finished 10-6-2 as
CAA semifinalists and captured a slew of postseason awards, including Dawson’s second CAA
Coach of the Year honor. In 1999, the men’s team
finished 15-4-0, winning the CAA regular season
title and earning him CAA Coach of the Year
honors and the Virginia Sports Information
Directors’ Coach of the Year Award. Coming into
2005, Dawson’s Monarchs will look once again
to challenge for another title run.
Dawson, a former assistant coach at the
University of North Carolina (1996) and a twotime NCAA Division III South Region Coach of
the Year at Methodist, has always been known
Coach Dawson with 2003 CAA Defender of the year Trevor McEachron
as a winner. In 1995, he led Methodist to the
NCAA Division III Championship game. While
at Methodist, he guided the school to seven
consecutive conference championships and six
straight NCAA tournament appearances in only
nine seasons. He was inducted into the Methodist
College Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
His combined career record at Methodist
was 129-30-1 and his squads finished in the top
10 of the ISAA national polls for seven consecutive
seasons. The 1995 team was ranked number one
nationally all eight weeks of the regular season
as it advanced to the 1995 championship game.
He also guided Methodist squads to the round of
16 in 1990 and 1991 and into the quarterfinals in
1992.
Dawson accumulated several coaching
awards during his stay at Methodist. He garnered
Dixie Conference Coach of the Year honors five
times and South Region Coach of the Year honors
in 1990 and 1995. He produced 32 All-South
selections, seven All-Americans, and two
Academic All-Americans during his tenure at the
school.
Dawson also coached three teams to
undefeated seasons: in 1991 (15-0-3), 1992 (14-02) and 1993 (17-0-0). He served as head coach of
the North Carolina Olympic Development team
from 1989-94, winning the USSF Region III
championship game in 1993. He was a USSF
South Region (III) staff member from 1992 to 1996,
and served as the 1979 Region III head coach.
From 1988-91, Dawson served as a member
of the NCAA Division III South Region selection
committee and is currently a member of the
Adidas Scholar-Athlete All-American Committee.
He has also served as Chairman of the
Intercollegiate Soccer Association South Region
rating committee. For the third straight year,
Dawson will be a member of the NCAA Regional
Selection Committee for the South-Atlantic
Region.
Before coaching at Methodist, he served as
a graduate assistant coach at UNC-Greensboro
from 1984-86. UNCG reached the NCAA Division
III quarterfinals in 1984 and won the
championship in 1985. He also led the Virginia
ODP team to back-to-back regional
championships as the head coach in 1999 and
2000.
Dawson holds a United States Soccer
Federation (USSF) ‘B’ license, and a Full Irish
Badge (Grade One) coaching license. Dawson
earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political
science from Lock Haven University in 1984, and
a Master of Science degree in physical education
from the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro in 1986.
He and his wife Mari have three children,
Alec (14), Garrick (13) and Ellesse (11). Alan is
the son of Isabel and Stanley Dawson of Belfast,
Northern Ireland.

TRAINER
◆ Duquesne University
◆
Brian Beck is in his first year in the Old
Dominion University athletic training
program. Along with performing general
duties in the training office, Brian will be
working with men’s soccer in the fall and
men’s baseball in the spring. A native of
Pittsburgh, PA, Brian graduated from
Duquesne University with a B.S. degree in
Athletic Training. He is pursuing a master’s degree in
athletic training here at ODU. Brian is the son of Charles
and Sandy Beck, and has two sisters, Holly and Tracy.
2005 Outlook
Monarchs continue Successful Climb to National Prominence
ODU gunning for CAA Title, Fourth-Straight NCAA Appearance
The Old Dominion men’s soccer team, under the guidance of Coach Alan Dawson,
continues to set school milestones as the program climbs it’s way to national prominence.
In 2003, the Monarchs were the last Division I squad to be defeated and were ranked as
high as #2 during the season. Last season, the Monar chs finished with a 13-6-2 record and
accomplished something no other ODU men’s soccer team could- earn a seed in the NCAA
tournament (#12). After three consecutive NCAA tourney appearances, the Monarchs are
primed to take the program to even further heights.
The Monarchs lost six seniors, including Monarch great Kevon Harris, to
graduation, but still return 10 players and eight starters from their 2004 squad. In that list
is former first-team All-American and Senior Trevor McEachron, making a comeback after
sitting out 2004 with an injury. Another solid recruiting job by Dawson will shore up the
team’s depth situation, and hopefully prepare the Monarchs for more NCAA tournament
appearances in the near future.
In 2004, the CAA runner-up Monarchs were ranked as high as #4 in the country, and
ultimately finished ranked #19 nationally. Coach Dawson believes that now is the time to
take matters one step further. “We were disappointed we didn’t win the conference last
year, and that will be a goal of ours this season- to be in the mix for the CAA title. We
would like to host the CAA finals- so that is very much something in the second half of the
season that we will focus on,” says Dawson.
Forwards
Senior Brian Cvilikas (Highland Springs, CO), fast approaching the Monarch alltime scoring leader charts with 40 career points, is the central figure of this unit. After
finishing third on the team in points last year with 15, 2005 looks to be a possible
springboard for Cvilikas to explore a possible professional playing career after his
collegiate days are done.
Edson Elcock (Brooklyn, NY), and Ross Mackenzie (Richmond, VA), both juniors,
are coming off fine 2004 campaigns. Elcock netted five goals, which includes two gamewinners. He also had a terrific spring, and should really turn the corner in 2005.
MacKenzie is another key offensive figure for the Monarchs, and possesses a true nose for
scoring goals. Elcock and Mackenzie have a chance to become a prolific scoring duo at
forward for the Monarchs.
Midfielders
ODU is loaded with depth and ability at the midfield positions this season, as the
team has several capable midfield players ready to take advantage of their opportunity to
shine. Dawson calls junior Gregg Mottinger (Carrollton, TX) the “anchor” of this unit.
Mottinger is a very active and steady presence for the Monarchs in the crucial position of
center midfield. Jared Kent (Marietta, GA) returned to the Monarchs last season after
spending two years on a Mormon mission and quickly made his presence known, nabbing
CAA All-Tournament honors. Dawson calls Kent one of the most talented players he has
coached, adding, “he is the maestro in terms of his technique and ability to dictate a
game.”
Sophomore A.J. Kulp (Ephrata, PA), who is pushing for an attacking midfield role, is
expected to contribute offensively this season finishing scoring chances and could be a
breakout player in 2005. Pambos Demetriades returns to the Monarchs this season after
contributing for the squad in 2003.
Defenders
Defense has been one of the more consistent strengths for the Monarchs in the past
few years, allowing the team to earn 17 shutouts the last two seasons. This year’s edition
should continue on the defensive tradition. “As it relates to specific positions, the defense
will be our mainstay this season. I think we will be strong in the back, and if we build our
season from that premise first, we should have a good year,” says Dawson.
Former All-American Trevor McEachron’s comeback from a knee injury is the big
story for the defensive unit in 2005. “He has worked extremely hard, and has went
through 7 operations, and will be back on the pitch. He has shown a tremendous attitude
and work habit to get back to this point. Trevor is excited to be back, and we’re excited to
have him because he brings a presence you can not put a price on,” says Dawson. If
McEachron can play anywhere near the level that he did before his injury in 2003, the
Monarch D will be in excellent shape.
All-CAA Rookie team honoree David Horst (Pine Grove) is back to continue piling
up accolades and preventing scoring opportunities for opponents. Horst dropped almost
10 pounds in the offseason and is more mobile than ever. Dawson expects big things from
Horst in 2005.
Ado Fazlic (Richmond, VA) returns for his senior year and aims to challenge for a
starting role on defense after spending most of his career at forward. “Ado is a true
Monarch who will sacrifice for the cause no matter what. He is an essential element to our
squad,” says Dawson.
Bamidele Oluwalana (Oslo, Norway) is a senior who Dawson is high on. “He has a
lot of confidence, and played over the summer a lot. Bami is very fit and focused,” says
Dawson. Justin Monroe (Disputanta, VA) is a highly athletic defender who could seriously
challenge for a starting position if he can keep his focus
Goalkeepers
ODU returns their starting goalkeeper from last season, senior John Connelly (Rockville,
MD). Connelly earned eight shutouts last season, a 1.07 goals against average, and helped
lead the Monarchs to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Jon Curry-Edwards (Brielle, NJ) had a tremendous spring season, and will challenge the
incumbent for the starting position between the pipes this season. Dawson says, “Jon had a
tremendous spring season, and in some regard might push John, so that will be a real
interesting preseason camp challenge. A transfer from Lynchburg, senior Dan Ruch, could
also push for playing time this season.
2003 All-American Trevor McEachron makes his comeback from a knee injury in 2005
Newcomers
Ten newcomers will be calling themselves Monarchs in 2005, and there appears to
be a load of potential and possibilities from this incoming group. Dan Ruch could
challenge for a starting position at keeper. Djordje Jankovic played on the U-16 national
team in Serbia and will provide the Monarch’s a left-footed defensive presence in the near
future. Trevor Banks, from Milwaukee, was the Midwest Region II captain for a tour in
Italy and was also an Adidas ESP All-Star. He is a versatile player who can contribute
anywhere on the field.
Steve Rupp is from Fredericksburg, a Virginia Olympic Development Program
player, and is a very strong physical defender. Transfer Yomby William has made his way
to Old Dominion via Cameroon and Dschang University. “He’s big, strong, very athletic,
technically sound with the ball, and we’re real excited to have him. He should be a very
good player for us,” says Dawson. Bobby Fogelsong is an attacking midfielder who
played for the Virginia ODP as well, and is extremely talented and technical.
Jason Loizou is a local product from Cox HS who plays with good pace, and could
be a prolific goal scorer if he can adjust to the collegiate level. Truls Kjendlie, from
Norway, is a transfer from Pacific Lutheran. Kjendlie should contribute in the defense and
midfield. “Kjendlie is athletic, technical, should be a wing player who provides good
service, and we think he can help us right away,” Dawson noted. Justin Vaughter, from
Richmond, is a sophomore transfer from Alabama A&M whose very technically sound.
Vaughter is a dynamic player who should see time at both the forward and midfield
positions. Finally, Aaron Good is a possession midfielder from Pennsylvania who played
pre-collegiate with and against current Monarchs David Horst and A.J. Kulp.
Schedule and Outlook
ODU is once again staring at a very challenging schedule in 2005. The Monarchs
will face five ACC teams, traveling to Chapel Hill, NC to challenge North Carolina,
hosting Virginia Tech in an exhibition, and welcoming Clemson along with North Carolina
State. Virginia makes their first appearance in Norfolk since 1997, when ODU upset the
#1 ranked Cavaliers. Clemson, Rhode Island, and William & Mary comprise the Stihl
Soccer Classic participants this year, and it should be one of the strongest Stihl fields to
date. “The Stihl Classic field is excellent,” says Dawson. “We’re very excited. William &
Mary of course, is back. Rhode Island is an NCAA team from last year, and is always
competitive. Of course, Clemson is an ACC powerhouse who has had an excellent
recruiting class and are always well coached.”
Once again, the Monarchs will kick off the regular season with an extended
homestand, hosting N.C. State before commencing the Stihl Classic with matches against
Rhode Island and Clemson. The Monarchs will follow up the Stihl Classic with another
home match against up and coming Elon. ODU’s game against Virginia is sandwiched
between three trips to North Carolina to challenge North Carolina, Davidson, and their
first CAA conference match against UNC-Wilmington. As it relates to their CAA schedule,
the Monarchs will hit the road to face UNCW, George Mason, Towson, Delaware, Drexel,
and William & Mary, and will host Hofstra, VCU, James Madison, and the two newest
CAA additions- Georgia State and Northeastern. “Two more teams means that the last
couple weeks of conference play will be a dogfight to see who gets into the tournament,”
says Dawson, referring to Georgia State and Northeastern.
After making three consecutive appearances in the second round of the NCAA
College Cup, and earning the nation’s 7th highest all-time home winning streak at 22
games, the Monarchs are hoping to once again make some post-season noise. They will
need to get through five CAA teams who finished in the top 45 in RPI rankings last
season, along with the nation’s 4th toughest conference for men’s soccer, but Dawson
believes that the challenging non-conference schedule will have his players ready.
“If we can do well in the first half of the season, it will help prepare us for a very
difficult CAA campaign,” says Dawson. “We will take things one game at a time, and stay
focused on our goals.”

N
orfolk serves as the cultural, financial and
business hub of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, which comprises the
cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia
Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, and Newport
News. With a combined population of 1.5 million,
the Hampton Roads area is the 27th largest Metropolitan Statistical Area in the U.S. and in 1998 was
rated the number one city in the south by Money
magazine.
Founded in 1682, Norfolk has been a gateway
to Virginia for commerce and industry since the early
17th century.
The city is home to the Norfolk Naval Base, the
world’s largest naval installation and homeport to
the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic and Mediterranean fleets;
the MacArthur Memorial, the final resting place of
famed General Douglas MacArthur; The Chrysler
Museum, an art museum showcasing the collection
of Walter P. Chrysler, son of the auto company
founder; and Norfolk Botanical Garden, host to
many celebrations including the International Azalea Festival.
Norfolk’s 12,000-seat Harbor Park is home to
the Norfolk Tides, the top minor league team in the
New York Mets organization.
Waterside marketplace and Town Point Park
create a lively waterfront activity center for outdoor
concerts, many festivals, and dining with the best
sunset views around.
Hampton Roads

Tall ship cruises, harborside shops, the quaint
whistle of the Elizabeth River Ferry, the new Nauticus,
one of the nation’s premier maritime museums and
learning centers, and a climate ranked among the
nation's most desirable, all make Norfolk an exciting
location for university studies.
Just 20 minutes from downtown Norfolk is the
oceanfront resort city of Virginia Beach, with its miles
of beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake
Bay.
Hampton is home to NASA’s Langley research
center as well as Langley Air Force Base, while Newport News is the location of the Newport News Shipbuilding Company, manufacturer of the Nimitz-class
aircraft carriers.
Just 45 minutes west of Norfolk is the JamestownWilliamsburg-Yorktown triangle, where, it can be said,
the nation was founded, debated its independence,
and then won it on the battlefield.
Also within an easy drive are Richmond, the capital of Virginia and former capital of the Confederacy
during the Civil War; the North Carolina Outer Banks,
including the Wright Brothers Memorial at Kitty
Hawk and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore; and
the nation’s capital in Washington, D.C.

ld Dominion University
opened its doors 75 years
ago in an abandoned pub
lic school building with
206 students as the Nor
folk Division of the College of William and Mary, and became an
independent institution in 1962.
Today, the University enrolls more
than 20,000 students, including approximately 6,200 graduate students. Its 185-acre
Norfolk campus is the primary hub of activity, along with four additional higher
education centers (Virginia Beach Center,
Peninsula Center, Tri-Cities Center and
Northern Virginia Center).
Old Dominion is a versatile university,
committed to its students, their education,
personal development and overall success.
The University offers 67 bachelor's degrees,
65 master's degrees, 26 doctoral degrees
and two education specialist degrees, and
consists of six colleges: Arts and Letters,
Business and Public Administration, Education, Engineering and Technology, Health
Sciences, and Sciences.
Students who live on campus may
choose residence hall or apartment-style
living. The attractive Webb University Center provides a bookstore, cafeteria, food
court, game room, lounge areas, and other
shops and offices to serve the student body.
Old Dominion is one of Virginia's leading Ph.D. research institutions. The University contributes approximately $600 million
a year to the Hampton Roads economy and
provides the community with a variety of
programs and services, including the Applied Research Center, Technology Applications Center, Military Career Transition
Program, Executive Development Center
and the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and
Simulation Center. A leader in space-related
research, Old Dominion ranks first in the
state in funding from NASA for research
projects. The University operates one of the
largest wind tunnels in the world at
NASA's Langley Research Center, and its
Oceanography, Nuclear Physics, and Modeling and Simulation programs are among
the best in the nation.
The University Village, a 75-acre development along the east side of Hampton
Boulevard, is yet another economic spark
for the region. The 8,600-seat Ted Constant
Convocation Center, which opened in fall
2002, is
the centerpiece of the project. The Village
also currently includes 270 modern apartment units for students, a fitness center and
a variety of restaurants. Plans call for the
addition of a hotel and parking garage, research facilities and a shopping center with
a large grocery store.
In the classroom, Old Dominion students continue to earn high marks. The University boasts three USA Today Academic
All-Americans and a Truman Fellow. ODU's
first Rhodes Scholar is former student-athlete Samantha Salvia, a 1996 graduate.
An international leader in delivering
interactive instructional television, the Uni-
versity operates TELETECHNET, a distance
learning system that offers students an opportunity to earn one of 17 baccalaureate
and
eight master's degrees, as well as one doctoral degree, without leaving their area of
residence. Since its inception in 1992,
TELETECHNET has become the largest
televised, interactive distance learning program of its kind in the United States.
Old Dominion is also well known for
its international focus in both its curricula
and student population. More than 1,100
international students from 100 countries
are enrolled at the University.
The University also contributes to the
cultural life of Hampton Roads by presenting music and dance concerts, art exhibits,

and annual literary and film and video festivals. In addition, the President's Lecture
Series brings nationally known speakers to
campus each year.
The University is located about 200
miles south of Washington, D.C., and is but
a short drive to Virginia Beach and the
Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Old Dominion
Soccer Stadium
20
Above, the new soccer building will be completed in 2006.
W
e built it, and they came. The Old Dominion
University Soccer Stadium has become not only
one of the most visited sites on campus, but has
claimed it’s fame as home to some of the biggest, most
boisterous crowds in collegiate soccer.
Fans young and old regularly flock to the stadium
and its first seven seasons, the stadium has taken its place as
one of the top facilities in collegiate soccer.
The spacious facility is located at the corner of 43rd
Street and Parker Avenue, directly across the street from the
Bud Metheny Baseball Complex, and boasts seating for 4,000
fans. Permanent lighting illuminates action at night, and fans
also appreciate the array of refreshments available at the
concession booth, located under the west stands, along with
restrooms.
Sitting atop the west stands is a modern, fullyequipped press box, which allows media to view the game,
and file their stories immediately afterward. Separate areas
for television cameras are also available.
The field itself is Bermuda grass with a sand base,
and conforms to both NCAA and international standards.
“The is one of the best ‘soccer only’ facilities in the
country,” said Head Coach Alan Dawson. “One of the first
built specifically for soccer, and still one of the premier
facilities in the country. A facility like ours helps us not only
as one of the best sites for games and tournaments, but will
also enable us to recruit the top student-athletes.”
The Old Dominion Soccer Stadium has also served
as a site for numerous prestigious events in its short history,
including CAA championships and numerous state high
school championships. Two summers ago, Old Dominion
hosted the Adidas soccer camp, which brought in the best
high school soccer players from all over the country. In the
summer of 1994, the stadium served as the site of the U.S.
U-23 team’s 1-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, which was
broadcast back to the Caribbean. In June of 1992, Old
Dominion hosted the United States Olympics Soccer team
vs. the Bermuda National Team in the final warm-up for
the U.S. prior to the Olympics in Barcelona. A stadiumrecord crowd of 3,933 watched the match. Old Dominion
has also hosted back-to-back NCAA Tournament games, in
2002 and 2003.
In addition to the stadium, a newly constructed
state-of-the-art practice field has been opened for the
Monarchs teams. Located behind the stadium and across
Powhatan Avenue, the practice facility is fenced-in, irrigated
and of the finest quality, with Tifton 419 Bermuda grass.
Coming in 2006, the ODU Soccer Programs will
boast brand new locker rooms and office facilities located
overlooking the stadium. This state-of-the-art building will
complete the ODU Soccer Stadium as one of the finest of its
kind in the nation.
Athletic Facilities
O
ld Dominion University prides itself on be
ing able to offer the student-athlete the best
possible facilities to achieve maximum potential on the field.
The Intercollegiate Athletics Building, will undergo
a renovation in 2005, houses both strength training and
athletic training facilities which are always at the full disposal of the student-athlete. The expanded building
will also be the home to academic advising.
The athletic training room provides the best in
modern rehabilitation equipment for athletic injuries. The
seven-foot deep running pool, located in the hydrotherapy room, along with three whirlpools and one
jacuzzi, provides Old Dominion athletes the opportunity
to rehabilitate through exercise in water. The room also
includes nine training tables, a Kinkom rehabilitation machine, and a traction table. The athletic training room is
under the supervision of Head Athletic Trainer Marty
Bradley, M.S., A.T.,C., and his two full-time assistants,
along with a staff of graduate assistants and student assistants.
The strength training room, built specifically for student-athlete use. The room includes the most up-to-date

Zucker.
The Intercollegiate Athletics Building also houses
the administrative staff including the athletic director, the
associate and assistant athletic directors, the offices of
sports information, promotions, and the ticket office. The
Athletic Support Office and Buildings and Grounds offices are also located in the Intercollegiate Athletics Building. The Intercollegiate Athletics Building is located in
the middle of the athletic quadrant of the campus that
includes the 4,000 seat Old Dominion Soccer Stadium,
the 2,500 seat Bud Metheny Baseball Complex, the 15court
ODU Tennis Complex that includes a 1,000 seat
championship court, and the Health & Physical Education Building. The H&PE Building contains the 5,500 seat
Old Dominion Fieldhouse and the J.C. “Scrap” Chandler
Pool. The ODU Tennis Complex, Soccer Stadium and the
Health & Physical Education Building will also undergo

academic year. Foreman Field, located behind Rollins
Hall on the northern edge of the campus, is home to the
field hockey and lacrosse teams, as well as being the site
for much of Old Dominion’s intramural sports program.
The Old Dominion Sailing Center is located on the
Elizabeth River on the western side of the campus and
serves as home to the Monarch sailing program. Featuring a 200-foot pier and launch area, the Sailing Center

Canada and of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Jim Jarrett
AT H L E T I C D I R E C T O R
When Jim Jarrett arrived on the campus of Old Dominion University in the
fall of 1967 as a Health and Physical Education professor, he had little idea that
his tenure would be counted in decades. During that time span, he has led the
program from a well respected NCAA Division II member to a nationally respected Division I power that has captured 25 national championships.
Jarrett began his 34th year as athletic director in 2004, taking over the reigns
in 1970 when Bud Metheny stepped down from that position. As one of the
youngest athletic directors in the nation at that time, Jarrett quickly began to
make a name for himself and ODU. He committed early on to a philosophy of
“selective excellence,” whereby the department “selected” its competitive sports
and committed itself financially, academically and competitively to the sports
it felt the University could best excel.
In 1974, Jarrett became the first athletic director in the state of Virginia to
award grant-in-aids to women student-athletes. It was a bold move at the time
for a young athletic director and equally young University, but one that paid
great dividends. Just five years later, in 1979, the Lady Monarchs won the first
of three national championships in women’s basketball, and led the nation in attendance.
Under his leadership, the department’s athletic venues have tripled and are considered state of the art
facilities. They include the construction of the 2,500-seat Bud Metheny Baseball Complex in 1983, the Sailing
Center in 1981, the Outdoor Tennis Complex which has been expanded to 15 lighted courts and a championship court with seating for 1,000-plus, the 4,000-seat ODU Soccer Stadium in 1990, renovations to Foreman
Field, which included Astro-Turf and new locker room facilities, and the 8,600 seat Constant Convocation
Center.
For all his efforts, Jarrett’s has been honored many times by national and local groups. Most recently,
Jarrett was named the 2003 Southeast Regional Athletic Director of the Year by NACDA. Other awards
receive include the Collegiate Director’s Award from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, and the
Norfolk Sports Club Man of the Year. He served as a member of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Committee
and is a past president of the Colonial Athletic Association and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
An avid golfer, Jarrett and his wife Sugie reside in Norfolk.

2004 Review
OLD DOMINION MEN’S SOCCER
T
24
he Old Dominion men’s
soccer team once again
made program history in
2004 by securing the #12
seed and a first round bye
in the NCAA Tournament.
The seeding was the first ever for the
Monarchs and allowed ODU to host a
second round match in the NCAA
Tournament. The Monarchs also continued
their regular season unbeaten streak at
home to 23 matches, and have not lost a
regular season home game since September
15, 2002 (Coastal Carolina.)
ODU started out the season 5-0-0,
winning their second straight Stihl Soccer
Classic after defeating Stihl participants
Navy 5-1 and Rutgers 1-0, and defeating
perennial power North Carolina 3-2 at the
ODU Soccer Stadium. The Monarchs went
0-1-1 during the William & Mary Tribe
Soccer Classic and the following weekend,
dropped their first two Colonial Athletic
Association games: a 2-0 loss at UNCWilmington and a 3-1 loss at #22 Virginia
Commonwealth. The Monarchs went 3-01 in their next four games, setting up for a
showdown with #9 James Madison, who
at 12-0-1, was one of only two unbeaten
teams in the country. ODU prevailed 1-0,
off an early second half goal by Senior
Midfielder Kevon Harris. The Monarchs
went 2-1 in their remaining regular season
games, defeating George Mason 2-0 and
William & Mary 3-2 in overtime. ODU
dropped a 4-1 game at #7 Virginia.
The Monarchs finished the regular
season with a 11-4-2 record, and a 6-2-1
mark in the CAA. The #3 seed in the CAA
Tournament, ODU knocked off #6 seed
William & Mary in the Quarterfinals 2-0.
The Monarchs then knocked off #2 seed
James Madison 3-1 in the Semifinals to
advance to the CAA Tournament Finals for
the first time since the 1993 season. In the
finals, ODU dropped a 1-0 decision to #5
seed Hofstra.
The Monarchs earned their third
straight at-large berth in the NCAA
Tournament and with the first round bye,
advanced to the second round for the third
straight year. ODU played host to the Duke
Blue Devils, who had defeated Coastal
Carolina 3-0 in the first round, dropping a
2-1 overtime decision. The game was
scoreless until the 73rd minute, when Duke
connected on a Penalty Kick. Senior Kyle
Hartley tied the game at 1-1 during the 82nd
minute, but a blast from 25-yards out by
Duke’s Paul Dudley ended ODU’s season.
The loss also ended ODU’s 22-game home
winning streak, which ranks seventh alltime.
Kevon Harris was named to the AllCAA First Team for the second consecutive
year, and was also named to the NSCAA
All-South Atlantic First Team, NSCAA/
Adidas All-American Second Team and
VaSID All-State First Team. Junior Forward
Brian Cvilikas was named to the All-CAA
Second Team, also for the second straight
year, while Defender David Horst was
named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.
Kevon Harris led the team in scoring
with 19 points (seven goals, five assists),
while Kyle Hartley led all forwards in
scoring with 16 points (seven goals, two
assists). Redshirt Junior Goalkeeper John
Connelly earned eight shutouts for the
season, with a 1.07 Goals Against Average,
allowing only 23 goals in 21 games. Brian
Cvilikas had another fine season, netting
five goals and dishing out five assists to
finish third on the team in points (15).
Kevon Harris was selected to
participate in the Major League Soccer
Player Combine, the second straight year
a Monarch was included, and was drafted
by the Virginia Beach Mariners of the ALeague.

SOCCER CLASSIC
Old Dominion University

ld Dominion University welcomed STIHL as the title
sponsor for the 1997 Old Dominion Soccer Classic, continuing a
tournament with a tradition of over 20 years.
Originally started in 1976 as the Harbor Front Kiwanis Classic, MetLife
joined the partnership in 1986 and the tournament became the "Old
Dominion MetLife Classic presented by the Harbor Front Kiwanis Club."
Thanks to the corporate partnership with STIHL, the tournament
continues as the "STIHL Soccer Classic, presented by the Harbor Front
Kiwanis Club and Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel."
The tournament champion receives the Queen’s Cup, originally
presented to Old Dominion by British soldiers stationed in Hampton Roads.
The STIHL Soccer Classic continues the longstanding tradition of
bringing some of the top teams regionally and nationally to Old Dominion
for tournament play. Past tournament fields have included Virginia, UCLA,
William and Mary, Wake Forest, Rutgers and Cal-Berkeley.
This year’s tournament features Clemson, Rhode Island, and William
and Mary.
Clemson and William and Mary will face each other at 4:30 p.m. on
Friday, Sept. 9, followed by Old Dominion and Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m. The
pairings on Sunday, Sept. 11, will see William and Mary battle Rhode Island
at noon, with Old Dominion and Clemson squaring off in the tourney finale
at 2:30 p.m.

Colonial Athletic Association
The Colonial Athletic Association expands to twelve teams in 2005-06, with the addition of Georgia State and Northeastern.
Fresh off the celebration of its 20th Anniversary, the
Colonial Athletic Association enters its third decade
with two new members and an expanded geographic
footprint that gives the conference a presence in five of
the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas.
The addition of Georgia State University in Atlanta
and Northeastern University in Boston brings the
membership of the CAA to 12 and enhances the
league’s reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate
conferences both athletically and academically. On the
playing field, the CAA has produced 16 national team
champions in five different sports, 33 individual
national champions, 11 national coaches of the year, 11
national players of the year and 12 Honda Award
winners. Even more impressive, however, are the
honors accumulated away from competition, which
include five Rhodes Scholars and 16 NCAA postgraduate scholars. In 2004-05, the CAA had seven
CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and more than 1,500
student-athletes posted at least a 3.2 grade point
average while lettering in a varsity sport and received
the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award.
The landscape of the conference now stretches along
the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the
nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1),
Philadelphia (4), Boston (5), Washington, D.C. (8),
Atlanta (9) and Baltimore (23). The number of
television homes in the CAA market exceeds 19
million.
The CAA conducts championships in 21 sports. Male
athletes compete for championships in baseball,
basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer,
swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and
wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in
basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse,
soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track &
field and volleyball. The CAA will also begin
sponsorship of a 12-team Division I-AA football league
in the fall of 2007.
In men’s basketball, the CAA has earned a reputation
as a “giant killer” in the NCAA Tournament. Since
1981, CAA schools have posted 12 wins over higherseeded teams. In 2004-05, the conference had four
teams earn post-season berths for the first time in
league history and five teams were ranked among the
top 100 in the RPI. In women’s basketball, the CAA has
had two teams earn post-season berths for five
consecutive years. Perennial power Old Dominion,
which has won the past 14 conference titles, has
captured three national championships (1979, 1980,
1985) and reached the title game again in 1997.

Web page: www.caasports.com
The conference has also excelled in many other
sports. CAA squads have won 10 field hockey
national titles since the championship began in 1981,
which is not only more than any other conference
but represents nearly half of all titles won. In
baseball, at least two CAA teams have earned NCAA
Tournament berths for seven of the past eight
seasons. The CAA is annually ranked among the
nation’s top 10 conferences in men’s and women’s
soccer, and has traditionally sent multiple teams to
the NCAA Tournament. In 2004-05, 24 league teams
earned NCAA Tournament berths in 15 sports, with
the CAA having multiple representatives in men’s
and women’s soccer, field hockey, men’s and
women’s golf, men’s lacrosse and men’s tennis.
There were 29 CAA student-athletes who earned AllAmerica honors.
CAA member institutions are also committed to
excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic
Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s
presidents with a goal of expanding their
partnership to all aspects of university life outside of
intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs
already established are an undergraduate research
conference, coordination of study abroad programs
and granting visiting academic status to studentathletes traveling to an away contest so that they
have access to libraries, academic resource centers
and computer labs.
In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions
were awarded academia’s most coveted distinction –
the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in
the Department of Chemistry at Virginia
Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize
for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of
economics and law at George Mason University,
shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences.
Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the
CAA since its inception. Core members George
Mason University, James Madison University, the
University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Old
Dominion University, Virginia Commonwealth
University and the College of William & Mary were
joined by the University of Delaware, Drexel
University, Hofstra University and Towson University
in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern
University became members of the conference on July
1, 2005.
The CAA traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its
current members- George Mason, James Madison, and
William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina
University, the United States Naval Academy and the
University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC
South). During the next two years, the league added 11
sports, acquired two new members (UNC Wilmington
and American University) and decided to form a new
association. The transformation from ECAC South to
CAA took place on June 6, 1985. By the fall of 1986,
the league gained automatic bids to NCAA
Championships in men’s basketball, soccer, baseball
and women’s basketball and formed an officials’
bureau. Old Dominion became a member of the CAA
in 1991-92 and Virginia Commonwealth University
joined the conference prior to the 1995-96 season.
From all-star athletes to Nobel Prize winning faculty,
the CAA takes great pride in producing performers
who stand out both on the playing field and in the
classroom.

Ralph Perez
(1990-1995)
Ralph Perez came to Old Dominion
University in the fall of 1990, immediately following his assignment as
assistant coach of the U.S. National
Team at the 1990 World Cup. A successful coach at both the collegiate
and international levels, Perez led
his first two Monarch teams to conference championships. He coached
14 All-Conference players, 10 All-State players, the CAA player-of-theyear and tournament MVP, and was himself honored as Colonial Athletic Association and Virginia Collegiate Coach-of-the-Year in 1991, leading the Monarchs to their best season ever, 18-2-2, and their second trip
to the NCAA Division I tournament. Perez left Old Dominion in March,
1996, to become assistant coach of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars
of the MLS. He is now an Assistant Coach with the L.A. Galaxy.
