Dear Student
International Mother Earth Day is 22 April, 2014. It is
a day to remember our collective responsibility to promote
harmony with nature at a time when our planet is under
threat from climate change, unsustainable exploitation of
natural resources and other man-made problems. What do
you think is the greatest problem our planet faces and
what we can do about it?
Personally, I believe recycling is the greatest problem planet faces. This is because recycling is one
of the best, important and easiest ways to save the planet and only a small percent of the world
recycles.
Firstly, today recycling, keeping our sustainability and taking care of our planet is a big
thing. While the best is to reuse our wastes, this often cannot be done. Therefore, the only way to
go seems to recycle, to use the same materials to make the same product again and again. While
this seems to be a great idea, it is not always used.
Next, recycling offers important things for the right management of our planet. It reduces
consumption of raw materials and energy use, therefore greenhouse gas emissions. What’s more,
many products can be recyclable, from medical devices to batteries.
To sum up, recycling is an important way to save the planet and it must be respected for
the good of the sustainability.

Recycling is a process to change materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful
materials, to reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, to reduce energy usage, air and water
pollution by reducing the need for “conventional” waste disposal and lower greenhouse gas emissions
as compared to plastic consumption.
Recycling is a key component of the “reduce, reuse and recycle waste” hierarchy. Recyclable
materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles and electronics. Although similar
in effect, the composting of other reuse of biodegradable waste is considered recycling.
Materials to be recycled are either brought to a collection center or picked up from
the garbage, from sorted, cleaned and reprocessed into new materials bound for manufacturing.

Nowadays, we face many ecological problems. Firstly, water lack and pollution. The water is the most
important ingredient for life. It is necessary for any organism, for the production of products, for fabric
and it has much more uses. We have to use correctly the natural underground sources of water.
We must control wisely the natural sources and protect from pollution the rivers, the lakes, the seas
and the oceans.
Another very important problem that the whole planet faces is the climate changes and the
pollution of the air. The high level of temperature and the liberation of gas named “greenhouse effect”.
The highest risk areas are the big cities because there are many cars, buses and factories. These effects
influence the health of people creating problems
as respiratory, cardiovascular problems, cancer
of lungs and allergies.
All people can help to save our planet
by changing our dairy habits.
Name: Dimitris Katsiavrias SF4
One of the greatest problems of our planet
is climate change. The first step is admitting that
we have a problem.
Many and varied solutions to climate
change have been proposed, including individual
frugality, energy conversation measures, renewable
energy and carbon sequestration.
In my opinion, the starting point in trying to reduce
emissions is changing the way we produce and use
energy.
Also, each of us can make a difference.
For example, we can take care of our trash like
recycling paper and bottles and take public
transport, bike or walk.

Our planet has a lot of problems (natural and man-made problems.) I think that the greatest problem
is the threat from climate change.
I think so, because during the last 50 years, the climate has changed seriously. It seems that
if we don’t stop “killing” our mother earth by pollution, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources
and other man-made problems, the climate changes will go on.
So, the humanity has to take care about the protection of the earth. It means that all the people
must try to keep down the earth’s pollution. A good idea is to recycle materials like plastic, metal, glass,
paper. Another idea is to reduce the polluted emissions in the air, in the ground and at the water systems
from different sources; factories, cars, trains, airplanes, motorbikes and ships. Also, we have to protect
the forests from fires and from cutting off the trees.
I think that if the young people learn about these problems, maybe in the future, we’ll face
the climate changes!!!

Nature is our life! We, humans, instead of trying to protect it, we still create more problems.
One of nature’s major problems is the water deficiency. Not all countries in the world
have access in clean water but also the drought impacts the flora of the earth. Daily, more
than two thousand people die because they don’t have water to drink from this we try to save
as much as possible. The bottom line is that the future of nature is in our hands, and only we
and our actions can save the environment. We must protect and respect nature so that we will
leave a nice environment for the children of the world.
Name: Helen Kaiafa SF4
As we know, our planet is under thread from a lot of problems for which we are responsible.
We know it but we don’t protect it. On the contrary, we do “everything” to destroy it
and ourselves.
Some of these problems are climate change, unsustainable exploitation of natural
resources and the increase of the global temperature. But the greatest problem
of our planet is the air pollution.
The air pollution causes a lot of damage to humanity. This happens because the
90% of all people use cars even for small destinations. I am sure that they don’t care for
the planet and they believe that this is untrue. But it is a reality. We must realize that we are
responsible for the quality of our environment in which we live and work. If we want to live in
a better world we must change our way of living. First of all, we shouldn’t use cars for small
destinations. Instead we can use bicycle or we can go on foot. If you don’t want to use
bicycle or go on foot you can take public transport which are friendly to the environment.
The solution is on our hands. We should choose in which world we want to live; in a dark
world or in a smiling world?

Nowadays, our planet faces lots of environmental problems. Personally, I think
that clearing forests is one of the greatest problems.
Forests are cleared all around the world for a number of reasons,
including harvesting of timber to produce wood and paper products, clearing
land for farms and cattle ranching etc.
Deforestation is a real environmental threat. Trees are being cut down too
quickly for Earth to regenerate new forests. People that cut down trees, don’t
know what they are causing to humanity and, in my opinion, they should be
hardly punished. Cutting down trees causes floods, droughts, species extinction and many more.
Fortunately, there are things that everyone of us can do. Planting trees
is an easy way to help. Another thing we can do is to recycle products like paper so that we prevent new trees from being cut down. By recycling and buying
products with recycles materials whenever we can, we’re protecting forests.
With these easy steps we can protect our forests.
Name: Loris Moraiti MI6
I think that we are the greatest problem of our planet, because the majority of the problems are caused
by humans.
People keep polluting the environment with many and different ways such as air, water and light
pollution. The point is that people know what the results will be and they don’t do anything about it!
They don’t realize that by destroying the environment they destroy themselves! Environment gives us
anything we need to survive and not only that, so why do people don’t care about it? Well, that’s a good
question!
Anyway, I think that the answer to all of the problems is right in front of us. Care, protection and
brain; that’s all we need. If we do that, stop thinking only of ourselves, and try to save the planet, we will
survive much longer.

Environment is our huge home, so if we protect it, we protect our house. In my opinion, the greatest
problem that our planet faces is the extreme production of electric power. Factories, that make
electricity, pollute the environment and use too much lignite.
Governments must help the production of electricity by using of hydro-power and solar power,
which are eco-friendly.
In addition, each one of us can do something. Turning off the light when you’re not in the room
is a very simple and easy way to save the environment. Turning down the heating and wearing a jumper
in the winter is also a good idea. You should put solar panels on the roof of your house. Don’t leave
the TV and the stereo on stand-by. Change the common lamp into economy lamps. You shouldn’t leave
the chargers plugged when you don’t need them.
These advices will definitely save the planet.

Two hundred thousand years ago, forests were almost everywhere,
there were millions of types of plants and animals. Of course, they
ate each other, but when some types, like dinosaurs, died out,
stronger animals appeared. This is called the circle of life.
But then a horrible virus appeared which killed thousands
of types of animals and plants, destroyed habitat in many places.
It is called Humanity.
If this virus doesn’t stop killing everyone and destroying
everything, it will stay alone on the Earth. And then it will die out…
There are people trying to save the Environment,
like people who organized the Earth project, but it is not enough,
because they are too few, and people who are destroying
everything around them and they are too many.
Don’t be too pessimistic to think that everyone will die
but also don’t be too optimistic - nothing will become better
on its own.
Name: Manusevich Danil MI6
In my opinion, one of the greatest problems of our planet in our days
is the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources. Humans destroy
planet with many different ways and with great speed. The ecosystem
of Amazon is being destroyed extremely quickly, it is said that every
minute forest looses a piece of trees as a football stadium.
If Amazon rainforest is destroyed, we’ll have problems
with the climate changes and the biodiversity will be disappeared.
The exploitation of the seas after some years will cause
the disappearance of the fishes.
Human beings mustn’t be so greedy and they have
to exist peacefully with others and with the environment.

I think that the greatest problem of our planet is the waste
of water. Every day we waste a lot of liters of water and other
countries like Africa and Pakistan cry for water. Many parts
of California and Australia have already started to have drought.
What can we do?
What can we do to waste less water?
• Instead of using the water hose, use a bucket of water and
a sponge to clean the car.
• See a water leak you can’t fix? Tell your parents or call a handyman.
• Water the plants in the morning when the temperature is cooler.
• Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
• Take a shower instead of taking a bath.
Name: Alberto Mar Lomadilla MI6
In my opinion, there are too many problems on the planet.
Nevertheless, I think that the most important is clearing the
forests. We need paper and wood that is produced by the
trees but we still shouldn’t cut down all the trees, especially
near the towns because when it is raining, the trees keep
some of the water but when there are not any trees the
towns and the village flood. I think that we should all try to
use less paper and that we should try not to leave the companies to cut trees down.

International Mother Earth Day is 22 April 2014. It is a special day when
people aware each other to save the planet Earth, which is threatened
by climate changes, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources and
other man-made problems. But personally, I think the overpopulation
is the biggest threat for Mother Earth. This also causes other problems.
These problems are:
1. Not having enough space to live and for this reason cutting
down trees to build buildings. Like this, many animals
lose their home.
2. The pollution is caused by the overpopulation. All the people
excel carbon dioxide and there aren’t enough trees
to cover it.
3. The natural disasters are caused from climate change and
the climate change from the air pollution. But air pollution
is caused by overpopulation.
But fortunately, there are ways to prevent these problems:
1. Scientists are trying to find out ways to live in outer space,
on other planets.
2. We, people, must plant a lot of trees. We must make
the Earth “GREEN’.
We must make the Earth better than before.
I believe that everything can happen if you believe in it.

The greatest problem in Earth is the sea pollution. Many oil
tankers hit in the rocks and crashed. All the oil is poured
into the sea. Hundreds of fishes are dead. It is difficult to
“clean” the sea from the oil. The sea pollution is a huge
problem. Also in Mexico the mining oil was a disaster. For
two months, oil was coming up from the bottom of the sea.
That was a huge amount of oil. The oil kills the fishes and
pollutes the sea. Now we haven’t got a lot of sea pollution.
But we have to protect Earth. So, the captains of oil tankers
must be more careful and not hit in the rocks, because we
all have to fight for a nicer, green planet.

Nowadays, our planet faces a lot of problems such as sea pollution, pollution with radioactive materials
etc. But the most important problem, I think, is the air pollution because air is the most important thing
in our lives, since without it we all die!In fact, with air pollution, we destroy ourselves!
And how is air pollution created? We (people) create it! Daily, cars, buses, factories etc. send out
tones of dangerous gases that go out in the air and, as an effect, we breathe them. In fact, many people
die because of it! But this kind of pollution doesn’t have effects only in humans but in animals too!
To stop it, I personally think that we have to use instead of buses other kinds of means of transport
such as metro, trolley buses etc. which are more ecological and environmental friendly.
Name: Chris Tzemis MI5
I think that the greatest problem our planet faces is the climate change because the ices of north and south poles are starting to melt and slowly seas
and oceans are going to flood. The only thing we can do is to close up all the
useless machines so that we don’t waste energy.

During the last years humans started destroying the Earth, their own house! They caused many
natural problems including the air pollution, the climate change and unsustainable exploitation
of natural resources.
In my opinion, the greatest problem our planet faces is the environmental pollution. People
throw their rubbish on the ground because they are indifferent and they don’t care about keeping
public places clean.
Moreover, farmers use fertilizers and chemicals in order to make their products look delicious,
so that people want to buy them. And they don’t realize they destroy the arable land and even more
they cause serious health problems to the consumers.
In addition, people today want more and more staff and buy more and more products
they don’t actually need. Therefore, companies and factories are getting bigger and they pollute
the atmosphere, sea water and soil with dangerous gazes and chemicals.
If we really want to ensure our future on this planet, we must cut down on our bad behaviour
because the Earth transmits a message of despair and we should always be aware and prepared to
make the essential changes. Politicians should oblige people, farmers and factories to take the right
measures to protect the environment from being harassed and constantly in danger.

Dear Student
March 21st is the International Day for the Elimination
of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. March 21st
commemorates the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa
in 1969 and provides an opportunity for people throughout
the world to take action against racism. We invite you
to express your thoughts about racism. Open your
minds- speak out against racism.
Some people claim that racism is a required perception nowadays. I am writing this essay to inform
people about racism and to support those who are against it.
Racism is thought to be a necessary position by one group of people against another from
different country or religion or even different color of skin. There are two different kinds of racism, the
tribal racism and the social racism. As it concerns the tribal racism, the superior tribes look down on
the others and this leads to the phenomenon of racism. On the other hand, the social racism usually
involves drug addicts, unmarried mothers or unemployed people.
What I support is that all the people or at least the majority of every society should turn
against this phenomenon. Currently, folks and peers need to realize that every single one of them has
its own and precious value, which nobody can take away from them. People are valuable no matter
what their colour skin is.

Racism is a state in which a person shows disrespect and feels inferior to a person of different nationality,
language and sometimes skin colour. In the following text, I will be referring to some of the causes of racism
these days and also I will be underlying the ways that we can contribute in order to make racism to vanish
completely from our world.
As it is commonly known, racism is becoming increasingly popular these days. Part of this is because
of the economic crisis, moral crisis I should say, which tyrannizes our world. Either we like it or not, racism
is almost everywhere in our everyday life, in schools, in our house and in sports’ activities, to name but
a few. Another factor that can contribute to racism is parents. Parents become highly aware (more aware
than normal sometimes) of their surroundings and can develop a strong racist spirit which unfortunately
is inherited to their children. Those children have a high chance of showing brutal behaviour against people
that are different, somehow, of them.
This question however remains; what we do about it? We MUST accept that not all people are the
same. We must get to terms with the fact that we shall not judge a person only by looking at its external
characteristics; the inside is only what matters.
Name: Savvas Papaevangelou SC2
I know that the World Day against Racism is observed on 21 March but I didn’t know why, until I had
been asked to express my thoughts about racism. I haven’t also heard of the Sharpeville massacre, so
because of such questions, I decided to look deeper in the issue by searching in the internet.
I found then why the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is on 21st
March. On that day, in 1969, police opened fire and killed 69 people during a peaceful demonstration
in Sharpenville, South Africa against apartheid laws. Proclaiming the day in 1969, the United Nations
General Assembly called the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of
racial discrimination. When I read about this tragedy, I got full of other “Whys”. Why such hatred for
people of different color?
Why so much dislike for a different breed? Why such aversion to the others? Why… ? Why…?
I believe that the International Day for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination
must acquire greater weight worldwide.
We have to eliminate racism and help those who face racism get rid of it. We are all strong
enough to make racism past but what is needed is will. Some are suffering from this disgusting idea
that we are all different.
No, we aren’t. We are all equal!

On 21 March 1969 in South Africa a mass execution of black protesters occurred and marked the vox
populi. This heavy blow against the international community was also the driving force of provoking
antiapartheid campaigns. In a nutshell, this devastating incident represents a turning point in the history
of apartheid. Thereupon the United Nations Security Council passed Revolution 134 condemning such
crimes and aiming the racial harmony in the region.
However ethnic discrimination has not stopped and consists of a multilateral issue which has its
roots to the transatlantic slave trade. This phenomenon bedevils humanity for centuries and has been
influenced by extremist ideologies such as Nazism. Racism is not something more than a perception which
supports the total superiority of one race against the others and aspires its eternal supremacy. Regretfully,
humanity doesn’t seem to have been exemplified from all these incidences and conduces to be a passive
watcher at the moment when the human rights are phased out. UN is the last bulwark of human rights which
fully adopts this universal idea – the idea of a better future. Keeping in mind great personalities as Nelson
Mandel and few current nations which have been sacrificed for this Ides, I truly believe that there is still
hope. A hope based an international education and not on flimsy stereotypes. In spite of the hope of this
Idea, we have also to fight and insist to its purposes. I hope that all people will support the UN missions with
their iron will in order to suppress and eliminate racism forever. I hope that humanity will never experience
again a second Shaperville massacre. I still hope…

When I was little, my uncle would take me to the local playground and wait for me until I got tired
and hungry. One day though, when I started playing with a little girl from Africa, he rushed at me and
forced me to go home. I didn’t understand why, back then and, to be honest, I don’t know now either.
The common excuse is that you can’t get in touch with people from places like these. The question
remains: Why?
All people are like each one of us. Color and language may differ but that doesn’t mean
we are not equal. When we are young we have no intention of putting labels on each other.
People are not born racists. They become while they are growing up, only because someone tells
them to. Fear of the difference is what societies are used to and gradually becomes the only way
people know and are capable of doing. The ugly truth is that no one actually knows why does that
fear through everyday racism is becoming more and more of a characteristic of modern life.
That is probably because of the fact that this phenomenon makes people wrongly believe that
they are more powerful than others, which eventually causes the society to hold back from
moving forward.

My personal thoughts about racism are that it is a form of bullying. When the time the white-skinned
tribe thought it was the dominant tribe in the world and the only one and they were accepting people
with paler or darker skin (only slightly) as whites, one day some travellers came across an odd looking
creature, it looked like a human, it reacted like a human but something was off about it. It had black
skin. The whites discovered that there were more of these creatures. News spread all over the world.
And the whites (seeing that their fighting technology supersedes theirs with ease and that there were
far more many whites than these “things” as they referred to them) decided to take them back to their
homelands and since they could do what any other human could, made them their slaves. As more
and more different tribes were discovered the more the white-skinned tribe look as slaves. The whites
started being hated and resented on a world wide scale. Soon wars started breaking out for slavery.
Executions took place. And now here we are, hundreds of years later after all we have been through
as mankind; here we are celebrating the International Day for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial
Discrimination.

Racism is the fobia of something that someone might believe in or even maybe his skin colour. Racism
has existed from when humans were born. It is the way of thinking that one man may be better than
someone else just because of his skin colour or belief in god. It has been the reason for hundreds of
dead people and even war. A characteristic example is the way the Nazis tried to annihilate the Jews
in the Second World War. But racism still goes on even today. Nowadays children in Greece when they
see someone black they may possible be detracted by his colour and believe that he is not as good
as the white person. In my opinion, this is the fault of our society and the school and every teacher
by himself should try and learn to kids that we are all equal and it doesn’t depend in our colour or
in what we believe in if we are good or bad. I also think this is more important if kids learn not to be
racist than to learn maths or English because it’s the way we treat other people and show that we
respect everyone the same.

Unfortunately it is human nature to be intolerant towards other groups of people and their
differences, whether they have external differences or a different religion. People are afraid
of those who are different and putting them down makes them complacent. People feel
neglected and worthless, because of the behaviour of others.
Name: Yakinthi Metzikof SF6
Bullying comes in many different forms, from cyber bulling to physical bulling. It’s all wrong and
someone must find a solution to this fast growing nowadays problem. Bullying has a real negative
effect on the victim’s life. Those who are constantly bullied can be pushed to the breaking point,
where they could end up hurting themselves or others.
One of the effects of bullying is that it can change the victim’s personality. It can cause people
who are normally confident and happy to become self-conscious, shy, and unsure. In addition, victims
of bullying may also become sad or depressed. Once a person has been bullied, they may hesitate
to participate in situations where he or she might be ridiculed, such as in public speaking or in sports.
Despite all the negative effects of bullying, there are even far more serious consequences.
There have been countless reports over the past few years of students committing suicide because
they were bullied. Meanwhile, there are times when victims see no other solution but to seek revenge
by serious acts of violence against the bully. But could something be done to resolve this issue?
There seem to be two key elements in order to stop bullying. Firstly, educating the bullies
as many of them are not aware of exactly how much they are hurting their victim. Knowing that,
may help the bullies understand better their actions against others, making them think twice
before picking on another victim. Lastly, protecting the victim as the victims should be taught that
self-defense is allowed when necessary and adults will hear them and take their concerns
very seriously.
In my opinion, there is no one single solution for bullying, but we must all keep up trying
to reduce the problem at any rate each of us can achieve and not just give up our tries at what
it seems impossible to others.
