CHICAGO AUTO SHOW 2016

WELCOME –
Governor, Mayor & Secretary of State
Greetings!
Welcome to the 2016 Chicago
Auto Show! As Governor of Illinois,
I applaud the Chicago Automobile
Trade Association and its partners
for showcasing the next generation
of innovative vehicles. Each year,
the auto show impresses thousands
of attendees and proves why it is an
important event for Chicago and the
State of Illinois.
The Chicago Auto Show has a
rich history dating back to 1901. At
that time, the Chicago Auto Show
was the first opportunity for many
Illinoisans to see an automobile.
Currently, it is the largest auto show
in North America and has been
held more times than any other
exposition on the continent.
Now, we buy cars, trucks, SUVs,
and hybrid vehicles built right
here in the Land of Lincoln. The
hardworking men and women in
the Illinois automotive industry,
laboring in cities like Chicago,
and Belvidere are the front lines of
American ingenuity and innovation.
On behalf of the people of Illinois,
I offer you my best wishes for an
enjoyable visit to the 2016 Chicago
Auto Show.
Sincerely,
Bruce Rauner
Governor
As Mayor and on behalf of the
City of Chicago, it is my pleasure
to welcome you to the 108th annual
Chicago Auto Show.
First held in 1901, the Chicago
Auto Show has become one of the
most popular auto shows in the
United States. To date, it remains
the largest automobile exhibit of
its kind in North America, bringing
thousands of people to our city each
winter. A long-standing Chicagoland
favorite, the Chicago Auto Show
provides exciting recreational
programming for all ages, accented
by unique events and informational
sessions for residents and tourists
alike.
I am proud of the enduring legacy
and success of the Chicago Auto
Show. For more than a century, it
has featured a comprehensive and
impressive display of domestic
and international passenger cars,
trucks, sport utility vehicles, and
environmentally friendly automobiles
that give all patrons the chance to
learn of trendsetting and innovative
additions to the auto industry.
I hope that those visiting our great
city take time to experience some
of the special places in Chicago.
Our iconic skyline and incredible
lakefront invite you to explore all
Chicago has to offer. I hope you have
a chance to sample our distinguished
restaurants, tour our great
universities, visit our world-class
museums, and take in our historic
neighborhoods during your stay.
I hope you enjoy the show and
submit my best wishes for much
continued success.
As Illinois Secretary of State, it
gives me great pleasure to welcome
you to the 2016 Chicago Auto Show.
This year marks the 108th edition
of the Chicago Auto Show, the
nation’s largest and longest running
automotive convention. With
more than 1 million square feet
of exhibit space, this show gives
car enthusiasts the opportunity to
explore the latest developments and
innovations in the auto industry.
Each year brings more
technological advances, inventions
and exciting new models to the
public. Attendees will have the
opportunity to learn about the
newest creations in automotive
engineering and technology, and
experience the excitement of many
new hands-on displays available for
the first time.
The Secretary of State’s Public
Services Booth is also available at
the Auto Show this year. Our onsite staff will help patrons apply
for vanity or personalized license
plates, process title applications and
disability parking placards, renew
your driver’s license or purchase
license plate renewal stickers. In
addition, staff can answer your
questions about the many programs
and services provided by our office.
Once again, welcome and enjoy
your visit to the 2016 Chicago Auto
Show!
Sincerely,
Jesse White

GREETINGS –
The 2016 Chicago Auto Show
Welcome to the 2016 Chicago Auto Show.
Inside this show guide you’ll find a map of the
show, and this year you’re going to need it. Auto
show regulars will find many exhibits in new
locations and you won’t want to miss any of
them. Better yet, download the official Chicago
Auto Show app for an interactive map of the
show and the chance to win a new Buick Encore.
Have you seen the TV ad that began running
recently for the new Ford GT? It’s the best we’ve
seen in a while that captures the excitement of
the moment you see a car for the first time at the
Chicago Auto Show.
The ad opens with a young boy riding his
bicycle to a crowd of kids. He drops his bike and
pushes through the crowd to find what’s causing
all the ruckus. It’s the all-new Ford GT and in
an instant he is mesmerized. Then the engine
growls and it startles everyone but him. He just
smiles slightly and moves even closer to the
car as the shot opens up to see the full crowd of
kids encircling the car with their bicycles strewn
haphazardly behind them.
Why’s that so fun for us to see? Well, because
we saw the same scene play out a thousand
times in person at last year’s Chicago Auto Show. You name the super car,
we had it on display in Chicago last year and there were thousands of kids
– young and old – who fell in love with them.
Technology is advancing at a torrid pace with pundits talking about
driverless cars that might be shared and not owned. Some of them look
more like kitchen appliances than they do automobiles. Don’t get us
wrong, the technology is great, and a lot of it is already in cars on the
show floor. Cars today are safer, cleaner and more efficient than ever
before, so be sure to soak it all in while you’re at the show.
But we hope you don’t forget what’s been fueling the Chicago Auto
Show for more than 100 years – the love affair with the automobile. Have
fun! We hope you enjoy the show.
Sincerely,
Colin Wickstrom, Chicago Auto Show Chairman

AMERICANS THINK SMALL –
A Crossover Revolution
By Tom Appel
Consumer Guide Automotive Publisher
After decades of market-share
dominance, the midsize sedan is
no longer America’s most popular
new-vehicle type. By a slim but
growing margin, small SUVs are
now consumers’ favorite rides; the
category accounted for more than 2
million sales in 2015.
These tiny utes provide the same comfortable upright
seating position and packaging efficiency as larger
crossovers — as well as available all-wheel drive — but
give up some passenger and cargo space in exchange for
improved fuel economy and a lower purchase price.
This new breed of smaller crossovers may prove the
perfect fit for single folks or small families, especially
those living in urban environments where parking space
is limited and close-quarters maneuverability is most
appreciated. Empty nesters may also see the appeal in
downsizing from larger, less-fuel-efficient vehicles.
Let’s look at a few of the players in this growing
segment:
Sporty Pick: Mazda CX-3 ($20,840-$27,120)
A Consumer Guide Automotive Best Buy, the newfor-2016 CX-3 is a solid pick for shoppers looking for
athletic handling
and good power.
A classy, upscalefeeling cabin adds
to this pint-sized
Mazda’s appeal.
Note, however,
that rear-seat
passenger space
trails most class rivals.
Luxury Pick: Buick Encore ($25,915-$29,200)
A class veteran, the Encore has been part of the Buick
lineup since 2013. Consider this classy subcompact if you
place a high priority on the ride quality, quietness, and
cabin appointments.
Standard 4G LTE
WiFi capability is
another plus. Encore
prices, of course, run
commensurate with
this little crossover’s
luxury intentions.
10 CHICAGO AUTO SHOW 2016
Outdoor Pick: Jeep Renegade ($18,990-$27,740)
Another Consumer Guide Best Buy pick, the Renegade
joined the Jeep lineup for 2015. Among its charms are a
surprisingly spacious cabin and huge available My Sky
sunroof. Off-road enthusiasts will want to check out the
Renegade Trailhawk, which boasts a long list of serious
trail-ready upgrades.
Honda HR-V ($20,015-$22,065)
With almost 60 cubic feet of cargo space, the newfor-2016
Honda HR-V
is among the
most functional
of these new
tiny trucks. The
handy secondrow seat not
only folds flat
to extend the cargo load floor, it can be folded up and out
of the way to clear the floor space between the rear doors.
Fuel economy is excellent, too, with front-drive models
earning a 35 mpg EPA highway rating.
Expressive Pick: Nissan Juke ($21,150-$26,140)
The polarizing Nissan Juke slots easily into the
subcompact crossover class, though it was originally
marketed as a sporty coupe alternative. Around since
2011, this provocative Nissan is among the quickest
of small crossovers, boasting a 188-horsepower
turbocharged engine mated to a CVT automatic
transmission. Frontseat occupants will
find a surprising
amount of space,
though the rear
seat is best left to
children and smaller
passengers.

BUYING GREEN –
New Automotive Environmentalism
By Ravi Baichwal
ABC7 Eyewitness News Anchor
The automotive industry is set for
dramatic change by 2020 — and at
the forefront of that change is its
approach to environmentalism. With
gas hovering at $2 per gallon and
not expected to rise much over the
next few years, the quest for green
motoring with the buying pubic is
moving beyond MPG.
Domestically, the Chevy Volt is a good place to start.
In 2010 it emerged as Detroit’s courageous attempt to
take on the challenge of e-motoring. Now it’s the 2016
Green Car of the Year, according to AutoBlog.com,
sparking an uptick in sales over the outgoing model
despite historically low gas prices. General Motors plans
to keep interest in the second-generation Volt strong with
increased availability.
In Europe, the quest for green is seen at BMW’s “i”
division — where an environmental ethos is engineered
into the BMW i3 Electric. Eventually, there will be a line
of “i” cars. The i3, first introduced in 2013, sports an
ISO certificate 14040/14044 for environmentally friendly
features including recycled dash
materials and eucalyptus interior
wood trim that ages with the car.
The safety cell of the i3 is made
out of carbon-fiber-reinforced
polymer using recycled material. By last summer, the
i3 was the most fuel efficient EPA-certified vehicle
regardless of fuel type, according to fueleconomy.gov’s
Top 10 EPA-Rated Fuel Sippers.
More Car, Less Money : The LEASE you can do!
Even though gas prices
are low right now, it doesn’t
mean that they will stay that
way forever. Indeed, federal
CAFE requirements continue to
tighten. Starting this year with 2016 models, the federal
government’s fuel-economy standards, which have sat
frozen for years, are going to increase substantially. The
average fuel economy for cars must improve from the
current 27.5 mpg, where it has been since 1990, to 37.8
mpg by 2016. The truck standard has to rise from 23.5
mpg to 28.8.
To meet these regulations, automakers are taking
a multifaceted approach – looking to increase fuel
efficiency across a wide range of engineering protocols.
Engines are getting smaller and more efficient, many
utilizing turbo and superchargers that help boost
performance while still maintaining steady-state fuel
economy. Adding ratios to transmissions also improves
engine efficiency, and many new vehicles now offer
8- and 9-speed automatic transmissions. Start/stop
systems turn off the engine at stoplights, reducing fuel
consumption in city trips. Vehicles are getting lighter,
thanks to the use of high-strength steel and aluminum.
Finally, automakers are taking advantage of active
aerodynamics to improved highway fuel consumption.
Many vehicles come with adaptive suspensions that
lower the ride height to improve economy and some even
come with active shutters that close grille openings to
smooth airflow. All told, these savings can increase the
fuel efficiency of today’s vehicles without impacting the
driving experience.
Car buyers are practical and aspirational. Even
with AAA projecting lower gas prices this year and
buyers shifting preferences toward larger vehicles, an
environmental appeal in a vehicle’s profile is something
to look for.

GAME CHANGERS –
5 All-New Vehicles That Impress
By Dave Boe
DriveChicago.com
While strolling this magnificent
single-floor showroom today, take
special note of these newly revamped
offerings, one or two of which just
may end up in your driveway later
this year. Enjoy the ride.
Segment innovator retools,
renames – Chrysler retires the Town
& Country ID and reintroduces
Pacifica, a name not long ago
gracing the brand’s large crossover.
This all-new 2017 front-drive
Pacifica minivan features exterior
conveniences including handsfree operating side doors and rear
hatchback. Its naturally-aspired
V-6 delivers a class-leading 287
horsepower. Inside, easy-tilt access
seating allows seamless entry to
row three while dual 10-inch, high
definition second row screens
allow internet surfing and portable
electronic connection, helping
occupy young, curious minds.
From teasing to pleasing – Lexus
goes from teasing us to pleasing
us with the production version
newly minted as the 2017 LC 500.
Toyota’s luxury division aspires
more of a performance tinge and
this flagship coupe makes the case.
This rear-drive two-door motivates
from a 5.0-liter V-8 teamed with
a 10-speed dual clutch automatic
transmission and low center of
gravity. Starting price hints at under
$100,000. The cockpit-like interior
incorporates elegant touches, but its
exterior statements which sets this
rear-wheel-drive 467 horsepower
fire-breather apart from other Lexus
siblings. Expect it to reach dealers in
about a year.
Merging versatility with comfort
– Honda’s Ridgeline dances to a
different beat, opting for a car-like
12 CHICAGO AUTO SHOW 2016
uni-body platform while bypassing the traditional bodyon-frame truck architecture, thus delivering car-like
handling. The cargo region features a dual-action, dual
hinged tailgate folding down flat or opening from the
side. A popular, lockable under-bed trunk returns in this
second-generation effort. New to the cargo region: an inbedded audio system for ultimate tailgating. Measuring
5 feet from side-to-side, it’s the segment’s widest with
5 feet 4 inches of length, easily
swallowing traditionally-sized
plywood or drywall.
Memorable name returns
– The 2017 full-size Lincoln
Continental’s smooth side panels
are sans traditional pull straps or
handles. Instead, an E-latch door
release discreetly blends within
the character line framing side
windows. Front bucket seats offer
30 adjustment tweaks for optimal
support and comfort, including
split thigh extensions which jet out
from bottom seat cushions. Rear
passengers also enjoy optional
massaging and reclining seats. Tiny
cameras mounted on the grille,
rear deck lid and side-view mirrors
provide a 360 view of surroundings,
all fed into the center multi-function
screen. Expect 2017 Continentals in
dealer lots by the fall.
Silence is golden – The 2017
Chevrolet Bolt checks in as a pure
electric vehicle promising 200
miles of driving between plugin recharges. This represents a
significant driving range boost as
current mass market electric vehicles
deliver about half that estimate.
Expect pricing in the low $30,000
range after available tax-friendly
discounts/rebates. The all-electric
five-door Bolt hatchback seats five
and promises an 80 percent charge
capacity within one hour through an
available ‘Fast Charge’ system.

SECURITY BLANKETS –
Over-the-Top Safety
By Colleen Moran
Chicago Auto Show Communications Specialist
With an outstanding emphasis on
safety and innovation, automakers
have made safety features – which in
the past one could only dream about
– commonplace. Cars today are safer
than ever because of technology that
does not stop at protecting passengers
but actively avoids collisions
altogether.
Lane Keep Assist – Inevitably technology impacts how
humans function. As a result, distracted driving has been
the root of countless dangerous situations. However, cars
like the 2017 Jaguar XE are combating these situations
with Lane Keep Assist and Driver Condition technology.
This feature detects lapses in concentration and alerts the
driver by an audible and visual alert. Additionally, cars
like the Ford Fusion are equipped with an LKA system
that provides the same functions at an affordable price.
Active Blind Spot Assist – For years, consumers
and automakers have dealt with the unavoidable
inconvenience of the blindspot. Fortunately, systems like
Mercedes-Benz’s Active Blind Spot Assist have taken this
challenge by implementing a radar sensor system. The
Active Blind Spot Assist not only tracks the area around
the vehicle but can actively warn you when a vehicle is
in your blind spot. If the driver does attempt to turn, the
system will apply the brakes as a warning and safety
precaution. This feature is offered in many vehicles for as
little as $250.
Safety Comes Standard – Manufacturers are changing
the way they look at safety, now focusing on how a
More Car, Less Money : The LEASE you can do!
vehicle reacts when in an accident and trying to lessen
the chance of severe injury in the event the unavoidable
happens. For the early commuter, Drowsiness Detection
may save a life when it detects that the driver is tired
or falling asleep and alerts the driver by dabbing on the
brakes, tugging on the shoulder belt, or by an audio and
visual alert. This feature can be found along with the
pedestrian detection and braking in the Volvo CX90.
For Volvo, safety systems like City Safe, cross traffic
alert, lane keeping aid, and blind spot information are
all standard features. As a result, Volvo is introducing
the concept of effortless safety. As they put it, “It’s not
enough to simply protect, we want to prevent you from
ever being in a collision at all.”
Safety for One and All – For individuals who seek
safety but want to avoid breaking the bank, there are great
non-luxury options. One, in particular,
is Subaru’s EyeSight System. Launched
in 2012, this system protects passengers
by using adaptive cruise control, lane
departure and sideways warning, precollision braking, and pre-collision throttle
management.
As vehicles advance safety, technologies
such as the ones mentioned above evolve to
one day phase out all collisions. It becomes
evident when looking at the many safety
features offered today that consumers
do not have to choose between safe or
sorry. Rather, know that “Safety First” is
something manufacturers agree on.
CHICAGO AUTO SHOW 2016 19
BEAM ME UP –
Today’s Top Connectivity Tech
By Tim Healey
Freelance Automotive Journalist
Technology is changing how we
interact with everything in our world,
from our homes to our cars. More
than a few models on the show floor
at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show
at McCormick Place are available
with streaming Internet radio from
a service like Pandora or Stitcher,
for example. This means that audiophiles now have
more ways than ever to listen
to music in the car – no longer
are consumers limited to what
songs they have saved on their
phones.
That’s not the biggest news,
though. Over the past year,
Apple CarPlay and Android
Auto have begun to make their way into more and more
vehicles sold by major brands across the industry. These
smartphone-mirroring systems activate when an iOS- or
Android-equipped smartphone is plugged in via the USB
port, giving drivers a center-stack display that emulates
the operating system on their phone. These systems
allow for hands-free use of maps and apps (including
text messaging, streaming radio, audiobooks, podcasts,
and more), thus bringing the smartphone experience into
vehicles in a way that’s meant to not be distracting to the
business of driving.
Smartphone mirroring systems aren’t the only way
drivers can access apps. Indeed, there are apps a plenty, as
20 CHICAGO AUTO SHOW 2016
automakers offer their own incar app suites, such as Toyota’s
EnTune or Ford’s Sync AppLink
system. These systems offer
streaming radio, the ability to
search and call businesses, the
ability to search sports scores,
weather information, and other
apps that might be useful to drivers and passengers. Need
a restaurant recommendation and directions to the eatery?
These app suites can provide that, as one example.
Passengers who previously had to occupy themselves
by either talking to the driver or staring out the window,
counting out-of-state license plates, now can access in-car
4G LTE Wi-Fi in many models that you will see on the
show floor. This will let passengers watch movies or play
games without burning through their data or relying on
cell-tower coverage (the vehicle itself becomes a Wi-Fi
hotspot). As an example, more than 40 vehicles from the
four General Motors brands offer in-car 4G LTE.
In-car Wi-Fi is nice, but smartphone connectivity can
help you when you’re out of your car, too. OnStar offers
the RemoteLink app, which allows users to lock and
unlock their car, or start it remotely, or access vehicle
diagnostics, all through the app. That sort of thing can
come in handy during a tough Chicago winter. You can
even lock your car from halfway across the country if
you’re on vacation and realize that it’s sitting unlocked in
an O’Hare lot. If you have an electric vehicle, these apps
can help keep you informed of remaining range and other
functions. Other automakers offer similar apps, whether
it’s Nissan with NissanConnect, or Mercedes-Benz with
Mbrace, or Ford’s Remote Access, or countless others.
It’s a brave new world, indeed.

AUTO SHOW THRU THE YEARS –
1916, '41, '66 & '91
By M. J. Frumkin
Chicago Auto Show Historian, Curator
Throughout the 11-plus decades
since the first official show, March
23-30, 1901, visitors to the annual
Chicago extravaganza have witnessed
the evolution of motorized vehicles
from the dawning era of the horseless
carriage to the technologically
advanced 21st century vehicles on
exhibit at this, the 108th edition. Let’s look back at the
Chicago show from 100, 75, 50 and 25 years ago.
100 YEARS AGO – 16th annual CAS…
January 22-29, 1916
One hundred years ago, all the cars on display in the
Windy City were made in America. The major exhibitors
were housed in the Chicago Coliseum exposition hall
and annex on Wabash Avenue at 15th Street, while the
overflow of manufacturers and after-market firms found
space in the adjoining First Regiment Armory and Greer
Building. The Coliseum provided 58,000 square feet
of show floor, and when combined with the auxiliary
buildings, there was a total of 94,000 square feet. On
display that year were seven electric cars and 85 gasolinepowered vehicles ranging in price from $295 to $6,000.
There was a total of 300 accessory exhibits, with 48 of
them newcomers. Among the debuts were the Peerless
Miss Myra Platt smiles for the camera while putting decorative touches
on a car to be displayed at the 1916 Chicago Auto Show at the old
Coliseum exposition center, which was located between Wabash and
Michigan Avenues, and 15th and 16th Streets.

Eight, and the Pullman Coupe De Luxe, a brand touted
as the “Palace Cars of the Road.” A popular mid-priced
make was the Lexington motor car from Connersville,
Ind., powered by Lexington’s “Minute Man Six.”
75 YEARS AGO – 41st annual CAS…
October 26-November 3, 1940
With war raging overseas and apprehension of
America’s entry into the European conflict, the 1941
Chicago Auto Show was a combination of morale
booster and patriotic rally. This marked the 41st edition
of the show, and, as it turned out, the final one before
the U.S. entered World War II. There was plenty to see
in the International Amphitheatre, the new home of
the show. The Chicago Automobile Trade Association,
which has sponsored the auto show since 1935, moved
it to the Amphitheatre in late 1935 for the 36th annual
edition. With 225,000 square feet of exhibit space, and
for the first time held under one roof, the 18 vehicle
manufacturers had room to spread out to display many
additional models. All totaled, there were more than
400 vehicles on view. This included seven brands
offering the increasingly popular station wagons. A
twice daily free stage show, “Non-Stop America,” was
in the Amphitheatre’s Exhibition Ring, with seating for
12,000. The musical routines included dozens of dancers
and singers dramatizing the history of the automobile,
appearing along with the new cars driven up on the stage,
and closing the performances with rousing songs in honor

of the military and American exceptionalism. On the
show floor, there were exhibits that demonstrated fighting
equipment available to the Army, Navy and Marines
Corps. For the next nine years there were no national auto
shows. In 1950, Chicago held the first post-war show,
once again in the International Amphitheatre.
50 YEARS AGO – 58th annual CAS…
February 19-27, 1966
Beginning in 1961, the Chicago show moved from the
International Amphitheatre into the original McCormick
Place along Lake Michigan at 23rd Street. The 1966 show
would be the last in that 330,000 square foot building,
as it burned to the ground four weeks before the ’67
show. People attending the 58th annual show in 1966
saw the debut of the production Dodge Charger fastback,
which was a mid-year addition to the growing Dodge
Rebellion stable of muscle cars. Nearby, Kaiser took the
wraps off its luxurious Jeep Super Wagoneer 4-wheel
drive model, and Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new 250S. Oldsmobile drew crowds with the Toronado, billed as
the first American automobile in modern times to offer
front-wheel drive. Dream cars were now called show
cars and concepts, and in1966, included the Mercury
Comet two-seat Escapade, Ford’s Magic Cruiser twodoor hardtop that transformed into a station wagon,
and the 300x convertible from Chrysler with its front
passenger seat that rotated around to face the back seat. A
crowd favorite, the Chevrolet experimental Mako Shark
II, foretold the styling of the 1968 production Corvette.
Taking center stage in the American Motors exhibit was
the AMX concept, sporting an additional two-passenger
seating in the trunk area called a “Ramble Seat.” Across
the aisle, Studebaker, a brand name that goes back to the
beginning of the auto industry, made its last appearance
when it ceased production later that year.
A major attraction in the Dodge exhibit at the 1966 Chicago Auto Show
was the mid-year debut of the production Charger fastback two-door
hardtop, featuring concealed headlights and custom Cragar five-spoke
mag wheels.
More Car, Less Money : The LEASE you can do!
25 YEARS AGO – 83rd annual CAS…
February 9-17, 1991
In 1991, the Chicago Auto Show was staged in the
second and larger McCormick Place exposition center
along the lake front at 23rd Street. The first auto show
held there was in 1971. Exhibitors filled the 660,000
square feet of space with domestic cars on the main
level, imports and trucks on the lower level. New models
included the Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand
Marquis, Pontiac Bonneville, Oldsmobile 88, Buick
LeSabre, Buick Roadmaster and Cadillac Seville. On
the show floor, Honda celebrated its Accord as the top
selling car in the U.S. for the second consecutive year,
and added a station wagon to the Accord lineup. In
response to public demand, the growing numbers of
imports on display for the first time in Chicago were the
Toyota Paseo coupe, Infiniti M30 convertible, MercedesBenz 500E sedan, Isuzu Rodeo sport utility, the
67-horsepowerYugo Cabrio, Hyundai compact Elantra
sedan, and Mitsubishi Diamante sedan. General Motors’
answer to the imports was the new plastic bodied Saturn
coupes and sedans, built in Tennessee and advertised
with a no-haggle pricing policy. Concepts included the
Austin Rover MG E-XE, Chrysler’s futuristic 300 sedan,
Mercedes-Benz F100, Chevrolet Nomad station wagon,
Pontiac ProtoSport, Ford Zig roadster and Zag minivan,
Jeep Wagoneer 2000 multi-purpose vehicle, Chrysler
Neon prototype, Mercury Mystique minivan, Mitsubishi
HSR-II with four-wheel steering, and GMC Sagebrush
pickup truck.

THE FUTURE IS NOW –
Today's Autonomous Cars
By Jill Ciminillo
Sinclair Broadcast Group
February traditionally is one of the
worst weather months in Chicago.
It’s plagued with nasty snow and ice
storms and weather-induced traffic
jams. All this tends to make winter
driving miserable.
Well, what if you could have your
car delivered to your doorstep? Or
if you could watch a movie from the driver’s seat rather
than white-knuckling a snowy commute home? It may
seem like a pipe dream, but it isn’t.
Though industry experts disagree on the timing of selfdriving cars, one thing they do agree on is: It’s coming.
In fact, several autonomous features already exist in cars
you can buy right now. Whether fully autonomous cars
are 1 year or 10 years away, here are some features that
help make driving a little less fretful and a whole lot
safer.
Adaptive cruise control – Similar to cruise control,
adaptive cruise control lets you set the speed and forget
it. But it’s smarter than regular cruise control because
when you get behind a slower moving car, the ACC
automatically slows you down as well. When the slower
moving traffic clears, then the speed of the car increases
to the previously set limit. Some systems, like those in
the Chrysler 200 and Hyundai Genesis, are so advanced
that they can take the car to a complete stop, and then
bring it back up to speed again. How does it work? ACC
uses radar to measure traffic in front of the vehicle, and
the driver can set the preferred follow distance based on
comfort level – usually between 2 seconds and 4 seconds
of follow time behind the car in front.
Adaptive headlights – This nifty feature allows the
headlights to swivel at the same time as the steering
wheel, which gives the appearance that the light bends
around corners. Thus, rather than pointing directly
ahead at the bushes or trees as the road turns, you can
actually see what’s around the curve. Some vehicles,
such as those from Mazda and Subaru, even offer
automatic high-beam control, turning your brights on
and off automatically depending on whether there is
oncoming traffic.
Automatic emergency braking – This feature
is pretty self-explanatory. It is usually a part of an
advanced safety suite of features that tries to help
prevent a crash. Using radar, if the car senses that a
28 CHICAGO AUTO SHOW 2016
crash is imminent, it can automatically apply braking.
Often it is paired to a visible and audible warning in an
attempt to get the driver to engage. Some systems can
take the car to a complete stop without any aid from the
driver.
Autopilot – Making a bolder step toward complete
autonomous driving, some automakers are offering
autopilot systems that allow the car to drive almost
completely by itself under certain circumstances.
Mercedes-Benz, for example, currently offers a system
called Intelligent Drive that allows drivers to go handsfree for about 10 seconds, but a new system revealed
in the 2017 E-Class, called Drive Pilot, will go even
further. It purports to allow hands-free driving for longer
stretches, autonomous passing maneuvers and the ability
to park itself remotely.
Backup collision intervention – Similar to systems in
play during forward driving, backup collision intervention
pays attention to what’s behind you -- even if you don’t.
Using radar and sonar when in reverse, this system, as
seen in Infiniti vehicles, can detect anything from a car to
a child on a bike. It’ll give audible and visual alerts, and
if the driver doesn’t react, the car will apply the brakes.
Forward collision avoidance – These systems
initially were offered only on luxury vehicles, but they
are now starting to trickle down to the likes of Mazda
and Kia. They typically include a suite of features such
as automatic emergency braking and forward collision
warnings. Some are less invasive and simply include
audible and visible warnings, and others can exert
emergency interventions such as brake and steering
assists. These systems detect an imminent crash through
More Than100,000 Vehicles Just A Click Away…DriveChicago.com
the use of radar, camera or laser technology. Forward
collision avoidance may also be called a pre-crash system
or a collision mitigation system.
Forward collision warning – This feature is a part of
any forward collision avoidance system and can come
in the form of a visible or audible warning. I’ve seen
everything from a red flashing light popping up on a
heads-up display to a small alert icon on the behind-thewheel gauges. The audible alerts I’ve experienced range
from loud tornado siren-like alarms to light beeps.
Lane keep assist – These systems have varying
degrees of aggressive intervention. In its mildest form,
when a camera on the side mirror sees the car creeping
toward a lane line, the steering wheel will try to gently
nudge the car back into its lane. In its most aggressive
form it virtually steers the car for you. I’ve experimented
with the more aggressive forms on closed courses, and
I literally took my hands off the wheel while speeding
toward a sweeping curve at 55 mph. The car took the
curve and stayed smoothly in the lane. After my third
time in a row playing with the feature, a few of the cars
actually told me to put my
hands back on the wheel.
This system is both creepy
and cool. However, it should
be noted that the accuracy
of the system depends on
the clarity of lane lines.
I’ve driven some cars with
lane keep assist through
construction zones and the
cameras have mistakenly
picked up the wrong lines
and tried to steer me off the
road.
Park assist – Whenever
my sister visits me in
Chicago, she’ll double park
her car near a parking spot
on the street and wait for me
to come meet her. Then she
lets me park her car. She,
like a lot of people who live
in non-urban environments,
has never mastered the art
of parallel parking. And
now she doesn’t have to.
Ford has led the charge
with its advanced park
assist systems, which not
only parallel park a car but
also pull it out of a spot or
back it into a perpendicular
More Car, Less Money : The LEASE you can do!
space. Several automakers, such as Volvo, Chrysler and
Toyota, also include this feature in technology packages.
Rear cross-traffic alert – Busy parking lots are awash
with speeding cars and pedestrians paying more attention
to cell phones than cars backing out of spots. Rear crosstraffic alert uses a rear back-up camera combined with
radar to alert the driver of potential hazards when backing
out of a spot. Some systems issue audible-only warnings.
Others issue a visible warning on the back-up screen in
addition to the audible.
