President’s Note
Tiger Tales
August 2010
I really like living in the South but whether you were born here or
moved here, July and August are just damn hot. Julie and I have lived
in St. Louis and Memphis so we know what hot is. This is it! I want to
take a "pole" how many would like to have an outside meeting in August or in an air conditioned one at a unique restaurant for a family
gathering. Good Italian food in family style in 12 different rooms, neat
atmosphere, reasonable prices at "Buca". Bring your wheels, family,
and have some fun. See you there!
How about in September: bring your kids to this Dixie Speedway on
Hwy 92 for some dirt track action.
The GTO Club is for having fun. Participate = fun. Don't participate =
no fun. Ya'll come!

Almost Heaven
By Pam Immekus
Like the John Denver song ―Country Road” we headed off to West Virginia. Bob gave me notice at 3
P.M. on Wednesday that he wanted to leave the next morning for Charleston and the POCI convention. No hotel, no car arrangements, no spending money. I had to make arrangements for Lisa, our
daughter, to get to work, and no time to call anyone to see if they wanted to go too! Grrrrrrr…
Thanks to Price Line for a 1/2 priced hotel, we got the Marriott that was across the street from the
convention center. We got up at 4 a.m. and made the 7-1/2 hour drive across North Carolina and a
piece of Virginia into West Virginia. We parked the car and never moved it for the next four days.
There was a shopping mall and restaurants across the street from the convention center and the river
front was in walking distance, as was the swap meet held under the expressway bridges. We saw Bob
Christanell at his booth at the swap meet on Thursday.
The popular vote setting was fabulous, all the cars lined up along the Kanawha River front. We
watched a tug boat maneuver six barges full of gasoline across the river on Friday afternoon, walked
in the shade of the trees that lined the water to look at the cars, sat (I danced) in the pavilion where on
Friday and Saturday night concerts were held (Saturday was Ronnie and the Daytona‘s).
We met a guy who knew our oldest son, Mark, who had retrofitted a 1966 GTO with a natural gas
powered engine. Talk about a sacrilege! It was very well done. The owner travels around to conventions displaying the ―green‖ car (it‘s actually red).
Page 4
We hooked up with some friends we knew from past GTOAA
conventions. They were really the reason we wanted to go.
Our friend is a recent cancer survivor and we wanted to see
how he was doing. Like us, Wichita was just too far for them
to go this summer.
We saw Jim Wangers and talked with Arnie Beswick who gave
us a CD of his history to send to our son Scott in Afghanistan
and he signed the case with a personal message and wouldn‘t
let us pay for the CD. So sweet.
Bob didn‘t have to judge any cars and I didn‘t have to tabulate ballots. Not that either of us minds doing those jobs. It‘s our excuse to
go to the GTO conventions and the only vacation we get.
It was a laid back atmosphere and so pleasant. Has anyone ever seen
Bob sit down at a GTO convention?
Next year‘s POCI is in Bowling Green, KY, about a 4 hour drive
from Atlanta. Unfortunately, it‘s been scheduled for the same weekend as the GTOAA which will be held in Portland, OR.
Hmmmmmmmm….

Cool Garage Accessories
By Chuck Heastings, Legendary Garage Company
I‘m always looking for cool garage accessories. Sometimes a search
turns up something common that has been adapted or refined for use
in the garage. Did you know, for example, there are wall-mounted
vacuum cleaners with a 20-foot hose made specifically for garages?
With this, you can vacuum your car‘s interior while parked outside
the garage, or you can vacuum the far corners of your garage floor.
Don‘t you just have to have one of those?
How about the ―slatwall‖ you normally see in retail settings
for clothing displays? There‘s now a PVC version for garage
organization! You can hang a variety of hooks, shelves, baskets, and cabinets on the PVC ―slatwall‖ in the garage. It
will support heavier loads than the wooden retailer version,
and it doesn‘t have to be WHITE. There are several manufacturers of ―slatwall,‖ but very few of their accessories are
interchangeable. So, do your homework if your garage plans
call for ―slatwall.‖ Make sure the manufacturer offers the
accessories you need.
Did you know you can change the look of your garage in 30 minutes by installing a vinyl floor mat?
Check out a product called G-FLOOR. You can buy
it in different lengths and widths to custom-fit your
garage or to cover only the area where you park
your GTO. There are a number of options for covering your garage floor, but G-FLOOR is by far the
easiest way to go. My personal favorite is the coinpattern, which is the easiest to sweep, but there are
other handsome patterns and colors.
Many of us have a creeper in our garages. Some are
more useful than others, but they all basically look and
work the same. I think the exception is the ―BONE‖
creeper. Not only is it cool looking, this is the ultimate
creeper. It‘s built with the features that you were thinking of the last time you attempted to maneuver under
your car – something a little more comfortable that
rolls easier. Well, the overall shape of the BONE
creeper is that of a dog bone.
Page 6
The form-fitted area where you lie on your back is
very low to the ground; it‘s anchored in each corner
by a hump where the large wheels are located.
Those large wheels won‘t get hung up on small
stones or cracks, and that allows you to glide effortlessly under your car. The manufacturer has recently introduced a companion mechanic‘s seat, appropriately enough calling it the TAIL-BONE! It‘s
built on a base with 3 large wheels. The seat on the
TAILBONE resembles a tractor seat, big and comfortable.
There are a number of catalogs featuring automobilia – from signs to gas pumps to diecast cars.
Don‘t forget to check out garage sales, flea markets, and eBay for great garage décor. You know
that Snap-On and MAC tools have lines of garage themed clocks as well as diecast vehicles,
don‘t you? Why not tie your stash of car parts into your theme? I recently saw a garage where
one wall was absolutely covered in vintage flathead parts. Another had old hubcaps made into
clocks and wall lamps. That‘s creative! Remember, the best part is that there‘s only one you have
to please with your garage design: YOU!
Here‘s an idea: When you make your next trip to Barnes & Noble look for a magazine in the
transportation section called GARAGE STYLE MAGAZINE. This California-based publication
features residential and commercial space where owners have transformed their garages, big and
little, to reflect their automotive lifestyles. On a recent trip to California I had the privilege of
spending an afternoon with the Founder/Publisher of GSM. He wants to see some cool garages
from our region. If you think your garage would make an interesting article, send me an email
and I‘ll work with you to write it up and submit it to the publisher. Or maybe you have a home
office or game room where you keep your automobilia. Garage Style Magazine will soon be running a series of articles featuring the ‗creeping‘ of automotive décor into other parts of the house.
Know anyone whose collections are creeping into the home? Bring it on! Let‘s get some coverage for the SE GTO club in this magazine.
Whether yours is a Garage-Mahal or just your
private automotive sanctuary, if you‘d like to
show it off, contact me. I‘m always looking
for creativity and inspiration for my projects.
And likewise, if you need some inspiration, I
would welcome the opportunity to help you
visualize your dream garage. Check out my
blog at HTTP://

me at [email protected] for more
information.
