Dr Vasundhara Padmanabhan (Principal)
My dear young students,
Your role as teachers in the new millennium has become multifaceted and challenging.
Teachers are nation builders. You will need to cultivate social, moral and spiritual values
in children. Your role as facilitators for social transformation will require you to develop
in children nationalism and internationalism; prepare them to be global citizens; develop
in them self learning skills and ICT skills and develop in them high emotional and
spiritual quotient.
To play this role effectively, we at the K. J. Somaiya Comprehensive College of
Education, Training and Research strive to equip you with the appropriate knowledge,
habits, attitudes and values. You should not only develop the necessary competencies
as a teacher but also have a desire for lifelong learning and for ‗reaching the

Preparing future leaders
The heart of what we do is to prepare the brightest minds to become ―lighthouse‖
teachers—educators with powerful insights developed through an interdisciplinary
foundation. Every year with the vision and mission in mind we chalk out the goals of the
institution .We aim to serve the communities and to compete in the global economy, for
this we prepare our student teachers to face the global challenges with well equipped
skills. Research tells us that one of the most important components of student
achievement is the quality education. Thus we aimed at beginning with an innovation
required to bridge the gap between the teacher education institution and the schools
.Thus shadow teaching concept was internalize into the working of the practice teaching
concept in collaboration with R N Podar School Santacruz. This project actually
facilitated to cater to the needs of the schools. It commenced from 11th September
onwards The students were mentored by an inservice teacher to know about the
different in concepts ie Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation, Attendence , making
records of the students, using anecdotal records etc. This year with a new vision we not
only aimed to teach our students about the subject areas, but we also aimed to prepare
them to fill the gaps in the existing schools by giving them hands on experience to be an
actual class teacher but well coached to sail successfully. The shadowing concept
enabled the students to know actual functioning in the school situation.
Content Enrichment Programme
'It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.'
--Albert Einstein
Content knowledge is a must in teaching -learning process. Hence, Content test followed
by content enrichment programme was conducted for a week from 10th September
pg. 7
onwards. Our institute aims at collaborating for providing the nurturing inputs. For this teachers
field experts are invited from Junior colleges to deliver content for certain subjects Here Mr
Ravikant Sangurde shared his expertise to nurture the Commerce students. This programme was
very much beneficial to the students.
Experimenting Innovations
Shadow Teaching -an intermediate between learning and teaching
Every student enters into the B.Ed course with an intention to come out as a wellpolished and a learned teacher. Marching forward with this intension, the institute for the
first time introduced an innovation called Shadow Teaching. This programme was
organised with an association of Podar School, Santacruz from 11th September
onwards. Shadow Teaching bridges the gap between the learning process and actual
teaching in schools. In Shadow Teaching, as the word shadow says, the studentteacher follows a teacher that has been allotted to for the entire day.
The student teacher practically learn how a teacher manages everything, her style of
teaching, her method of teaching, the devices she uses as well as the evaluation
process she conducts. It also includes the understanding of the functioning of school
management. This following or Shadowing of a teacher gives a hands on experience to
a student teacher to handle the situations by themselves. It makes working in a school
much easier from day one itself. Apart from acquiring theoretical knowledge, a student
teacher also has practical experience of handling situations as a teacher yourself.
Setting an example Demo classes by the Alumni
--Nostalgic reminiscences of college days
On 7th and 10th of September, demo classes were conducted by the alumni of our
college. Demonstration was conducted on a commerce topic by Mr. Shakti Jhala of
2012-2013 batch. He focused on the different aspects of the economic environment of
India. This was followed by Ms. Aditi Agarwal who conducted the classes in both
pg. 8
English and Science. Her way of handling language lessons and relating them with the
suitable games was remarkable. The third class was highlighted on Maths by Ms.
Meghna which focused on prime numbers. The entire content was first related to the
concepts already known to the students and was well constructed to cater to the
maturity level of the class. Demonstrative class on history was effectively carried out by
Ms. Divya, who gave an interesting start to the lesson with an appropriate video.
Demonstrative class was conducted on commerce by Ms. Rajeshwari whose main
focus was on the monitoring mechanisms. The unique way of presenting the contents
through mind map was the most remarkable feature. Inculcation of the play way method
was the sole ingredient in these subjects.
Block Teaching ---An experience
Block teaching was conducted from 23rd September to 28th September to give an
overall experience of all the activities involved in functioning of a school which includes
administrative roles also. This helps the students to develop into a complete teacher.
Lesson planning workshop
Lesson planning workshop was conducted successfully by Ms Hema Peese which was
done as a team teaching activity thereby giving the students the exposure to concept of
lesson plan, content analysis, objectives and specifications, support system and
exhibition of teaching aids etc.
Evaluation workshop
Evaluation workshop was conducted by Ms Hema Peese from 7th October to 12th
October by staff members. Year planning, unit planning, blue prints, weightage table,
scoring key, answer key, question bank, achievement test were covered during the
session.

B.Ed Internship Programme
In order to get a personal feel of becoming a teacher in a real school set up, a 6-day
internship programme was organized in the respective practice teaching schools. This
helped the students to understand the real responsibility of a teacher in moulding the
lives of children. Through this programme, along with the completion of practice lessons
all the team members had to plan for a literary, creative, topic centered teaching and
even had to complete a whole chapter and conduct a unit test on the same. The path
was quite patchy and tough but the motivating words of the mentors increased the zest
for learning and provided the right direction to look into. Apart from the intensive
emotional and intellectual workout and daily hassle all the learners got the valuable
experience of taking up a responsible profession. Some learners got an opportunity to
complete the internship programme at Nareshwadi Learning Centre near Dundhalwadi,
Dahanu Taluka, about 130 km from Mumbai, where almost five hundred children from
underprivileged families are getting education and living in the campus. Some more
B.Ed learners got the privilege to complete their internship program at Sameerwadi, a
CBSE affiliated K. J. Somaiya English Medium School located in an eco-friendly, serene
and sylvan rural surroundings of Sameerwadi away from the humdrum of daily life, 8
Kms from Mahalingpur. The sprawling campus spread over an area of 5 acres is
aesthetically and imaginatively designed to meet the academic, sports and cultural
requirements of the students and staff. Particular attention has been paid to blending
buildings with the evergreen and picturesque surroundings. It is a co-educational school
with special emphasis on nurturing the vast latent human resource available in the
villages who are often denied the opportunity.
CAP Presentations
As Education demands innovation in every aspect of teaching, the use of technology
has become the sole aspect of the teaching aid. Keeping this in view, all the studentteachers gathered their expertise in creating their own computer assisted presentations
with the ultimate aim of initiating a techno driven instruction which would ensure a better
understanding of the basic concepts. Though the CAP presentations were conducted as
pg. 10
part of the syllabus, it had a more enthusiastic participation wherein everyone with or
without the basic computer education went that extra mile by generating rich and
meaningful scripts for content development in the form of a storyboard.
Science club activity
"Learning by doing" is the cardinal principle of Science. It not only intends to develop a
scientific attitude but also a deep sense of curiosity and inquiry. Traditional methods
emphasized more on lab experiments but now the modern version demands a br oader
outlook towards all the activities happening around us. With an increase in the
application of science, a deep insight into the magic and trick of science is the need of
the hour. Thus under the supervision of Ms. Sreetanuka Nath various activities were
conducted to develop a rationale outlook towards the processes approach of Science.
For this, first an exposure to the chemistry laboratory was given and then the students
were asked to perform magical tricks involving science. All the students enthusiastically
participated in the programme and conducted various activities such as the floating egg,
centre of gravity, experiments on air pressure, optical illusion, candle experiments etc.
The activities were put up in an exhibition.
Environmental club Activity
Students who participated in the environmental event conducted by the Trailblazers
Group organized an extremely interesting workshop. By first introducing the group and
its activities, they started the session by sharing their experiences and then proceeded
to the various issues relevant to the present day such as poaching, illegal fishing,
killing, hunting etc.
This was followed by a small activity wherein they invited a few students to collect water
from leaking taps across the 3rd floor and 4th floor within a span of 5min each. Then
they measured the quantity by using a measuring cylinder and concluded by presenting
the calculated amount of water wasted in a minute from a single tap. This was quite
surprising as the loss was enormous. After this the entire class proceeded to the ground
pg. 11
wherein several games on food chain and food web were played. This required the
students to take up the roles of specific animals and search and catch their prey. Last
was a small demonstration wherein the cause of soil erosion was explained with a
comparative demonstration of soil in an open ground and a pasture by using a stick with
a white paper. The workshop thereby turned out to be not only a fun filled activity but
also but also an educative process aiding in effective presentation and organization.

Cultural Activities
We at Somaiyas aim at preparing the leaders for 21st century without leaving the
cultural values. The responsibility of the future leaders would be to transmit the Indian
culture to the future entrants of the society. So year after year we give due importance
to cultural transmission through a well chalked cultural activities.
The year began with celebration of Teachers Day on 5th Sept where students & faculty
members stepped away from their regular classes to take part in a ground breaking
event including a couple of cultural activities presented by the students It consisted of a
group song in Marathi & Hindi, solo songs & a dance sequel which was a culmination of
all the major dance forms across India. The presentation on the life of Dr. S
Radhakrishnan & some great leaders like Vivekananda & Mahatma Gandhi, struck a
chord with the entire crowd. Teachers‘ day is celebrated as a tribute to the valuable
contribution made by teachers in imparting knowledge and enlightening and shaping the
career of students. For students, teachers ‗day is an occasion to pay reverence &
gratitude to teachers for their selfless effort in shaping their career & enriching the
education system in the process.
Before commencing anything auspicious Lord Ganesha comes to give his blessings
Thus after the teachers day program to lay down the foundation of a strong future of the
prospective teachers, Ashtavinayaka entered to give away the blessings to the group of
students on the eve of Ganesha Chaturthi . To mark the occasion and add festive touch,
beautiful Rangoli patterns were made on porch. Following this the Asthavinayak.
Following this, some of the students reverberated the atmosphere by singing devotional
song and making the environment livelier. After this, was an informative PowerPoint
presentation which explained the meaning of Ashtavinayak and its significance.
pg. 13
Towards the end, Principal Dr Vasundhara Padmanabhan recited a thought engaging
poem on Ganesh.
The auspicious occasion of Navaratri began from 5th October, Saturday. The Navratri
commences on the first day (pratipada) of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of
Ashwin. The festival is celebrated for nine nights once every year during the beginning
of October. Students of the class irrespective of their cultural or religious differences
enthusiastically engaged in the festivity. The occasion was celebrated with great vigor
and gusto. Devotional song was sung by groups of students on the stage. This was
followed by the teachers as well as students performing the aarti of the Goddess.
Students and teachers performed Garba dance on the last day of Navratri which was
thoroughly enjoyed by all the students and teachers alike. The day and the celebration
of the festival ended on a joyous note with each student though tired but happily left the
class.
On the 12th of October, the college celebrated Eid to drive home the fact that one
should not only preach but also practice the sanctity of Secularism. Our students
enlightened everyone about the occasion through a PPT, wherein pictures were shown
of the religious journey to the holy cities. Following the information provided, everyone
moved on to poetry mode. A group of the students sang out a Naat, which is poetry
sung in praise of the prophet. Eid celebration without sher-o-shayari would just not be
assumed complete hence session of sher-o-shayari was organised. There might be
differences in the way each one practices their religion, their beliefs but at the end we
know, all religions impart the same values and lead to one Supreme God. On this
spiritual note everyone ended the day at the college.
The month of October ended with a glorious event with Diwali celebrations. Diwali
actually signifies the victory of good over evil. People celebrating this victory indicate
that truth and goodness would always triumph. It also indicates that people would never
forget goodness and greatness over time. Deepavali also known as Diwali is one of the
festivals in India that is celebrated throughout without any bias in religion, region, cast or
pg. 14
creed. Diwali is an example of our concept of Unity in Diversity. Diwali was celebrated in
the college with pomp and fervor. At first there was goddess Saraswati Vandana and
welcome speech, this was followed by cultural and thematic dance by our students and
power point presentation on relevance of Diwali. Poster making competition on the
themes of women's safety and ecofriendly Diwali was conducted. Rejuvenating theme
based Antakshiri was conducted towards the end followed by declaration of results of
the winners.
The month of December brought Santa Claus with gifts of happiness and goodluck for
future. The Christmas celebration was an event which the students awaited after giving
their exams and it acted as a platform for bringing all of them together in a joyous mood
after a long time.
The event started by a welcome speech followed by lighting of the lamp by Dr.
Vasundhara Padmanabhan. A cultural program was organized by the students to
elucidate upon the importance of Christmas with Carol singing and dancing

Faculty Development Programs conducted
Faculty development programs were conducted under different areas like Research,
use of ICT, etc.Various field experts were invited here with an aim to develop various
skills and expertise related to the new innovations of 21st century Somaiya college of
Education, Training and Research invited Ms Prachi Dalal, a Museum Educator, an Artist and
a Dancer. She is well known for her art in India as well as abroad. She is a Dance
director at Indo- American Arts Council and is also a freelance consultant working on
cultural resources projects ranging from museum education and interpretation,
sustainable tourism development, heritage interpretation and education, preservation
of intangible heritage, and community development to promotion of arts (performing
and visual) and crafts. She gave a proficient lecture on Site Based Learning in which
she explained how a blend of narration and natural sights can foster students'
interest and enhance their understanding which would enable them in higher order
thinking and critical appreciation. She illustrated this by showing power point
presentations on the work she conducted on school children of K.J. Somaiya English
Medium School, Sameerwadi, Bhagalkot.
A highly interactive workshop on "Thinking Skills for Exceptional Learners: Gifted &
Slow learners" &"Integrating Thinking Skills in the Curriculum" was conducted on
7.01.2014 for prospective teachers & student-teachers of the institution and others
too. It was a privileged experience to have Miss. Vidushi Chaudhry as the guest
speaker for the day. Miss Vidushi Chaudhry is a special educator and public speaker,
specializing in working with children struggling with reading, writing, language and
learning difficulties. She has been working with struggling learners for the last six
years, in both Mumbai and Delhi. She envisages a world where individual learning
pg. 31
differences are celebrated and all schools have resource rooms to meet the needs of
struggling learners. She is committed to spreading awareness about learning
differences amongst educators, parents and policy makers and becoming an
advocate and a spokesperson for learning disabilities. All the topics ranging from the
current trends to the learning outcomes were discussed through the use of
appropriate analogies. She emphasized on the various thinking strategies and great
thinkers too.
The consecutive programme was conducted by Mrs. Usha Pandit from who is the
author of the textbook series "Empowering English" from grade 3 to 8 and a one-ofits-kind writing resource book titled "Writing with Ease", that have been acclaimed by
educators and teachers as unique and effective. Mrs. Usha Pandit is an educational
consultant, specializing in curriculum development, gifted education and the
academic and administrative management of educational organizations. She has had
over twenty years of teaching experience in four countries. She brings to consulting a
deep understanding of the educational needs of students from a range of cultures
and age groups. The entire day was divided into two parts wherein a mini lesson
planning workshop was organized with focus on all the mandatories and
requirements on planning & executing an effective lesson plan. She had an
exceptional quality of not only capturing the attention of every participant, but also in
the use of the finest vocabulary. Her simpler way of representing the herculean tasks
aided in emancipating the prospective teachers from the cloud of introspection to the
light of uniqueness of every single child. It was very fruitful as the second half was
utilized in another important aspect of the teaching process, i.e.; preparation of the
question paper.
Workshop on Blended learning was conducted on 18th January 2014 by Miss Soma
Bajpai from Zaya Foundation . She introduced the concept of blended learning to the
present scenario. Her confident way of presenting and interacting with the students
made the session more of a practical utility rather than a mere lecture. Blended
learning which encompasses a hybrid learning atmosphere by the inclusion of classroom teaching with the online instruction aims at providing a collaborative learning
experience to the students. There were a few discussions and a flow of free opinion
pg. 32
wherein students and teachers participated with great zest. This was followed by the
presentation on Zaya Model which was highly appreciated.

Empowering future leaders with counselling skills Ms.Sweta Padmanabhan
Guest lecture by Miss Sweta Padmanabhan was organized on the 25th December,
2013 to facilitate the understanding of counselling & basic work etiquettes. She is a
practising counsellor at a clinic in Chembur and was at great ease handling all the
queries of the students. She concentrated on the most important topics such as
counselling, anger management, work place harassment and improving teaching
methodology which are of great relevance at this juncture, where mere theories and
training do not help. The session was extremely valuable for the students as they are
novices in the field of teaching & handling stress. All the misconceptions regarding
counselling were cleared & it proved to be an interactive event. She not only
emphasised on various problems prevalent in the work place but also the efficient
ways to tackle them, so as to prevent any kind of problem arising from the same.
Meanwhile she also gave insights on the ways of handling the temper tantrums, which
can act as the barrier in the professional development of teachers. She concluded
her speech by discussing various current issues followed by a question and answer
session.

contributed to our knowledge of History, through his unique blend of knowledge of
Psychology and History; he elucidated on how History is created, taught and
learned. Through his profound lecture he tried to bridge a gap between sacred and
secular History by giving real life examples ranging from day to day life to religion to
science. His humour, easy language and childlike gestures made the lecture lively.
Though being a history lecture all were glued to their seats and listening attentively;
enjoying every word of it.
Upgrading skills related to Psychological testing
As the M Ed students needed to be empowered with the skills of administering the
different psychological tests for doing research, a session on administration of latest
psychological tests was conducted. Ms Rupal Thakkar & Ms Usha Sharma
conducted a session where the students were shown the list of psychological tests so
as to create an awareness of different categories of tools - inventories, scales, battery's
etc. A few of the latest tests were actually administered on the students which

followed scoring and interpretation of results.the session was beneficial as the
students could use the same tools in further researches
Session on Quality Management in Higher Education: Some Practical
Tips
In order to develop an understanding of the need for quality in the educational
system, a guest lecture by Dr. G. N. M. Dixit, chief mentor and director of SMS
Foundation was organized for the teachers and aspiring teachers of the K.J. Somaiya
Comprehensive College Of Education, Training And Research. His speech initially
focused on the quality in education of different countries like France, Korea etc. and
then proceeded to the explanation of the Kolb's cycle. He also stressed on the
important topics like social connectivity and cooperative learning. Even the different
learning styles were emphasized on and the ways to accommodate the same were
clearly explained.
Programme on Sustainable development
The environmental studies took a giant leap towards technology with the introduction
of the concept of blended learning. This required the students to attend the online
classes from their comfort space at home from 8:30pm -9:30 pm and complete
worksheets, assignments and interactive activities at college. The online learning
through WizIQ provided a new platform to teach and learn a particular subject. The
chat option available at the online learning platform paved way to easy clearance of
all the doubts. As this programme was conducted as part of a research activity, it
required a pre-test and a post-test. The programme was conducted by Ms. Kruttika
Bhatt, Ph. D aspirant of this institute.

Quality Round up
As had been the culture of this institution to continually improve upon the quality of
output, IQAC meeting was organized on 22nd October where Dr Satish Ailawade
(Director, K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research) showed us
the light for further quality enhancement keeping in mind institutional vision/mission.
The session enabled to come out with a revised vision and mission of the institution.
For Grant of academic autonomy
A committee comprising of five members from various prestigious institutions visited
the college on 24th Dec, 2013. The objective was to review the effective functioning
and infrastructure availability, so as to grant academic autonomy to the institution.
The committee interacted with the staff members to gauge the preparedness towards
attainment of academic autonomy. An interactive session was held with the students
wherein the need & importance of granting autonomy was discussed. It was an
informal interaction where all the students were free to express their views and
opinions. It was a highly appreciated effort on part of the committee members to have
maintained such a composed nature which not only facilitated a stress free
discussion but also paved way for many new viewpoints regarding the grant of
autonomy.

would remain afresh for long. The Chairperson of the inaugural function was the Honorary
Secretary of Somaiya Vidyavihar, Shri V Ranganathan. He expounded the fact that
education needs to be practical and life based. He further added that Holistic Education must
nourish all the three domains: cognitive, affective and psychomotor and strengthen the
learner‘s emotional integrity. Apart from this Ms Kavita Anand,Director, Adhyayan Quality
Education Services Pvt Ltd., conducted an interactive discourse on the use of Twitter, a
social networking site, and how it could revolutionize the quality, reach, depth and pace of
education. Some of the eminent speakers included Dr Vijayam Ravi as the chief guest and
the key note speaker of the day Dr Chitra Natarajan Professor and Dean, Faculty of Science
Education at HBCSE as the ‗Guest of Honour‘ for the day. Keeping in mind under different
sub themes different speakers were invited & they included Dr Sybil Thomas (Principal, St
Xavier‘s institute of Education), Ms. Elizabeth Mehta (founder director, Muktaangan), Ms.
Parveen Shaikh (Head, primary section, Somaiya School, Ms. Vidushi Chaudhary (Founder,
Mind springs enrichment center). It was suggested that there was a need for creative
strategies to be used in classrooms along with an intensive on field training of the teachers to
bridge the disconnect between teacher education and the school requirements. Not only this
it was suggested that teacher education and the school had to be integrated. Apart from this
performance mastery, competition with self, generative and graduate exercise etc. should be
our aim as it would result in humanized individuals. Overall the seminar was a fruitful one as
it addressed the gathering on the issues pertaining to the system of Education.
