Rolling and Tumbling...It Rocks
Submitted by Mr. Bennink
I remember when
I told my students that
we were going to tumble
some
rocks. One
student
said, “I can
throw
rocks real
good and
sometimes they do tumble. And I can skip them
in water too!” Well, I re-
phrased that and said we
are going to polish a few
rocks with a rock tumbler.
The students liked that
idea. However, their enthusiasm waned a bit
when I mentioned that the
process would take over a
month. This project was
a success and we now
have over a dozen shiny
pebbles, ready to be
made
into jewelry or
just to
pull it out
of the
drawer or
pants pocket, just to feel
the cool smoothness and
see the light play on the
surface.
Zebras, Hippos and Giraffes...Oh My!
The K-2
students in the
after school program started a
new theme this
winter. The students have been exploring
animals.
The K-2 Discovery
Club students have read stories about baby animals from
all over the world. They
have also learned about
natural habitats and camouflage.
Each student got to
Create their own, imaginary
animal using supplies such as
feathers and multi-colored
animal print paper.
It was fantastic to see everyone using their imagination!
Most of the students came
up with creative names for
their animals such as
“Turtleafferocerous”.
As part of this unit,
the students will be exploring the island as a natural
habitat. They will be traveling to the Pony Pens and the
Nature Trail to observe and
explore the creatures on our
island.
Also, students will
be learning about marine
life, the rainforest, the
tundra and lots more!

Healthy Living: In the Classroom and on the Court
Jason Wells has
continued to positively
influence students’
lives during the 21st
CCLC after school program as a tutor and an
enrichment leader.
Jason’s Restaurant, home base for the
Cooking Club, will be
closed until February.
This has not deterred
Jason from continuing
to demonstrate healthy
living to the students
through “Health and
Fitness Club”. Jason
works with all of the
students in the after

kindergarten through
eighth grade.
Jason has been flexible
and creative with his
enrichment choices.
Whether it is on
the playground, in the
multipurpose room,
the gym or in the classroom, Jason is always
encouraging students
to do their best.
Healthy living means a
healthy body and a
healthy mind.
Students have
been to the Nature
Trail (and were even
able to play flashlight
tag!). Different sports
such as basketball,
volleyball and football
have been targeted, as
well as obstacle
courses and group
When Jason’s
Restaurant reopens,
Cooking Club will
resume. Students in
3rd-8th grade will have
an opportunity to
attend Cooking Club to
learn how to cook
healthy, fun dishes.
The students
continue to enjoy their
time practicing a
healthy lifestyle with

Broadening Musical Horizons
Submitted by Lou Castro
“Everybody seems to be into a
lot of different styles of music,
not just one kind of music and
not just from one time peiod
Mila’s tune. Mila also likes a lot of
good rockin stuff. Brandt and
Ethan were singing All I Want for
Christmas is a Real Good Tan.
Everybody seems to be
into a lot of different styles of music, not just one kind of music and
not just from one time peiod or
language or culture or country – all
kinds of music. I think this is a
or language or culture or
country – all kinds of music…”
-Lou Castro
November and December in Music, we’ve been working on Christmas songs! Emily,
Vanessa, Taylor and sometimes
Kenzie had been working on
Mistletoe by Justin Beiber, All I
Want for Christmas is You, and
songs for their school Christmas
program. Lately, in January, they
have been singing new songs like
I Knew You Were Trouble and
We Are Never Ever Getting Back
Together, from the album Red
by Taylor Swift and other songs
by Taylor Swift such as Tear
Drops on My Guitar. Daniela is
still practicing guitar, she was
working on Las Cartas Sobre La
Mesa in November and December as well as Santa Claus is
Coming to Town, Frosty the
Snow Man, Jingle Bells, (I’m a)
Goofy Goober (Sponge Bob’s
version of I Wanna Rock) and
lately Escape (the Pina Colada
song). Ingrid was singing Song
for You. Jingle Bell Rock was
great thing. I hear a lot of good
music that these students are getting from their parents.
One time in music club the
girls decided to listen to their
mom’s favorite songs! This was
not my idea, it was really something special which they did spontaneously! Please keep sharing
your favorite music as a family (in
the car, etc) and really try to listen
to each other’s music with an open
ear and mind. It’s not a bad idea to
be aware of what your kids are listening to. I love metal and hard
rock but there are songs that are
not appropriate for all ages and
they are not appropriate for
school either. I try to listen and
see (if there are lyrics available) if
all the songs are ok for school. If
not we look for the “clean” or
edited versions. All the guys have
been playing a lot of drums and
singing and dancing to – you
guessed it – Gangnam Style! During the election it was Mitt Romney Style and in January it’s Mine
Craft Style!!!!
Some new Christmas
songs (for me) popped up like
Rap Christmas, Shake Santa
Shake and Rascall Flatts beautiful
arrangement of I’ll Be Home for
Christmas. Other popular songs
are Whistle Baby, Starships, Good
Feeling, Black and Yellow, anything by One Direction – like
What Makes You Beautiful, One
Thing. Recently some people
where asking about the steel guitar (Sponge Bob guitar), I’ll be
bringing it back. (Here is a photo
of Kolai playing it with a broken
arm from a long time ago)
Wyatt has been playing guitar
and has tried the alto sax
(photo)! Daniela, Brandt and
Edwin have also tried the alto
sax. Edwin had been playing the
sax regularly in November and
December!
Julian has been playing
drums and guitar on stuff like
Seven Nation Army. Jackson has
been singing stuff like I’m Glad
You Came, these guys know great
rock music. I am a Rock n Roller
but I like ALL STYLES , TYPES,
KINDS AND GENRES OF MUSIC!
You can learn from it all!!
Club Highlights
Cheer Club
Cheer Club has had an exciting
season so far. There are 19 members
this year, 15 girls and 4 boys.
The members of Cheer Club have
brought a lot of excitement to the
basketball games, especially at half
time! The students have worked very
hard at practice to learn new cheers.
Also, a big WELCOME BACK to Cheer
Coach Mrs. Emilie Mason and congratulations on the birth of baby Dallas!
Please come to the games to root on
your favorite cheerleaders! The cheerleaders will be cheering at the Varsity
game against Columbia on Friday,
January 11 at 5:30pm and 7:00pm!
Robotics Club
Robotics Club
members continue to
build upon their skills to
master the Lego Mindstorm Bots. With the help
of Mr. Terry Burns and Mrs. Leslie
Lanier, the students have developed a
daily routine. The first step this year
was sorting. The students have
learned to compartmentalize the
many, many components of the Lego
set. They are working on long term
projects at this point, where they add
parts in phases and continue where
they left off, rather than disassembling
at the end of the day.
