I want to begin with a heartfelt thank you to all of you for your wonderful service to the CBAA during my two year term as your President. It has been my great honor to work with you, in particular, with our great Board. I am happy to have so many friends in the CBAA. It is a terrific organization, and it has been a pleasure to be a part of what we do in the community. We recently paused, as a nation, to recognize and celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This great, wise man taught us many things. Among them, Dr. King told us, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Few of us live only for ourselves. We find reward in doing for our children, our spouses, our parents, our other family members, our friends, and those less fortunate than us. We do for others. That is certainly the way of the CBAA. We take an abstract concept, justice, and make it real. We support programs that teach children about our justice system. We can’t fix all of the problems, but we can do our part by supporting education and community service for law-related activities. I am so proud of the CBAA for what we do for others. We follow a long legacy, of 55 years, of doing for others. And what we do for others has to do with basic rights that all of us cherish as Americans, of freedom, justice, and liberty. continued on page 2 The Syllabus UPCOMING EVENTS February 19, 2015 11:30 a.m. Lunch provided No Ordinary Cook Michele Kusma Home of Margaret Thiebert 62 S. FALL PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Last fall we were able to “Celebrate Columbus” in three different ways! In September we had a great group to tour the full-size prefabricated Lustron home that was built inside the Ohio Historical Center. The house was invented to provide affordable housing for returning WWII veterans. The house was completely accessorized with all the items & detail a home would have in the 1950’s. Many members and guests enjoyed reminiscing over so many of the products that were displayed in the home. After the tour everyone enjoyed a box lunch in an OHC conference room. October took us to the Wexner Center for the Arts to view the unbelievable art collection belonging to the Wexner family. The museum docents educated our 2 large groups on all the details and background of the exhibit. It was an amazing variety of interesting pieces including Picasso and Jean Dubuffet. We then enjoyed a unique lunch at La Vash Café, a Mediterranean restaurant in Clintonville. continued on page 2 President’s Message (Continued from page 1) We take our work seriously, and are able to do that work in a fun way, with great friends and good times. I’ll conclude my column with another inspirational quote. This one is by John Wesley: “Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.” Thank you, all of you, for doing for others, and for doing all the good you can. Sharon Chappelear, President Fall Program Highlights (Continued from page 1) In continuing with our “Celebrate Columbus” theme, author, Andrew Welsh-Huggins spoke to us on his 1st novel, Fourth Down and Out, at our November annual author’s luncheon. The book takes place in Columbus and highlights many places and events that happen here. He shared with us many tidbits in the book with the main character being a former OSU quarterback. He sparked a large interest in his book and many members & guests were able to purchase signed copies from Andrew. We once again enjoyed a delicious lunch served by our social committee to make it a delightful afternoon for all in attendance. Spring Program Preview We hope you can attend our program in February, when we welcome Michele Kusma, no ordinary cook, to our general meeting. She will share some great cooking stories with us about inventing luscious recipes for her family and friends, and prizes she has won. Please join us to hear Michele discuss her experiences as a finalist in the Manichevitz Cookoff Contest, the Pillsbury Bake-off and the Dole California Cook-off. She will compete again this year in the Pillsbury Bake-off for the 1 million dollar prize. Lunch will be provided by the Social Committee and Michelle will bring samples of some of her prize-winning recipes. CBAA Hands On Group As you have probably noticed from fall emails, the New Activities & Membership Drive Committee is being recognized as the CBAA Hands On Group. This past fall they have been busy in creating and organizing activities in arts and volunteer work to help attract old and new members. Hands On had much success with the events they picked for the fall. In October they sponsored a painting class at the pARTy studio. The class quickly filled up and all participants enjoyed their time creating a painting masterpiece! November’s activity was a class at the Franklin Park Conservatory in “Get Over Your Pie Phobia” It was a well attended affair with instruction on making the perfect apple pie in time for Thanksgiving. In December several members in the group signed up to be “Christmas Angels” to needy children through the Salvation Army. Many children benefited with donations & gifts for Christmas from our generous members. What better way to end our year of “Celebrate Columbus” with a visit to the reprised Chintz Room formally located in the downtown Lazarus Department Store. If you grew up in Columbus, you may have fond memories of the celery dressing and the chicken salad served at the Chintz Room. Lucky for us that Columbus restaurateur, Elizabeth Lessner, and Michael Hermick, owner of Zapico Foods, have recreated the Chintz Room with many of the original fixtures and bringing back several of the menu items with a modern twist. Join us for lunch and hear Elizabeth Lessner speak about the Columbus Food League and her journey in opening up this new restaurant. We look forward to seeing you this spring and hope you have enjoyed our fall programs! Carolyn Melvin, Program Co-chair & Myra Yavitch, Program Co-chair In September, an inquisitive group toured the Lustron home that was displayed inside the Ohio History Center. Everyone enjoyed strolling down memory lane with all the accessories displayed from a typical 1950’s home. Myra Yavitch, co-chair, posed outside the fabricated Lustron home. She once again helped plan a very interesting program that every enjoyed. The Hands On Group helped make their Thanksgiving dessert tables more delicious by serving the homemade apple pie they created. The evening event in November was spent learning how to make a pie from scratch at the Franklin Park Conservatory. Not sure any were Martha Stewart worthy, but all enjoyed the experience.
